MMD and Cyber-Bullying
So one morning I was going through my DA messages and there was one from deviant RaikuHoshigami with a rather interesting proposition. Basically, he suggested that I write an article on "Cyber-Bullying" as it pertains to MMD.
He raised some really interesting points with respect to this subject and in a nutshell these were all points that affect many of us here on DA who are MMDers, either directly or indirectly. Especially since outside of Japan, many MMDers are exactly in the demographic groups most likely to be affected by "Cyber-Bullying"; namely those who are in their pre-teen and teens. There are also instances to my direct knowledge where some who are in their early 20s have been negatively impacted in their experiences with MMD by others on DA. So, this is a subject worth visiting in a little more depth.
So what we will do here are the following:
(And I'm afraid we can only touch the subject in this article briefly as i

Recently there has been a controversy between YamiSweet and the administrators of Bowlroll.net. The gist of it is that Bowlroll had removed some of her files from their server due to "TOS violations". However, this discussion isn't about this controversy as it's well documented and as far as the two parties are concerned it seems to have been resolved amicably and I am not, in writing this article, attempting to re-ignite the discussion. If you want to read more, please visit these pages: http://fav.me/d5ucxlq and http://fav.me/d65bv6j
I have been an admirer of Ms.YamiSweet work for quite awhile and I am definitely impressed by her level of maturity. In addition, I really do feel she did all she could to handle the situation well. As unlike many DA MMDers, she has, to the best of my knowledge, always taken pains to do things correctly.
What is more worrisome, however, are some of the comments on these pages and this is what this article wi
MMD A discussion on Illegal EditsMMD A discussion on Illegal Edits3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
There are very few topics that elicit more "passionate" discussions within MMD than the controversy surrounding what are generally referred to as "Illegal Edits". Now, I've publically made the statement that I did not believe that there's such a thing as an "Illegal Edit", but then again that's just an opinion.
I could be totally wrong too.
Which is why, I felt it would be a useful exercise to look at this issue in a rational manner purely for the purposes of discussion. The views presented herein, are solely mine. Although, I will be touching on the subject from a "Legal" perspective, let me state clearly that I am not a lawyer, so what is presented here is my interpretation which may or may not be correct.
In order for this discussion to provide any useful information, I have divided the topic into several areas that I feel are relevant and need to be examined in some detail. These will be:

WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT
This all started when I saw a page created by RaikuHoshigami in which he presented the Terms of Usage which Japanese modeler Arlvit uses in the readme.txt that accompanies his model of Touhou character Sakuya Izayoi for MMD.
The original page and the discussion that lead to the writing of this journal can be viewed here:
To keep this brief, basically I found it an interesting exercise to see exactly how valid those terms really are from a purely legal sense, and by extension how valid other rules created by other MMD modelers and MMD model editors actually are. Note that I prefixed the last two groups with "MMD" and that is because this article will only discuss models made specifically for MMD (Miku Miku Dance). These restrictions and definitions are necessary for reasons that should be obvious as you read on.

I thought this subject was pretty much laid to rest, but apparently it still keeps raising its ugly head and, well let's put it this way, I hate to let sloppy reasoning slide and demolishing sloppy reasoning is fun.
So what's this all about? First off this is definitely GM34's fault. He wrote to me asking about a transgender UTAU that he was interested in using for an upcoming project and wanted to know "its" name. And I told him it was Namine Ritsu, and went to look for a link for him. Now whenever you do a search for Namine Ritsu, you're going to bring up Nanami Watabe's name. And since he has a DA account I clicked there and found that he faved a certain journal.
You might want to give that journal a quick read before proceeding here as basically this is a rebuttal as well as a partially constructive response to the arguments presented in that journal. And whilst I'm at it I'm going to demolish some other myths that the Japanese MMDC has about us s

DeviantArts (DA) is probably unique in several ways, but the thing that I've found strangest and have had the most difficulty with grappling with is their tolerance(?) of "rips". Which is why I think this could be an interesting discussion.
"Rips" are models taken from commercial computer and video games and used for "something else". Make no mistakes about it, probably 99.99% of rips are illegal in the sense that they were "stolen" from something else. Which, given the existence of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), makes it kind of strange that DA tolerates any rips on their servers at all. May be they really do deserve the kind of reputation that they receive on other forums on the Internet, or they just aren't making enough money to be worth the bother to sue. Who knows? The fact remains is that at the moment DA seems to be a safe haven for rippers and nowhere are they perhaps more visible than in the MMD field.
Then again, there's ano
MMD, the Law and YouMMD, the Law and You3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
I am writing this article to try and dispel some of the misconceptions about the Law as it applies to specifically MMD. Let me state categorically, that I am not a lawyer. In addition, please regard what I write here only as a basic guideline which points may or not be absolutely correct in the legal sense and are subject to correction by people with proper training in the areas which are discussed here. Specifically, do not treat this article as necessarily sound ‘Legal Advice’, rather it should be taken merely as a “Document for Discussion”. References to some of the points here written by real experts are noted in the links at the end of this article should you wish to pursue more knowledge.
Additionally, what is written here is based on legal practices, as I understand them, as applicable only under US Law; which may or may not have jurisdiction in the part of the world you come from. That said, deviantart.com is operated

One Christmas when I was a child, my relatives in Switzerland sent me a wooden puppet. It was a beautifully handcrafted mannequin to which strings were attached. There was this wooden cross like "controller" which you held in the hands and I've never managed to get the dang thing to work ...
That was a long time ago and in all honesty I don't even remember what happened to that puppet but I figure that if I still had it, it could probably be sold on EBay for a nice amount.
Then about this time last year, out of sheer boredom and a certain degree of curiosity I downloaded a copy of Miku Miku Dance (MMD). I loaded it up and probably like 99.99% of all users of that software, I then loaded one of the three Miku Hatsune models that comes with the package.
For some reason, she reminded me of that wooden puppet (correctly it's called a marionette) from my childhood days. There were obvious differences, not least of which was

Galaco just wants to inform you that we are setting up a new Model Review service for DA based MMD modelers and editors.
Basically, if you want a critique of your MMD model, just leave a note here and follow the "rules" outlined below. The purpose of this service is to give an indepth critique of a model or edit that you have made to help people become better at modeling or editing. Our objective is to give constructive criticisms, to highlight models and to help raise the overall standard of especially edits made publicily available to the MMDC by DA MMD enthusiasts.
[ 1 ] The model must be your own work. Please do not ask us to review someone else's work.
[ 2 ] The model must be completed and already on offer as a download on DA. (The d/l itself can be hosted off site).
[ 3 ] The model must be a legal edit. No illegal parts used (to the best of your knowledge).

So as it turned out someone wrote the following message to me:
nah, i gave up on it ages ago... its not only hard but also frustrating and depressing... approx. 1 month for 1 min motion duration = got burned-out before i'd even finish it... so i raise up my hands in the air and just retire... don't have any spare time to make it. still have life and work to do after all... ahahaha...
Now this is not the first time I've seen something like this written and so I felt it would be a nice idea to write down the method that I use to do my animation work.
First off, to save you alot of time, this is not a tutorial on computer animation. There are plenty of excellent tutorials around on this topic all over the Internet. Rather this article gives you a method; specifically mine; on how to approach the process of producing animation. So if you're looking for a "How to" guide, this is not it.

MMD Thoughts on the DO NOT EDIT controversyMMD Thoughts on the DO NOT EDIT controversy2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Someone (Ryukrieger) sent me a note about the ongoing controversy within the MMD community about the 'DO NOT EDIT' topic. The correspondent wanted to know what my views were and I thought about it and since it's been awhile since I've written an editorial article for MMD, I felt this was a subject matter worth discussing in more detail.
First off, I need to make it perfectly clear that I am usually a proponent of the 'DO NOT EDIT' rule. Most of my own work prohibits editing except for where special exceptions are made. My reasoning here is mainly because most of my work is original, are stages and in the final analysis, my thinking is that stages work like costume. Just find one that's suitable for your project and get on with it, don't be changing what I have put on offer. Still, I've seen bits and pieces of my stage components used in conjunction with other peoples' bits and pieces and in principle, I'm fine with this practice.
But the main

I probably deleted the above anger rant, so that I could get things out in a more civilized manner, since I have realized whenever someone just angry-types, they are usually ignored or deemed as immature.
And I don't want that to happen. The only reason my 'rants' get attention, is because they're not "rants". So here we go.
What I'm irritated about now, is all the bloody rants going on. (Oh hohoho, irony, because I'm writing one now lol).
So far, here are the subjects I have seen:
❈ Bad MMD pictures by beginners
❈ Overused models
❈ Faves and runs
❈ Under-appreciated models
❈ People breaking model rules
And quite frankly it's starting to irritate me.
So let us begin this long, analysis of the MMDC once more...

Alright, let's face it. The MMDC has some pretty hardcore "noobs" (Sorry, I was just taught that word today by a friend). I'm talking the ones who just downloaded MMD, who don't

Well in my opinion there are few things that makes a good looking animation
Smoothness - This is a big case for MMD users since the interpolations are not automated. This is not enough though since if you asked other animators who have experience with other 3d animation programs, it's not a big deal really.
Proper body movements - Important because the viewer will feel like the bones are really connected to each other
Real life physics - This is one of the things that makes the viewer find the animation interesting, applying real life physics to your animation is really important, heck the professionals even have the "bouncing ball" exercise
Everything does not move at the same time - If the bones move at the same time, it looks really stiff. Look at some very beginner animations and it doesn't really look nice at all, by having them move at different times, the eyes can perceive some sort of real life physics agai
SpeechlessSeriously. The sheer horrifying nature of the internet has left me speechless for now.Speechless2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I live in a free country, where freedom of speech is an important matter. A long while ago, when I was still young and at school, we learned how to do a proper discussion in class. We were learned that provocation isn't that bad to get a message across, but that you should always have at least some respect for the people you discuss with, and talk with them with calmness and reason. If you lose your temper, you lose the argument. That's what I've learned.
The reactions I got on my last journal, however, have left met both sad and speechless. Because I'm unable to grasp how people can be so downright insulting towards a fellow human being. To a member of the same website....
My journal wasn't meant to tell people how much I hate fanartist. Because... I don't really hate them. I just feel sad about how hard it is to get attention for original work in the sea of fanart ou

I saw a model of Haku on YouTube which I wanted to get a hold of so began to look for a link using GOOGLE without success so I went over to my favorite site for MMD model links to find that site gone. It had disappeared, replaced by a cover page that simply stated that the URL I was looking for does not exist. So I went over to the site author's DA gallery and found out from a journal that the site was removed due to a violation of the hosting company's policy.
The site in question is the highly popular citrus-smoothie blog which has been operated for several years by Xoriu. Apparently, the site was taken down because it had a nude screenshot of an under-age model and this sort of thing is against Tumblr's policies. Xoriu is at the moment trying to negotiate with Tumblr to have the blog reinstated and I wish her the best of luck in this endeavor because it will be a very sad day for the MMDC if this site remains permanently gone from the scene. BRS modeling stage done!Next texturing! XD Today to finish up the modeling stage of things I just ended up doing the double layer to the entire coat to add thickness throughout. I said I wouldn't do this but then I started to think about how spa's act on hard seams and changed my mind. I'll just make sure to make the coat geometry one sided to avoid issues.BRS modeling stage done!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I do however want to test spa's and seams by bringing multiple objects into pmx and making their vertex normals perfectly aligned along the seam. Then assign a spa to it in pmx and combining them inside the editor to see if it has any effect to make the seam go away. This would be hugely beneficial in tough situations with weighting.
Anyways besides the coat. I added detail to the 3d lashes in similar style to the anime. Also improved boot details to match as well. Added zippers under the cuff of the boot even though its not visible in the anime I feel why not do it on the model.
Lastly I stuck a tongue and teeth in her mouth. Which reminds me. What expres

I did get BRS into pmx despite my lack of tools. A new challange is how to get the hoods and stuff to fade in from zero opacity. It seems MMD's material sliders only go from opaque to transparent but not the other way. If anyone has any idea's let me know.
After I sort the shaders and the slider stuff I can try rigging her. I just dono how the laptop will handle it. But having her in pmx is a start.
