Sell yourself.. but not undersellFound this on tumblr..... and I find it incredibly relevant. Especially since I've been preaching that subject to a few others recently, myself. Though this illustrates it perfectly.Sell yourself.. but not undersell2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I also find it amusing and painfully true, at the mention of the 'DeviantArt mentality'.
If you are looking to make honest money with honest, art/writing work.. don't undersell yourself just because some kids that only get an allowance from their parents think its too much. (And don't get me wrong. I was that myself for a long while. Your perception of money's worth changes -allot- as you grow up though.. so don't tell someone something isnt worth it just because you see something like 100$ as allot.. it is to a younger person with no bills. To me though? that's not even 1/4th of my monthly car payment.. )
Most people trying to make decent money by putting more than decent effort into their work have grownup stuff to pay for.. And better ways to make money than wasting time for even less.
of course that me
On pricing your artwork and creating a career...I am going to be speaking at an "Entrepreneurship In The Arts" program later today, and I've been organizing my thoughts. One subject that is certain to come up; "how do you arrive at a fair price for your original artwork?" I have some definite ideas regarding that question. On pricing your artwork and creating a career...3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I was always told that the accepted model for artists and artisans, when it comes to pricing, was double your costs for materials, figure out an hourly price (double that for your retail price if you plan to have wholesale/retail differentials), add it up and there's your item price. I think this model is pure bullshit.
I was also told "charge what the market will bear!" Again, vague bullshit. What if you live in a depressed area? What if you live in a third world country? What if you're at some artist's ally at a little convention and there is a kid sitting next to you selling her character sketches for $5 each?
Here is what I think. There are so many variables when it comes to pricing original art. Yo

I opened a new folder for colorist artworks four months ago, which still appears to be confusing many members and is adding to my workload. A colorist is responsible for adding line art to pencil sketches and colour to black-and-white line art, which often involves from two to three individual artists. Please remember that this folder is not for colourful artworks or colouring your own artworks.

I believe that Minecraft is the future of massive multiplayer games, and I'm surprised that none of the big developers/publishers have cottoned onto it yet.
They look at Minecraft and think its success is down to its business model, or to its blocky, retro charm.
It's down to the fact that you get out of it what you put into it.
With a MMORPG, there are pre-scripted quests. With Minecraft, you set the quests yourself or others.
User created content is the key. All you have to do is provide the players with the tools to build.
There are two types of gamer: wall builders and wall breakers.
Wall builders are the ones that spend an age in an RTS game getting their base just right. They play SimCity and act as Dungeon Master during an RPG.
Wall breakers are the type to follow the mission brief. They get set a quest and they follow it. They're the Call of Duty crowd and they're never more happy than when

Watercolour Workshop 2013 - almost full!I've still got some spaces for the second workshop! The first is full!Watercolour Workshop 2013 - almost full!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
WHEN: Workshop 1: August 17th/18th; one weekend (Saturday and Sunday); eight hours on both days (10-18.00) Workshop 2: August 24th/25th. Both workshops are independent of each other. Should anyone wish to come to all four dates, that will be possible too.
WHERE: Youth Hostel Aachen, Germany. http://www.jugendherberge.de/en/hostels/search/portrait/jh.jsp?IDJH=434
WHAT: You'll learn the basics of how watercolour works, along with an assortment of colour theory, special tricks in watercolour, get the chance to try out different sorts of paint (I'll bring every variety I have and you're free to give them all a try) and things like masking fluid and other gimmicks, plus anything you'd specifically like addressed. The approach that I'm going to show you is very much lineart-based, so it's a good idea to bring some lineart with you (on watercolour paper).
HOW MUCH: 60 Euros per participant. The workshop fee covers only the

Only a handful of those, however, can I refer to as being "good". Or even "tolerable".
Having watched them for most of my life, going back to things like Mysterious Cities of Gold and the original Astro Boy, I can say with a certain degree of authority that: Japanese storytelling is a bit wank. Daring and dynamic visuals, sure. Crap narrative.
And it can't ALL be blamed on "bad translation".
There's a wide range of gripes to be had, but chief among them these days is that the major characters, those who one would assume you're to root for, across however many episodes the series consists of, are generally complete and utter dicks.
I'm currently wading through Gurren Lagann, a series which people have raved about for a while but which I'd not had the chance to watch until now (spoiler approaching, should you be in the same boat).
Contest Time! - Contest Folder ClosedThe contest folder is now closed, and you will no longer be able to submit. If you have an entry that was posted on August 1st or earlier, but for whatever reason were unable to get it into the contest folder in time, please send us a note with a link to your entry, and we will add it. We're now going to be choosing the ten finalists, and there are so many awesome entries I have a feeling we're going to have a tough time! I'm estimating it will take us about a week to choose, and we will then announce the finalists, and you guys get to vote for the winners
If you cannot submit your entry to the contest folder, please send us a note with a link to your entry. We will then request your piece for the gallery. The reason you can't submit is because we have the folder set up so you will only be able to submit once, in order make

Let's just go over what I posted yesterday: I voiced that I have no opinion on guns in America, because I don't live there and as such; don't care. I said that I, personally, am afraid of guns and think they're industrial killing machines. And I posed a vague, hypothetical question that could have been applied to any situation where an old law/doctrine is in effect.
That's it. Nothing more. Harshest word in there was "change" followed by a question mark. Not "ban", not "make guns illegal" and certainly not "outlaw free speech and trial by jury", which some people with a slightly looser grasp on reality seem to think go hand in hand with owning the firearms I said I don't care about.
Well, today, I am going to post an opinion: if you're the kind of insecure, paranoid little twit that flies off the handle when someone poses a simple question, and who holds weapons and the laws that permit them with such religious reverence that you perceive that question as not

Ripper StreetThe, surprisingly good, Ripper Street returned to begin its second series last night.Ripper Street2 years ago in Personal More Like This
When it first showed up last year, I believed it was shamelessly riding on the success of the Sherlock Holmes movies. Watch the opening credits and you'll understand why:
However, while those that made the opening are obviously Robert Downey Jr fans, the writers of the series are more interested in telling their own stories.
Ripper Street is a very, very good crime drama, and seems to have production values on par with the genre behemoths produced over in America.
It's set in late 19th century London and follows a trio of lawmen from Whitechapel's H Division: the well-to-do Detective Inspector Reid, his right-hand man Detective Sergeant Drake and a rogue Pinkerton agent, Captain Jackson.
Despite the title, this series is not about chasing Jack the Ripper. They did something far more interesting with the legend in using the panic that it created as a backdrop.
kitten rescue!!WE RESCUED A KITTEN TODAYYY!!#(@#!*kitten rescue!!4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Last night there was a huuuge wind and thunder storm here. Then early this morning, we heard crying/screaming coming from the top of our grapefruit tree! After searching, we found a kitten tangled at the top! T___T We got a ladder and rescued him and brought him inside. He had thorns and blood on him, but we took care of his wounds and fed him. He's okay now and sleeping peacefully. How did he get up there?!
Looks like we have another baby to take care of.
I swear, we will never have to actually purchase an animal...they just fall into our care so randomly. o_o;
This is the third cat/kitten that we've recently rescued. You may remember:
Chiba, the abandoned kitten we rescued.
Vincent, the wounded cat we rescued who was shot with a bb gun.
Both are healthy, spoiled and sassy grown cats now. ^___^
This new little baby is going to receive a lot of love. He's a fussy little thing...

I've been away because I've been sick. A good kind of sick, mind you. I have a bun in the oven and have been spending a lovely 3 months clutching the toilet bowl. Holy pizza balls! Pregnancy nausea is horrible! But let me tell ya, once I got over it I felt so awesome that the thought of climbing Mount Everest doesn't even phase me. Haha... so I'd like to think.
