Okay, so this isn't exactly a journal entry. But since I can't be bothered to figure out how to post inline images in the commentary section of regular image posts, you're getting this. Deal with it.
In my perpetual state of ultimate lazyness, this image has been bouncing around for a while, and I'm just now getting around to posting it. And I've had a fair number of questions. So, I think I'll take this opportunity to walk you through some of the happy accidents that fill the days of us artists. That's right, Bob Ross may be the only one who owns up to it, but we all have them.
To me, the most important thing in art is making decisions. In fact, you can break my art philosophy into a tidy little three step triad. Observations -> evaluations -> decisions. That's the important stuff. Everything else is just about

- I'm not telling you which princess I'm doing next.
- I would appreciate it if you didn't tell me what character I should do next, or what you're looking forward to, or what character you hope I'll do! It's very sweet and I definitely appreciate the sentiment, but consider the fact that you're something like the 400th person to tell me about Elsa, or Anna, or Merida- it's not adding a lot to the conversation.
- No, I'm not doing any Kingdom Hearts characters. There's no particular historical precedent, so they don't really have anything to gain from this series.
Are you going to do Merida?
YES PLEASE STOP ASKING sobsobsob
Are you going to do Elsa and Anna?
Are you going to do any more pieces in this series?
Yes! Let it be assumed that I will continue doing these until stated otherwise.

this is a contest for a character for the "Anima: Gate of Memories" video game.
I will be very clear, there will be NO PAYMENT for any winners here. You enter if you want to do this, and we are in no way trying to scam anyone of doing free work.
What the winner will get out of this contest:
1. the winner's character will be 3D modeled, and put into the game as a character inside the game and story. We will work to incorporate this character into the story, without him or her just standing around for nothing.
2. the winner's full name will be in the credits.
3. This character will be copyrighted primarily to this game, you are allowed to use the artwork for your portfolio, but may be a bit complicated if you want to sell him/her off to a new client. Details of copyright can be discussed with the winner.
What we are looking for:
1. human character in any age or body type, he/she should look like a fa

As a protest of #SOPA and #PIPA (The Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect IP Act) two pieces of legislation that are up for debate once again on January 18, 2012, I will not be online.
This applies to everyone! Share this message as much as you can and don't allow your freedoms to be stolen away.

You may find some of the advice written here ridiculous but this is how i began so i'm speaking from experience

If you are a complete beginner i would highly recommend using cheaper metals such as copper, aluminum, anodized aluminum or lacquered copper. You will ruin some to substantial quantity of wire while learning. Don't let that bring you down; it is normal and everyone who makes jewelry has gone through that phase So, unless you are wealthy, get the cheapest wire possible and experiment. Learn how it behaves. If you bend it 3 times will it break? What pressure is the best to hold it tightly without marring it with pliers? I learned on the cheapest wire available so i did not have to think THAT much about the money i was ruining with my failed attempts. You can get these in most craft or

What is it? A state of being that exists when needs or wants are not being fulfilled and the desire to have those needs or wants satisfied.
On a basic level, humans have needs. I hope we are familiar with Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs because that is what I'm about to draw from. If not, here's a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow%27s_hierarchy_of_needs . On the bottom rung, we have physiological needs that must be met for basic survival: breathing, food, water, sex, sleep, h

For those who read the story this week, what were your thoughts? This piece was given to me to read in one of my very first workshops at university, which is why I thought it was an appropriate choice. We don't need to delve deep into the context and themes of the piece, but in particular, I hope there was some attention paid to how characters reacted to the change, and beyond reaction but living and coping with that change- because guess what? This workshop is all about change and reaction.

Write a story from the point of view of the family pet.
There are two options:
1. The pet can be the main character (and the only pet in the household)
2. The pet observes their "owner" but the actions and decisions the owner makes affect the pet
Things to consider:
The pet itself.
What kind of pet? Was it a rescue or a result from a pet-olympian breeder system? Did it adopt the family? The mind of a mutt is different than the mind of a specific dog breed. And Siamese cats are much different from Ragdolls. What would their "personalities" be?
And no, we're not anthropormorphizing them, either. No pets may talk to their owners. Owners can obviously talk to the pets but there are no exchanges of dialogue between them. The use of italics for the pet's thoughts are acceptable if needed.
What about exotics?

ScreamPrompt #28, September 2012In the hopes of maybe spurring more than 14 of you to write a story for the group this month... I'm going to have to do something drastic. I'm expecting stories from each of you because there is no excuse for not doing the following: I feel like making you all get introspective and personal. We're familiar with the tired advice of "write what you know", so that's what we're gonna do this month. There is no way there should be any stragglers with this one. Think of a word/adjective you don't like being called. Tell a story about someone (NOT YOU) fitting this adjective. Something bad should happen to them that should teach them a lesson and they end up redeeming themselves in the end.
What word/adjective you don't like being called? For me, that would be "princess". In the past, the guys in the kitchen would call me that and I'd have no ide

Improving and The Magic NibFrom time to time I'll hear questions from other artists concerning artistic pathways.Improving and The Magic Nib2 years ago in Personal More Like This
It probably stems from seeing my work over the years. Early in my career I was given a tremendous opportunity to draw the first Prophet book for Image Comics. I had years of inking experience behind me but I had never drawn a full comic book prior to that experience. The first issue sold nearly a half million copies. My first foray into penciling/inking was quite a spectacle... Looking back, it's one of the most cringe-worthy books from the 90's. That was a little over 20 years ago. When I returned to the comic book field I was a different artist thankfully. Obviously 20 years is a long time for a growth curve.
Check out some of my Journals here on DA. I delve into getting into the business and what pushed me, etc. Mostly it's just focusing on weaknesses and addressing them. Fixing what's broke or doesn't perform as well as I feel it should. Whic
Devious Journal EntryThat doesn't look right. Something off about her eyebrows. No...maybe it's her forehead. Nope...it's her hairline. Gotta be. It's too low. Or too high maybe. CRAP! Something's off, but I cant figure out what. You know...it could be her jaw line. Too wide. Nope. Now it's too narrow and her face looks long. Put that back, but the chins definitely too big. Makes her look manish. Yeah, that's it..that's working! But...now her mouth looks a little weird. The lips are too big or something. Damn it, why did I try to make her smiling? I can never get that to look right. But she needs to be smiling..it works for the piece. You know what, fuck it I'm starting over.Devious Journal Entry4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Man, that's one of the best figures I've ever done! The pose is perfect and I really got some nice energy in it. Its always a great to nail a figure in the quick gesture drawing. Now, I just need to draw the face on there and we're gold. An hour later.....

The idea of an artist.I'm finding I have a very different idea of what an "artist" is than most people. I've taught a few young aspiring artists over the years and it seems like all of them have been come in preprogramed with the message of "don't be an artist, there's no money in art... do something valuable for a career that makes money". The training in arts is put down at a very low level and trivialized in most peoples minds. The problem is I think people are drawing way too small of a circle when they think about being an "artist" is, and what one can do with art. I think art education programs really do themselves no favors and ironically help perpetuate this message themselves. Most people think of fine artists, gallery artists, and those artist in the weekend art show in the park, when they think about artists. They look back at what art is in art history books and look to find the nearest equivalent of that today. The idea of an artist.1 year ago in Personal More Like This

First off, I think that what happened regarding this issue highlighted the BEST of our industry. I'm thrilled with the results, although I don't find Marvel's statement reassuring (more on that later). When we learned that Marvel was pursuing the $17,000 from Friedrich, we came together as concerned professionals and fans and managed to affect the situation. Even though we disagreed, at least we weighed out the options. And we even came together to set up funding to help out Friedrich. Someone is right for the first time in their life.
The main character should be between six and ten years old. Children's fiction. First-person POV.
Channel that inner child, folks. Dig deep. Summer's almost over. The real world is closing in. Give us some juicy conflict. Just because it's a children's story doesn't mean it has to be innocent but leave the predictable dark cliches at the door. No abuse of any sort, I don't want to read about a kid getting hit or diddled.
Word count: between 1500 and 2000
Due date: August 31, 2013
I've never written a children's story before. Honestly, I'd have no idea what to do or where to start. Should be interesting once I pick it up again.
Note finished stories to me here or at my personal page. Any and all questions will be answered as so

OBJECTIVE: SELL THIS DAMN BOOK, DANNY.
At first, Gabriel was nothing more than a character named ONE. He had no backstory, no face, nothing. I just wanted to create a character that was a badass, yet with a sense of humor.
I was inspired by such characters as Boba Fett, Wolverine, Deadpool and Clint Eastwood from The Man With No Name trilogy. I needed to create something that fit that build, however, I'll admit, it wasn't intended at first.
I uploaded him on December 8th, 2008, (which, you can find here: http://danluvisiart.deviantart.com/art/GABRIEL-107612010?q=gallery%3Adanluvisiart%2F7848546&qo=50) and he became one of the most popular characters of the series, if not, the most. Soon I started finding him on forums, websites, fashion blogs (what?), and more.
But what hit me so hard was that the majority of the comments rela
