DA's Commission System and Minimum WageDA has recently announced a new portal for users to search through those offering commissions to find artists they want to support.DA's Commission System and Minimum Wage2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
The commissions system will be handled using DA's internal currency system of points, of which DA takes a royalty from.
Commissions are allowed to start at 10 points each for any type of art produced, from rough sketches and small icons to full digital works. Commissions is a great way for artists to offer their services, but are we creating a low-wage market where over-abundance of supply and lack of unification undercuts everyone?
That is to say, how can we guarantee that artists get paid fairly for their work?
10 points is roughly 13 cents. 1000 points may seem like a large commission, but it's really only $10.
Right now DA takes a 20
Massive Star Wars Collab - 1 week left! There is now about one week left to contribute to the collaboration! (the 10th is the final day!)Massive Star Wars Collab - 1 week left!4 months ago in Personal More Like This
If you wanted to be part of it, now's your last chance.
For this collab, we will be drawing all the Star Wars characters we can!
:iconattention-plz: PLEASE READ ALL THE RULES BEFORE SIGNING UP! I don't want you to draw a character and not be allowed in because you missed a rule. ;_;
You don't have to be part of the group to join in the collaboration, but it's HIGHLY recommended at least for the duration of the collab because if I have any updates or new rules, I'm going to send the message here.
Any Star Wars character can only be in the collab once. In other words, if someone has already taken him/her/it, then you can't sign up them again.
When we're done, Zimeta will put together all the individual characters onto one big mural, much like her previous collabs:

SQUIRRELS: Borderline Dwellers
Squirrels occupy a perilous space at the borders of human society.
They are rodents, cousins of rats, yet we feel no revulsion as they hop toward us to ask for a cracker or crust of bread. They are cute enough to be pets, though we rarely domesticate them. They are the cutest animals that hunters regularly kill for food. They add that extra touch of life to a city park or a suburban backyard that completes a beautiful tab
The Price of ArtThis journal entry has been in my mind for awhile, and now with having posted the article about artists deserving respect as paid professionals I think its time to give you my perspective on this. The Price of Art6 years ago in Personal More Like This
What determines the price of art? What is art worth? Is it really worth anything? Why should people buy art?
First of all, the major point in all of this is that the price of art is completely subjective, meaning that its value is mainly determined by the person viewing it. The second part of the value of artwork is determined by the cost of materials, and the cost of the artists time, as well as how in demand their work is. Then there are different price scales for Fine Artists, Graphic Artists, Illustrators, Freelance Artists, Web Designers, etc. All of these factors add up to the price of artwork.
For my purposes, I will discuss Fine Art and Illustration, which is what I am most familiar with.
With fine art, the

This article is all about commenting, including a few commenting tips and thoughts on commenting by fellow deviants, as well as some resoures you might find helpful for commenting.
Keep in mind what kind of deviation it is you're commenting on, as there are different things to focus on in a visual artwork (e.g. colours, shading) than a literature piece (wording, grammar), for example. (DerangedSenpai)
You can use the "sandwich" technique for commenting: start with saying something positive, put negative comments in middle, and also end with something positive. (Sachi-pon)Be specific with your positive and negative statements. Don't just say "It's cute", but mention a reason why you think it's cute; w

New years resolution.I slept through new years.New years resolution.3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Still sick... But partying isn't exactly my thing. Neither is drinking.
My resolution this year is going to be: to balance myself
Spontaneously, I feel like writing. So here's a story.
In 2011, I was on the right track. On the way to being more centered--I was feeling good and I was accomplishing a lot (mentally and artistically). But then towards the end of the year, things got shitty... I put myself in a bad situation (the kind I didn't know exactly how to respond to)... and as a result things spiraled out of control.
In a nutshell: I lost my sense of self.
January 2012? All the mental [and spiritual] progress I had made up until that point seemingly vanished. I felt like I didn't know myself anymore--I felt as though I had betrayed my self-confidence. Depression inevitably drowned me. My health suffered. I went from 120lb to 109lbs--which made everything worse. Ill body, ill mind...
I disconnected from everything.
Eventually the episod
Adopts for Charity! - an eventTHE GIST:Adopts for Charity! - an event2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Myself and any other artists who want to help will be making adoptables, commissions, or any sort of art for money, which we will donate the proceeds from to one of two charities in this event. Anyone can get involved, so please consider helping out in one of the ways we have listed below.
HOW TO HELP:
1. Selling the work
This is where you do what you do best- make art. Do adoptables, commissions, whatever you would usually do, and sell it. I would ask that you donate, at minimum, 50% of the proceeds to the charity of your choosing. Feel free to stock up on designs and start planning before the event starts.
If you sell things for points, and you don't have a PayPal (both of the charities take PayPal) you can talk to me, I'll have you send the points to me, and I'll donate the 100% USD equivalent of the points to the charity you wanted it to go to.
2. Buying the work
Obviously, this won't work if we don't have buyers. I encour
HATE in the Fandom...:icontransparentplz:HATE in the Fandom...4 years ago in Personal More Like This
This shall be a more, let's say, delicate subject, because it treats the hate that is spread in this fandom. But as far as I'm concerned I think this might happen to any fandom. Before going further into the problem, let's make a thing clear, I'm not an idealist, I'm not a dreamer about an utopia-like fandom in which everybody is singing Kumbaya, my lord, shakes hands and hugs, even if that would be kick ass, but I prefer the more challenging version in which different people, with different backgrounds, are able to express themselves as they wish and not be judge about it.
There is a thin line between expressing yourself, your opinion with respect for others to see and understand and becoming a jackass that can hurt or bully people. And this is what is all about, when people get hurts because of the hate of others we all have a choice: to stand for those who are hurt and get bullied or to ignore. I choose not to ignore it, why? Because I seriousl

Do not think i don't care, because that's not true. I read everything, some comments and notes even make me cry from happiness when i read them. Because I receive the sweetest words ever, and i"m sure of that.
It's for that exact reason that I want to apology for not replying.
I'm trying to work on that, but i'm just really scared of people online. I never know how to reply because i don't want anyone to get mad at me. Sometimes i cant even sleep because i'm thinking about how to reply to something. Yes, i'm that stupid.
And it's been even worse lately because i'm not that good so i think you can figu

If you don't accept criticism, you won't improveThis statement is, to be blunt, incredibly stupid. I see it repeated around DevianART and, as bad as it is hearing it from the general public, I have to laugh uproarously when I see it coming from an artist. I usually try to be more diplomatic, but sometimes my inner Snape just can't be contained. If you don't accept criticism, you won't improve3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Here is the reality of the situation. A person who is building a set of skills can improve without feedback of any kind. Through trial and error, a human being can identify their own mistakes and, with honest work, rectify those mistakes. To say that this is not possible is so counter to reality as to be absurd. I could give thousands of examples but I'll just say this: if it were not for an individual's ability to invent skills from within themselves we would have absolutely no skills to pass on to other people.
Is this a good reason to reject any kind of negative criticism or criticism in general? Does this mean that criticism is useless? Absolutely not. This

Well, there are a number of sites out there that I've come across over the years that help with that sort of thing. They pull stock images and such from different sources and give you a randomizer and timer and other features, or show anatomical structures that you can manipulate. Below I'll list some of the ones I've come across that might help you. Some of them have the same images, so you can probably just pick a couple favorites.
An oldie but goodie. I've used this site for ages and it's only gotten better. On it you'll find 3D models of poses that you can rotate around, and they all show the musculature. You can browse the poses, or use the random viewer, or the timed v

On misunderstandings about cosplayThis is a topic I've been meaning to talk about for quite a while now. I finally got the motivation to when Sarah sorairo-days emailed me to share my thoughts on what cosplay means to me, and what I feel it really means to be a cosplayer despite all the misconceptions about the hobby. It's for this article on Random Nerds, in which Sarah shares her side of it as well.On misunderstandings about cosplay3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Over the years, I've witnessed how cosplayers are constantly looked down upon, which makes people apprehensive towards it. It's such a shame because it's a wonderful and rewarding hobby which brings people together. And in general, I am firmly against making anyone feel bad about doing something they want to do.
I am aware that the concept of cosplay might be too much for some individuals, but our intention definitely isn't to get all up in everyone's faces and say everyone should cosplay or whatever. We just want to promote a

Not a troll was stirring, nor Grinch in his sleigh.
Deviations were hung in digital Galleries with care,
In hopes that +Favourites soon would be there.
The n00bs were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Daily Deviations danced in their heads.
And Fella in his 'kerchief, and spyed with his night-light,
Had just settled down to log-off for the night,
When over in the Forums there arose such a clatter,
Fella sprang back online to see what was the matter.
To the browser window he flew like a flash,
Tore open the tabs and refreshed the cache.
When what to his art-loving eyes should appear,
But an animated sleigh and eight commissioned reindeer,
With a little old driver, so creative and slick,
Fella knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than broadband, his reindeer were famed,

Gimp is a free photo editing software that you can download at gimp.org. You can use it for a lot of different things like photo manipulations, drawing, pixel art, etc. Today though, we will be covering the topic of animation!
Note that this tutorial will only show the basics of Gimp animation. How to make the frames, how to save it and the such. So let's get started!
Start by making the subject. I just used a random black ball, but the subject can be as simple or as complex as you want, depending on what you're making. Make sure you switch over to the layers tab.
Tip: If you do not already have the layers tab there by default, go to any of the tabs and press that little arrow that the green arrow is pointing at. After you click tab press: Add tab> Layers. After that, the layer tab like in the picture should show up.

Most denizens of the West think of New Zealand as a little known outpost of civilization somewhere beyond Australia at the ends of the Earth.
Could any land be any farther from the European motherland, birthplace of the Renaissance that is the Genesis-point of the visual arts narrative we continue expanding and evolving today? And yet this remote country of islands in the Pacific has suddenly become a cinematic storytelling powerhouse, a film-friendly factory for the creation of some of the most important touchstone mass entertainment experiences to influence our popular culture in recent years.
