'They had the loot, but were yet to secure their escape...'

I really wanted to capture a sense of motion and wild action in this picture; the sweeping curves of the track, twisting of the cloak, topplling of the timber supports and detail of the right hand side of the vignette, help create that mood. The eye is led through the composition by the points of light, whilst the resolution of the action is framed between the beams.

... the Seven have gathered.

The sons of Fëanor riding to Doriath to claim their own... and reap a reward of blood. From The Silmarillion by J. R. R. Tolkien.

Watercolour and gouache on Canson Montval paper, 65x32 cm.

I had the idea for this painting last September, and a digital sketch of it has been sitting on my harddrive since then. I've been too afraid to do more with it, but now, over Carnival, I've finally found the time and inspiration to finish it. Total time: Probably 25+ hours. Spread out over four days.

Note #1: Yes, the rider in front is missing a hand.
Note #2: From left to right: Curufin, Caranthir, Maglor, Maedhros (yes, he's centre stage - sue me!), Amras, Celegorm, Amrod.
Note #2a: Yes, there's seven - I go back and forth with whether Amrod is still around or not. ("The Seven gathered again from wandering" just requires it!)

A faerie dragon on a old edition approach. I tried to make this fellow fey-like ande very nimble. Also a retractible tail that he uses to feed :D

This is a commission for Mr Patrick Monkey Curtin!

I hope you like it!

From J. R. R. Tolkien's Silmarillion, though not a direct scene.

Schmincke watercolours on Canson Montval paper, 29x40 cm.

After casting his Silmaril into the sea, Maglor is left to linger on the Hither Shore - never again coming among his people, caught in a world of his own where music no longer brings consolation, surrounded by the ruins of the former greatness of the Noldor, whose downfall he had a part in.... quite possibly his brother's fortress of Himring, which alone was not swallowed by the sea. :(

Pretty much a re-do of this one. [link]
