Get an Art Education Without Expensive Art SchoolsAs much as I love my school, Academy of Art University, it's not necessary to attend a special art school in order to learn about art. Because of the internet, there are plenty of resources available for those who are self-motivated and eager to learn.Get an Art Education Without Expensive Art Schools2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'll start with some of the cheapest resources, ending with more expensive ones:
1. Blogs, podcasts and livestreams. Most professional artists keep blogs, and these things are free treasure troves of information. The best blogs don't only show off art, they also give tips about the business of art and introduce you to new resources. Try starting with Muddy Colors, a super informative blog run by several professional painters and sculptors: http://muddycolors.blogspot.com/ For podcasts, check out Chris Oatley's artcast: http://chrisoatley.com/category/podcasts/ Also check out the Awesome Horse Studios livestream: http://www.awesomehorsestudios.com/
2. Online tutorials and videos. I basically taught myself digital painting by combini

To all the depressed teens on DeviantartHi. I went through depression in my senior year of high school. I felt lonely, guilty, ugly, unworthy of love, painfully isolated. Being alone at night was the worst, because that's when all the dark thoughts would come and I would fight the thoughts of cutting myself. I wrote a lot of bad poetry. I cried all the time and didn't even know why. I thought about what heaven might be like, and I wished I was there. To all the depressed teens on Deviantart3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I told my parents. I got therapy. I got medicine. I got better.
Since then, I've gone to college. I studied abroad in Japan. I fell in love and married a cute guy. He and I are making a video game together! Now I'm going to graduate school and I'm learning to become a children's book illustrator. I live in a bright apartment where I can see squirrels climbing in the trees outside my window. I love baking muffins and popovers and other yummy things. Not every day is rainbows and sunshine, but in general I am a very happy girl and I LOVE my life.
As a teenager, I never could have
DA's Insular Taste PhenomenonIt's been quite a while since I wrote a preachy "THINK ABOUT YO' ART"-type journal, and some of my newer watchers may not know that this is a particular(ly annoying) habit of mine. This is a subject I've had on my mind for quite some time for a number of reasons, and it's recently coalesced into a semi-soluble form so here we go. (As an aside- this journal does have some recycled ideas from a previous post of mine, but obviously I hadn't really said everything I wanted to on the subject.)DA's Insular Taste Phenomenon4 years ago in Personal More Like This
It's no mystery that I love this website. I came in at the tail end of the pre-critique wonder years, when the internet discovered and exploited that, yes, we don't always produce the highest quality art here. There's a lot of unpleasantness directed towards DeviantArt. At RISD, I made a point to never mention that I had an account here, because of the looks of disgust I would get haha and people would think about me differently. It was
Contest time! It's nearing 2015, and while I was going to wait until then to announce this, I actually can't really wait any longer. ((then again, I'm pretty much doing the same thing with all of my other plans I was gonna do in 2015. lol))Contest time!9 months ago in Personal More Like This
Anyways, time for a contest!
The theme of this one is...
...Homestuck fan characters!
So basically the same as last year.
Unlike last year's contest though, I am having this one centered around a specific set of FC's rather than all of my sets.
The set I am centering this around is
The Constellation set!
-new sprites are here-
And the Humanstuck AU is now included!
This is basically what you get to choose from.
If there is an FC you

Disney vs Lucas ArtsIf ever you bring up Disney in a conversation, people immediately recite tired old issues with the company that haven't been true for a long time. For example, complaining about the excess of half-assed sequels. That was part of Michael Eisner's regime. When he left the studio the quality Disney was producing suddenly skyrocketed considerably. Likewise the excessive merchandising and branding of Disney related products has also ceased to be as all-consuming now that Eisner is gone. In fact, a lot of the main issues people had with Disney during the 90's and early 2000's was a result of Eisner.Disney vs Lucas Arts2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Since Eisner left, the Disney studio has done a REMARKABLE job in clearing their name of many of the atrocities they had committed during his regime. They promptly turned the animation department around and have even begun doing 2-D animated films again after Eisner said "no." Granted, at the moment 2-D is still in hiatus, but the situation isn't as dire as it use to be and there's still promise

On pricing your artwork and creating a career...I am going to be speaking at an "Entrepreneurship In The Arts" program later today, and I've been organizing my thoughts. One subject that is certain to come up; "how do you arrive at a fair price for your original artwork?" I have some definite ideas regarding that question. On pricing your artwork and creating a career...2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I was always told that the accepted model for artists and artisans, when it comes to pricing, was double your costs for materials, figure out an hourly price (double that for your retail price if you plan to have wholesale/retail differentials), add it up and there's your item price. I think this model is pure bullshit.
I was also told "charge what the market will bear!" Again, vague bullshit. What if you live in a depressed area? What if you live in a third world country? What if you're at some artist's ally at a little convention and there is a kid sitting next to you selling her character sketches for $5 each?
Here is what I think. There are so many variables when it comes to pricing original art. Yo

The Darkstalkers! Morrigan, Demitri, Felicia, Donovan, Victor, Talbain, and more battle it out for control of the night! Darkstalkers: The Ultimate Edition collects all of UDON’s original comics adapting and inspired by the fan-favourite Darkstalkers video game series in one massive, oversized-volume!
In the world on Darkstalkers, the fate of the world has taken a bleak and ominous turn. Slowly and steadily inhuman and supernatural characters have awoken and are roaming the earth. Vampires, zombies, ghosts, and succubae torment the mortal world—when not engaging in vicious struggles for power amongst themselves! Created by CAPCOM, Darkstalkers is dark reflection of the Street Fighter video games, a surreal and supernatural fighting game with fan-favourite characters that have gone on to star in other CAPCOM games, including the smash-hit Marvel vs. Capcom 3!
Darkstalkers was adapted comics by UDON from 2005 to 2009, and these stor
Quick NoteI was recently asked about how to go about studying anatomy. Keep in mind that anatomy is likeQuick Note2 years ago in Personal More Like This
icing on a cake. The underlying shape and form must be defined before you can start throwing
it in there. lol I'll be going over this base anatomy in the cliff notes. That being said, the best way
to study anatomy ( I think ) is to study function. If you understand interlocking forms, guess what?
You know how to draw, arms, legs and the torso. If you understand stacking forms you now have the tools
to draw intricate areas like the armpit, hips, arms reaching side view etc.
There's a few things I think about when I incorporate anatomy.
1.) Will it help flow?
2.) Will it reinforce my underlying form?
3.) Do I even need to show it in this image?
4.) What is the figure doing?
5.) Where is the weight?
the list goes on.
The simplest way to think of anatomy is this. If you take two pencils and position them in

Exercise 17: Cast ShadowsTHIS WEEK's EXERCISE POST : THE FULL POST AND DETAILSExercise 17: Cast Shadows2 years ago in Personal More Like This
So what is a cast shadow? A cast shadow is caused from an obstruction that interferes with the direction of the light source, and that obstruction CASTS a SHADOW. The challenge is figuring out how to add values to the form of the subject matter in both lit areas and areas that fall under the cast shadow.
EXERCISE: Create 3 examples of cast shadows on different subject matters.
For this exercise, there are three examples you are to test your skill set on. You can download the practice sheet on the main page but below is an example setup.
1. The first is an animated character with 2 obstructions. You know the scene set up: When a garage door is lowering or a door is slowly being close

Correcty me if im wrong, people are going to send designs and designs that took months or years in preparations from schools, wasting money in materials, electricity, tablets, tears and blood, and in the end they wont receive anything just a palm in your shoulder saying good job.
Can you pay your bills with your tiny name at the end on credits? Forget about the publicity crappy excuse. People will get paid for this but the winner and contestants they wont.

WISDOM NUMBER THREE!!! Work smart and leave your comfort zone. This part is my qualifier for art school, tutorials, and educational resources in general, because they can be good, but only if you make them good. Once you've gotten in to the habit of drawing consistently, it's important to start being mindful of what you're drawing, how you're drawing it, and why you're drawing it. A key ingredient of success is hard work, but if that work isn't purposeful it might not move you
