Character Design: An introductionCharacter Design: An introduction3 years ago in Art Features More Like This

What does 'Character Design' mean?
The character design is the process which comes after the characterisation and consists in defining the character through his/her physical appearance.
We need to consider a character as a little fictional creature, human or not, that aims to please its creator and the public as well.
While the basic characterization of this fictional creature (his tastes, his fears, his behaviors) may take a little mental effort, as it is a sort of list of emotions, facts and feelings that come and go in the life of a character, the process of visual realization of this creature may not be as simple. That's why many writers and characters creators prefer to rely on experienced hands.
Also many of the mental aspects of the character are not possible to gain by using 'static' visual medium. For 'static' I mean all the illustrations and drawings unable to tell a

Advice for Aspiring Artists Pt. 3And now for the dramatic conclusion to the epic trilogy. Heroes will rise, bad habits will fall, in this last chapter we'll discuss how to focus your efforts and learn the most and improve quickly with your studies. WISDOM NUMBER THREE!!! Work smart and leave your comfort zone. This part is my qualifier for art school, tutorials, and educational resources in general, because they can be good, but only if you make them good. Once you've gotten in to the habit of drawing consistently, it's important to start being mindful of what you're drawing, how you're drawing it, and why you're drawing it. A key ingredient of success is hard work, but if that work isn't purposeful it might not move you
Advice for Aspiring Artists Pt. 2Here's the continuation of yesterday's journal discussing the importance of hard work. If you missed it, click here!Advice for Aspiring Artists Pt. 22 years ago in Personal More Like This
In part two I'm gonna talk about one of the biggest roadblocks I hear from artists who are having difficulty getting in to good study habits, so without further ado...
WISDOM NUMBER TWO!! Don't wait for perfect weather and stop making excuses. So often I hear things like "I don't want to waste paper" or "I don't know what to draw" or "I haven't found a good tutorial" or "I don't want to study perspective" or any number of things along those lines. I'll be blunt and just put the answer out there now: get over it. If you want to be an artist, you have to do the work, end of story. And with all the time you've spent thinking, wondering, being uncertain, and searching for that magical art secret of power, you could have filled 10 pages in your sketchbook today and inc

Advice for Aspiring Artists Pt. 1So this has been on my mind a bit lately and I was just struck with the sudden urge to write about it. It's a bit long so I've broken it in to three parts, but if you're a beginning artist I would recommend reading through it, it might just get you aimed in the right direction.Advice for Aspiring Artists Pt. 12 years ago in Personal More Like This
This started a couple days ago when I was trolling facebook and someone had posted some artwork, and one of the comments was something along the lines of "Nice! What tutorial did you use for this?" which prompted an immediate and violent facedesk on my part. I hear things like this all the time and would like to help dispel some myths about learning art; so after 9 years of drawing and 3 years of hardcore education and study, here's what I've learned about how to get better at art:
WISDOM NUMBER ONE! Getting better demands consistent, hard work. That's it. That's the magical secret that great artists never seem to get to in their tutorials; it's that one pivotal thing that makes the difference between
The Danger of UrgencyJournal time!! I apologize for the length of this post, but I think it's important for artists, especially newer artists, to consider. Hopefully it will be of some use to you in your artistic journey. The Danger of Urgency4 months ago in Personal More Like This
SO... ConceptArt has been sending out emails to promo their study programs with little snippets of advice, some of them are good but one of them that came the other day really irks me. The first thing on their list is, "Study with a sense of urgency"
Now... this is my opinion, but I've heard similar sentiments from many other artists and creators who I would consider, "successful" in their field. And, in my opinion, "Study with a sense of urgency" is the absolute worst advice anyone could give to a beginner.
Yes, you need to work hard. The arts are a competitive field, and you need to push yourself if you want to climb the ladder. BUT in all of your hard work beware of mind sets like:
-"If I don't get good fast my dream job will disappear."
-"When this artist was my age they were still

So you want to do commissions? Part II - DefendGreetings! So you want to do commissions? Part II - Defend7 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Welcome to Part II of this little informative series on commissions. The last one was nicely received, and some had some good points that they wished would be brought up. Some of those questions and points will be mentioned in this specific article (or hopefully so).
To recap, last time I covered some very general points on how to get started in taking commissions. Building on that, this article covers how an artist should protect him or herself from those who would take advantage of your good nature or your inexperience, and sometimes both. And sometimes some folks are straight up thieves in disguise. By the end of this article, you should be in a position that will protect yourself from those who are unscrupulous, while at the same time saving you from appearing standoffish or worse, a sneak.
What do I mean by being a sneak? Well, imagine a car salesman, all smiles and such, offering

Hey everyone! Thanks for taking the time to check out my prices. I've tried to condense everything so that it's as easy to understand as possible.
Though, to make it easier on the both of us, go ahead and figure these things out before you message me.
What character/etc would you like drawn?
Are you going to be paying with dA points or through PayPal?
What kind of commission would you like? Full body/Chibi/Headshot/Adoptable/Etc?
Make sure to cover the PayPal fees if they are present. Do not cause me to lose any amount of payment I have earned, regardless of how small.
Assuming you know what you'd like, here is a bit of information on questionable things that I will draw, in case you have questions.
YES I will draw:

kickstarter?Hello all! I've seen more and more kickstarter projects come by lately, it seems like this method of funding is an increasingly popular thing. I really LOVE this concept, because of the opportunities it gives people who can't find funding elsewhere and the way people can participate in the creation of different kinds of projects. As someone who basically has her entire art career online and thinks sharing the things I do is absolutely crucial to my progress, I see the growth of kickstarter projects as a really positive development!kickstarter?3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I was thinking that this could be an option for the funding of the Trichrome series (if you have no clue what I'm talking about, check out http://trichrome.loish.net/ ) which I am going to start making in September (I already have research/outlines/scripts for the movies). I am very excited to make these but the problem has always been that I had to put the Trichrome work aside for freelance work quite often, since you know, I need to pay the rent and all! I

Figured sharing some Batman action might help break the ice a little.
In case you haven't paid any attention to the shorts that played this
summer over Cartoon Network's DC Nation then you might have missed the
standout work that came from Wolf Smoke Studio.
They're the studio behind Kung Fu Cooking Girls, a short that pretty much brought a new style to the animation table:
This, I believe, is the lead key animator's profile on Pixiv. Just click the image to go there and browse his gallery. It's quality:
Always a beautiful thing to see a new studio doing so well against all odds. They're almost doing the impossible over there in China. Hopefully we'll see them producing more memorable animation. I wish them many years of success and growth.
As far as myself, I've got some animation of my own coming down the pipe. More on that in the future...I'm
