fear and struggles"if you're making mistakes, it means you're out there doing something" -Neil Gaimanfear and struggles2 years ago in Personal More Like This
getting inactive again lately because besides work and my current addiction of playing , I've been spending my free time with alot of traditional sketches and scribbles! and when I don't draw anything I do ponder..ALOT. forgive me if this seems long and disjointed.
I pretty much read nicholaskole's journal about art fear a while back and I realized I've gotten too used to the digital medium, which my self-confidence and skill in drawing using pencil reach down to zero. Digital has become my comfort zone, anything I produced was not in par as my digital works so I just stopped trying at all. I definitely don't think there's anything wrong with keeping something you're used to, but at times when I feel like I don't feel as challenged as before it comes to the point where suddenly it demotivates me to draw.
Always put off trying again, my papers and paint were gathering dust and ants.. thinki
Women as Sex ObjectsWarning: Imma 'bout to rant.Women as Sex Objects2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
First off I'd like to point out that I'm not a raving feminist. I acknowledge that women are not equal in western society (despite corporate efforts that seem to be more about statements and false enthusiasm on the subject rather than actually taking women seriously) and I don't think we will be equal for a long time, if ever. Just how it is. Unfortunate (from the perspective of a woman), but just how it is.
ANYWAY. Here's my rant. I'm really tired of a female character being undermined by her being half nude. Really, really tired of it. And I'm not talking about artistic nudity, I'm talking about ass-cheek flashing skirts, bikini tops and little else (I'm looking at you, Japan).
I love a strong female lead, but they're so rare. Writers find it so hard to create a complex female character; they're either so brave and outspoken that they become butch and unattractive by design, or they're a sex object. A hopeless damsel in distress or someone who can hold th
TutorialIf I were to make a quick tutorial for youtube what would you like to see me paint (and explain) the most? I have lots of painting videos up (and also those LoL art spotlights) but a lot of people have asked if I could make some videos of my self painting a lot slower and with added commentary... so.. let me know what I should focus on.Tutorial3 years ago in Personal More Like This
My immediate thought would be to just paint a portrait of a character with some cloth and metal accessories so I can cover rendering different textures (hair, skin, metal, cloth) and some basic lighting stuff as well.

I just dumped a few links to resources regarding digital painting/anatomy/perspective/etc to someone and I felt like it should be shared with everyone.
Some of you (who know the way around the internet well) know most of these and if you have more to contribute, DO IT. 8)
The following will be a feature of sorts, I guess, for resources helping with a large variety of problems we all face(d) some time or other while drawing.
I still haven't even read/looked at most of these, I just.. bookmarked.. them.. :iconcryforeverplz:
Mass Miscellaneous Linkdumps that I don't feel like replicating in this journal HEH THESE ARE THE BIG ONES Everything I'm going to link to here probably will be found here, so look at them!

The ability to see if a deviant is watching you is a feature that has been requested frequently in the past by deviants, and it was rated highly on the new Suggestion Forum. We are happy to implement this feature and we hope it'll give more conte

Assignment: Week 16-18Monday, March 19th - Sunday April 1stAssignment: Week 16-183 years ago in Personal More Like This
Assignment: Color Palletes
Using photos/life for reference, practice working with different color palletes. Research the different way colors can affect a drawing; how does a picture with an earthy color scheme feel different from a picture with a neon color scheme? Experiment with limited color palletes, monochromes and colors you do not normally use.
Electorate: Complete the Color Scheme Challenge meme, shown below! (Or alternatively if you've completed that already, draw a full picture using only 3-5 pre-picked colors, without using any black or white.)
Deadline: April 1st

I'm ^alicexz now! + DD GuidelinesHi everyone! As of today I've been made one of the new Community Volunteers by Moonbeam13 and I'll be looking after the Digital Art gallery, along with MalKnox! Woo! Very exciting and I am definitely going to have a great time this year. My job will be to do some general moderating around the community; organizing deviations and miscategorizations, posting news and features and offering general support! Hopefully I can even get some contests going in the future! I'll be painting and posting art and carrying on in all my usual deviant things, so that won't change - I'll just be busier!I'm ^alicexz now! + DD Guidelines3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Oh, and of course I can also now feature Daily Deviations, so suggest away! I've typed up some rules which I'll be putting in my profile shortly, but here's a copy for this journal, please read it though!

Art in Contemplation of Its Own BecomingDuchamp finds a discarded urinal. He alters it (by signing a name to it not even his own, but obviously “the artist’s”) and names it “The Fountain”. The most mundane, even off-putting, of objects is transformed by Duchamp into art. He submits it for exhibition and it is rejected. You might say the judges “pissed on” his idea. But the idea was born and persisted. Duchamp insisted the object was art because he as an artist presented it as such. “Conceptual Art” was born.Art in Contemplation of Its Own Becoming3 years ago in Personal More Like This

Top 5 Mistakes (I've made over the years)To many people in comics, I only arrived a few years ago with Joe the Barbarian. Then came Hellblazer (completed in 2008 before I began working on Joe), American Vampire: SOTF, and finally Punk Rock Jesus. Once in a while someone will mention Off Road (an OGN I did with Oni back in 2004), but for the most part it seems like I've been published only these last few years when in fact I've been published professionally for a decade now.Top 5 Mistakes (I've made over the years)2 years ago in Personal More Like This
This isn't a plea to have everyone go back through my previous work--in fact, I'm glad that a lot of the books I've done over the years aren't on readers' radars. I'm proud of it all, but the books above are a nice, tight group of titles to be associated with. They're all in a similar brand, they're all recent, they all have good creators/publishers associated with them, and the artwork is mostly consistent. Go back further than that, and you'll see artwork that looks nothing like the stuff I'm doing these days. (Although Off Road still holds up to some de

i went to my Independent Research: Drawing class, which i signed up for late. so i didn't know quite what to expect, having not been to class yet. the only thing my professor told me to bring to class was a drawing i'd worked on or completed lately...
do you realize how vague that is? my mind went into overdrive. should i bring a large one that was more conceptual? should i grab a still-life? a comic? i was losing it. but then my dad, who is good friend with my professor, having been a grad student under his teaching, tells me to show my professor what i LIKE to do.
thus, i take the Hunger Games drawing i've been coloring, and a completed Blaire design.
i was so embarrassed when i showed him my cartoons, that i started rambling about how i'd like to go into animation, and he stops me. he asks me what materials i need to do that. i kinda freeze, cause i wasn't anticipating that at all. but then i spit out that i hadn't thought about anything spec

For years, we've been getting requests from the community asking for the ability to change usernames. We realize that as an artist, it's important to give you the ability to change your personal brand, just as you change your interests, skills, and art types.
How It Works
Deviants can now change their username in their Settings. To change your username, you must have an active Premium Membership. (The reason there is a "fee" associated with the change is because switching usernames is a complex technical proce

Just a little while ago, we posted the latest Sta.sh updates and asked you for more feedback. Now, in this update, you'll find all the feedback from those 500+ comments gathered into the Known Issues section below, just after the Change Log, which will tell you about some brand new features launching today, as well as all the bugs fixed since the last update.
The last update was all about Sta.sh, and there are some pretty big Sta.sh announcements this time too, but this update features any changes that have been made to deviantART, Profiles, Messages, Sta.sh, everything!
Many have asked for the ability to share a whole stack of Sta.sh files, as well as just one at a time. Well now you can! In any stack on your Sta

Are we allowed to submit art from assignments even when that assignment has changed, or is there a time limit for submissions?
There isn't a strict time limit, but I think as long as it's not too long after, say up to a week after the assignment is finished, it will just keep the gallery more coherent that way.
With the Electorate, can we incorporate it into our assignment so we do both with one picture or does it have to be two separate pictures?
Yes as long as it's relevant to the assignment.
Can we use any medium of our choice ?
The assignments are drawing oriented without much consideration to painting etc, but you can try to do the assignment in your preferred medium if you think it will help you.
Will each entry from each person get a critique?
Submitting something to the workshop shows you want critique for it. Other members should offer their critique there, but there

looking back to about a year ago i had doodled a very rough sketch in my sketch book of a girl walking an octopus. and when i say rough i mean rough. the sketch itself was nothing more than a study of contrasting silhouettes. i was drawn to the play between a very rigid character and a squiggly one.
i had forgotten about that sketch until i heard about a steampunk t-shirt design for www.welovefine.com. i thought that this design might have a chance so i went ahead and finished it off. well it got alot of attention and i am happy to say that it won the competition. the shirt started to sell
