Fandoms, Criticism Vlog, and Journals On Fandoms
Like most people, I'm a fan of a lot of things. However I don't often wade deep into fandoms themselves. For example, I like MLP:FiM, but I wouldn't call myself a hardcore Brony by any stretch of the imagination, as is evident by my continued botches of cutie mark colors (something no hardcore fan would EVER screw up).
Part of the reason I don't delve too far into fandoms is because fans can get very... emotional... about their given fandom. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it can sometimes be a crutch. I like a variety of series, but I'm not gonna throw a tantrum because of an episode name, or an animation mistake, like some people do. I don't like how angry or defensive fandoms can get sometimes, and for the most part I think people need to just calm down and relax and not be so standoffish.
Fans are, for the most part, good people who are just enthusiastic about a show or series. Just try to keep that enthusiasm from dipping into the negative side of thing
Objectification of MenAfter reading through the comments on my last journal about Tropes Vs Women in Gaming Part 2 I noticed a lot of people are angry we're even talking about sexism because (as they put it) "men are ALSO sexualized and objectified in gaming so women shouldn't complain that they are too."Objectification of Men2 years ago in Personal More Like This
And while that's a nice thought that sounds logical at first... any causal observer to gaming and most media today will be able to recognize that the two sides are not equal enough to make that sort of comparison. Here's the difference as I see it: Men are objectified and sexualized, yes, but it's not done for women. It's done for men. The objectification of men in gaming and other media is a self image fantasy FOR men. In other words, both the objectification of men and women are done for the benefit of men.
Not only that but again a casual observer will note that the standards of "beauty" are not at all equal on both sides. Female heros are all designed to be attractive, sexy, thin, sensual, pure,
History Repeats ItselfLast week a Connecticut action group going by the name of SouthingtonSOS held a video game burning event where local citizens were encouraged to bring various forms of violent media to be burned in a dumpster, no doubt a reaction to the recent Connecticut shooting.History Repeats Itself2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I wish I could say I am surprised about this, but sadly the whole media frenzy surrounding violence in video games and movies reminds me of something that already happened once and profoundly affected the media it was accusing: Comic books.
During the early days of comic books, things occasionally got a little risqué. EC Horror comics in particular delighted in rendering extremely gruesome images and disturbing themes in their comics, which were being sold to children unbeknownst to their parents (because naive parents at the time had no reason to suspect comics might contain "inappropriate" material). However all that changed in 1954.
German-American psychiatrist Fredric Wertham was upset about how disturbing some of those
Ms. Male Character - Tropes vs Women in Video GameI hate talking about Anita Sarkeesian, but primarily because there’s such anger induced hatred of the woman herself that people tend to gloss over what she’s saying and ignore the bigger issue by nitpicking her to death. That’s very frustrating for me because whenever I talk about her videos or so much as refer to her by name, the response is almost magical. Saying Anita Sarkeesian on the internet is like a magical incantation to summon trolls.Ms. Male Character - Tropes vs Women in Video Game1 year ago in Personal More Like This
It’s almost impossible to talk about the subject matter (which is the actual issue that needs to be discussed) without devolving into a venom spewing hate storm against the messenger (Anita). And remember, this is coming from someone who DOESN’T LIKE HER EITHER. Her views on “Sucker Punch” were so misjudged and ill informed that it’s almost comical. That being the case, I feel the need to preface this journal with some requests. Please for the love of god if you are going to respond to this journal
Small UpdateI've been gone from the internet for almost 2 1/2 months now, and chances are I won't be coming back for quite a while longer. Nevertheless I just wanted to give a quick update and thank all my fans who have been so supportive of me these past few weeks/months.Small Update2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've been amazed at the number of genuine well wishes that I've received. I think the vast majority of my fans genuinely do enjoy my doodles and cartoons and that the well organized and extremely vocal "haters" of me and my work make up a very very VERY small percentage of my watchers. There have been some absolutely wonderful comments and messages being sent my way, and several of you have even sent me links to advice sites or inspirational posts. I truly do appreciate it. Thank you so very much.
I don't say Thank You enough, I think. Because of my fans I've been able to do some amazing things and I owe you guys a lot. Because of you'all, I've been able to visit another country and make friends from all over the world, somethin
Disney vs Lucas ArtsIf ever you bring up Disney in a conversation, people immediately recite tired old issues with the company that haven't been true for a long time. For example, complaining about the excess of half-assed sequels. That was part of Michael Eisner's regime. When he left the studio the quality Disney was producing suddenly skyrocketed considerably. Likewise the excessive merchandising and branding of Disney related products has also ceased to be as all-consuming now that Eisner is gone. In fact, a lot of the main issues people had with Disney during the 90's and early 2000's was a result of Eisner.Disney vs Lucas Arts2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Since Eisner left, the Disney studio has done a REMARKABLE job in clearing their name of many of the atrocities they had committed during his regime. They promptly turned the animation department around and have even begun doing 2-D animated films again after Eisner said "no." Granted, at the moment 2-D is still in hiatus, but the situation isn't as dire as it use to be and there's still promise

Someone linked me this video after seeing my Fashion Savvy Samus comic, and it quickly became apparent that a LOT of people defending Samus’s god-awful rocket boots were using THIS as their basis for argument. So, since this is the internet, I’m gonna respond to this video interjecting whenever I hear something I agree or disagree with.
1. I agree that we should separate Other M Samus from the rest of cannon based on the fact that it was conceived over a retcon of the character.
2. I agree that a lot of the hatred for Other M Samus came from her BADLY localized English translation and voice acting. I’ve stated many times that if the game had been left in Japanese with English subtitles, I sincerely doubt as many people would’ve had a problem with her “monologuing” than they do with the English version.
3. I do not agree that you should be “offended” that mal
Unspoken rulesRecently I posted a Mass Effect 3 comic, and I've noticed that an unfortunate number of people ignored the description telling everyone that it was an old joke originally posted months ago. You don't have to like the joke, but if your major criticism is "this joke is no longer topical" then that isn't really my fault, is it?Unspoken rules2 years ago in Personal More Like This
So I think I need to re-explain a few things to make sure we're all on the same page.
About brentalfloss comics
I don't write it, I just draw it. Occasionally I'll have some artistic input, but outside that I generally follow the scripts tightly. Dan is in charge of writing, and he's been taking a lot of criticisms to heart lately. He's been experimenting with timing and panel layouts, and he's only going to get better as time goes on, but you've gotta give him time first. As a prime example: We haven't made a masterbation joke in almost a year, and that's entirely from the feedback we were getting. We are listening, it just takes time.
The brentalfloss comics are
A Very Important UpdateI haven't posted here on DA in a while, so this might be new to a lot of you, but if you've been following some of the stuff happening over on tumblr it won't be unexpected. For the past several weeks I've been getting steadily worse both mentally and physically. I've been depressed before, but I've never been as bad as I've been recently. I've lashed out at people, been getting angrier and grumpier, been finding it harder and harder to listen to people giving me positive feedback, and have even started rapidly losing a lot of weight.A Very Important Update2 years ago in Personal More Like This
My enjoyment for drawing has been dropping, and many of you have probably noticed that I've been taking more and more time off lately. For every few comics I post, I tend to spend another week recuperating. But within the past 2 weeks it's spiked so bad that I seriously have to consider what's more important: my health or drawing.
So for the time being I am shutting down. I'll still be working on brentalfloss and updating those here, and the most current

Dunno how many of you have heard this, but apparently the remains of King Richard the 3rd have been found and dug up in a car park in England. The DNA testing confirms that it was the notorious "evil" King who was killed during a battle and his corpse and remains put up on display and buried unceremoniously without a coffin near a church.
If you'd like to know more you can see an article about it here: http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/03/world/europe/richard-iii-search-announcement/index.html?hpt=hp_t1
Sony is teasing something big to be announced at the end of February and everyone is naturally speculating that it's probably the announcement of the PS4. If this is true, it'll definitely be a shock to me since Sony never announces new consoles or hardware before E3. Only Nintendo seems to relish in announcing things with a blatant disregard of conventionality, so it would be very unique of Sony to do the same and announce a new console WELL before E3. Of c

This is another long one, and I apologize but I need to speak my mind. This journal is in response to the "righteously indignant" users making a fuss about me "selling" fanart of copyrighted characters in my recent Adventure Time post. To the person who signed up today just to write a nasty comment on my new Society6 page. To the person who flagged my recent Adventure Time illustration on DA and then proceeded to send me an e-mail about doing it (probably the same person). To the people creating multiple accounts to try and dissuade users from spending their money how they see fit. And to a long list of people who follow everything I do post just to make sure that their negative voice and attitude are the first voices anyone ever sees on all of my work.
It's All A Scam
I'm in an unenviable position. Popular enough to be well known, not popular enough to be making oodles of cash off my stuff. Part of that is my own fault for not really promoting and selling myself,
Late Lesson LearnedWhile doing research for the new SYAC, I actually stumbled upon something truthful on TVtropes.org. Usually I take everything from that site with a grain of salt, but this one bit actually was surprisingly honest and truthful about webcomics:Late Lesson Learned2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Webcomics work on a very different set of standards than other fiction. Almost all webcomic authors are working pretty much entirely alone as they both draw and script their comics and most do not plan any further along than to the end of their current story sometimes not even that far.
Many of them try to adhere to a schedule they aren't really capable of meeting, resulting in them rushing to meet their deadline and making mistakes that should be avoidable. So many of the good 10% lack qualities standard in traditionally professional works. This can be because of the lack of editorial input as well as the lack of lead time. Not all webcomics suffer from this, though, and even the ones that do can still be interesting. Arguably, some str
'Why Are We Even Talking About This?'I get that phrase a lot, that and "over react much?" whenever I bring up ANY issue, be it from a video game, politics, or whatever. There seems to be a lot of people who just don't wanna talk about anything at all, and would much rather these discussions just not exist so they can get on with their lives.'Why Are We Even Talking About This?'1 year ago in Personal More Like This
You'll be unsurprised to learn that I don't agree with that wisdom. In my books, if you don't do anything, nothing is going to happen. If there's an injustice in the world somewhere and you stay silent, that injustice isn't going to fix itself. It will just keep happening. That, my friends, is complacency.
Then of course there are those people who don't believe that the world will ever change, therefor there's no reason to try, and actively try to stop anyone who dares to stand up for something. I can't begin to describe how annoying that mindset is to me. It's almost sadistic in it's very nature, by actively trying to stop people from making the world a better place by being dismissi
What do you think?I am thinking about making a little build a character comic/book type thingy. Its basically like my tip sheet but it will be in comic/book format. I have already split it into four categories, facial features, hair styles, clothes and body types. Basically its a little reference guide, where you can mix and match features to create your own characters, nothing too heavy or technical. I will also be posting the pages online for free since I don't like the idea of any of my tip sheet/references not being accessible. What do you think?2 years ago in Personal More Like This

Mini Movie ReviewsWith a 8 1/2 hour plane flight to and from England, and with downtime a result of stress, illness, and jet lag, I've been watching a lot of movies recently. I won't go into too much detail, but I just wanted to give my impressions on a couple movies I've seen recently.Mini Movie Reviews3 years ago in Personal More Like This
John Carter of Mars
John Carter was a troubled movie in every sense of the word. It was given enormous studio backing, wasn't publicized well, and generally was a box office failure, resulting in a key Disney executive to resign in disgrace.
I won't say that it's the best movie I've ever seen, but it's far far above average and it frustrates me that people didn't see it or take to it. It offers so much wonderful imagery and possibilities for filmmaking it would be a shame to see this potentially new (in the sense that it's new to the big screen) franchise die right at the start.
There are a few weak actors, primarily the Mars princess, but they still nevertheless keep the story running at a nice pace. Plus there a

Sorry I haven't been around much lately. I think I need time away from the internet. Both to relax and to brush up on my artwork. I am genuinely sick of all the hate surrounding my namesake online, and when I say "genuinely," I mean it. The stress that the recent resurgence of trolling I've gotten has caused me to be quite ill. I know I shouldn't let what anonymous people on the internet say about me get to me, but it does. I need time to recuperate, to spruce and fix up SYAC, and to get back to a point where I genuinely enjoy drawing again. Right now there's no love or passion in my artwork, and it's mostly because of my defeated attitude: "Why bother, they'll just tear it apart anyway."
That whole "project positive" has been a complete bust too. I failed to live up to the idea, and in the process got really sick. I guess trying to force out a constant positive attitude like that was a mistake.
Still working, plus a surprise!

I mentioned it briefly yesterday, and thanks to some people filling in the blanks I didn’t have at the time I feel the need to update this with more information for everyone’s sake.
Apparently what happened is that a couple feminists on tumblr (most sources only mentioning on average 4 people) tried to start a “let’s take down 4chan” campaign. 4chan (the source of some of the lowliest, filthiest, scummiest people on the planet), didn’t like that. So they’ve retaliated with a “take down tumblr” campaign. Please bear in mind that there is no real evidence to support this and it might all just be 4chan stirring up shit themselves for the lulz.
4chan users created multiple accounts and then proceeded to spam the popular tumblr tags with excessive amounts of gore, porn, child pornography, and have been taking “selfie” images of underage tumblr users and photoshop them into porn. They've also

Anthology DoodlesIn my most recent SYAC I touched upon how all us Fresh Epics artists started to doodle on the anthology covers.Anthology Doodles3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Then someone suggested fans who bought the anthology should post pictures so others can see the doodles too.
Oh dear, what have I started?
So here's what I'll do. If you bought a Fresh Epic's anthology that we all doodled something funny on, take a picture of the cover and submit it to your scraps and send me a link (Submitted to scraps to keep the clutter down from the main DA pages since technically this isn't suppose to be a site like photobuckets). I'll post them all up in a big journal so everyone can see all the variations.
How's that sound? Sound like fun?
Ok so just to be clear...
1. If you bought a copy of the Fresh Epic's Anthology where we doodled on it, take a picture
2. Upload it to your scraps
3. Post the link here in THIS journal. Don't send me e-mails or notes, it'll just get cluttered that way.
4. I'll post them as I get th

Wooow, this is probably the worst-run convention ever.
Let me start with the good stuff first, since the bad things will be a far longer list :<
As usual, the people are WONDERFUL T-T!!
It's always great to see familiar people from previous years/other cons (though I suck at remembering names, sorrrry) and meet/talk to new people. Some people kept coming back and buying a little more each time, it was really nice ;-;
Also a random girl hugged me and some guys asked to take photos together (which was a little awkward lolll).
:iconno-wei: gave me a GORGEOUS drawing of Katsura & Eli reading Parashi comics!! It's soo sweeetttt I kept taking it out and looking at it every hour or so, all weekend T_T I LOVE IT SO MUCH, THANK YOU SO MUCH!
All in all everyone was super nice and I got so many compliments >o
Helping two lovebirds to be togetherHey guys,Helping two lovebirds to be together2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Well, the Tomb Raider contest is over and I didn't win. But that's cool, and I always love my artworks. Even if they aren't awesome as the other super damnyouallskillfulbastardsandgodsofdigitalarts.... yeah. Ahem.
Anyways, I'm just gonna try to help a friend out. See, its been seven years these two lovebirds have been together, they are engaged and hope to get married soon. My friend Jane was suppose to move to the UK to be with her soon to be husband, Brendon, but due to a recent rejection of her visa, she needs money to re-apply again for the frigging visa (damn you immigration department, get yo shit together).
So she started a mini indiegogo donation project in exchange of artworks and stuff: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/love-across-the-globe
She also has a DevART account here: http://arilysal.deviantart.com/
So yeah, if you do wanna have some artworks done by her, just to help her out, that's cool. Or if you believe in true love and just wanna help out, by all means
