Fishbones Novel DownloadA while back, I removed the ability to download the Fishbones novel because it was being spread around on certain websites without credit/permission. Since then, I have occasionally e-mailed the file to those who asked nicely, but on the whole it has been unavailable. I continue to receive emails asking for the file, but have been so overwhelmed that I've been unable to respond to them.Fishbones Novel Download3 years ago in Personal More Like This
But, I know some of you have a genuine interest in the book, especially after having read the comic. I've decided to offer the book up for download once again under these conditions.

Don't Drink the Turpentine!Hello folks! I've been meaning to discuss this topic here for a while, but I always forget! Well, this blog's topic is about dunDUNDUUUUN studio safety! Now I know, I know, the majority of you, myself included, don't have a private studio to work out of. Your studio may be you livingroom, bedroom, basement, or garage, but there are definitely precautions to be aware of while you're madly creating art. Note: none of this information is here to scare you or deter you from making whatever art you like, it's simply here to help you develop safe studio practices. So let's get started shall we?Don't Drink the Turpentine!2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
This part is specific to those of you who use traditional materials to make your artwork. The supplies we use today are much MUCH safer than those the old master's used, but there are still chemicals and materials you need to be aware of for your own health and well being (as well as those around you). I'll list the materials by
Study ThoughtsWhen studying the scriptures, I was told do what the FBI does. They train their agents to be able to recognize counterfeit money on sight. They do not train by looking and fake bills and comparing to real bills. They train by studying the real bills so hard that they know them inside-out intimately That way a fake is instantly recognizable. That's how it is with the Bible. Mine that book like a gold mine for every speck of treasure in it and it will make every fake thing look so cheap and a total loss compared to it. 1st John chapter 4 also talks about how to test the spirits. It's been 11 years for me and I am still encountering new dimensions in the Bible through my walk (especially in my current difficulties).Study Thoughts1 month ago in Personal More Like This

When I'm looking through books in a brick and mortar store, I flip to the middle of a book for some reason and then put it on the shelf as if I ever had any intention of buying it (I don't know what compels me to buy a book anymore, to be honest). HOWEVER...
When I am here at deviantART, our supercool scrolling thumb feature allows me to see the first sentence of a story and make the determination on whether or not I want to continue reading. That said... I don't read much around here.
Boy, rhetoric is fun. We know why.
I don't judge a book by its cover but goddamn I will judge a story by its first line. It's called a "hook" for a reason. No one wants to read your story if your opening sentence is

TO THE ASPIRING ARTISTS...."The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who'll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you're sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive. You feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that's almost never the case." - Chuck CloseTO THE ASPIRING ARTISTS....2 years ago in Personal More Like This

Common Misconceptions: Copyrights and YouHi peeps! In this “Common Misconceptions” blog we’ll be tackling more copyright issues as they pertain to us artists! This can be somewhat confusing territory, so getting the right information is key to knowing how to effectively protect your work and rights. *Please note that all of the information here applies to the laws in the United States Copyright Office. I have to register for a copyright to own the rights to my work
In the simplest terms, if you made it (and it’s 100% original work) you own the rights to the work. In fact, anything you make that you do not sell the rights to is copyrighted to you for a whopping 70 years after you kick the bucket. If you were commissioned to do a work and retain the rights, that work is copyrighted to you for 95 to 120 years after you
Financial Resources Available to ArtistsFrom time to time around dA you may see your fellow deviants faced with unplanned or unforeseen financial crises write journals asking for donations. One of the great things about dA is that the majority of the collective community here is comprised of like-minded individuals and we are all greatly aware of the financial burdens that we as creatives may face from time to time.Financial Resources Available to Artists10 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
When the need is urgent or if your profession is being threatened because of a catastrophe, you may need more funding than what can be raised through dA. In such a circumstance, it would be in your best interest to seek out emergency funding through a grant. Please note that some of these grants cannot be funded to hobbyists, students, or self taught artists.

and stop being such a spaz
quit being down on yourself because
you're not good after only doing this
for a few months/weeks/years
i still don't stand by the "write a lot" thing
i stand more by deadlines to finish projects.
if that means one a month, then one a month
and look back in a year and see how you've progressed.
IF YOUR WORK IS THE SAME IN DECEMBER AS IT WAS IN JANUARY,
I will peck you.
You don't want me to peck you. But I will.
If you want to get better, you have to do something DIFFERENT
each time you write.
WHY DO YOU THINK ALL MY PROMPTS AT SCREAM
FROM MONTH TO MONTH?!?
because no one needs to write
"my soul is broken"
day after day
week after week
month after month
and think that is going to make them a better writer.
that is delusional.
to improve, you must challenge yourself each time.
in some way or another. no one got better by doing
the same shit all the time.&
Commissions Contracts: A Must Have. Yes, there is a lot to read and Yes you should read it. Copy it, paste it and edit it to suit your needs as a commissioner or commissioned artist. Protect yourself by drafting a contract and understanding it.</a>Commissions Contracts: A Must Have.6 years ago in Art Features More Like This
It has come to my attention that many deviants commission their work and hold proceedings entirely over deviantArt. In the case that your client/commissioned artist begins to use and distribute your work illegally you will need to have a greater standing than simply a bunch of e-mail print outs if you are to go to court over the matter of misuse. Often the matter is over misunderstanding, which a contract will also help clarify for both parties.
I cannot stress how important it is when doing commissions to have physical signed copies of an Artist/Client Commission Agreement or at the very least a signed confirmation of engagement. It takes longer to organise, especially with overseas clients, but it protects the rights of both parties to the work and is worth the day or so
Do Artists Matter?Do we matter?Do Artists Matter?1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I'm specifically talking about "us" as designers, artists, or creative people. Do artists matter?
I have two personal stories that have helped me gauge and answer that question for myself. I hope they help you too.
(SIDE NOTE: I believe in a God and I believe that God loves me and leads my path but that I have free will and can turn from his leading and do my "own thing". Both of these stories have a TON of "God flavoring" that would make them much longer, so know that they are there if you want to read between the lines and find them. In short, both stories are answers to prayer.)
After 9/11 I felt worthless. Making cartoons just wasn't important in the new post 9/11 world. Firemen, policemen, construction workers, teachers, healthcare workers, architects- really, anyone that contributes to rebuilding our world and its infrastructure, those people had important jobs to do. Do you belittle yourself and your arts ?Dear members ,Do you belittle yourself and your arts ?8 months ago in Personal More Like This
I have been told so many times by others that they feel that their arts is not up to par and is pale comparison to other "GREAT Artist" that exist here on deviantart .
To me , art is something that is suppose to be enjoyed and its suppose to make you happier but the amount of pain and suffering that I see these people whom i care dearly for in this group is really starting to me very worried . My dear friends , please do not think so lowly of yourself , you are who you are alright ?
Seriously , if you are feeling terrible about your current arts , try to seek out a 2nd or even 3rd party view of it . What you may not like may be perfect to others so dont be afraid to speak up . Also one more thing , when some one gives you a bad critique , it doesnt necessary means that your art is BAD , it doesnt work this way . You have to ask yourself this question about these so call critiques
1) Arethey at the level where they can give you or ANYONE a critique ?
2) Are they sincerely

We're back at Comic-Con!
Last year, our sponsorship of Artists' Alley was a huge success. We were able to provide a more comfortable environment for the artists, display their art on huge screens over the Alley, and let people attending the convention draw with deviantART muro on fantastic digital screens. We plan to do this and more in 2012 as we take on the great pleasure of sponsoring Artists' Alley at San Diego Comic-C

It has been an integral part of my growth as an illustrator. So thank you and happy birthday!
Francisco was one of the reasons why I joined DA. His work instantly caught my eye when I was young. I finally met Francisco at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo this year. Such a nice dude. Can't thank him enough for being such a huge inspiration on my art.
Arnold Tsang and the UDONcrew was another huge inspiration. When UDON hit the comic scene by storm, I went bonkers for their Street Fighter comics.
