Fishbones Novel DownloadA while back, I removed the ability to download the Fishbones novel because it was being spread around on certain websites without credit/permission. Since then, I have occasionally e-mailed the file to those who asked nicely, but on the whole it has been unavailable. I continue to receive emails asking for the file, but have been so overwhelmed that I've been unable to respond to them.Fishbones Novel Download3 years ago in Personal More Like This
But, I know some of you have a genuine interest in the book, especially after having read the comic. I've decided to offer the book up for download once again under these conditions.
- You can name your price. This means you can pay whatever you see fit, as low as one cent. If you would like to support me or are feeling generous, any amount would be greatly appreciated.
- I can't police the sharing of this file, though it would also be appreciated if you did not post it in its entirely on other websites, especially not without credit.

When I'm looking through books in a brick and mortar store, I flip to the middle of a book for some reason and then put it on the shelf as if I ever had any intention of buying it (I don't know what compels me to buy a book anymore, to be honest). HOWEVER...
When I am here at deviantART, our supercool scrolling thumb feature allows me to see the first sentence of a story and make the determination on whether or not I want to continue reading. That said... I don't read much around here.
Boy, rhetoric is fun. We know why.
I don't judge a book by its cover but goddamn I will judge a story by its first line. It's called a "hook" for a reason. No one wants to read your story if your opening sentence is
She heard a bird chirp outside her window; slowly, she opened her eyes and yawned, the winged animal acting as her alarm clock.

Disney layoffs, 2D animation, and youA very nervous animation student (he didn't say, but I assume he is studying 2D animation) asked me about my opinions on the state of animation these days. What are the companies thinking with laying off all the employees, not doing 2D animation, canceling great TV series, etc.? Are the business people just evil? AND the even bigger question: Is John Lassiter a jerk (or worse) for letting all the 2D animators at Disney go yesterday?Disney layoffs, 2D animation, and you2 years ago in Personal More Like This
MY ANSWER: I have a slightly controversial (for an artist) perspective on businesses and business people. Over all, I like them. At times, I have even been grateful for them. (Steady paychecks should never be taken for granted. Wait till you don't have one one day, then you'll know!) Remember, we live in a world where businesses are expected to make money to stay alive. It's called capitalism. Others call it "business". That means, the animation world isn't any different from any other job/company

Lots of things have been happening recently. I visited the sunshine state for a week with my boyfriend, and just got back over a week ago. It was lovely, we caught 4 days of straight sunshine, no clouds. Perfect beachy weather! Some time earlier in April, we had lots of family over to celebrate my great grandmother's 90th birthday I am so proud of her, you have no idea. To be in perfectly good health, mobile, and still as alert as she was since I've known her is a real blessing indeed.
In other news, I'll be in the artists' area at Otakuthon again this year! The convention runs from the 3rd to the 5th of August, and I will be there all three days, sharing the table with a friend. I'll have more info closer to the date of the con, but I'm looking forward to seeing all the artists I met again <3
And now for the most exciting part of this journal ...
I'd like to introduce you to...

TO THE ASPIRING ARTISTS...."The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who'll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you're sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive. You feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that's almost never the case." - Chuck CloseTO THE ASPIRING ARTISTS....2 years ago in Personal More Like This

What deviantART has done for the art community is absolutely extraordinary and I don't know what I would do without it.
It has been an integral part of my growth as an illustrator. So thank you and happy birthday!
Francisco was one of the reasons why I joined DA. His work instantly caught my eye when I was young. I finally met Francisco at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo this year. Such a nice dude. Can't thank him enough for being such a huge inspiration on my art.
Arnold Tsang and the UDONcrew was another huge inspiration. When UDON hit the comic scene by storm, I went bonkers for their Street Fighter comics.
Chamba is another big UDON

Taking care of your commission and commissionersI believe we have all got commissions here one way or another and if you have not gotten one , well here are some points to take note as you know , I don't see people giving suggestions and advise on this topic .Taking care of your commission and commissioners1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Who are they ?
Commissioners are your customers aka your boss (feel free to disagree with me one this). They are forking out either money or points for you to work on an artwork of either your existing arts or a customized arts . They value you , they respect you and they appreciate your works and that's why they come to you in the first place. This is one thing to remember ...
PAY attention !
Most commissions that I get are usually customized to their request so people , take down notes of what they want and you are not sure , ask them again on the spot instead of working halfway through your arts and asking them again . If you are going to do that, it clearly shows that you have a non challenge attitude and a heck care mindset . That won't reflect well on
Live the dream, don't talk about it!Doug TenNapel, independent comics creator, is an inspiration to me in many ways. He has a fun, accessible art style that is dramatic and fresh. His story telling is always askew in the best of ways. I don't think I've read one of his graphic novels without having some smiles and a surprise or two along the way. On top of that, he is outspoken about almost everything in his life. (I think of him as the Rush Limbaugh of comics- oh man, that sounds really bad, but early Rush, not present day Rush, if that helps.) I agree with most things he states on Facebook. BUT- the thing I am most inspired about him is his drive (in the old days we would call that "work ethic"). The guy does NOT give up. Because of that, he single-handedly will put out a new graphic novel a year. While creating a webcomic. While pitching new TV show development ideas in Hollywood. While running a half marathon. While working freelance jobs.Live the dream, don't talk about it!3 years ago in Personal More Like This

Pageviews and Popularity - The real deal.Be an artist, not a number.Pageviews and Popularity - The real deal.7 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Many members of the artistic community here on DeviantART were shocked by a recent popular news article about how to become popular. I won't link to it because that would be foolish - but the mentality behind it was pageview orientated and made a 'mockery of all that deviantART stands for'.
So - to spell it out for everyone on DeviantART whos ever wanted more pageviews, I went to my nearest and dearest ' popular' artists and asked them what they thought about popularity and statistics.
The answer? They don't give a damn...
Your page views won't help you progress as an artist, and that is what you should be on this art site for.. the art..
Page views can be a feel good thing - I won't deny that - but it does not reflect how much your actual art is viewed, how sucessful or popular your art itself is, or even how popular you are.
Using cheap tactics as described in the article it is easy to generate high numbers of page views even with an EMPTY gallery.

You are a glitch. Unable to leave your game, and unable to be loved by the other game characters. You live in the game Fix-it Felix Jr. You really don't know how you got here. You just... appeared, I guess. You think your a nicelander, but you are very different. You are very tall and slim, you would say you were about 5 foot 9, meaning that the normal nicelanders were at your knee. Like, you said you indeed dressed like a nicelander. You wore a long (f/c) dress and some (f/c) flats. You weren't allowed to be in the game, so you would just hang out in the dump where all the bricks went. After closing, a nice woman named Mary would take you in and she would let you make cakes with her.
One day, at closing, you were making some small cakes with Mary when you looked out the window. You saw the game's villian, Wrec

Working for free is the answer. You might balk at this because some critics say this gives the appearance that there is NO value to skill and talent. However- consider this: Working for free gives you amazing experience. It allows you to practice on someone else's project, see your work in print, establish a reputation and learn- big time. People who won't work for free WILL pay for a course! What better learning experience is there than to work with a client- such as a library or an independent book store or a school- producing poste
