Joan of Arc
Joan of Arc (1412—1431) is the ultimate iconic rebellious teenager. In nineteen years she lived a fuller and more exciting life, effecting the future histories of the two most powerful nations on Earth, than most can even dream of, and then died a martyr’s death for her cause and beliefs, for which she was declared a saint 500 years later. Her story has been told in many novels, movies and comic books. She was the girl who God gave a mission to drive the occupying English out of northern France. So fervid was her demand for action that she was made an advisor to the French high command and led them to victory after victory in the cause of F
Become a better artistTo improve and become really good at art. Isn't that what all of us, artists, secretly wish for? That we, one day, become as good as the idols we've looked up to.Become a better artist2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Well, we can't be all born with mad talent. But there are certainly ways to speed up the process for you! In the journal here, I listed some tips and tricks that helped me getting to the point where I am now. I thought I'd share them with you. And maybe you can add to the list. I'm always willing to learn.
Give up on being a mangaka -- or hold more realistic expectations
Admit it. Most of us here started drawing manga because we liked the style at a certain point. How awesome would it be to one day become a pro in that field. A real manga artist (or mangaka, like they say in Japan)! The truth is... becoming a mangaka isn't that easy. It it were, many more people would be one. First of all, mangaka's live in Japan. That's the only country with a manga industry big enough to actually ha

Nowadays, digital art programmes give us an overwhelming amount of colours to choose from, which makes it tempting to go overboard.
Painting with a limited colour palette challenges you to think outside the box and find new, creative uses for colours. This article aims to help you with that, including tips on how to create a limited colour palette, how to approach painting with it, and an art feature.
About creating a colour palette:
In order to paint with a limited colour palette, you will first have to create said palette.
Here a few pointers for creating your own palette:
You can choose as little as two colours, but since we're talking about limited palettes, you should choose no more than five to start out with. There's a few simple tricks to ensure you get an unified colour palette, but that doesn't mean you absolutely have to use them. Your colours can be as crazy as you want. Knock yourself out.Having a mood in mind for your work will help you with pi
Animution TipsI feel like making an animution tutorial, so everyone can animute!Animution Tips4 years ago in Personal More Like This
But I'm lazy. So you can have some small tips in journal form instead.
Tip One: Frames
'amg ur animution is so smoof wai can't i animute lyk u??'
Which animation looks better? 1 or 2?
Well why don't people animate like 1 then?
Frames! Add as many frames as damned well possible! Surely it's obvious what the difference is?
Don't make a cycle with 8 frames
Make a cycle with 16!
Does a bit of your animation look choppy? Add some inbetween frames!
Onionskinning, I do it all the time. (What's onionskinning? This!)
The reason one animation looks smoother than another is always down to the number of frames.
The framerate I like to use is 0.07 seconds.
That's 12.5 in Flash, 70ms in GIMP and 7 in Fireworks.
You should always stick to one framerate throughout your whole animation.
Nothing going on in your animatio

Screen Recording Program? Update: Help found!Screen Recording Program?1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Thank you everyone for your help. I really appreciate it!
I found a super great help from M4dArtist, who gave me a super detailed instruction that answered all of my possible questions. Couldn't dream for more hahah.
I will go ahead trying out what she gave me there. Hopefully I'll have some vids to show you guys soon!
As many people have shown interest in seeing speedpainting/timelapse videos from me, I think I will try it out.
However I am not so sure which screen recording program I should use.
I want something that's easy to use, but on the other hand also have editing options, have no watermark and such.
I downloaded CamStudio installer, but it asked me to install many extra things that I obviously don't want to install. I just want to install the damn program. orz
So if you can give me a source to download safe installers, I'd highly ap
Tutorials and techniquesQuite a lot of people keep asking me for tutorials and to be honest I see no point in creating yet another strip on how to paint skin/clothes/light/carrots/whatever. There are so many of them out there that it would be simply a waste of time to sit and basically copy what's already been told.Tutorials and techniques4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Instead, I've decided to make a compilation of different tutorials and charts that I personally use to learn how to paint.
The most important thing you need to learn even before starting to read a tutorial is that all walk-throughs are meant for you to understand how things work. My point is that after reading and later practicing a tutorial called 'how to paint a glass duck' you should be able to paint not only a glass duck but also anything else made of glass. You should concentrate on understanding the rules and patterns instead of trying to copy what you see on the image. Otherwise you'll end up knowing how to paint only a few things from only one perspective and one lightning pattern.

Over the years I have produced a range of tutorials on artistic use of the computer. Most of them concerns rather general concepts and can hopefully give something regardless of which program you are using or even be of some interest for traditional, non-digital artists. Some examples of my art can be found in the gallery.
That said, to get the most out of these you should know that I mainly use the open-source image manipulation program GIMP. I also work a lot with the painter program MyPaint. These are both very powerful programs capable of great artistic expression. Being open-source programs, they are both legally free to download and use without any cost. They exist for many platforms, including Linux, Mac and Windows, so they are worth trying out if you haven't already.
The tutorials listed below tend are (ver

White Roses for an Eternal BondThere is a song, White Rose of Athens, sung by Nana Mouskouri, and with its haunting lyrics, it was one of my mother's favorites. "So goodbye my love till then Till the white rose blooms again" I had been living in Athens Greece for six years, and it was from there that I sent my mother the first gift of white roses as a "Mother's Day" gift. But I sent it on my birthday. In my early twenties, I came to the realization that my birthday was not only about me being born on that day. The special day was also about my mother, who had given me the most wonderful gift of all... life! How can it be that Mother's Day and Birthdays have been so unnaturally "separated?"White Roses for an Eternal Bond3 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This

PE: The Impact of Color1. - WHAT IS COLOR?PE: The Impact of Color3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Color is the aspect of things that is caused by differing qualities of light being reflected or emitted by them, as received by the human eye and processed by the human brain. It is a function of light and biology, not an exact science, no two people can see it exactly the same.
The human eye and brain together translate light into color. Light receptors within the eye transmit messages to the brain, which produces the familiar sensations of color. Newton observed that color is not inherent in objects. Rather, the surface of an object reflects some colors and absorbs all the others. We perceive only the reflected colors. Thus, red is not "in" an apple. The surface of the apple is reflecting the wavelengths we see as red and absorbing all the rest. An object appears white when it reflects all wavelengths and black when it absorbs them all.
"Colors are the deeds of light, its deeds and sufferings."
(Johann Wolfgang von Goethe)

Advice for people who want to go to art colleges!Let's talk college applications, folks.Advice for people who want to go to art colleges!1 year ago in Personal More Like This
So you want to go to an art school? The three things you're probably going to need to worry about most aside from academics and expect from most colleges are essays, letters of recommendation and your portfolio!
I have a class in school right now called Independent Senior Mentorship that everyone in my grade is supposed to take, and in the class we have to choose a career field we want to go into and get a mentor to teach you about that field (For anyone wondering, I choose animation and I got the CEO and Founder of Frederator Studios to be my mentor). The other requirement of the class is that we have to do a bunch of college research and get all of our applications turned in! So I've been going through a lot of different colleges and seeing if I want to apply and here's what I found. (Keep in mind, before this school year started I did next to no college research)
Art colleges will probabl

“When I left high school, I had all my plans to go to college, but I had no money. And I decided then, the best thing for me to do is not worry about getting money to go to college — I will educate myself. I walked down the street, I walked into a library, I would go to the library three days a week for ten years and I would educate myself. It’s all FREE, that’s the great thing about libraries! Most of you can afford to go to college, but if you wanna educate yourself completely, go to the library and educate yourself. When I was 28 years old, I graduated from Library.”

I've had people from time to time ask me how I pixel, and I've never really been sure how to explain. It hasn't been until the past few years that i've really thought too much about what I was doing beyond experimenting and learning new things. I think I've rounded out some basic guidelines I usually follow and a friend wanted some advice so I decided to attempt some sort of explanation
Below are some step by step images and commentary. Please note that there is no one right way to create a piece of art. This Step by Step is meant only to impart some understanding of how I do things . In Pixel art alone there are many many 'styles'. I encourage anyone reading to look up more than one tutorial and seek critique if trying to learn their own pixel style.
Please excuse any spelling mistakes, and take note that I use Photoshop 7.0, but the same principals sh

Hands and feet are pretty hard to draw. Lots of artists struggle with them! Even when other things come naturally, hands and feet can still be quite a problem. The best way to get better at drawing hands and feet is to study them!
The Challenge: Sketch or draw 50 feet AND 50 hands from reference photos or life.
Deadline: The deadline has passed for this challenge, but you can still participate and make yourself a better artist!
You can post them as one giant post, in groups, one at a time, however you want! But please make a FOLDER in your gallery and put them all in there then send me a link to the folder. (If you do one submission with ALL of them at once, then you don't need the folder.)

The possibilities of digital painting and digital art in general are almost infinite. There is basically nothing you cannot do as long as you just know how to approach it. Yet an abundance of programs and tools has both advantages and disadvantages. Knowing what to favour and what to avoid can be both a huge time saver and help you sidestep frustration.
What we will focus on in this article are some basic tools and techniques of digital painting; we'll try to root out pitfalls and see how to avoid them. Mind that all of the points mentioned below aren't rules carved in stone; there are always cases where breaking the rules can be much more fruitful for a certain effect than following them too strictly. With time and practice you will gain good judgment over when to follow the guidelines and when to leave them aside.
