Devynn Interviews AmandaDrage:
Bio: written by Devynn
Amanda Drage was born and lives in Northamptonshire, England. Amanda began her art career as an equine artist, drawing horses from a very young age. She has been on deviantART for eight years in which she rose to prominance among the equine art community, her attention for detail, varied mediums, and intimate style catching attention with every piece she posted. In recent years, she began to branch out from equine art, trying her hand at wildlife art, where she excelled. Today, she continues to balance w

Thank you for allowing me to interview you, let's start off by having you introduce yourself.
Hi! My name is Janine, I'm 22 years old, living in Ontario, Canada.
How many years ago did you begin sculpting and what got you interested in this medium?
I started sculpting around the end of 2007. I had been browsing deviantart looking at breyer customs and came across original sculptures others had made. I had never heard of polymer clay and had assumed you needed a huge kiln to sculpt. I decided to try it out and have been hooked ever since!
How long, on average,

Last year you took the internet by storm with your drawing Redheaded Girl - Ballpoint Pen, what was it like getting that much attention to your art?
It was new and rather unreal. I never expected something like that to happen!
in the beginning it was a bit frightening, everyone dreams of becoming really popular, but when magazines, blogs, radios, tvs and people flood your inbox all of a sudden in a media frenzy it can feel kind of scary.
Did you ever expect your art to become so popular?
Like I said no. Since I started drawing when I was 2 I always kept my works in drawers, for myself, for my own

PE DDs: When It's Not Always PositiveWhen DDs Go AwryPE DDs: When It's Not Always Positive2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Daily Deviations, or “DDs,” are frequently held in very high esteem on deviantART. After all, what artist does not want his or her work displayed for more than 20 million viewers to see and admire? The benefits of receiving a DD feature include increased exposure for your work and a day in the spotlight for you as an artist. Many people therefore view DDs as badges of honor, awards that make them proud and validate the time they spend in our community.
Be careful what you wish for!
Don’t get us wrong-- DDs are wonderful for the purposes listed above. But, they can also bring a lot of drama upon the artist, especially if they are controversial.
Let’s talk about some of the sources of this drama.
Some people feel that people who post art-- and especially those whose art is worthy of a Daily Deviation-- should have thick enough skin to accept criticism as well as praise. They argue that criticism is part

PE: Daily Deviations - The Myth and the LegendDaily Deviations, or DDs . . . for some deviants, receiving one is the epitome of awesomesauce in the deviantART world. For others, they are a nice way to show off the work of lesser-known artists. Still others treat them as a special way to bring attention to great art that exemplifies works being done by a particular gallery or community.PE: Daily Deviations - The Myth and the Legend2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Perhaps because there are so many different ways of conceptualizing DDs, there are also many myths and misconceptions. I would like to address some of those myths by responding to the ones most frequently heard. Please note that these opinions are mine and reflect my experiences with the photomanipulation community, but perhaps they will be informative nevertheless.
Myth 1: DDs should always be perfect.
To many of us, the ideal Daily Deviation goes to an artist with amazing talent whose work draws you in and makes you think, "Wow, everyone needs to see this!" A DD should move you, inspire you, and provoke you to think, b
Traditional and Digital Mixed MediaFix That Miscat! is a series of articles aiming to help you distinguish between galleries that are commonly confused or abused in the category system here on deviantART. In this occasion we'll talk about Mixed Media, both Traditional and Digital.Traditional and Digital Mixed Media1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
Mixed Media within deviantArt refers to artwork in the making of which more than one medium has been employed. For example, a drawing that combines color pencils, watercolors and inks in the same canvas.
To be considered as Mixed Media, an artwork needs to combine 2 or more traditional or digital mediums. However a big misconception is that Mixed Media refers only to artworks combining digital AND traditional and this is not entirely true. The combination can also be between traditional mediums only or digital mediums only and in fact, when you intend to submit to this category, you'll

Over the past few months, we've been diligently working on cleaning up the category tree of old and unused categories. While most of this will go unnoticed by the community, what you will notice is the change from "Miscellaneous" galleries to "Other". The reason for this change is simple. The concept of Miscellaneous leads one to believe that it's a junk drawer category for everything under the sun when the intention was to be an "Other" category for deviations that don't fit well in other sub-categories of the tree. We're also working on u

PE Art Features and Daily DeviationsDaily Deviations:PE Art Features and Daily Deviations1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
As per :faq61:, The Daily Deviation is a daily feature chosen from galleries here on deviantART.
A small assortment of submissions are chosen each day by a select group of staff/volunteer members who wish to showcase an image which they found impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large.
Benefits of suggesting Daily Deviations:
helping artists gain more exposure
deviantART is such a large website with many members, often great art can fall through the cracks and go unnoticed as a result. Daily Deviations are usually a wonderful way to put a bit of a spotlight on a particular piece or artist. Often people like to focus on the lesser known artists, though it may be worth noting that even deviations uploaded by popular artists can at times use more exposure as well
PE Note to Daily DeviationHello all,PE Note to Daily Deviation2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
In this section of Daily Deviations (DD) PE week I wanted to write about how your suggestions are processed and then turned into DDs, but with a bit more of a focus on the process of how we Community Volunteers (CVs) utilize the note system. I felt it was a place where some common problems arise which may not be talked about all too often resulting in confusion and frustration for both suggesters and CVs.
The Note System
I think many are aware of this but just for the sake of being clear, CVs use the same exact note system as every other user on the site. We do not have any special bells and whistles to organize our notes other than the same tools you all are also given. There is no special tool or program that sorts or does anything special with our DD suggestions for us, it is entirely up to us, how we choose to sort them in our note system.
Let's take a closer look at how the process works, shall we?
PE: Know what your CVs can DDDuring my term as a Community Volunteer who accepts Daily Deviation suggestions it has become very clear that some people simply aren't sure who to suggest a given piece to for a DD. While the majority of suggesters have a pretty good grasp on which CVs to send the suggestion to, there are enough suggestions being received which would be better sent to a different CV to warrant some education on the subject.PE: Know what your CVs can DD1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Each DD selecting CV is assigned a gallery
Some people believe that anyone with an ^ symbol in front of their username can give out DDs and often there is no knowledge that we as CVs look over specific galleries which are the galleries we are allowed to select DDs from.
When looking over :faq18: you will notice the different galleries followed by one or more CVs who watch over those specific galleries. To be very simplistic, if the piece you wish to suggest is in the Anthro gallery you'd then suggest it to KovoWolf who watches ov

PE: Quality vs Quantity when suggesting DDsWhile this subject is pretty straight forward sometimes it helps to give a little reminder to prevent people from getting caught up in the moment and not thinking things through entirely.PE: Quality vs Quantity when suggesting DDs1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
The goal of this article is to remind people that less can often be more.
Quantity vs Quality
There have been times where we've seen that some artists believe sending multiple suggestions of a certain piece will get the piece a DD. I mean hey, if we send enough suggestions for it the CV must automatically love it too, right? Unfortunately, this simply isn't the case.
As CVs we will select a DD based on the content and not by how many people seem to believe it should be a DD. If we are to recieve many suggestions on a piece we might question if there is something there that we are not seeing in the piece which makes it DD worthy, however intentionally spamming us just creates more work for us which is completely unne
Seniority Announcement - December 2011This article marks the latest announcements detailing the latest additions to the dizzy height of Senior members in our community. With just over 800 deviants holding the highly saught after ` -- it's clearly a moment that deserves recognition.Seniority Announcement - December 20112 years ago in Personal More Like This
So what does it take to become a Senior? That's a question many have asked and have never really been able to get a straight answer on. Some have gained Seniority as a thank you for their time spent as a Volunteer, or to recognise their contribution to a particular project or collaborative action. Some have gained Seniority because of their community spirit, providing help and assistance to many other deviants and taking time out to promote the work of others in the community.
Some people have received Seniority because of their artistic endevours, having a positive influence on their peers by sharing resources, providing constructive criticism and by being a voice that stands out above the many others who deviate to be recognised
