Seniority Announcements - January 2013Seniority Announcements - January 20132 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
This article marks the latest additions to the dizzy height of Senior members in our community. With just over 1000 deviants holding the highly saught after ` -- it's clearly a moment that deserves recognition.
So what does it take to become a Senior? That's a question many have asked and have never really been able to get a straight answer on. Some have gained Seniority as a thank you for their time spent as a Volunteer, or to recognise their contribution to a particular project or collaborative action. Some have gained Seniority because of their community spirit, providing help and assistance to many other deviants and taking time out to promote the work of others in the community.
Some people have received Seniority because of their artistic endevours, having a positive influence on their peers by sharing resources, providing constructive criticism and by being a voice that stands out above the many other

We're looking for game players to come and join in our deviantART Birthday Event! In just a short while 3wyl and myself are hosting an interpretation of a British game show called Pointless. The idea of the game is that you have to guess the least popular answer to a multiple answers question. You will be awarded points accordingly, those with the most points will win - but you will have used pointless answers to get there!
We'll have pre-judged the least popular and most popular answers by asking a panel of CVs beforehand for their responses. Want an example?
Name a Film Starring Tom Cruise
Okay so Mission Impossible is a really high answer and if you said that one, you'd get lots of points. Which isn't good! If you said Rain Man - you'd possibly be getting less points. But if you said something like Endless Love or Taps, then you'd be hitting on an answer tha
PE DDs: When It's Not Always PositiveWhen DDs Go AwryPE DDs: When It's Not Always Positive3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Daily Deviations, or “DDs,” are frequently held in very high esteem on deviantART. After all, what artist does not want his or her work displayed for more than 20 million viewers to see and admire? The benefits of receiving a DD feature include increased exposure for your work and a day in the spotlight for you as an artist. Many people therefore view DDs as badges of honor, awards that make them proud and validate the time they spend in our community.
Be careful what you wish for!
Don’t get us wrong-- DDs are wonderful for the purposes listed above. But, they can also bring a lot of drama upon the artist, especially if they are controversial.
Let’s talk about some of the sources of this drama.
Some people feel that people who post art-- and especially those whose art is worthy of a Daily Deviation-- should have thick enough skin to accept criticism as well as praise. They argue that criticism is part

Calling all beta testers, bug lovers and feature loving deviants.
I have exciting news! devBUG is looking for some new deviants to be Alpha Tester!
But what is an alpha tester?
An Alpha tester is a bit like a Beta tester only they get to test out new features before Beta testers do.
So, what do alpha testers get to do?
As an alpha tester you'll have the chance to talk to staff and developers about new and upcoming features, and help find and report any bugs that there may be, before it goes to beta testers or th
Celebrating Diversity #1Welcome to this new series of Art Features! Even tho most of you are aware of the many many galleries and categories here on dA, I think most of us move in a sort of "comfort zone" between Galleries, Channels or Groups that provide us with a constant flow of new art. And sometimes we forget all the other great artforms, styles and media that are out of our "comfort zone". And today I want to step out of that warm and cuddly place and feature some awesome works from places on dA I don't usually visit!Celebrating Diversity #13 years ago in Art Features More Like This

Sorry to bother you...Hello all,Sorry to bother you...1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I thought I'd take a moment today to write a journal which is probably long overdue. I believe there is a common misconception floating around that CVs are so busy, that when you send us DD Suggestions, or other messages, you are being a bother.
Quite regularly the DD Suggestions I receive start with something along the lines of "I am sorry to bother you..." or "I know you are busy but.."
I'd like to assure you all that no suggestions you send, or any other type of contact made with me (or any other CV for that matter) is something to feel sorry or bad about (unless you are legitimately harassing us or something).
I've often heard community members talk about how many notes CVs get daily (often this number appears to be near 100) and I feel the need to say that this is very far from the truth. On average I receive maybe 5 notes a day. On a slow day I may not get any at all and on a busy day I may get up to 10. While I can not speak

Everyday we're CV'ingAs a Community Volunteer - I do as much or as little within the community that I feel comfortable doing. We're not pressured to do this and that, we don't even have to give a Daily Deviation every day, we choose how we promote our selected galleries/chats and forums and we're not fixed to any specific rule on how much or how little we do. But I do believe that it's important to share with you just what the community volunteers do and why we do it. More importantly it's so easy to get lost on this site full of many people - and miss out on the awesome that's going on. So I'm going to share with you exactly what the latest awesome is...Everyday we're CV'ing3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This

Self Suggesting DD'sThank you so much for all the +favs, the comments and +devwatchs I've received and still am for my Daily Deviation "Carried Away". You guys are awesome and I appreciate your support so much!Self Suggesting DD's3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Now I have a confession to make... I self suggested this deviation to DomiSM, so it didn't come as a surprise I received it.
I know from being a volunteer that some people feel that DD's should be suggested by others or that it should be a surprise. Well no, not always. Sometimes you have to fight for your work to gain exposure. Gone are the days where deviantART was a small site... you need to learn how to use the channels on dA to get the exposure your work deserves.
These days, I work in vector and the high pecentage of work I upload to dA is client work. A huge part of being a Freelancer is marketting yourself and putting yourself out there. This is why self suggesting yourself for a Daily Deviation should be

PE DD Week: Why did an icon get a DD?Why did an icon get a DD?PE DD Week: Why did an icon get a DD?3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Daily deviations tend to be a controversial topic within the community and whether or not a DD is worthy of the feature is, as such, often discussed.
As a CV for Icons & Handhelds I often find it interesting to read these discussions, since that way I can see what the community expects of the features, but the recent negativity on the Icons & Handhelds DDs is something I would like to address, which is why I'm thankful I'm given this opportunity during the Daily Deviation PE-week. I will try to explain why I think icons and handhelds are worthy of the feature and why they may be dismissed just a bit too quickly.
Let's begin at the beginning.
When deviantART first started, it was a site that mainly geared towards customization. Be it wallpapers or icons, if you take a look at some of the first DDs. So how come there'

DDs: To select or not to selectHey wazaaaaaap!DDs: To select or not to select3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
In my last journal I talked about my stance on Daily Deviations. In this occasion I'll tell you some of the reasons that make me choose some artworks, and the reasons that make me not choose others. Hopefully it will be interesting for some, useful for others or simply a good reading if you're really boring.
What makes me choose a deviation to be featured?
Such a simple question with such an indefinite answer, and I apologize in advance for giving such a vague response but I'll put it simple: Sometimes not even I know!
There's not a secret formula I have to determine if a piece is going to be featured or not, sometimes I really have a hard time making a decision and it really is a case-by-case situation. The deviation needs to STAND OUT, be different, have that "wow" factor. Unfortunately this is very difficult to explain. However ther
Spirit Day 2012"Ultimately, I want Spirit Day to make just one person feel little bit better about his or herself, to feel safe enough in their own skin and to be proud of who they are" - Brittany McMillanSpirit Day 20123 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
In memory of the young LGBT people who lost their lives to suicide, Brittany encouraged her friends to wear purple on a day in October -- a day that came to be known as Spirit Day. Since then, GLAAD has helped turn Spirit Day into a global event that inspires millions of individuals, celebrities, TV personalities, media outlets, companies and schools to wear purple in a stand against bullying.
While Spirit Day does focus on the LGBT community, I believe that it's anti-bullying message is relevant to every community. It only get's better, if we take the pledge to make it so.

Odyssey, Clive and PETAFor those just tuning in, I have the privilege of working very closely with the Odyssey II Project with Clive Barker and I couldn't be more excited. The following is my personal opinion on the project, Clive and PETA, so I encourage you to direct any conversation regarding what you read here, to the comments below, so I can respondOdyssey, Clive and PETA3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
First, I'm a huge fan of Clive Barker's work. His artwork and his stories have entranced me for years but beyond that, he's truly a deviant. CliveBarker has become an active member of the community, submitting his artwork and commenting on others. He's a perfect fit in my opinion, but that's not entirely why I'm writing today.
Clive's initial choice for a cause to donate the proceeds of this project to, is PETA and if you've been watching the ODYSSEYPROJECT unfold, you've certainly seen several opinions in regards to the organization.
If you know me at all,
Community Operations Newsletter - June 2014In this, the first of a new, regular newsletter, I'd like to take a moment to give you an overview of the Community Operations department.Community Operations Newsletter - June 20141 year ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
DeviantART's Community Operations Department encompasses the Help Desk and the Copyright and Etiquette Administration (CEA) teams. These teams are dedicated to providing a high level of support within the community via our help desk portal as well as what we call the "Moderation Desk", which is where all of the deviations that have been reported as being unsuitable or in violation of our policies, await review from a member of staff.
Community Operations Staff are spread out across the globe on a mix of many time zones. Some work from a physical office in deviantART HQ in Los Angeles, some work from their homes in America, Canada, Bahamas, Germany and the UK. This may not sound like a real job, but like any employment, there are clearly laid out roles and responsibilities as well as continuous supervision to ensure that people are meeting expectati
Literature Previews, DDs, and YouIntroducing a new policy regarding Literature Gallery DD features.Literature Previews, DDs, and You3 years ago in Literature Features More Like This
While not everyone uses preview images and they're not technically part of the work, we're going to require that preview images be properly credited for future features. This does include preview images you've customized that use texture or other such resources.
An important note: Not all images are stock. If an image isn't stock and you want to use it as your preview, please make sure that you've obtained explicit permission from the artist. We will also accept previewed stories that were done for a picture-based prompt if the prompter asked permission to use those images. Of course, you'll need to link to the prompt in your comments.
**Also, if you are using credited stock but the stock terms say it's not to be used like that, someone—okay, it's me—is going to tell the stock creator. Please respect people who put up these resources and read their own rules before using. I've seen a few that w
Community Voices: What is a Daily Deviation?DDs: The deviantART definitionCommunity Voices: What is a Daily Deviation?3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
So, as the title says, What in the world IS a Daily Deviation (DD), anyway?
You know what deviantART says about it, right? Under :faq61: it says:
A small assortment of submissions are chosen each day by a select group of staff/volunteer members who wish to showcase an image which they found impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large.
That says nothing about a DD being a perfect specimen of art-- in fact, it doesn't even use the word "art" at all. Basically, as CVs, when we are giving a DD, we are doing so because we think the image is interesting and well-done and deserves your attention. It may be technically exquisite. It may be technically quite good but exceptionally thought-provoking. It may be exceedingly creative. It may be all of these things! Above all else, it should stand out in some way from others in that medium or gallery.
