A Few Gimp 2.8 Speed TipsAre you working with a ton of big layers? If you work like I do, you are probably making use of a lot of layer masks. Although I love layer masks, using them means that you are also requiring Gimp to keep a lot more data, some of which is not even on the canvas, and never will be.A Few Gimp 2.8 Speed Tips2 years ago in Personal More Like This
For example, let's say you are using fur from a photo of a wolf. Most of this image (the head, eyes, ears, and the rest of the body in general) is not being used. Plus, the photo is probably a high-resolution photo may be rotated awkwardly, so that most of the image is not even on the canvas. If you do this 10-15 times, you will begin to notice that Gimp will start to crawl.
To fix this, you're going to want to do 2 things.
1.) make sure you have Gimp optimized for your computer by watching lesson 2 of my gimp for beginners series here: http://gimpedtutorials.com/index.php/how-to-use-gimp-for-beginners-lesson-2-under-the-hood/
2.) occasionally click on the crop tool, and crop the
What's Wrong With Praise? So this is another one of those artistic taboos we're never suppose to talk about, apparently. The idea of giving back positive feedback to an artist. It's seen as "coddling" as "babying" as "inflating the ego" and has such intense negative associations. It seems to be generally accepted that the only way to critique someone's work is to point out ONLY the negative parts. Any attempt to point out anything positive or something you liked about the work is seen as being unhelpful towards the artist's growth. What's Wrong With Praise?1 year ago in Personal More Like This
And frankly I think that's a bunch of hogwash.
Speaking from my own experience, I rarely ever get anything positive said about my work in a constructive way. I might get a lot of "good jobs" or people talking happily about my comics because they made them laugh, but I rarely if ever get any comments that go into detail explaining WHY I did something right. On the flip side, the amount of negative criticism and nitpicking is almost hilariously rampant, not just on my artwork but on th
Need faces? We've already had "Need references?" and "Need textures?", time for something else. This actually is about references again, but about these more specified ones. Emotions. How many times have you wondered why is that the faces you draw look as empty as dead? Depicting moods can be a very hard task. Try sketching yourself (yes, a mirror would be a nice thing to have in this case), pull faces at diffrent angles, change light. And take a look at these below. Need references?Although drawing and painting "from life" is way much more effective and efficient than drawing from photos (I'll be writting a separate journal about this soon, no worries), you simply can't have a person to model for you every time you want to create something. And there are situations when you don't exactly know how to place that bloody hand or if the foot is drawn correctly. Similiar issues can happen with architecture, perspective... with everything you draw. Then, when you look for help, you may stumble upon Stock gallery and you find awesome things. Remember about crediting the used stock directly!Need references?2 years ago in Art Features More Like This

Top Seven Mistakes Made by Aspiring IllustratorsI wrote this thing. If you want to repost it on your blog or journal, please credit me with: Article by illustrator Kristina Gehrmann - www. mondhase.deTop Seven Mistakes Made by Aspiring Illustrators2 years ago in Personal More Like This
1. Selling yourself as a beginner
I found a prime example of this in a forum for artists seeking work. The thread title was „Starting-out artist looking for a chance",, and the thread told that the artist is „looking for a client for whom I may draw" and has „just graduated from art college".
We all were at this point once, but usually it takes too long to realize that „beginner" is the wrong mindset, even if you are one. Such statements sound like excuses and are guaranteed to weaken your position. Don't make excuses. Do not justify your work, and do not justify your prices. This is a tricky habit to acquire since we're not very confident by nature, but remember the image you wan

Here's a list of the prizes the winners will get at the end of the contest. There will be 6 WINNERS, that means that there will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for each category. We listed the prizes only once, because winners of the first category will get exactly the same prizes as winners of the second category (if it says that winner of 1st p

Art For a CauseGame artists from around the world are uniting to create an art book to support Kevin Griffith's (CowAndCheese) battle with terminal lung cancer.Art For a Cause1 month ago in Personal More Like This
Kevin Griffith is a senior artist on the Diablo 3 team at Blizzard and has been fighting a rare and ruthless form of cancer known as Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma (ASPS).
The art book will feature original fan art from Kevin's favourite games and everything about this project screams deviantART to me! We have a ridiculously talented community of artists and I'm calling on YOU to put your skills to work for an amazing cause.
All proceeds from the campaign will be donated to cover medical costs for KKG and to iCureASPS.

and this is what I tell them.
Find out for yourself what you really want to do with art, there are so many different professions.
Graphic designer, Concept artist (mobile and high end), Illustrator of bookcovers, or card games.
Once you can make your pick, or at least pick 1 or 2 you must find the best work on the market in those fields.
Find out what makes the best art of your favorite field the best art. What do they paint? How do they paint it? With knowing this you can find out about the things you need to study.
The most basic study aims are the following:
What forms of light art there? And how does it influence things?
The book Color and Light by James Gurney will give you a lot of insight.
How do you paint shapes? How do you light them the right way?

*CLOSED* Make Me an OC Contest. WINNERS!Thanks For all the Nice OC`s that I got for the Contest, And I have Now Decided The Winners!*CLOSED* Make Me an OC Contest. WINNERS!1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
To Decide the winners was not Easy, as always. Many really good OCs in the contest, and what I was looking for was the following:
How Good the OC Picture was.
All rules was Followed.
Whatever I could use them Or Not.
And Heart. Yes, I fell in love with some of the OC`s.
I most say that the 3 top winners was quite easy. But the last 2 was hard, very hard. So I ended up with Buying 2 of the Pictures + the 5 winners.
All OC`s in this contest accepted the Rules and terms, and they/you can no longer use the OC. You have given me the Rights to use them as my own, and as I want. All Credit for the Original Picture goes to the Original owner. I can also Re-upload the picture.
The 2 Pictures that I have decided to Buy, when I couldn't decide the 5th Winner, is:

Stockers you should knowHey people! So, one of the many questions I get asked about how to improve figure drawing is where to find a suitable model. In a perfect world, friends and family members would sit for us artists for hours on end, however that's highly unlikely especially if you're looking for an "actiony" pose! Also, those of you who are just beginning to draw the figure need to do so from a human model. Drawing from life is, once again, ideal, but stock photos are the next best thing. Plus I'm always harping about dA's great stock so this is the list of some of the absolute best figurative/pose based human stockers on dA:Stockers you should know1 year ago in Art Features More Like This

"The Artist's Guide to Animal Anatomy" by Bammes Gottfried
Books that are good:
" Drawing the Head and Hands" by Andrew Loomis
"Figure Drawing for all it's Worth" also by Andrew Loomis
Books that are ok but from the time perspective I do not recommend them:
