A Few Gimp 2.8 Speed TipsAre you working with a ton of big layers? If you work like I do, you are probably making use of a lot of layer masks. Although I love layer masks, using them means that you are also requiring Gimp to keep a lot more data, some of which is not even on the canvas, and never will be.A Few Gimp 2.8 Speed Tips2 years ago in Personal More Like This
For example, let's say you are using fur from a photo of a wolf. Most of this image (the head, eyes, ears, and the rest of the body in general) is not being used. Plus, the photo is probably a high-resolution photo may be rotated awkwardly, so that most of the image is not even on the canvas. If you do this 10-15 times, you will begin to notice that Gimp will start to crawl.
To fix this, you're going to want to do 2 things.
1.) make sure you have Gimp optimized for your computer by watching lesson 2 of my gimp for beginners series here: http://gimpedtutorials.com/index.php/how-to-use-gimp-for-beginners-lesson-2-under-the-hood/
2.) occasionally click on the crop tool, and crop the
Need faces? We've already had "Need references?" and "Need textures?", time for something else. This actually is about references again, but about these more specified ones. Emotions. How many times have you wondered why is that the faces you draw look as empty as dead? Depicting moods can be a very hard task. Try sketching yourself (yes, a mirror would be a nice thing to have in this case), pull faces at diffrent angles, change light. And take a look at these below. What's Wrong With Praise? So this is another one of those artistic taboos we're never suppose to talk about, apparently. The idea of giving back positive feedback to an artist. It's seen as "coddling" as "babying" as "inflating the ego" and has such intense negative associations. It seems to be generally accepted that the only way to critique someone's work is to point out ONLY the negative parts. Any attempt to point out anything positive or something you liked about the work is seen as being unhelpful towards the artist's growth. What's Wrong With Praise?1 year ago in Personal More Like This
And frankly I think that's a bunch of hogwash.
Speaking from my own experience, I rarely ever get anything positive said about my work in a constructive way. I might get a lot of "good jobs" or people talking happily about my comics because they made them laugh, but I rarely if ever get any comments that go into detail explaining WHY I did something right. On the flip side, the amount of negative criticism and nitpicking is almost hilariously rampant, not just on my artwork but on th

Need references?Although drawing and painting "from life" is way much more effective and efficient than drawing from photos (I'll be writting a separate journal about this soon, no worries), you simply can't have a person to model for you every time you want to create something. And there are situations when you don't exactly know how to place that bloody hand or if the foot is drawn correctly. Similiar issues can happen with architecture, perspective... with everything you draw. Then, when you look for help, you may stumble upon Stock gallery and you find awesome things. Remember about crediting the used stock directly!Need references?2 years ago in Art Features More Like This

Why Cynical Improvement Is Bad For YouSince we're on the subject of taboos, I feel it necessary to talk about this one. This one pisses me off and it's very much a cornerstone to a bigger issue with our artistic community: The idea and assumption that as an artist you MUST improve at all times. 24/7. No exceptions. Every work you produce must be 10x better than your last. You must constantly strive for perfection. To ignore this "truth" is to commit the terrible sin of rejecting the very concept of improvement, and you will never break out of your "comfort zone."Why Cynical Improvement Is Bad For You1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I'm here to tell you that this is hogwash.
You should strive to improve. Never say that I don't encourage improvement. It's why you go to school, why you go to college, and why after college you continue to work on your art. You always want to be better. The problem is that far too many people have a strictly binary concept of what "better" is and on how to "improve."
First off, there is no pinnacle of perfection. There is no
Need textures? We had a feature of drawing references yesterday, so let's take a look at textures now. I must admit that I'm a total freak when it comes to this topic. Top Seven Mistakes Made by Aspiring IllustratorsI wrote this thing. If you want to repost it on your blog or journal, please credit me with: Article by illustrator Kristina Gehrmann - www. mondhase.deTop Seven Mistakes Made by Aspiring Illustrators2 years ago in Personal More Like This
1. Selling yourself as a beginner
I found a prime example of this in a forum for artists seeking work. The thread title was „Starting-out artist looking for a chance",, and the thread told that the artist is „looking for a client for whom I may draw" and has „just graduated from art college".
We all were at this point once, but usually it takes too long to realize that „beginner" is the wrong mindset, even if you are one. Such statements sound like excuses and are guaranteed to weaken your position. Don't make excuses. Do not justify your work, and do not justify your prices. This is a tricky habit to acquire since we're not very confident by nature, but remember the image you wan
The 50 Foot / 50 Hand Challenge! CLOSED!THIS CHALLENGE IS NOW CLOSED! But feel free to do it just for fun/improvement!The 50 Foot / 50 Hand Challenge! CLOSED!2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
This was a drawing challenge from :iconSenshiStock: and :iconmostlyguystock:!
Hands and feet are pretty hard to draw. Lots of artists struggle with them! Even when other things come naturally, hands and feet can still be quite a problem. The best way to get better at drawing hands and feet is to study them!
The Challenge: Sketch or draw 50 feet AND 50 hands from reference photos or life.
Deadline: The deadline has passed for this challenge, but you can still participate and make yourself a better artist!
You can post them as one giant post, in groups, one at a time, however you want! But please make a FOLDER in your gallery and put them all in there then send me a link to the folder. (If you do one submission with ALL of them at once, then you don't need the folder.)
HOW TO QUALIFY: In order to make this a little easier for myself, please number yo

Best way to record yourself drawing digitallyUpdate: Added section about CONVERTING video sessions below.Best way to record yourself drawing digitally3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Quick bit of help here, because I'm not sure if everyone knows the best way to handle this if you want to record your progress while drawing in Photoshop, Manga Studio, Painter, whatever.
IF YOU ARE USING WINDOWSYou may have tried some of the screen recorders out there like CamStudio, FRAPS, or some free ones out there. You may have noticed, or had become frustrated with, the fact that many of these programs cause a significantly huge hit on your system's performance. When you try drawing in Photoshop, your tablet response comes to a screeching halt. Then you find a program that records without impacting your drawing performance -- only to find that the resulting video recorded at about 1 frame every 3 seconds. Then you tried FRAPS, then found out that 4 minutes of video resulted in a 3.2GB file. All of these are less than ideal.
A while back, I searched all over the net for a program that encoded video from my screen

If your character is picked/places, then I have the right to rename or make MINOR changes to designs/hair colors/etc. When I say minor, I mean I would only change one thing of/on the character IF anything at all. This is a contest for me to find/get some new OCs, so please keep that in mind!
1. Try and make them original.
2. Do not trace or copy someone elses work! No other peoples lineart allowed. (Bases may be used, but depends on quality)
3. You're allowed up to, four entries.
4. There will be Three winners! (Maybe four)
5. They MUST be living/alive.
6. Anything is allowed as long as it's in DA's rules.
7. Have fun!
8. Contest Shall End: February 22nd
If I don't have at least 10-15 entries, then I MAY cancel the contest! Fair Warning!

CONTEST~(CLOSED)CONTEST:CONTEST~(CLOSED)1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I need a male OC for my comic, The Gear Age. He will most likely be the partner with Fiamette, who has not yet been drawn. She has a crush on one of my friend's OCs, but since I'm not the type to force OC relationships on people, I'll make a new one~ This is a design contest.
What you need to know:
He's a monk. NOTE THAT THIS IS SIMPLY A TITLE. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ADHERE TO THE TRADITIONAL MONK IMAGE OF SHAVED HEADS/BAGGY ROBES.
Uses a staff.
Can communicate with animals.
I'd prefer if he was blind/blind in one eye. :3
26 years old.
The rest is up to you!
-An entire chibi adopt sheet. (9 chibis)
-Four drawings of OCs
-A two month long feature on my page
-A llama, if I haven't given you one
-A full size adopt, if you want one.
(had to shrink the point prize[a friend needed points for an emergency, so I gave her 100.] so I made all the other prizes bigger)
-Featured for two days
-One chibi adopt
