Should You Become a Professional Artist?Community WeekShould You Become a Professional Artist?8 months ago in Art Features More Like This
Do you enjoy art passionately and are considering doing it as your job, but have some worries such as;
Will I enjoy it as much as a job?
Will it be hard getting a job?
Will I become a starving artist?
If you're like me, you're asking yourself those questions and are letting them give you a hard time deciding whether or not to pursue art professionally. My health teacher told me, as we digressed from our topic of smoking, that to know whether or not you want to do a job, you have to hear what it's like from someone who's already doing it. That's why I decided to do an interview with professional artists on dA to give me, and hopefully many others, answers to these burning questions and an idea of what it's like to be a professional artist.
Okay, well let's get to it then
This is quite long so if you'd like to jump to a section, here are the questions I aske

How to beat procrastination (part 1)As I said on a previous submission, I'm planning to make some tutorials on the upcoming December. Before that, however, I feel like I can help on another subject, which comes before even starting your drawing: Procrastination. I mean, procrastination towards your own drawings. How to beat procrastination (part 1)9 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
If you're not familiar with this word:
pro-cras-ti-na-tion |prəˌkrastəˈnāSHən, prō-|
"the action of delaying or postponing something."
Why am I talking about this?
Well, a year ago I used to be a professional procrastinator. I've imposed the 365 Days of Doodles challenge to myself for this particular reason.
While procrastination is to some degree a natural phenomenon and can’t be completely eradicated, you can use the following strategies to get in the habit of getting drawings done.
Mind that these are not golden rules or such, just strategies that work fo
What is Originality to you?I was thinking the other day about creating original art. They say there is no such thing as originality, that every idea has been done, so I'm wondering what your definition of originality is? I probably look at 100-300 pieces of art every day on my DA, tumblr, artstation, draw crowd, conceptart, and I would say only about once a month I come across a piece of art that is something I've never seen before, or at least a subject matter that I've never seen presented in that way. What is Originality to you?1 month ago in Personal More Like This
To me, it's a combination of things. The most important element that catches my attention is when a picture tells a story, or makes me wonder if there's a story behind it. I don't mean comic books or anything, but sometimes I'll come across a piece of art and say wow, I'd really love to know more about what's happening here! One of my all time favorite artists is Yoshitaka Amano, because (and I know he does concept work for games) for stand alone images he always captivate me in a way that I want to know the sto

A New Wind Lifts Storytelling
First imagined as a bedtime tale for his son by Kenneth Grahame in 1908, The Wind in the Willows has remained in the top twenty children’s stories ever since. But things have been getting weird out in the Willows, as the new comic on deviantART, Weirding Willows, will attest to.
Badger, Mole, Ratty and Mr. Toad are back… but they’re joined by Alice, Frankenstein’s Monster, Mowgli, The White Rabbit, Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny as they defend the world from the Wicked Witch of the West, Doctor Moreau, the Mad Hatter, Mister Hyde and the Queen of Hearts (not to mention the flying nightmare monkeys from Wizard of Oz.)

Before anything, just allow me to tell just how much I have adored and cherished the love, kindness, support and friendship I have gained from all of you who cared to view what I'd drawn.
Doing these silly (And usually illogical/disturbing) comic-strips and images has literally been one of the highlights in my life, as cheesy and cliché as that may sound, I swear, it's absolutely true. Ever since way back when I started with my couple of watchers right up to this moment with over 19'000 watchers, breaking the 1'000'000 pageview milestone and having amassed over 10'000'000 hits, logging into this account and seeing many, many supportive remarks and friendly comments, watching the favourites rise steadfastly on each deviation, seeing others willing to try improve their own, or return, to drawing (Despite the fact that I still do not wish to be titled as a

It's almost school soon and would like to share some thoughts from a certain exchange with a fellow artist friend!
Now I saw that this friend of mine nabbed an internship at Disney so I asked her what would it take to get an internship there.
So she told me that (while it's somewhat a sad truth) most artists that get in the industry (which can be any industry) get these positions through the connections they have made in and out of school. Which can make sense since if a person knows your work is good, and you are pleasant to work with, it is easy to get a good recommendation from that guy!
She then told me to not be afraid to email/message your idols especially with your portfolio as long as you are friendly and polite!
I am writing this right now to tell you to not be afraid to make connections. And it doesn't have to be in the industry you plan on joining! Make friends with future doctors and lawyers! While it is indeed common knowledge for some, I real
On misunderstandings about cosplayThis is a topic I've been meaning to talk about for quite a while now. I finally got the motivation to when Sarah sorairo-days emailed me to share my thoughts on what cosplay means to me, and what I feel it really means to be a cosplayer despite all the misconceptions about the hobby. It's for this article on Random Nerds, in which Sarah shares her side of it as well.On misunderstandings about cosplay3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Over the years, I've witnessed how cosplayers are constantly looked down upon, which makes people apprehensive towards it. It's such a shame because it's a wonderful and rewarding hobby which brings people together. And in general, I am firmly against making anyone feel bad about doing something they want to do.
I am aware that the concept of cosplay might be too much for some individuals, but our intention definitely isn't to get all up in everyone's faces and say everyone should cosplay or whatever. We just want to promote a

In this post, I'll get into how I did each one!
Intro, and some bad old pictures
For those of you who have the patience to read for some extra info!
When I started cosplaying, I didn't think makeup was such a major part of it. I was so hesitant to even put eyeliner because I'd think, "This character is a guy, I shouldn't look like I'm wearing makeup!" And I guess I was silly enough to think I looked enough like the characters I chose without doing anything to my face?
I can't find more pictures of my really old cosplays (which is just as well, hahah) from the time I didn't want to use makeup apart from these:
I cosplayed as Haku from Naruto. I don't remember wearing any makeup for this. It doesn't show too well on these pictures but I saw some others where the natural redness of my lips made it look like I was wearing lipstick even if I wasn't. I felt it made me look more feminine than I should. Haku is still a guy after al
For those of you who say:"I can't do great works of art because all I have is MS Paint"For those of you who say:2 years ago in Personal More Like This
It's NOT the program, it's the artist using the program.
EDIT: I should probably mention this was 50+ hours or work for this. So don't be discouraged and think this person actually just sat down and did this in like 5 minutes, haha! And yes, it IS the newer version of MS Paint (Windows 7 and higher maybe? I don't know if Windows 8 has MS Paint or not).
Fast lane to becoming a better artist.I often get this very question: How did you get this good this fast?Fast lane to becoming a better artist.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Now as I consider myself not being as good as people tell me, even struggling quite often with being an artist in general.
I do know how to get better and how to reach it fast. I'm still growing as I go and it's the main thing that keeps me going.
You need to get into the right mindset and the rest will follow. With the rest I mean:
3. Positive energy.
4. The NEED to draw.
Seeing growth in your work gives you the courage to work harder. You know that feeling when you're just about done with an image
and feel like this image is better than your last one, that great feeling. Use it!
Do studies! Lots of them!! Make film shot studies, live object studies, master-painting studies. They will teach you a lot about composition, lighting, colors, shapes storytelling etc.
You will hardly notice that you are learning thing
CMYK or RGB for your Digital Painting?Generally, if I were to print my digital paintings, I set my canvas at CMYK from the start. There were times I started at RGB and converted to CMYK when going for printing. Seldom do the colors differ a lot. I was recommended to bump up the brightness by 20% to compensate when printing as prints are usually darker. Most of the time I print at a local print shop at the nearby shopping mall. The machine is a Xerox laser printer; desktop printing. Using CMYK. The print results of my artwork come out very much like what I see on my computer screen. Even for one of my old college projects, I used large pixel dimensions and high resolution of movie posters off the internet, put them in on the CMYK canvas in Photoshop, I was surprised the colors came out looking almost identical with on screen. If there were differences, it was very negligible, unless you went looking for it on purpose.CMYK or RGB for your Digital Painting?3 years ago in Personal More Like This
But a contributor on Fantasy Artist magazine, April Madden recommends that you work in RGB first. Because it

Notes on Character Design
I received the question pictured below at my tumblr blog. In case it's useful to anyone here, I decided to go ahead and use this otherwise dormant journal to share the article I put together in response.
Character design and drawing are tome-sized topics and even if I had all the answers (I don't - I have a lot to learn), I'm not sure I could communicate them effectively. Here are some thoughts an ideas that might help, though.
First, some general things...
Let some of that anxiety go. This isn't a hard science. There's no wrong way,

Mindful Meditation of Daily Drawing
Foreword by techgnotic
Gabriel Picolo is a graphic design student in Brazil who has provided at least two people—me and himself—a most compelling reason for getting out of bed every morning in 2014. He calls it the 365 Days of Doodles Project, for which he creates, each day, one of his wildly imaginative pencil sketch and ink drawings (quite a bit more elevated than a “doodle”—more like a free-flowing meditation).
