Awaji’s coast was consumed with wind. The black pines lining the beach creaked and swayed with the winter gusts. One pair of footprints led away from the dock, leaving a trail in the sand. Chiyo hadn’t wasted a moment returning to the form of a fox, nor had she waited long to perch on the tengu’s shoulders. Shichi was glad to be out of the boat. Whether it was his inexperience with the sea, or perhaps the ferryman’s poor navigation, his stomach was still turning from the waves. The wind whipped his feathers, sending a few flying loose behind him.
They trekked along the shore, following its curve north past rocky slopes and crooked pines. White and yellow narcissus peppered the landscape. The flowers began to grow in number, until finally they passed the foot of a mountain, its surface covered with thousands of blossoms. They bowed obediently to the wind, bobbing their petals towards the sea. For a moment, Shichi watched them ripple, grateful for a moment of sile

This is a short, sweet meme in which I will ask you (your character/s) how your character (yourself/ves) reacts to various situations or just little details about your (their) general lives. For the sake of not parenthesizing every other question, the you is implied from the author or the characters perspective and it doesnt matter how you do it. Keepin it loose.
First, what is your name and all the nicknames attached to that?
My name's Seok Jin-Eun. I've always just been called "Jin" -- the "Eun" is a generational suffix, so all of my siblings and I have it in common.
How old are you?
I'm 26. 27 is only a few months away... for some reason, that's very intimidating.
How happy are you with yourself?
Moderately? That's a complicated question. On one hand, most of my life seems to be going reasonably well; the ranch is really starting to get up to speed, and I'm happy working on it. I've made quite a few goo
HPM: Seok Jin-EunSeok Jin-Eun awoke to the shrill call of his alarm clock and the first light of dawn breaking through his curtains. Morning had come again; how did it always manage to surprise him? A vigorous scrubbing later, Jin glanced into the mirror, pleased by what he saw. It seemed like life on the ranch was agreeing with him; his charcoal-grey skin was smooth and clean, giving his sharp features a look of health they often hadn't managed at home, and despite his fatigue, his orange eyes were bright and open wide. Jin smiled to himself and moved to his wardrobe, slipping out of his pajamas and into his clothes for the day: a simple pair of blue jeans and a plaid flannel shirt, the back modified for his wings. As he methodically fastened the back closures of the shirt, he reflected that those wings still felt strange, even
Nine Facts: Crispin AlexanderNine Facts: Crispin Alexander3 years ago in Sketches More Like This
1. Crispin's astrological sign is Scorpio. Sort of.
All of the incarnations that an Afterrealm spirit lives through are always born under the same sign (well, the same approximate time frame, anyway), so all of his previous human lives have had birthdates sometime from late October through early November.
The residents of the Afterrealm have their own system that's more accurate to this phenomenon and doesn't have a bunch of ridiculous symbols and simpering about compatibility between signs, but since the Mortal Realm's western zodiac is close enough and far more familiar, they often just refer to it for convenience's sake.
2. Everyone's gotta have a hobby.
Things he does for fun include playing fiddle (mostly Celtic reels, because he likes the sound) and reading; mortal author Raymond Chandler shows up rather prominently in his apartment bookshelf. He's also way better at dancing than most people know, since it's not an ability he displays very much in public.

The human’s house was modest. Rather than the tile Shichi had seen on larger homes, the dwelling had a roof of thatched straw. There were farming tools and barrels against the outer walls, making his trade quite clear to anyone who might visit. The surrounding land was sectioned into several fields, all empty for the season. There was only cold, gray soil. Fog continued to hang over the landscape, causing the far end of the fields to disappear into a white haze. The farmer slid open the door, gesturing for Shichi and Chiyo to follow.
An embrace of heat welcomed them as they stepped inside. There was a hearth set into a raised platform, its flames sending a trail of smoke up towards a vent. The other half of the house was level with the ground, made only of tidy, flattened earth. There were jugs and casks lined against the wall, accompanied by cooking supplies and a clay oven.
The man said no more to his guests, turning his attention towards the hearth. It was then that Shichi not

Shichi awoke to the sound of songbirds. He waited before opening his eyes, trying to think through the terrible pounding in his head. The smell of poppy sap still lingered in his nostrils, reminding him of what had happened the previous night. Normally, a few drops were enough to ease an adult into a quick sleep. It was often consumed in a tea, as inhaling the vapor itself was considered too harsh and astringent. Shichi could recall the human crushing the entire pod in his fist, visualizing the white sap as it gushed between his fingers. At that dosage, he was lucky to have awakened at all.
Gradually, his eyes dared to open. It was morning. Faint gray light filtered in through the paper doors of the room. A room -- he was in a room.
He pushed himself up onto his elbows, taking in his surroundings, trying to piece together where he was. The interior was fairly small, yet ornate. Painted scrolls hung on the walls and the cabinets were made of a dark, richly colored wood. His staff was in

For the first time in his life, Shichi was utterly alone. He had no home, no direction to face, and no one to ask for guidance. Two of these problems were inescapable, but one could be dissolved with a simple decision. He would have to choose his path.
Having lived in a secluded temple for decades, he knew little of the surrounding land and its affairs. His concerns had been limited to yellowed books and changing seasons, never once visiting a larger city, never even considering the vast stretches of land that expanded beyond the horizon. The only thing he knew was that he must find others to help.
Shichi leaned back onto the tree he had climbed, keeping himself steady on the high bough. From here, he could see miles of the mountain range, its peaks shrouded in low clouds. Tengu were naturally drawn to mountains. Their great heights were as close as they could get to the skies they had once called home. Mountains were often isolated, offering protection from the troubles of humanity. H

The next morning came quietly. The snow had turned to rain, falling in light droplets over the forest floor. It was the first time in many years that Shichi had not risen to the sound of a bell. Any hopes that the previous day had been a dream were dashed as he felt the fresh stitches running up the length of his body. Sagiri had not slept, having spent the night tending to her apprentice’s wounds and keeping watch on their surroundings. Without a word, she led him back down to the ground and gestured for him to follow.
Shichi didn’t know what to say as he walked behind her through the snow. They had both lost their home and companions, barely making it through alive, all because of his actions — because of his lies. She had warned him repeatedly of what might happen. She had told him that this, exactly this, would come — that everything they knew might be destroyed. Even so, he had continued to think only of himself. He knew, as he followed her deep footprints,

There was only one place Shichi could think of going. He had waited months for this moment, pushing down the longing and the ache as he had focused on training. He had missed Kana terribly, wondering if she was safe, hoping that she was happy. He wasn’t certain if she would be treated as a victim or a traitor, or whether her husband and family would be accepting of her actions. He’d pondered if and how she had changed in the last year; had she cut her hair -- had she learned anything new?
Many nights had been filled with dreams of her voice, imagining that he had seen her in the clearing, or that he was back in the old storehouse by her side. The thought of her laughter, the memory of her fingers brushing his face -- each of these made his heart race. His pace changed; rather than a walk away from his mentor, it became a run towards the one he loved.
What had previously been a three day journey now took half the time. The air was cool, dancing with the scent of wet leaves a

“You called for me, Master?” Sagiri asked, sitting on folded knees across from the elder tengu. It was a warm afternoon — the rainy season had just ended, leaving the air thick with humidity.
“Yes,” Shima replied with a nod. “I have a task for you.”
Sagiri straightened in anticipation. Though she had been training with Shima for decades, she still leapt at any chance to prove herself. She wondered if she might once again be able to show her skills in battle, or perhaps to uphold her medical abilities with a new patient. It had been years since the attack at the western temple and there was only so much one could display in a sparring match.
“There are two new children today,” the older woman continued. “I’d like you to tend to them until they’re settled in.”
Sagiri resisted the urge to slump. Her expression remained focused, masking her inner disappointment.
“But Master, I’m no good with children,

Sagiri didn’t need to ask her student if he had cut ties with the human -- his behavior made the choice very clear. His performance in nearly all of his duties excelled. No longer distracted by long outings and daydreams, Shichi carried out his tasks with systematic precision. He devoted himself entirely to his work, filling every waking hour with study and labor. Even after his month of compulsory silence had ended, he continued to avoid interactions that weren’t deemed necessary. His mentor could have sworn that his eyes, which once drew over his surroundings with boundless curiosity, had gone unnaturally still.
The hollow sound of an axe blade on a dry stump echoed over the edge of the mountain. Winter was edging its way into the forest, leaving a bite in the air between barren trees. Though the tengu’s breath rose in clear puffs, the first frost had not yet come, and so his firewood duties continued. Two halves of a thick tree limb split with one swing, sending th

The rain continued to pour as the two survivors collected the bodies of the fallen. Lacking the resources to perform proper a funeral, they chose to cremate the monks together. The human men had been bound with scraps of cloth and secured to a thick tree, leaving the tengu enough time to go through with their sober task. Teacher and student stood side by side, watching the fire as they offered their final prayers.
It wasn’t the first funeral Shichi had attended. In the decades he’d lived at the temple, he had seen young tengu arrive as the old passed away. He had grown from a boy to an adult and had watched his peers rise and fall. Many of the others were much younger than he — Shichi had never wanted to outlive them. He couldn’t help but think, as he watched the flames consume their remains, that this wasn’t how it was supposed to end.
Shichi and Sagiri avoided speaking as they gathered what supplies they could find. Little had escaped the fire. A sealed

Ginn stumbled against a tree trunk, cold air stinging his throat. Rasping filled his ears, blood pounding and deep, panicked breaths. He pushed himself, and he kept running, and kept clutching his hand.
The sound of crushing leaves and snapping branches persisted at his heels, following his every movement; he would duck through a bushel, scraped by twigs and thistles, and skitter down a small slope of muddy leaf, stumbling as quietly as he could manage, but the sound that followed him seemed to know his every movement. He was being tracked.
It couldn't have been at a worse time.
Grunting and clawing at his glove, Ginn bounded over a felled tree- slipped- rolled to the forest floor, at the feet of a massive blackbriar.
