On pricing your artwork and creating a career...I am going to be speaking at an "Entrepreneurship In The Arts" program later today, and I've been organizing my thoughts. One subject that is certain to come up; "how do you arrive at a fair price for your original artwork?" I have some definite ideas regarding that question. On pricing your artwork and creating a career...3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I was always told that the accepted model for artists and artisans, when it comes to pricing, was double your costs for materials, figure out an hourly price (double that for your retail price if you plan to have wholesale/retail differentials), add it up and there's your item price. I think this model is pure bullshit.
I was also told "charge what the market will bear!" Again, vague bullshit. What if you live in a depressed area? What if you live in a third world country? What if you're at some artist's ally at a little convention and there is a kid sitting next to you selling her character sketches for $5 each?
Here is what I think. There are so many variables when it comes to pricing original art. Yo
10 year anniversary contest! Paper making! On July 14, 2014, it will have been 10 years ago that I signed up to be a member here on deviantART. To celebrate, I decided to hold a contest.10 year anniversary contest! Paper making!2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
The theme of the contest is: Home made paper.
The winner of this contest will receive a book of choice from my shop or request one to be specially made for them.
The deadline: July 14, 2014, 23.59 CEST.
As some of you may know, I've started to experiment with making paper. It's a versatile craft that can be very cheap and fun. Paper can be made from all kinds of plants, fruits and vegetables. It can also be made with recyclables. One could even use printing paper or newspapers as basis for the new paper. Designs can be added to the paper by adding items to the wet pulp, adding dye or tissues, creating patterns with objects such as rope, netting, wire, fabrics, etc. One could even create paper paintings using different colors of pulp. The finished papers can be made into stationary; books, envelopes. Th
Secrets On How ToAlright I guess I'm gonna make another rant, and this one's been bugging me for the longest time. And I'm going to be as BLUNT as I will be and not sugar coat anything I'm about to say.Secrets On How To3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Often do I hear things like:
"what custom brushes do you use"
"how do you achieve this blur/ focus effect"
"how did you get the colors to go this way and that"
"what technique or computer program did you use"
What I rarely get asked for is:
"What did you study to be more efficient at drawing."
"What is an efficient way to study how to render certain types of materials"
"How do you practice proper lighting when painting?"
Guys I'm just gonna say it now, there's no shortcut to art. I work primarily in digital mediums now but I do have a solid foundation in traditional mediums. I didn't simply go out and buy a $400 tablet and instantly got to where I am today. I use custom brushes and special effects in my pieces, but they only take up less than 3% of the overall work. There's sti

Instagram Can Sell Your Photos Without Paying YouEDIT 19/12/12: Instagram has responded.Instagram Can Sell Your Photos Without Paying You3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Though the language they use seems to want to overly passify rather than address issues. "Your photos are your photos and we respect that." is a nice sentiment but does not necessarily exclude "we have the right to license and use your stuff even though you own the content" By signing up to instagram you are giving them permission to do this even though you do technically own the content you are submitting.
I'm not going to flail my arms about doom, but I will say, artists be aware. Not just about this, but about any contracts you sign. There is some real sketchy language in the fine print here that needs to be clarified or changed as of right now. More than just an "everything's fine, don't worry" letter. Company lawyers have a tendency to try to take the largest chunk of whatever they can, and only back off when their actions are made public and they ar

*Liquin- Used to use mineral spirits, and linseed oil but I found how much linseed oil tends to turn all my colours yellow. Mineral spirits became too watered down many people asked if I painted with watercolours. Liquin and a bit of poppy seed oil makes a perfect mixture. (Almond oil is what I want to try in future)
*Brushes- Round Synthetic mongoose. Flat square brushes was my fav back in the time but no longer.
*Pallet- I buy a painting frame with glass for $8 then I put a white paper under the glass and use that to mix my paints. I used to own a little fridge where I would store my pallet over night (it never dries but your fridge will smell like oil)
*Reference photos- I tape an ipad to my painting and I can zoom in, play music, photoshop and skype while I paint. Best invention ever !
*Paints- I have upgraded to higher more expensive paints thanks to my gift cards (think of it as an

"Take what you like, young man," said the sweet little old lady who stood by my side, garage door clicker in hand. She was a neighbor and had invited me to her home in our sleepy suburban neighborhood because she had, in her words, "a few art-supplies to give away,"
So here I stood, in her garage, which was filled with what appeared to be literally thousands of paintings, stacked tightly in bundles from floor to ceiling.
"These were my husband's paintings", she explained." Maybe you could paint over them and re-use them."
"What? Paint over them?" I asked in horror. "What are you saying? Don't you want your husband's paintings?" The sweet old lady shrugged and shook her head, in a sad, quiet way. "What can I do with these?" She responded. What you don't take today, the trash peopl

Louie Schwartzberg has made it his life’s mission to use his cinematic artistry to raise the alarm for public awareness of the dire situation we are facing in the possible collapse of our taken-for-granted natural resources. The “colony collapse disorder” currently decimating our honeybees was the prompt for Louie’s new movie, Wings of Life, which at it's essence, is a love story that feeds the earth.

I'm involved in no less than three suits right now, and it's breaking me financially. Legalities prevent me from saying who they are against...but they stalk my blog and mine my sites for designs on a daily basis, so I bet they're reading this right now. All I have to say to these people is this; it's NOT cool to steal someone's designs and call them your own. That "three differences added and it's MINE" defense only works for fashion design, not art, so get that idea out of your head. Merimask is a trademark, and I've been busily linking all my copyrights to my trademark, and all registered under the category of "art", not "fashion". Trademarked elements are always protected. #InktoberHell yes, #inktober is starting!#Inktober4 months ago in Art Features More Like This
For those that do not know what inktober is, it's a challenge that's been going around for a few years now. It's about making daily/regular drawing with ink.
Think about regular ink, fineliners, markers, but I've even seen digital ink being done (might be an idea for those that don't have traditional ink and/or and are broke as hell).
For the complete story, I'd recommend you to check out this website.
I was originally planning to go for the full 31 days, but then my health messed up again :')
So I'm now trying to do a regular schedule with at least 3 a week (the weekends) which is for me challenging enough considering crappy health, loads of hospital appointment, and obvious social obligations (seriously? Why is everybody's birthday in October? WHYYYY???)
But... I'm not gonna make a journal without at least providing s

- Throat is itchy as FUCK. Another FtM online said he experienced the same thing and said it was the vocal chords lengthening. My voice has gotten a tiny bit lower if I relax it but not much yet.
- Joints aren't stiff. That's nice.
- I've always had a problem with low blood pressure. Any kind of physical exertion was met with feeling like my body feeling like it's encased in tar. Climb a staircase? You have exactly 5 seconds before you go to old-lady speed. No matter what I did there was no going faster. This also mean going to a gym 4 times a week for two years and not gaining an ounce of muscle.
On Friday I sprinted to catch a bus, caught it, and wasn't winded.

How tentaculas are madePeople keep asking about Love and Tentacles, but I'm sorry to say that comic is as good as dead. I might draw a picture once in a while because Frida can be fun to draw, but I don't even think about LaT most of the time, unlike my other comics which enter my head daily. How tentaculas are made3 years ago in Personal More Like This
But people are apparently dying to know if Tom and Frida ever had kids, and if it could even be done. So I'll give you and explanation on that.
Tentaculas have reproductive tentacles around their waist (the thin pink ones that gets thick when they get aroused). Males and females rub them against each other and release semen and eggs into water (in these modern times its usually a bathtub unless they're hippies). They are left to float around until the fertilized eggs hatch and the tiny young eats the un-fertilized eggs. Then they move on to swallowing each other, until only one is left. Sounds unpleasant, but that is why tentaculas in general are very healthy and handicaps are almost unheard of unless they get inj

Woman in Sci-FiThere's news ... kind of.Woman in Sci-Fi3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've been hired by an actual company to do actual art. With a contract and everything. It's not permanent, but there is legal paperwork ... so that has to mean something. One of these legal papers means none of the finished art, none of the sketches, and none of the any part of it will be here. But that's pretty standard.
I'm going to let myself be excited about this. I get to work with the husband, which I always love, and the guy I'm working for is great. Not only does he have a ton of interesting concepts and thoughts running about in his head, but he has this idea that I really *really* like.
He doesn't want objectified, unrealistic women with exaggerated anatomy and bikini-armor -which is paradise to my artistic sensibilities. Not just that, but he was able to bring up the topic, without blinking and without apology, in front of a woman. It actually took a while for that bit of conversation to sink in.
I never, in my lifetime, thought I'd hear something l

The daily life of a Wolfaboo. Please read before reading the rest of the text below:The daily life of a Wolfaboo.4 years ago in Personal More Like This
After seeing the amount of wolfaboos on places such as deviantART, YouTube, Facebook etc, I thought it would be interesting to try and reconstruct the life of the average wolfaboo and get an insight to just how arrogant and pathetic these uneducated people are. Another thing to point out is that the text below is written in decent-enough English, and that a wolfaboo would rarely, if ever, type/ write like that, just so you know.
The daily life of a Wolfaboo...
Saturday morning. I woke up and saw it was 11:00am, but I remembered that having the wolf as my inner animal meant I had to stay up late last night and howl at the moon when my mother had gone out. I growled and stretched like a wolf would, because after all, I am a wolf, right? I looked at all my wolf books and stories all over my messy bedroom. I saw my Wolf's Rain DVDs, and I sighed with happiness. It was all true. Wolves really can leap at very high altitude, have a pa

I believe that Minecraft is the future of massive multiplayer games, and I'm surprised that none of the big developers/publishers have cottoned onto it yet.
They look at Minecraft and think its success is down to its business model, or to its blocky, retro charm.
It's down to the fact that you get out of it what you put into it.
With a MMORPG, there are pre-scripted quests. With Minecraft, you set the quests yourself or others.
User created content is the key. All you have to do is provide the players with the tools to build.
There are two types of gamer: wall builders and wall breakers.
Wall builders are the ones that spend an age in an RTS game getting their base just right. They play SimCity and act as Dungeon Master during an RPG.
Wall breakers are the type to follow the mission brief. They get set a quest and they follow it. They're the Call of Duty crowd and they're never more happy than when
