Please Pants Responsibly (Paper Notebooks FTW)Please Pants Responsibly (Paper Notebooks FTW)1 year ago in Personal More Like This
There are two ways to write a novel. Plotting (you make an outline, a plan, a roadmap if you will, and then you sit down and write it) and pantsing (you write "by the seat of your pants, throwing caution to the wind). So when I get asked if I'm a plotter or a pantser, I'm all like er, uh, hold on, let me? Pantser? I think? But I kind of, um, do planny things?
And it gets kind of awkward because in these inarticulate moments I have managed to confuse everyone including myself. And probably spilled a drink.
In recent discussions, however, I've had a bit of a revelation, silly as it is. I've realized that I -- like many writers -- am a plotter/pantser hybrid. And perhaps what I'm doing is something we could call Pantsing Responsibly. And, maybe, just maybe, I could share some of my responsible pantsing tips with other writers. Starting with paper notebooks.
Anyone can find a notebook. If there isn't alread

DO NOT pressure an artist, writer, cosplayer, Rper, ect. to do something they are uncomfortable with. Just don't. Here's a list of reasons why:
1. It makes them want to stop
2. It makes them angry
3. It makes them want to ignore you
4. It doesn't make them like you
5. They get frustrated
6. They get depressed
7. You look like an asshole
Do I need to go on?
I'll give you a personal account.
I'm a fanfic writer as some of you may know. Recently I had someone try and pressure me into taking my last project in a direction I didn't want to go. I tried to explain that I plan my stories out in a pretty detailed way to begin with, and knew exactly how my story was going to progress, but they insisted. I felt terrible. I felt like I wasn't good enough, like what I had to give wasn't enough for this person. In fact, I
On pricing your artwork and creating a career...I am going to be speaking at an "Entrepreneurship In The Arts" program later today, and I've been organizing my thoughts. One subject that is certain to come up; "how do you arrive at a fair price for your original artwork?" I have some definite ideas regarding that question. On pricing your artwork and creating a career...1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I was always told that the accepted model for artists and artisans, when it comes to pricing, was double your costs for materials, figure out an hourly price (double that for your retail price if you plan to have wholesale/retail differentials), add it up and there's your item price. I think this model is pure bullshit.
I was also told "charge what the market will bear!" Again, vague bullshit. What if you live in a depressed area? What if you live in a third world country? What if you're at some artist's ally at a little convention and there is a kid sitting next to you selling her character sketches for $5 each?
Here is what I think. There are so many variables when it comes to pricing original art. Yo
To ALL the lemon haters...(One of my stupid rants, please don't hate me, this has just been on my mind.)To ALL the lemon haters...2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Listen guys, I have a small rant I feel obligated to say.
To ALL those people who reported art and helped delete Lemontalia, here's a few things I wanna say.
I understand that writing Lemons may be against the rules in a way on dA. But here's the thing, it is NOT your responsibility to try a deprive a fandom of a form of happiness and joy in writing.
I've seen a whole lot worst "forms of art" on dA that DON'T EVEN HAVE A WARNING. OKAY.
Some of us actually go OUT OF OUR WAY, too legitimately click "Yes (warning)" where is says, "Does this have mature content."
And you know, if you're not even a part of the fandom excusing an occasional mislabeling of tags.
HOW THE HELL ARE YOU EVEN FINDING LEMONS? HOW ARE YOU SOMEHOW SEEING THEM?
Is it that you're trying to study for a history project?
WELL DERP-A-DERP, MOST FANFICS SAY "READER x ___(country name)__"
And if you're ignorant enough to believe this is SOMEHOW RE

Sad topic is sad. But this has gone too far.
I tend not to write public-execution-type journals for both me and the person's sake, but unfortunately, I have to bring this issue to public due to various reasons which i'll be explaining them in a bit. But before I do, I ask people who are reading this to promise one thing: don't take this as a token to write nasty comments or try to confront this deviant - there is absolutely no point for any of you to go low, or spend time for useless effort. And if you're totally against with these type of journals, just don't read it alright... I don't need people trying to lecture me later what i've done is wrong/mean, it's none of my business, etc. I've done what I thought it needs to be done.
Well then, now that the warning is set, let's move on to the point what this person has done and my reasoning why I had to go public.
So it all started few days a
Tips to improve our artwork♣ Hard working - constantly practice even when we don't want to draw.Tips to improve our artwork2 years ago in Personal More Like This
♣ Learning from others artists - no matter who is it, from beginner to master, we can always learn something from them.
♣ Learning from audience - carefully consider comments from other people, their opinions are valuable.
♣ Accept our own weak points - though it is so hurtful, look for them - try improving them instead.
♣ Always be a beginner - there are many things beyond than we have ever realized. Let's open our mind and learn new stuff.
♣ Don't waste your time on choosing tools - choose the appropriate materials - what we like the most is the perfect one.
♣ Only taking a break but don't give up - there are numerous obstacles that await for us in this path - confront and fight them!
♣ Basics are the most important part- then we can adapt to anything we want.
♣ Believe in ourselves - self-esteem needs to be added to ingredient in our work.

Cultivating Your Drawing SkillsI believe drawing skills are never innate: when someone is a natural, what they really have are remarkable observational skills and the ability to apply them in their case, through drawing (it could just as well have been espionage ). Drawing skills can be cultivated by anyone able to use their minds and hands. There are basically only two approaches to do this: theory (+practice) and observation (+studies).Cultivating Your Drawing Skills7 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Theory is a structured, organised approach, learning from someone more experienced who's laid it all out for us in a course, book or tutorial.
Observation is an organic, unpredictable approach, learning directly from the real world around us and gradually deriving principles from it.
Alone, they are both incomplete; trying to work with only one of them would be like trying to walk with one foot. Studying lays down a solid foundation, which remains abstract and limited until observation brings it to life with details and real-life application

Today I learned that asking someone to please stop complaining and whining on my page is the same as hate mail. xD Kids making new meanings for stuff never gets old. And apparently it gives you a low maturity level aswell. D8 what am I missing here?
Remember people dont tell others how to behave, it makes you immature and a hater. I knew I shouldnt trust my parents and teatchers, they are so immature and old compared to me so they cant go tell people how to behave.

How I workI've gotten questions about painting demos on how I work, but I don't have any of those yet. I definitely want to try that out though. While I can't show you right now, I can tell you about it.How I work1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Creating an illustration is fun. But it's also a lot of work if you want to make it any good. Most people don't realize how much work it really is. How much thinking and preparation is needed. It's really problem solving. You're solving problem after problem, trying to make things work. Thankfully it's a fun problem to solve and you can explore as you learn new things.
Also, I'm not talking about sketching, or doodling, or speed painting. I'm talking about a story-driven illustration.
This check list is by no means definitive, especially when it comes to the design elements like characters and location design. In fact, it's more of a starting point. These are useful guidelines, reminders.
This is all common knowledge among illustrators. You learn this stuff in art school. You also learn the foun
Shanghai NOEspecially for beginners it can be really hard to say "No". Sometimes you get a job offer with the tiny problem of microscopic payment (if any payment at all) or you are already IN a project and get tons of change requests and end up with an hourly rate that makes you weep. And mostly not in enjoyment.Shanghai NO10 months ago in Personal More Like This
Or you get the puppy-eye look for "a favour" and in the end you end up doing things you didn't really want and spending weeks of your free time on it. And it leaves a sour aftertaste because you think "Dang, why didn't I...?"
Yes... why haven't you?
I have to admit the "we need ten million changes" problem is still a problem I face mostly on a daily base. It's okay if you get payed for it. Gods, I'll do a million changes if it gets payed and if these changes are reasonable. :iconengelszorn: and I experienced such a "we need changes" problem and in the end it was a mixture of fine negotiation, making a lot of compromises and doing (bearable) changes. But within boundaries. Because you rea
artzI think that anger from visual artists towards other artists never has anything to do with anatomy, style, age, content, or personality. These are just icing on the cake. At the core, I think there two kinds of practicing artists:artz1 year ago in Personal More Like This
- People who believe that you need to be qualified (by an abstract or specific entity, person, or group) in order to make a living or name for yourself. Anyone who is doing these things without qualification is a cheater who will fail ultimately.
- People who believe qualification is subjective, or even irrelevant, and you might as well shoot for the name or living while you progress your skills anyway. Anyone who isn't trying to make their mark while practicing anyway is wasting their time.
I think that a recognizable name and income are the "holy grail" achievements for artists… though obviously there are many tiers and kinds of achievements, some big and some small! I suppose it's a little natural for artists to be angry, envious, or upset whe

I know it's not February yet...but I just couldn't wait.
Anyway, February is a shorter month, so we should show it some love, yeah? Yeah!
So! Beginning with February, I will be restarting my monthly mini challenge/contests. I used to have these many years ago, or something similar, but then I got swallowed by the abyss of college and, well... But regardless, I'll be holding these for as long as possible, so this is what happens:
Each month I will have a number of stock photos for you to play with. Each prior month, I'll hold a poll so you can all have at least one photo chosen by you guys. With these given stock photos you can use one of them, a few, all, and combine them however you wish. And you can make however many entry pieces you'd like and in any medium --digital, traditional, even literature (curious so see how that would happen...)-- as long as I can tell it's clearly based off the photos you were
