Art ElvesI mentioned I was in Mammoth over the holidays, which, besides an annoying sickness for the first few days, was so much fun I don't even know where to start. But I'll get into that in another Journal.
I wanted to share with you a note I found on my desk at hq when I returned. Yanira works here at the office once or twice a week and she had her nephews in with her during the break.
We have a ton of these deviantART coasters laying around HQ so they must have found them. We originally made them for originaldrinkanddraw and I'm so glad they found them! I'm going to have to get more just in case the elves come again!
Look what they left for me!
How cool are these?! Um, please ignore the devious slogan on there... Hopefully the artistic elves knew we were talking about delicious, healthy milk!

Complaint Challenge Contest!Complaint Challenge Contest!2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
We got our complaints out in December 2012. Now, 2013 is about doing something productive with them. I am not going to sit and grumble about my pet peeves. Neither should you!
Anyone who knows me should have been suspicious from the start of Phase 1 because complaining is one of my own complaints. (And you saw this trick last year!) That's right. I complain about people complaining. Silly, yes? Well I decided to do something about it with this challenge.
I hope everyone enjoyed sharing their gripes in Phase 1 because it is time for Phase 2! And Phase 2 is open to everyone, even if you didn't participate in Phase 1, or decided to change what complaint you'd like to address!
Complaint Challenge – Phase 2
The challenge in a nutshell: Pick one of your dA complaints and do something proactive about it. Work toward a solution or improvement in a positive way.

This is another long one, and I apologize but I need to speak my mind. This journal is in response to the "righteously indignant" users making a fuss about me "selling" fanart of copyrighted characters in my recent Adventure Time post. To the person who signed up today just to write a nasty comment on my new Society6 page. To the person who flagged my recent Adventure Time illustration on DA and then proceeded to send me an e-mail about doing it (probably the same person). To the people creating multiple accounts to try and dissuade users from spending their money how they see fit. And to a long list of people who follow everything I do post just to make sure that their negative voice and attitude are the first voices anyone ever sees on all of my work.
It's All A Scam
I'm in an unenviable position. Popular enough to be well known, not popular enough to be making oodles of cash off my stuff. Part of that is my own fault for not really promoting and selling myself,

deviantART on our Lucky 13As you get older, you may begin to see birthdays as a distinctive point in time. A time for reflection on past successes, past roadblocks, past lessons. I also see it as an opportunity to look forward, set goals, aim ridiculously high. I'm sure everyone's heard people joke about disliking getting older and lamenting another year passing, but not me. Not yet, at least. The wisdom and hard lessons I've had to learn over the years helps me map out my immediate future. Paul had always been short with words; this time would be no different.
"I know everything now."
Maya watched as he floated upwards through the hole in the ceiling.
There was no time to tell her what he had seen. What it was like to die while psychically connected to another being and how, in that moment, the mind-soul rides that tether like a roller coaster searching for the end of the track. That he rode that tether through the mind of Tal'shen and then into its mother, witnessing their lives, truths and stories.
No time to explain that he knew her race, perhaps better than her. That for millennia these stained glass people worshiped science as humans worshiped gods, and evolved a culture of unraveling the complex mysteries of the mathematical universe. They were a race that evolved exponentially because each was dedicated to self-improvement. He saw that, over time, there was a great shift - physical and mental - and an age came to pass when their mi
Preparing for NaNoWriMo Part 2In my last journal, we discussed the best ways to prepare for NaNo and included a couple tips on how to make that writing go a little faster and smoother. Well, now it's time to discuss how to NOT fail at NaNoWriMo. Because just as there are some really grand ideas on how to prepare yourself and keep yourself on task during the month, there are also going to be those times of self doubt and using excuses to not write. For NaNo, any of those excuses are completely unacceptable [well, except for life threatening excuses - those are allowed].Preparing for NaNoWriMo Part 22 years ago in Literature Features More Like This
So once again, I reached out to the Lit Community to find out exactly why other deviants failed at NaNo, or what they found to NOT work for them and compiled it all together in a pretty little list like last time.

Improved DMCA Reporting SystemImproved DMCA Reporting System2 years ago in DeviantART Announcements More Like This
Hello, deviants! In an effort to keep the community informed and to provide the best possible experience for our members, we wanted to inform you of changes to our reporting system.
DeviantART is dedicated to protecting our artists, and in an effort to be able to more quickly handle complaints by deviants who have had their rights infringed on, we have changed the way we receive complaints from the artist or the copyright holder.
In the past, we took reports by the copyright holder in two different ways: An informal report via the Report Violation tool and a formal complaint via contacting the Help Desk. While both of these methods were effective, they presented many setbacks.
The informal report did not gather all the necessary information for a formal copyright complaint and was prone to misuse by well-meaning deviants who would attempt to report images they did not own the copyright to
Getting the Most out of dA: CommentingUsually, when you read something involving 'Commenting', you think of deviations and the commenting platform that allows other members of the community to voice their thoughts and opinions on the art shown. However, what is pretty evident, and something that most of us may forget, is that deviantART runs on the ability to give and get comments, be it on pieces of artwork, our profile pages, forums, and everywhere else in between.Getting the Most out of dA: Commenting2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
In a sense, without the ability to give and get comments, deviantART wouldn't be much of a website, much less #1 of online art communities around. Comments are not solely the cause of what makes deviantART what it is, but it has a huge impact on a lot of things. By giving and getting comments, not only do we interact with other members to really make this a community, we also have the ability to get our voices heard.
It's quite an odd concept with us all facing screens, typing out our thoughts and opinions, but one thing we shouldn't forget is that commen

Fan Fiction On deviantARTGalleries MonthFan Fiction On deviantART5 months ago in Literature Features More Like This
What Is Fan Fiction?
Everyday, we are inspired by movies, television, novels, and other forms of media. They engage our minds with a variety of stories and characters, their plights and triumphs, their everyday minutiae. Fan fiction authors are so enamored with these other worlds and their inhabitants that they must partake in the stories which have brought them so much enjoyment. They expand on the current universe, explain gaps in the narrative and delve into characters' motivations.
A good fan fiction (or fanfic) is more than simple borrowing another writer's characters and universe. The fan fiction author must immerse his or her readers in the story, make them believe it is a natural extension of the source material. Characters have their own mannerisms and quirks; each universe has its own history and rules that need to be followed. The fan fiction author must master the nuances of those characters and the world they inhabit (unless purposely writi
Join Me on a Weekly Challenge to Spread Some Love!Hi guys! I'd like to introduce to y'all a small challenge that's very simple to spread a little bit of love around the site this year. I personally plan to do it for as long as I'm active on here, however to challenge you all, I only suggest trying it at least once (unless of course you all get as excited about it as I do!). This is mainly for me anyway, but I'd love if it you all gave it a shot! The challenge involves finding five people, completely randomly, and showing a little love to each and every one of them in a special way! I've received so, SO much help with the Warm Winter Project, I STILL don't feel like giving critiques, thanking everyone, and doing my weekly features is enough to last me all year until the Grand Finale Thank You I have planned, so this help me tide myself over until I winter. And I thought it'd be fun if each of you could try it out at least once, too!Join Me on a Weekly Challenge to Spread Some Love!3 years ago in Personal More Like This

I can't remember the source, but a few years ago I read this famous author's account of how it felt to have his first book come out, and he mentioned buying a copy himself because he was afraid no one would take an interest. Now this is a guy who managed to get not only an agency but a publisher (which is a whole pile of people who were like yesplz), and he's still afraid readers won't care. I was like, 'whoa mind blown.'
But anyway, the fact is that we are all strangers on the Internet and, by default, there is no reason for you to read my stuff or vice-versa. If you went and stood in Times Square with copies of your latest story, how many people would give you more than a passing glance? And how many of those people would get to the end of your work, and how many of those would offer critical feedback?
And, if you were one of the passersby, whom would you stop for?
Okay, I'm done scaring the shi
Did You Know - Manage DeviationsManage DeviationsDid You Know - Manage Deviations6 months ago in Art Features More Like This
Especially when you have quite a lot of artworks in your gallery, it can become tricky to manage your deviations and to sort through them.
That's why we have the manage deviations page. You can either access it via the direct link or by choosing "Manage Deviations" from the Submit Menu.
On that page you have listed your deviations & journals. The overview will give you the name, the category it was submitted to, the publishing date and it also lists your sharing options and if critiques and comments are enabled or disabled.
When hovering over your deviation title, you will also get a little preview of that deviation. This helps to know what deviation you are going to edit, when you can't remember what title goes with what deviation.
