This is another long one, and I apologize but I need to speak my mind. This journal is in response to the "righteously indignant" users making a fuss about me "selling" fanart of copyrighted characters in my recent Adventure Time post. To the person who signed up today just to write a nasty comment on my new Society6 page. To the person who flagged my recent Adventure Time illustration on DA and then proceeded to send me an e-mail about doing it (probably the same person). To the people creating multiple accounts to try and dissuade users from spending their money how they see fit. And to a long list of people who follow everything I do post just to make sure that their negative voice and attitude are the first voices anyone ever sees on all of my work.
It's All A Scam
I'm in an unenviable position. Popular enough to be well known, not popular enough to be making oodles of cash off my stuff. Part of that is my own fault for not really promoting and selling myself,

This week's featured deviant is RipleyNox. I took a small biography from her deviantID to use here as a sort of mini-introduction-- I'm a problogger and online content consultant. I interview people for podcasts, create websites and consult for tech startups and nonprofits. When I'm done with my work day, I write tons of fiction.
So, you're a problogger. What exactly does that entail?
I get paid to write blogs for myself and others, and having multiple streams of income coming in from various blogs via information products
Small UpdateI've been gone from the internet for almost 2 1/2 months now, and chances are I won't be coming back for quite a while longer. Nevertheless I just wanted to give a quick update and thank all my fans who have been so supportive of me these past few weeks/months.Small Update3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've been amazed at the number of genuine well wishes that I've received. I think the vast majority of my fans genuinely do enjoy my doodles and cartoons and that the well organized and extremely vocal "haters" of me and my work make up a very very VERY small percentage of my watchers. There have been some absolutely wonderful comments and messages being sent my way, and several of you have even sent me links to advice sites or inspirational posts. I truly do appreciate it. Thank you so very much.
I don't say Thank You enough, I think. Because of my fans I've been able to do some amazing things and I owe you guys a lot. Because of you'all, I've been able to visit another country and make friends from all over the world, somethin
Fandoms, Criticism Vlog, and Journals On FandomsFandoms, Criticism Vlog, and Journals3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Like most people, I'm a fan of a lot of things. However I don't often wade deep into fandoms themselves. For example, I like MLP:FiM, but I wouldn't call myself a hardcore Brony by any stretch of the imagination, as is evident by my continued botches of cutie mark colors (something no hardcore fan would EVER screw up).
Part of the reason I don't delve too far into fandoms is because fans can get very... emotional... about their given fandom. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it can sometimes be a crutch. I like a variety of series, but I'm not gonna throw a tantrum because of an episode name, or an animation mistake, like some people do. I don't like how angry or defensive fandoms can get sometimes, and for the most part I think people need to just calm down and relax and not be so standoffish.
Fans are, for the most part, good people who are just enthusiastic about a show or series. Just try to keep that enthusiasm from dipping into the negative side of thing
A Very Important UpdateI haven't posted here on DA in a while, so this might be new to a lot of you, but if you've been following some of the stuff happening over on tumblr it won't be unexpected. For the past several weeks I've been getting steadily worse both mentally and physically. I've been depressed before, but I've never been as bad as I've been recently. I've lashed out at people, been getting angrier and grumpier, been finding it harder and harder to listen to people giving me positive feedback, and have even started rapidly losing a lot of weight.A Very Important Update3 years ago in Personal More Like This
My enjoyment for drawing has been dropping, and many of you have probably noticed that I've been taking more and more time off lately. For every few comics I post, I tend to spend another week recuperating. But within the past 2 weeks it's spiked so bad that I seriously have to consider what's more important: my health or drawing.
So for the time being I am shutting down. I'll still be working on brentalfloss and updating those here, and the most current

John Carter of Mars
John Carter was a troubled movie in every sense of the word. It was given enormous studio backing, wasn't publicized well, and generally was a box office failure, resulting in a key Disney executive to resign in disgrace.
I won't say that it's the best movie I've ever seen, but it's far far above average and it frustrates me that people didn't see it or take to it. It offers so much wonderful imagery and possibilities for filmmaking it would be a shame to see this potentially new (in the sense that it's new to the big screen) franchise die right at the start.
There are a few weak actors, primarily the Mars princess, but they still nevertheless keep the story running at a nice pace. Plus there a
Unspoken rulesRecently I posted a Mass Effect 3 comic, and I've noticed that an unfortunate number of people ignored the description telling everyone that it was an old joke originally posted months ago. You don't have to like the joke, but if your major criticism is "this joke is no longer topical" then that isn't really my fault, is it?Unspoken rules3 years ago in Personal More Like This
So I think I need to re-explain a few things to make sure we're all on the same page.
About brentalfloss comics
I don't write it, I just draw it. Occasionally I'll have some artistic input, but outside that I generally follow the scripts tightly. Dan is in charge of writing, and he's been taking a lot of criticisms to heart lately. He's been experimenting with timing and panel layouts, and he's only going to get better as time goes on, but you've gotta give him time first. As a prime example: We haven't made a masterbation joke in almost a year, and that's entirely from the feedback we were getting. We are listening, it just takes time.
The brentalfloss comics are
History Repeats ItselfLast week a Connecticut action group going by the name of SouthingtonSOS held a video game burning event where local citizens were encouraged to bring various forms of violent media to be burned in a dumpster, no doubt a reaction to the recent Connecticut shooting.History Repeats Itself3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I wish I could say I am surprised about this, but sadly the whole media frenzy surrounding violence in video games and movies reminds me of something that already happened once and profoundly affected the media it was accusing: Comic books.
During the early days of comic books, things occasionally got a little risqué. EC Horror comics in particular delighted in rendering extremely gruesome images and disturbing themes in their comics, which were being sold to children unbeknownst to their parents (because naive parents at the time had no reason to suspect comics might contain "inappropriate" material). However all that changed in 1954.
German-American psychiatrist Fredric Wertham was upset about how disturbing some of those

Anthology DoodlesIn my most recent SYAC I touched upon how all us Fresh Epics artists started to doodle on the anthology covers.Anthology Doodles3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Then someone suggested fans who bought the anthology should post pictures so others can see the doodles too.
Oh dear, what have I started?
So here's what I'll do. If you bought a Fresh Epic's anthology that we all doodled something funny on, take a picture of the cover and submit it to your scraps and send me a link (Submitted to scraps to keep the clutter down from the main DA pages since technically this isn't suppose to be a site like photobuckets). I'll post them all up in a big journal so everyone can see all the variations.
How's that sound? Sound like fun?
Ok so just to be clear...
1. If you bought a copy of the Fresh Epic's Anthology where we doodled on it, take a picture
2. Upload it to your scraps
3. Post the link here in THIS journal. Don't send me e-mails or notes, it'll just get cluttered that way.
4. I'll post them as I get th

Sorry I haven't been around much lately. I think I need time away from the internet. Both to relax and to brush up on my artwork. I am genuinely sick of all the hate surrounding my namesake online, and when I say "genuinely," I mean it. The stress that the recent resurgence of trolling I've gotten has caused me to be quite ill. I know I shouldn't let what anonymous people on the internet say about me get to me, but it does. I need time to recuperate, to spruce and fix up SYAC, and to get back to a point where I genuinely enjoy drawing again. Right now there's no love or passion in my artwork, and it's mostly because of my defeated attitude: "Why bother, they'll just tear it apart anyway."
That whole "project positive" has been a complete bust too. I failed to live up to the idea, and in the process got really sick. I guess trying to force out a constant positive attitude like that was a mistake.

Wooow, this is probably the worst-run convention ever.
Let me start with the good stuff first, since the bad things will be a far longer list :<
As usual, the people are WONDERFUL T-T!!
It's always great to see familiar people from previous years/other cons (though I suck at remembering names, sorrrry) and meet/talk to new people. Some people kept coming back and buying a little more each time, it was really nice ;-;
Also a random girl hugged me and some guys asked to take photos together (which was a little awkward lolll).
:iconno-wei: gave me a GORGEOUS drawing of Katsura & Eli reading Parashi comics!! It's soo sweeetttt I kept taking it out and looking at it every hour or so, all weekend T_T I LOVE IT SO MUCH, THANK YOU SO MUCH!
All in all everyone was super nice and I got so many compliments >o
What do you think?I am thinking about making a little build a character comic/book type thingy. Its basically like my tip sheet but it will be in comic/book format. I have already split it into four categories, facial features, hair styles, clothes and body types. Basically its a little reference guide, where you can mix and match features to create your own characters, nothing too heavy or technical. I will also be posting the pages online for free since I don't like the idea of any of my tip sheet/references not being accessible. What do you think?3 years ago in Personal More Like This

How to get a traffic boost on your siteThis deviation was created for the build-your-platform group. How to get a traffic boost on your site2 years ago in Personal More Like This
This one applies to artist and writer alike. We have no choice but to operate online now, and the barrier for entry is very low. This means that there's a lot of junk out there, and the people who are looking for your stories and art (whether they know it yet) need a helping hand to find you.
How it works
Following the below instructions you will temporarily compound the attention to your site. This will give you the spike in traffic you want just before a major promo or event. And it's not just for you - it will help every single person you've asked to participate and link, too.
The most important lesson is that cooperative sites are much easier to run and promote than competitive sites. Competition is not the way of the web if you're looking to get a few more eyes on your work. You have to collaborate by exchanging content with other sites, then linking them together and sharing eac

An artist must tame his arousal to sketch his subject's beautiful form as the morning light illuminates the curves of her body.
While you'd probably call this piece "erotica" at first glance, that label doesn't do it justice. Here's a charming, quietly provocative character study which flirts coyly with eroticism, but never gets too explicit. The result is a charged, sensory story of hunger and romance.

So, :iconmzzazn: posted something on facebook a while ago that I totally agree, actually, we talked about it lots of times, it's about the "copying artstyle shit":
I really don't like it when artists heavily reference or plain out copy others and open up commissions for a much cheaper price than the original artist. Studying someone's art and taking a couple of features may be fine, but if someone looks at an art piece and can say: "wow this looks oddly similar to so and so's drawing style" that means you should change it up a bit.
um yeah, that's not cool! This makes me unmotivated and depressed! I work hard to get better, and I always try new stuff, add details I didn't use to in my drawings etc... just to make it "different"... y'know, my style isn't the same than it was 3 months ago, and I totally know my commissions aren't the cheapest ones, and that my style isn't the most original one, but I ca

You do not need to have read any of my fic to enter this comp, just a knowledge of the Mass Effect trilogy is required. And it's open to all artists and writers.

The time you spend creating the works that you give away or offer up as crit-bait are perfectly legitimate proofs that you are committed to the craft. These things can and should go on your resume, if nothing else in a "personal interests" section. I for one am not opposed to putting everything in a single timeline.
It's up to you to choose what you're comfortable with. If you've only been doing it a short time - and by this I mean less than 2 years - then add it as a personal interest. If it's been more than two years, you can call it "training" or "education", but only if you have social proof.
What is social proof?
Let's say that you've created some buzz around a few written pieces on a platform like deviantArt. You may not actually want these pieces attached to your permanent resume
