Clarifying an Issue with Stock ResourcesThere appears to be a fair amount of misunderstanding on the subject of stock resources so what I would like to do today is attempt to clarify several issues which are of importance to the artists who generously provide stock resources to the public for use and hopefully dispel the confusion and misinformation which is beginning to circulate.Clarifying an Issue with Stock Resources2 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
The first issue at hand is in regards to your personal stock terms
Your Personal Stock Terms
Officially deviantART maintains only one "automatic" restriction and that is "No Commercial Use" and that particular restriction can easily be overridden by the actual stock provider.
We only ask a few things from you in return;
Johnlock: A Dad's Guide to ShippingIf, when you hear the name Johnlock, you think of the 17th century poltical philosopher, John Locke, then keep reading. This guide is for you.Johnlock: A Dad's Guide to Shipping2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
My daughter, who is a freshman in high school, informs me that Johnlock is not, as I had presumed, the "Father of Classical Liberalism", but rather the "Father of All Gay Ships". In fact, it is a "gateway ship" for all sorts of "slash" couples. Confused? I was too. Like I said, keep reading.
Johnlock is John Watson and Sherlock Holmes, paired as a gay couple. More specifically, it is Martin Freeman/Benedict Cumberbatch (hence the term "slash"), in their roles as John and Sherlock, living in a fanfiction story arc (a sort of alternate universe) and being in a romantic relationship (hence the term "ship'") with each other. This is a VERY popular concept among young people (I can pretty much guaranty that my mother NEVER shipped Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce). Fangirls (and fanboys, to a certain extent), who are devoted to the BBC series Sherlock,
New Username SymbolsAs part of our ongoing process to make the user experience cleaner and more intuitive, we've launched a new set of username symbols designed to help easily identify deviant-types.New Username Symbols2 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
At a glance, the new symbols are quickly recognizable. When hovering over a username symbol, a tooltip appears, providing a brief explanation of that user's deviant-type. If clicked, a modal appears, giving a brief explanation for each username symbol, with "Learn more" links that lead to more detailed explanations.
A word from Heidi:
Over the years, a few things have come to seem like deviantART mainstays. Deviant green, intricate art categorization, colorful avatars, symbols next to usernames. In our constant re-evaluation of what's best for longtime deviants and new users alike, we do sometimes need to stop and ask ourselves if a makeover for some aspect isn't overdue. Changing username symbols was one of the harder things we evaluated.

Everything you know is wrong.
That's the title of an old Firesign Theater album, and I think of it often as I watch my kids progress through high school. Maybe it should read, "Many of the things you are taught have been dumbed down because teachers didn't think you could handle them." Whether it's glossing over quantum physics when teaching the nature of the atom, or stating that Socrates killed himself, because getting into the whole trial thing is too complicated, examples abound.
Anyway...most people, when asked to name the primary colors, would respond "red, yellow, and blue", and, when asked to define what a primary color is, would respond with something like, "they are the colors which can be used to make all other colors". That's what many of us were taught in school at a young age, but it's only partially true. People involved in printing know that the truest pri

A New Wind Lifts Storytelling
First imagined as a bedtime tale for his son by Kenneth Grahame in 1908, The Wind in the Willows has remained in the top twenty children’s stories ever since. But things have been getting weird out in the Willows, as the new comic on deviantART, Weirding Willows, will attest to.
Badger, Mole, Ratty and Mr. Toad are back… but they’re joined by Alice, Frankenstein’s Monster, Mowgli, The White Rabbit, Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny as they defend the world from the Wicked Witch of the West, Doctor Moreau, the Mad Hatter, Mister Hyde and the Queen of Hearts (not to mention the flying nightmare monkeys from Wizard of Oz.)

Hello - so good to be back!First of all thank you to all of my friends who have been so supportive during my exile! I've really appreciated all the kind words.Hello - so good to be back!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I am back and I hope that now I can gauge my time better and keep in touch. I just uploaded 4 new carvings.
My time away from you has been productive. I have about 25 houses completed! I set a goal of 100 by the end of May! Since the size of each carving can vary greatly, 100 will be a real test of my creativity and stamina.
Checking back on DA, I've found a lot of you haven't been on site much. Hope you are all creating and enjoying the winter. Do let me know how you are.
Another questionFirst thanks to all who have commented on my never ending questions regarding the DA home page and downloads. Now my next question, how do I add a picture to my journal or anywhere else on my profile page? I tried a cut and paste of the link but the picture wasn't thereAnother question3 years ago in Personal More Like This
My previous journal entry was full of typos - not having a great day! Really appreciate all of you!

Every country on earth has wee folk in Slavic lands they are know as Leshes in Russia as Zubotchniks, in Ireland they are the Sidhe (pronounced as Shee) but no matter what their name this distinct race inhabits the world of Middle Earth. Folklore for centuries has recorded their encounters with humans. It is believed that they are fallen angels who were not good enough to be saved, nor bad enough to be lost! Their glamour a form of the Gaelic word for fairy power is great. They are able to move quickly, change shape, be a breeze that rises on a calm day, a scent of flowers where no flowers grow.
Each element of our earth is directly under the influence of a band of wee folk. The Lesidhe (pronounced Lay-Shee), govern the forests. They are most active at dawn and dusk. Though no Lesidhe has ever harmed a mortal, their pranks are nasty and usually involving trying to lose people in the deep woods! They like to mimic mockingbirds to c
Ben WolstenholmeTwice I have seen this, in maybe 30 years - somebody improving at such speed it belies belief.Ben Wolstenholme2 years ago in Personal More Like This
The first time was Chris Weston, a year my junior. I landed a job as assistant to the late and very great Don Lawrence when I was 17, just edging out Chris. A year later Chris replaced me, and a year after that he was working for 2000ad. Today he's one of the finest comic strip artists in the business, as well as the best storyboard artist I have ever seen.
The second time was Ben Wolstenholme.
Don't get me wrong, Ben already had chops. He is an incredibly talented guy - and way too good looking for my liking too. He formed Moving Brands (a progressive, distinguished and award-winning branding agency) right out of college. He and I were both art scholars at the same school - he seven years my junior and following in my footsteps. He used to come round for drawing tips, and I'd draw him a Batman, or Judge Dredd, then get rid of him with a ruffle of the hair and head off down the pub.

It seems I'm lost. I can't seem to find the Forest in the trees. With such a bright light extinguished, it seems that the world is a much more dull place to be. The pointless call to "Please come back" echoes in the chasm that cannot summon back such a beautiful soul from the expansion that they were destined to become. DeviantArt won't be the same without you, and it seems that the world has been overcome with an overwhelming emptiness for those of us who had the privilege of basking in your radiance while you were here.
The beautiful, unique, inspiring creations reflect their creator, and will live on eternally as a constant reminder for generations to come of the spark that burned so brightly, and left such an impact on so many.

A Pop Culture Interpretation of The Supernatural
Every culture around the world created gods and other mythical beings by mixing and matching fanged and taloned animal parts—e.g., enormous eagle heads on lions’ bodies—human beings have always seemed to need to believe there are powerful and usually quite vengeful supernatural beings lurking just beyond the candlelight.
Supernatural beings come to serve several purposes:
They kept people on the lighted path of truth and goodness, fearful of exploring beyond;
They were a reminder of the punishment we deser

Wee Folk are upset!
Wow, ask for help from your friends on DA and the answers fly in - thank you all for the help!
It is amazing when you think of all the crap in the world and here we are on DA and we all seem to get along so well!
Maybe, if we could get our leaders - using the term leader loosely- on DA, we could help them work out the world's problems using art, prose and some jokes!
After the Holidays and free time, I am about to start some serious carving, so I will try to check DA atleast once a day, but the wee folk are upset that they don't have any new homes and as you can see from the picture above, you really don't want to deal with an angry wee folk! They may be cute and small, but they are fast and hold a grudge for centuries!

A Romanian causeMany of you probable haven't heard about the struggle of Romanian activists against a gold mining operation that defies all civic, environmental and national interests of my country. Romania is not such a hot subject like Syria and much of the Romanian mass media, part of it controlled by politicians, is not making efforts to educate and show this struggle. Rosia Montana is an area of great beauty and history and the old dacian and roman exploitation are visible and incredible well kept to this day.A Romanian cause2 years ago in Personal More Like This
The exploitation of that area by Gabriel Resources Ltd is highly debated as being a huge danger for the environment because their project involved huge quantities of cyanide to help with the gold extraction. This project has been in stand by for many years and now the recent government has decided to create a law that will allow such damaging extraction. Even more, they create the same l

Little Red Riding Hood is skipping down the road
when she sees the Big Bad Wolf crouched down behind a log.
"My, what big eyes you have, Mr. Wolf,"
says Little Red Riding Hood.
The surprised wolf jumps up and runs away.
Further down the road Little Red Riding Hood sees the wolf again;
this time he is crouched behind a tree stump.
"My, what big ears you have Mr. Wolf," says Little Red Riding Hood.
Again the foiled wolf jumps up and runs away.
About 2 miles down the road, Little Red Riding Hood sees the wolf again, this time crouched down behind a road sign.
"My, what big teeth you have Mr. Wolf," taunts Little Red Riding Hood.
With that the Big Bad Wolf jumps up and screams,
"Will you get lost? I'm trying to take a dump!"
There you go Glen

I will limit my time - so I'm not back in the naughty corner again soon- so look for some new deviations and comments! Please remember, I can't respond to all deviations and won't open anything in a slide show, video or one submit with 100's of deviations.
Happy Ground Hog Day!

I have been carving - 10 more homes finished- they are small most under 14 inches tall. Will put some up soon. Thanks to all who have sent good thoughts- really appreciate it!
Winter found us, 40 below windchills last week and today 5-7 inches of snow by midnight! Guess I will finally have to plow the driveway. All of you in winter - take care no too much more and then up here we go into our 5th season - Mud Season! Driveways, roads and parking lots are all liquid until it gets warm enough for them to start driving out.
Keep warm and my best to all!
Devious Journal EntryNow that we have increased our package to Wild Blue - for enough to buy groceries for a week! - we are back online - BUT - we have to be careful. So for a large number of our friends we have turned off deviations - sorry - but we have to do something to drop down our usage. We will watch how this goes and be able to change our settings.Devious Journal Entry3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Between my wife and I we have 127 years on this earth and we found out that in computer knowledge years that is 2! But we will keep learning and with such great people on DA helping us we will conquer and march forward!
So send a message if you have something you want us to see and we will do our best to keep connected!
As I said before I don't think 2012 is the end of the world, ( I think the ancients just got bored making the calendar go any further). BUT yesterday it was 41 degree ABOVE zero here and that is strange for northeast MN - 28 miles from Canada!
The joy of rural living! For the 2nd time in 5 weeks, I have exceeded my allotted usage on my Wild Blue Internet service. Once I do get back online, I will have to limit my interactions so not to exceed this again. Being new to DA and barely knowing my way around makes it a problem for me. So how do I limit the DA's that come in sometimes one entry with have several 100 DA to look at. I was told by Wild Blue that as soon as I log into my profile all the DA's, messages, notes, views whatever are downloaded and that is where I am using all my allotment.
Today I am on DA from a friend's, but coming here every day is not going to work. For now I am un-watching for my groups and others. My messages/notes will go to a personal email that my wife can check at work.

A week before Christmas....Things have really been busy, like most of us there isn't enough time to do all the things you have to do and all those you want to do! So I will start with a sincere apology to all on DA who have been so generous in sending me comments, adding me to favorites and watches and especially for choosing me for a DD! The response has been great and I am trying to reply to all who have taken the time to contact me. Between the time I need for everyday things and my carving, I find that I'm at the computer every night for hours trying to catch up. Since I am 62 and just learning all of this DA and computer stuff I realize it takes me much longer then you young folks! Talent!Hi Everyone, Ever since I became a member a few months back, I have been checking out all the different Deviant sites that I can during the day, and still get some carving done. I can do that because I am old and retired. Well in doing so, little did I know and realize that I would be in the company of and surrounded by so many talented people, both young and old from all over the world. And also, all the beautiful art that I have seen, and would love to own is amazing, I am honored to be with all of you. But now just think for a moment, if somehow we could take all this talent and turn it into peace throughout the world, it would be a one of a kind priceless masterpiece, a true work of art! Thank you again, JohnTalent!4 years ago in Personal More Like This
