"Skill in photography is acquired by practice and not by purchase"
- Percy W. Harris
The other week, a piece of my writing was selected for a Daily Literature Deviation. If you're curious you can see the article here. I was humbled by that, but my reason for mentioning it in Photography Bi-weekly is that *0hgravity then highlighted a website to me that I found absolutely fascinating. It's soul purpose is to highlight Endangered Languages through Photography. 3170 lens are capturing the people who hold the key to the worlds most secret languages. Once again something like this highlights the complete and utter importance of Photography and reminds us of how far we've come, and how much we can do from mobile ph

Weather Photography has always fascinated me - the weather in general does anyway, but capturing those changes, shifts in atmosphere and so on have always had me in awe. However when browsing the latest news within popular photography early this week I was stunned by an image that NASA had captured of hurricane Isaac as it lurked over the USA. I've been in a hurricane before, but it never felt as organised or precise as this image shows. This shows a smooth beautiful cloud formation. When below it's likely wreaking havoc and destroying lives. It's difficult to match the two together and contemplate them as the same thing. It's also incredible how we've advanced in terms of technology. This shot of Hurricane Isaac was captured at the end of a month in which images have been transferred from Mars. We, as a human rac

"Which of my photographs is my favorite?
The one I'm going to take tomorrow." ~ Imogen Cunningham
I'm loving jars this month. I'm not sure why, other than the fact that I saw some set up at a craft fair that I had a table at, and I just fell in love with them. A couple of large jars with some fairy lights nestled in them - the effect was immense. It was so simple too! Sadly the people weren't actually selling the lights, but once I'd made a little profit on my sales, I went over clutching my ten pound note and picked out a few. So I was delighted to see that on Flipboard today, there was an article exploring 19 great photos of jars. If you're stuck for inspiration, grab a jam jar (take the jam out first maybe) and start shooting. Shoot things through them, around them, in them - get creative! Jars are awesome.

'The day my mother bailed me out of jail she said to me...

-Jared Wingate aka *JaredWingate
Recently I started a forum post asking members of the community where they began with Photography. Specifically I asked what your first camera was and what provoked an interest in the hobby. Because for nearly everybody that's exactly how it begins. The response was incredible, however one reply in particular touched me. *JaredWingate permitted me to share so here we go...

Facebook has today changed its Terms of Service to allow Instagram to use your photographs pretty much for whatever it wants, whether that's advertising to sell or more. It's important that you, on an individual level, decide whether this is something that you want to have your work involved with or whether you stop using the service and move on to something else with a much more fairer Terms of Service. Regardless, be aware that things have changed. You can read more about that here. There are rumours that the TOS has now been changed again- but they are unconfirmed.

"No photographer is as good as the simplest camera."
~Edward Steichen
Since getting my first D-SLR, three years ago now, I have never been completely comfortable with the methods I use to transport it. With the camera came a bag, typical camera bag, over the shoulder type. But it's still not quite right. There are a wide range of camera bags out there now. Including one from deviantART - the dA Pro Camera Bag, but nothing has ever been quite what I need. The three common types of carrying a camera bag seem to be across the body, two straps on the back or even a belt. What do you use?

Celebrating Diversity #13In this issue of Celebrating Diversity, I would like to remind you of an amazing feeling...when you see a piece of art created in a medium or genre that you have little or no experience of working in, and it feels like you're witnessing something magical, something beyond your comprehension.Celebrating Diversity #135 months ago in Art Features More Like This
It's wonderful to revel in the joy of How do they do that? and find inspiration in the creations of other artists. So I challenge you to take a step outside of the galleries that you regularly browse and immerse yourself in the experience of indulging in something new.
How do you celebrate diversity?Do you regularly browse, comment on and collect art that's wildly different from what you create?
Do you watch artists who use mediums that you don't use in your own

Basking in the glory of finally getting recognised for your hard efforts and photographic skill is pretty awesome and at the start of this week I took the opportunity to enjoy *Fuzzypiggy's after he got published in a UK Photography Magazine. It's really nice when something like that happens and the knowledge that across the country - and because of deviantART and other networks - across the world, people are looking at your work. And if you're me, smiling! I once stumbled across *lauren-rabbit's work in Black and White Photography Magazine and was truly proud that somebody I had found here on deviantART was here in my mag! So have you been published? Has your work received any recognition that makes you proud? What are your tips to getting out there and having your work showcased?

This week I spied an awesome topic in *Fuzzypiggy's journal and knew instantly that it was what I would talk about for edition twenty eight. "Underground train system bosses are set to ban all photos under new proposals that have angered photographers.." You can read the full article for yourself here but I would love to get some discussion going amongst us all as to whether or not the proposed ban would effect you. I'm personally quite pleased that the latest articles report a U-turn in the proposals so it doesn't look

"Creativity, like human life itself - begins in Darkness "
-Julia Cameron."
I read a very interesting article this week debating Photography Vs Literature and which one of the two tells us more. Of course there is always the element that a picture could be accompanied by words but neither aspect is enough to tell a whole story. But as the article says, Photography has become a universal constant in the world today and is accessible to nearly everybody. Yet many still believe that only pure narration can truly tell a story. What are your thoughts? As Photographers we can choose to limit what we tell or show with a photograph, we can even mislead. Can we convey more with words? Or more with an image? You could describe a person with words but never truly give an accurate picture of who they are visually without a photograph...

Famous Photographs: The Afghan GirlIf you run a google search on what are the top famous Photographs of all time, The Afghan Girl is sure to appear. She is truly a face from History and one that many across the globe have tried to capture within others time and time again. But what exactly has made this image and its photographer so captivating?Famous Photographs: The Afghan Girl5 months ago in Photography More Like This

Eyes, they say, are the window to the soul. And capturing such a piercing and expressive look in a photograph is a highly sought after skill. The Afghan Girl exhibits suspense, suspicion and a sense of distrust at the person behind the lens, she gives off an air of maturity, a foreboding feeling - a vulnerability behind years of strength. That, is what makes her so captivating.
Sharbat Gula is her name, although few even know this rather important detail. Sh

Famous Photographs: Lunch Atop A SkyscraperWhilst the most famous photographs from across the years often feature famine, death, destruction and war, it's sometimes refreshing to catch a glimpse of one or two that don't exhibit depression, demise and conflict. Photo-journalism can work both ways to brief the viewer of an image on what it's like to step into somebody else's shoes. It can shock, bring a tear or even, by some miracle - a smile.Famous Photographs: Lunch Atop A Skyscraper4 months ago in Photography More Like This
Lunch Atop A SkyScraper does exactly that. It provokes a smile, it features across the world in postcards, books, greeting cards and other formats and ultimately it tugs at that part of your heart that knows there can be good in the world. So what makes it famous?

The internet has provided Urban explorers with many opportunities to garner news of new locations, the best places to go to 'urban explore' and what to avoid. Additionally social media means that we can share places that others will never see, and never hoped to see until the introduction of the internet and the ease with which we can communicate. So as this series goes on, we're going to look at some of the top Urban Exploration websites, at the current time, online. Photography Troubleshooting: Capturing SnowThe best of the Wintery weather conditions often come later on in the season, especially here in the UK. The next week or so will hopefully provide many photographers with the chance to capture those snowy scenes. So what’s the best way to achieve them?Photography Troubleshooting: Capturing Snow4 months ago in Photography More Like This
I’m sure many will agree that snowy landscapes are amongst the trickiest things to photograph. Exposure is the common problem; temperature is usually a close second! If your camera has a snow or winter setting then this will help override the auto white balance and lower the exposure, so you are already set to go. But if your camera doesn’t have these functions, then you might find these tips handy:
1.Before you head out, check your equipment. The white skies that often accompany a snowy scene are the most likely out of any shot you’ll take, to show up the dirt on your lens. Give it a good clean beforehand or you’ll be spending a long time with th

We're not pressured to do this and that, we don't even have to give a Daily Deviation every day, we choose how we promote our selected galleries/chats and forums and we're not fixed to any specific rule on how much or how little we do. Celebrating Diversity #3Hello, everyone!Celebrating Diversity #38 months ago in Projects More Like This
When we don't see enough of a particular art form, it is difficult for us to understand or appreciate it. This project aims to bring you features that you might not have seen otherwise from a variety of galleries around dA. For example, I tend to live and breathe photomanipulations and (to a lesser extent) digital art, and I really enjoyed taking a moment to browse the non-photomanipulation galleries for treasures. I found many, and I hope you will enjoy the features I have chosen.

Digital Art Feature - Fantasy."Fantasy art is a genre of art that depicts magical or other supernatural themes, ideas, creatures or settings. While there is some overlap with science fiction, horror and other speculative fiction art, there are unique elements not generally found in other forms of speculative fiction art. Depictions of ancient myths and legends, as well as depictions of modern day fantasy in the form of divine interventions and other magical or supernatural forces, are very common elements, and help distinguish fantasy art from other forms.
