so this is usual done really quick. i am trying to accomplish two things at this stage. first (and most important) the idea. as i have said before the idea is the most important thing. so the idea is an octopus lacing up a girls corset. the second thing i am establishing is the rhythm of the piece. not how organic and squiggly the octopus is and how angular and deliberate

FAQ! Finally!Hello everybody!FAQ! Finally!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've been getting an increase in notes and messages lately asking all kinds of things. Problem is, I'm far from having the time to answer all these questions individually (even if I did have it it would probably make more sense to spend it drawing), but I don't want to leave them unanswered either since I appreciate everyone's feedback a lot. So I decided to make a kind of FAQ, since I'm mostly being asked the same things over and over.
I'll try to group these semantically so reading though them makes a bit of sense.
Did you ever do any tutorials?
- Yes, I spent a lot of time on this one:
There's a lot of explaining in there, so please before you ask anything technique or learning related, read it thoroughly first.
I also have a ton of step-by-steps in this folder here: http://algenpfleger.deviantart.com/gallery/8622578
And I also uploaded a ton of layered Photoshop files: http://algenpfleger.deviantart.com/gallery/28996547

"To escape criticism - do nothing, say nothing, be nothing."
Everyone wants to be praised for their work. It's the extremely rare individual who creates things and doesn't care how they're received. Dealing with criticism can be painful, but at the same time enormously helpful.
Let's begin with understanding the function that positive and negative feedback serve. Positive feedback (pointing out things you did WELL) increases commitment to the work you do, by enhancing your experience and your confidence, white Negative feedback (pointing out things you did WRONG), on the other hand, is informative - it tells you where you need to spend your effort, and offers insight into how you might improve.
With that being said, positive and negative feedback are affective and motivate differently, their impact varies from different peop

OBJECTIVE: SELL THIS DAMN BOOK, DANNY.
At first, Gabriel was nothing more than a character named ONE. He had no backstory, no face, nothing. I just wanted to create a character that was a badass, yet with a sense of humor.
I was inspired by such characters as Boba Fett, Wolverine, Deadpool and Clint Eastwood from The Man With No Name trilogy. I needed to create something that fit that build, however, I'll admit, it wasn't intended at first.
I uploaded him on December 8th, 2008, (which, you can find here: http://danluvisiart.deviantart.com/art/GABRIEL-107612010?q=gallery%3Adanluvisiart%2F7848546&qo=50) and he became one of the most popular characters of the series, if not, the most. Soon I started finding him on forums, websites, fashion blogs (what?), and more.
But what hit me so hard was that the majority of the comments rela

OBJECTIVE: CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AND STORY BUILDING
I began working pretty heavily on LMS during the first quarter of 2009. I had now a handful of characters, a rough idea of the story, and a general scope of what I wanted the book to be. To get started, I felt every book should have a theme. Movies do, right?
Spider-Man: Great powers, great responsibility.
Batman: Be more than just a man, a symbol, and be remembered a legend.
Star Wars: The myth of a heroes destiny, and the truth that allows him to be set free.
Who was Gabriel? What type of character or archetype was he? What were his rises and

I Was Not Ready For This
What did I just sign myself up for?
I had never made, drawn, written, or created a book in my life, so this was all pretty foreign to me. I had told Heavy Metal publishing I'd do it on my own dime. Reason was, this was my project.
Not that I can't cooperate or collaborate, but this time I wanted to create what I saw in my head, and not have a voice behind me telling me what to do and what not to do. Kevin Eastman, head of HM Pub, was incredibly generous in this decision and told me to lead the way, and I tried my damnest.
So I started with the obvious fundamentals. What is the story of LMS?
Now, as a whole, LMS's simple logline is incredibly simple. A man who gets framed for a crime he didn't commit, breaks out of prison and goes after those
Aphrodite Contest - $1000 and more in prizes!Have you ever wanted to have your concept art idea used in a comic? Well you have your chance now (unless you are already a published pro and this shouldn't be new to you)!Aphrodite Contest - $1000 and more in prizes!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
In short we are holding a concept art competition for the character of the goddess Aphrodite for use in our ancient Greek mythology series, Theoktonia!
In our poll we asked you what would you wish to win the most, in a concept art contest for an established comic. We heard you, we considered your votes and the best part is, aside the money prizes (1000$ in total), the top winner will actually declare Aphrodite's looks in Theoktonia!
Talk about permanent recognition right?
Actually there is an even better part, the community will decide by voting their favorite concepts! Yay for democracy!
This will by no means be just an illustration contest. All visual media will be accepted, be that 3d art, computer art, traditional art, photography, you name it!
So if you can't draw, grab a camera and cosplay!!

style is just how the artist feels like treating his or her world at any given time!
it is influenced by the styles of other artists the artist admires
it is an amalgamation of influences mixed with personal sensibility....
it is perpetually changing and evolving
and it is not a trademarked property
see, i personally am a mix of influences from michael turner , adam hughes, marc silvestri, alex ross a few concept artist, and my design is greatly influenced by stan winston studio
my cartoonyer style is influenced greatly by disney and don bluth with a dash of manga and a healthy dose of j scott campbell who can probably tell you a similar story about the origins of his own style
its the nature of humanity people.
we stand on each others shoulders striving for greatness. so too will i influence quite a few artists who will adapt my own approaches into their workflow.
also.... i'm batman!
just to see who is still reading XD

This so-called MOOD SYSTEMMany people, especially emoticonists, have been wondering about this mood system. As far as I know, spyed came up with the idea, and he told me that it's his favorite project that was released with v5. spyed messaged me around 2am a few nights ago and asked me to take a look at the Mood System. He explained to me what it was and what his vision of it was. I went through the list, adding in emotes and categories/sub-categories. A half-day later, the moods system was complete with 190 total moods and emoticons. Many of these emoticons were not in emoticon legend. I could have picked out more that were in there, but I ultimately decided that it would be a good thing to bring in some new life. Much love goes to Pachunka, dionyziz and the other IT geeks for coding this up in collaboration with the Creative Team. If you have any suggestions for the moods system, feel free to post them here and I'll see what I can do.This so-called MOOD SYSTEM9 years ago in Personal More Like This

Quick bit of help here, because I'm not sure if everyone knows the best way to handle this if you want to record your progress while drawing in Photoshop, Manga Studio, Painter, whatever.
IF YOU ARE USING WINDOWSYou may have tried some of the screen recorders out there like CamStudio, FRAPS, or some free ones out there. You may have noticed, or had become frustrated with, the fact that many of these programs cause a significantly huge hit on your system's performance. When you try drawing in Photoshop, your tablet response comes to a screeching halt. Then you find a program that records without impacting your drawing performance -- only to find that the resulting video recorded at about 1 frame every 3 seconds. Then you tried FRAPS, then found out that 4 minutes of video resulted in a 3.2GB file. All of these are less than ideal.
A while back, I searched all over the net for a program that encoded video from my screen

I've no doubt made journals like this in the past, but here's another one. This page was in dire need of an update, either way. : )
I could probably talk your ear off for a mile and a half about why I should be the last person you ask for creativity-boosting advice. Aaaand I have my reasons for this, but that's not really what anyone who writes me wants to hear, I think. It's just a fair warning. I'm not an accredited teacher, I was far from the most capable person at my college, I've made a metric crapton of mistakes, and I am nowhere near where I'd like to be in my own personal artistic endeavors. If that doesn't bother you, well, keep on reading!
The best way I could aid anyone interested in bettering themselves would probably be by giving you the advice that inspires me the most. Stuff I've heard from frie

looking back to about a year ago i had doodled a very rough sketch in my sketch book of a girl walking an octopus. and when i say rough i mean rough. the sketch itself was nothing more than a study of contrasting silhouettes. i was drawn to the play between a very rigid character and a squiggly one.
i had forgotten about that sketch until i heard about a steampunk t-shirt design for www.welovefine.com. i thought that this design might have a chance so i went ahead and finished it off. well it got alot of attention and i am happy to say that it won the competition. the shirt started to sell

Ladies and gentlemen!
The rules of this collab are simple.
You do not have to be a member of this group to participate.
First of all, choose one of your original characters. If you don’t have any, but still willing to participate, just make one, or imagine for one-shot. All your character has to do, is to have a name and an appearance.
Second of all, dress him, her or it into the steampunk costume. It is great if your character is originally a steampunk one, a robot or other being. If he, she or it isn’t – it’s time to dress up! Remember, though the group accepts all of the steampunk sub-genres (dieselpunk, fantasypunk, etc.), this particular is about steam verse.
Third, give him, her or it a Jack-o

Draw every day; nothing works like practice, and relax, setbacks are temporary and anxiety smothers genius. Entertain your curiosity, but don't let it run a muck.
Use music to your advantage, don't let it muffle your thoughts. Nearly everyone enjoys music; wake up to something, but turn it down when you need to think. Explore new music; share and be receptive in this.
Get lost in your work, don't dawdle; be economical.
Respect anyone willing to support your work; listen to what they say. Take time to appreciate flattery, but don't revel in it. Heed insults; DON'T respond to them. Receive every criticism, but don't let them discourage you.
Make as many friends as you can; don't let them take advantage of you. DON'T take advantage of them.
Have heroes, but not idols. Approach them and don't waste your time on anyone who treats you badly. Be modest, bu
Our First LoveWe all loved it at first. Our First Love2 years ago in Personal More Like This
We loved creating. Those first attempts were driven by enjoyment. We weren't doing it to get better, to "practice", or even, God forbid, for a paycheck. We were doing it to do it. A joy unto itself.
In some ways, I find all my current work to be little more than efforts to rediscover that first love. To get back to that feeling I had at the beginning, before all the training, practice, and work. Before I was "serious." Back when drawing wasn't about creating something pretty but just having fun. No pressure, no demands, no expectations.

So what's the topic?
Hitaru and Veperine!
No specific theme, draw whatever you want with Hitaru and Veperine, let your creativity flow!
So, who are these two?
Hitaru is my hubby's OC, a fallen angel. Veperine is my oc! Let's talk a little more about them.
Veperine is often seen as quiet and solitudal, but once you get to know her, she can be aggressive and combative, especially because she has a knack for showing off her electric red arcane magic. She likes to show people who's the one with real power, and loves showing off that magic power of hers. She also is versatile in using her weapon, a double bladed spear. She combines the two together to unleash devastating attacks!

O__________OSo last night I stopped at a gas station to get, well, gas, while I was doing my paper route. I had a complaint from a customer, stating they did not receive their paper yesterday. Me being, well, me, I carry around with me (in my car that is) a small portable typewriter. I don't have good penmanship AT ALL, so when I need to leave a customer a note on a manner I type one up and put it with their paper. Anyway,so I'm sitting there pumping gas while typing on my typewriter listening to my MP3 player, which is hooked up to play through my car speakers. Suddenly some good ol' Benny Goodman comes on. Oh yea, I"m happy, so I turn it up some.O__________O3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I then hear the click of the gas nozzle finishing fillin' up Simmons (my Blazer to who don't know the story) and stepped out to put it back. From inside the gas station a ninty-ish year old man walks- no- waddles out and heads for his car in front of mine. Well he hears the music, so waddles over to me curiously. By that time I'm back inside my vehicle
