Calling all beta testers, bug lovers and feature loving deviants.
I have exciting news! devBUG is looking for some new deviants to be Alpha Tester!
But what is an alpha tester?
An Alpha tester is a bit like a Beta tester only they get to test out new features before Beta testers do.
So, what do alpha testers get to do?
As an alpha tester you'll have the chance to talk to staff and developers about new and upcoming features, and help find and report any bugs that there may be, before it goes to beta testers or th
Project Educate: Being a People PersonSo you've got the equipment, you've got the top notch camera, the lighting, the studio, the backdrop and even the perfect weather - everything you need for a portrait photography shoot right? Wrong. The key behind all photographs that contain a living and breathing subject is to have the natural look. Just like the key to a conceptual shot is having the idea, the key to portraiture photography is having the eye. Co-operative subjects help too!Project Educate: Being a People Person2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I have especially found in the past, that people develop a pained and strained look on their face when the camera is pointed in their direction. Interestingly enough, it happens more often at Weddings. The bride and groom quite often develop the look that they might have when they've just finished writing out the cheque for me to photograph their big day...
Then, quite suddenly one day, I got it. It was when a stunning bridesmaid at a wedding lifted her hands in front of her face and squealed when I clicked the camera in her
The Literature Community ExperimentThis is a typical example of a Beccalicious shower pondering! The idea of this is to try and bring together as many people as possible all in one journal, but not for the sake of making a big number, but to encourage interaction and share useful tidbits. We often say the "literature community" has drifted apart over the past few years and this is just one attempt to try get people to come back together. It's a little hippy, perhaps a far-fetched idea, which is why I am calling it an "experiment". This could be successful and could be a complete fail- only you guys and your efforts can decide its fate! The Literature Community Experiment1 year ago in Literature Features More Like This

This article was written due to the recent uproar from some groups of the community because of the new username symbols.
Change is something handled differently by everyone. Some people accustom to change very quickly, others may take a long time or may not adjust to change at all. In regards to deviantART Site Updates, it's important to know ways to welcome change and embrace it. You are not expected to love every feature that is released, but giving it a chance before bashing it is a right step forward.
Before reading on, please note that this article is not directed at any one individual, but as a community as a whole. All views expressed in this article are mine and mine alone and do not reflect the views of deviantART.com.
When a new feature is released, most deviants give their first impressions of said feature. Some may even react like this:

November ThankstivityIt is easy to point out the flaws....November Thankstivity1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Cliques, lack of communication, bad art that gets too many views, good art that doesn't get enough views, crappy DDs, and on and on and on. The complaints people have about deviantART could fill a book the length of the Bible, but November is a month for remembering what we have to be thankful for and so I challenge you, Solutions Seekers, to take a look around and find at least three things about deviantART that make you thankful for the community.
Create a deviation or journal that explores at least three reasons you're thankful for deviantART. It can be anything from tutorials and other resources to friends you've made to great art you've stumbled across to a favorite group. Whatever it is that keeps you coming back, I want to know about it.
One entry per deviant.

Tips for Young Writers...with some help from BuffyHello readers!Tips for Young Writers...with some help from Buffy10 months ago in Personal More Like This
I spend a lot of time talking with young writers about writing. Whether it’s the art of putting a novel together or ways to break into the industry, I get asked a lot of the same questions. So I thought I’d compile a list of tips here for writers getting started at any age. Maybe you’ve heard some of these before, maybe not. Either way, I hope they help you along your path.
1. Show, don’t tell.
Yes, you’ve definitely heard this before. A million times over. But what does it mean? The difference between showing and telling is the difference between sitting in a cafe in Paris sipping a latte and reading a menu online. You want to immerse your reader. If I’m telling, I’m over-describing, maybe even listing scenery. If I’m showing, I’m slipping in details where they fit naturally.

FotoFriday with CRliteratureHello there!FotoFriday with CRliterature1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
My name is Becca and I am one of the literature community volunteers! Your photography CVs have kindly allowed me to hijack their journal space so I can ask for your assistance in a project we are re-launching on deviantART via our group CRLiterature
The project is called "FotoFriday" and the concept is simple- every fortnight on a Friday, we will post a photograph by a photographer on deviantART and use it as a writing prompt. Writers can write whatever they like using this photograph as the base of the inspiration- it can be poetry, prose, a script or even a drabble- anything! This is a really exciting and open prompt and in the past has had some great success!
However, we feel its a little bit cheeky to go around and use photographs without permission. Therefore we are approaching you guys to create a "photographers directory" of people who will allow us to nose in their galleries and use your photograph (with full credit given). This is a fantastic way to extend y
A New Way to Make SuggestionsHello Beta Testers!A New Way to Make Suggestions9 months ago in DeviantART Announcements More Like This
For some time we've been running a limited test of the Ideas Forum on our Zendesk Help Desk integration. Today, we're expanding this test to our Beta Testers.
This forum allows for a great deal of flexibility in how we approach suggestions.
We can mark items that are planned, completed, or not planned at this time. We can also highlight staff responses on forums, giving more weight to responses that are important in informing deviants why we can, or cannot, take a suggestion into consideration at this time.
Deviants can vote on one anothers' posts, giving greater community control over what content is reviewed. The more votes, the higher the suggestion will appear in the forum! Unlike our current forum, threads don't expire, and when creating a new thread you'll be prompted with similar threads.
These are only a few of the features the new forum has, but altogether our testing has shown thus far that

Sometimes, sub-categories can be very confusing and there are a fair few galleries within Photography that have an extensive amount of sub-cats. Are there too many? Do you think there needs to be an

PE: Forum OverviewAfter Astralseed's awesome article on Breaking Into Chatrooms, today's article will be focused on providing a general overview of the forum!PE: Forum Overview1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
Within the forum, there are many Forums that you can enter into to create threads for discussion. These threads encourage other people to make posts in response to the 'original post' created by the 'original poster' - the person who created the thread. If you scroll down the forum page, there are many Forums that focus on a specific topic so that all threads within that forum must relate to the specific topic of the Forum itself. For example, if you stumble across the 'Gaming Forum', the specific topic is 'Gaming', so all threads within the 'Gaming Forum' must relate to 'Gaming'. This is important because if your thread does not relate to Gaming, it will be moved or locked.
After clicking the forum, for example, the
Why you feature stolen work?!?!Lately there seem to have been a few myths flying around in particular with regards to how we as Community Volunteers, give Daily Deviations. Many people seem to think that we sit at our desks in dark little rooms and let out evil laughter whilst we purposefully feature stolen work. The dark rooms and laughter - well I can't say yes or no on that one! But I can promise you it's not our intent to give exposure to people who have stolen work. I recently featured a piece of work that turned out to be stolen. However I went into extensive conversations with the artist before I featured it, and with added metadata and dates, it's difficult to know where to draw the line. I've given people the benefit of the doubt before - and it's worked out nicely as their work has been legitimate. Below are some comments I have seen being thrown around the past few days - and hopefully an attempt to bust the myth. Why you feature stolen work?!?!1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This

Need Input for Message Center RevampIn the deviantWATCH, we would like to switch to Feeds vs. Messages you have to "X" away one by one.Need Input for Message Center Revamp1 year ago in DeviantART Announcements More Like This
Now, I could use a wide net of input for message center revamp, but really I'd like to start with a narrow view of just deviantWATCH.
The deviantWATCH lives within Messages, which contains within it Feedback, Notices, etc. as well. deviantWATCH messages come in like crazy in your message center once you are watching 20+ people. And of the folks reading my Journal, I know you guys tend to have over 100+ people that you +WATCH.
Help me understand something. Because if we go off and make changes, we're going to have a riot on our hands. And no one needs that kind of sadness in their lives:
Why can't we switch to feeds?
Feeds would effectively index YOUR deviantWATCH in to deviantART's search engine, so your deviantWATCH Deviations would have all of the filters and capabilities of the home page. Categories, Newest, Most Popular 24 hours, 1 week, 1 month, etc. BUT a
PE: Stock, Resources and deviantART RelatedStock & ResourcesPE: Stock, Resources and deviantART Related1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
I see Stock & Resources as a category of art on deviantART where the entire focus is on helping others and providing them with what they need. This helps artists of any medium! Photomanipulators for example rely heavily on the stock photos they find here. If you draw or paint, digitally or traditionally, many stock photos can be hugely helpful as reference, as can line art and textures. There's literature templates, fonts, fractal and vector resources, designs & patterns for artisans and crafters.. and then there's tutorials for any kind of art, and about deviantART itself.
So one great way to contribute something to the community and your fellow artists is to provide such resources!
We will not go into this in depth as it has its own Community Volunteers and Project Educate weeks that should help you get started!
