Fragonard: Subtle Erotica In Art

Mon Mar 9, 2015, 7:18 PM
Img-00 by techgnotic

“The Swing” (a.k.a. “The Happy Accidents of the Swing”)

A painting by John-Honore Fragonard

Oh, what a tale a painting can tell. A lovely young lady, a child of finer society, enjoying the chaste thrill of a garden swing. Is that her father back in the shadows, providing each push for his sweet little girl? He must not see the daring young man hidden in the bushes just beneath the young woman – though she would seem to be making eye contact with the young man. Is he her lover? Her lover-to-be? So many questions. But one thing is certain. With each push of the swing her young suitor on the ground is afforded one more tantalizing glance up her briefly billowing skirts.

How did Fragonard’s most famous rococo era (circa 1767) painting come into being?

According to a contemporary memoir, the notorious French libertine Baron de St. Julien commissioned the work, depicting his mistress and himself as the naughty couple, with the instruction, “I should like you to paint Madame seated on a swing being pushed by a Bishop.” Gabriel Francois Doyen turned down the commission. Fragonard accepted – and created the painting that became the emblematic symbol of rococo art. (Fragonard fulfilled the commission except for declining to make the man pushing the swing be a bishop.)

From joie de vivre! to vive la Revolucian!

The rococo period that had defined 18th century France was about twenty years from coming to its end, it’s “frivolity” (the Enlightenment philosophers’ insult) to be consumed in the flames of the approaching (deadly serious) French Revolution.

Your Thoughts

  1. Hanging naughty portraits of their mistresses in their homes, in the guise of being fine art pieces, was popular in Europe with wealthy married men. Do you find this any better or worse than simply having formal nude paintings hidden away under lock and key?
  2. The Rococo Period in France, of which “The Swing” is emblematic, was followed by the exceedingly violent French Revolution. Do you think the excessive “frivolity” of the wealthy ruling class contributed to the anger expressed in the uprising in 1789?
  3. “The Swing” has been visually referenced in two recent animated Disney films, “Tangled” (2010) and “Frozen” (2013). Do you think these are heart-felt homages to Fragonard and his art, or just some Disney smart alecks hanging “naughty” art in their Disney home?

Oh, what a tale a painting can tell. A lovely young lady, a child of finer society, enjoying the chaste thrill of a garden swing. Is that her father back in the shadows, providing each push for his sweet little girl? He must not see the daring young man hidden in the bushes just beneath the young woman – though she would seem to be making eye contact with the young man. Is he her lover? Her lover-to-be? So many questions. But one thing is certain. With each push of the swing her young suitor on the ground is afforded one more tantalizing glance up her briefly billowing skirts.

Update 11/4/13: Thank you for all the awesome entries guys! Even with the release of Pokemon X & Y, this has turned into the biggest turnout yet. I'll be sending the judges instructions later today, and we should have the winners by this Friday. ;)

If your submission isn't shown in the contest gallery folder, please note asap so that we can get it fixed. ;)

It's that time of year again! Kick@$$ Mode turns two years old on October 31st! More like terrible twos. It's going to be an exciting month, what with Pokemon X and Y coming out, so I'm allowing mutliple-themed entries this year!

Celadon City is coming up, and I need A LOT of cameos--especially female trainers for the gym--so this is the perfect opportunity to get your OC featured in Kick@$$ Mode~ ;)

-----

Rules:
1. Draw the Kick@$$ characters celebrating 2 years of nuzlocking~
2. Entries must contain at least 1 character from the Kick@$$ cast.
3. Optional: Feel free to include your own character(s) and show them interacting with mine. ;)

And that's basically it!

-----

- Entries are due Sunday, November 3.
- Submit your entries to the contest gallery in :iconteam-kickass:, or send me a note with the subject line "anniversary".
- Entries will be judged on originality, creativity, and...all that other BS.
- Multiple submissions are allowed, but only one entry can win per person.
- Participants can win in one of the following categories:

Best Halloween Themed - Basically the same as last year's contest, though characters don't necessarily need to be in costumes this time.
Best X & Y Themed - Simple. Draw the Kick@$$ cast celebrating in Kalos or just hanging out with gen 6 pokemon.
Best Comic - Regardless of whether you used one of the above themes, all comic entries fall under here.
Best Story - Same as with comics. If your entry is written, it goes here.
Most Original - Everything else goes here.

Note: Each category will have a first, second, and third place winner. That means that there's a possibility of 15 winners in all!

- All winners get to have one of their characters cameo in Kick@$$ Mode!
- If you've already had a character cameoed, but still want to enter, you can opt to do one of the following:

:bulletblack: Request a different character be cameoed.
:bulletblack: Volunteer a friend's character to be cameoed in your place.
:bulletblack: Be rewarded with points instead.

Have any questions? Feel free to ask in the comments. :)

Good luck!

At 5:45 this morning I hear my mom getting ready for work. She checks for the cat as usual, and after a little over 3 weeks he finally shows up at the door! Hearing how happy my mom and brother were, I got out of bed to check things out.

He lost a good chunk of weight...I can feel his ribs and back now, not to mention, I can pick him up a lot easier, haha. He was pacing around the house a bit, not being used to us for a while. My other two cats are keeping their distance at the moment, so it will take some time for them to get used to him again. Maybe he was gone this whole time to trim some fat? I don't know, all I know is that I'm so happy he's back! As I am typing this, my cat is laying next to me. :aww:

I want to thank everyone for their support. Thanks for caring and cheering me up through my rough patch. Even if I haven't gotten around to replying back to some of you, I have read every comment here and I do appreciate it :)

------------------------------------------------------

*sigh*  My hopes for a good year are already shot down...

One of my cats hasn't been home in days, and me along with my family are worried. He's done this before, but it was usually 2 days until he would come home. It's been 5 days now and I'm fearing the worst. The first couple of days I figured he would stay out like this, cause he hasn't been out since the fall, so all that energy he's got needed to be let out. He doesn't bother with the winter anymore due to the cold and well, his age ( he'll be 13 in Oct. )

Just seeing my other cats without him bothers me...my household doesn't feel complete. I know not everyone is an animal person, so this might come off as no big deal to some, but when you've had them for so long and something like this happens, it really hurts...

Sorry to be a downer, I just needed to vent right now...I really hope he'll be back soon. :'(
