Things you should never ask an Artist to doI write this to not spark a debate or judgement, only to share my personal opinion and experience in hopes of benefiting you and offering insight to people thinking about hiring an artist.Things you should never ask an Artist to do3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Things you should never ask an Artist to do:
1. Free Work.
Do I really have to explain this one? You wouldn't walk into any other business offering a service and ask for free clothes or a burger right? No, you pay for them without question and they take a lot less creativity, time to make and cost a lot less. Why ask people to work for free on something you couldn't make yourself? If you believe in your vision, then I suggest find funding for it to pay the people doing the work for you. This goes for family as well, don't get me wrong, I love my family and enjoy doing something for them but it means so much more when I OFFER to do something for free than when it's expected. Let the artist decide whether or not they want to give their time for free without asking them, as a rule treat them with res
Advice For Anime Con Artist Alley TypesI was recently asked for some Artist Alley tips, and it made me realize two things: one, that I've been going to cons for 13 years and working Artist Alleys for 8 (good god), and two, that I had a huge guide typed up already. I'd been meaning to post this for a while - so I dug up that ancient draft, refined it, and put it over here: Massive Artist Alley Advice Post</b>Advice For Anime Con Artist Alley Types6 years ago in Personal More Like This

STUFF TO BRING:
- Large water bottle or thermos - Keep this with you and refill it often. You'll be talking ALL WEEKEND, so keep dehydration at bay. (Be sure someone can watch your table during pee breaks.)
- Cell phone - You won't be able to hear your phone ring over the noise of the alley, but text messaging is a godsend at cons. Make sure your phone is set to Vibrate, and keep it close to you.
- Healthy snacks that keep - I recommend apples, alm
Colorists: Having Difficulty Finding A Skintone? This happens to me all the time.Colorists: Having Difficulty Finding A Skintone?2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
I'm starting out an image, and for the life of me, I just cannot determine what color I should use for the skintone. I wish I had a crystal ball that would show me thirty minutes into the future so I can see just how a character will look after applying all the necessary shading, anatomical detailing, and highlights based upon the base color I use. A lot of times, it'll appear too faint, too desaturated, or on the flip side, way too bold and gleaming like a bronzed deity caked in a thick lathering of walrus grease.
Which is delicious, by the way.
FORTUNATELY! The folks at The Humanae Tumblr seemed to have a crystal ball of their own. Not so much one that shows the final product of my work, but one that certainly told them of my many incredibly frustrating endeavors into spending a good chunk of time shading a character's skin only to realize the base tone was absolute g

I believe that Minecraft is the future of massive multiplayer games, and I'm surprised that none of the big developers/publishers have cottoned onto it yet.
They look at Minecraft and think its success is down to its business model, or to its blocky, retro charm.
It's down to the fact that you get out of it what you put into it.
With a MMORPG, there are pre-scripted quests. With Minecraft, you set the quests yourself or others.
User created content is the key. All you have to do is provide the players with the tools to build.
There are two types of gamer: wall builders and wall breakers.
Wall builders are the ones that spend an age in an RTS game getting their base just right. They play SimCity and act as Dungeon Master during an RPG.
Wall breakers are the type to follow the mission brief. They get set a quest and they follow it. They're the Call of Duty crowd and they're never more happy than when
Zombie Apocalypse!Sorry, sorry, but I just have to! It's a much talked about subject among my friends and society in general - What would you do in a zombie apocalypse?Zombie Apocalypse!2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I gotta admit, I think about this WAY too much. I acknowledge that I'm being totally dumb. Actually, my fear isn't a zombie apocalypse (let's face it, scientifically it'll never happen) but of either nuclear fallout or some kind of fast spreading virus.
But let's face it: everyone has a plan, even if they won't admit it. Everyone has at least pondered the subject.
Truthfully? I'll probably be one of the first to go. I'm rubbish in emergency situations, I panic, I have absolutely no outdoors survival skills, I rely heavily on technology and I'm very, very weak. Also if they're RUNNING zombies I'd be like, NOPE. F*** that. Ain't even gonna try. Everyone (especially boys) always think they're gonna be like Daryl Dixon (Walking Dead) and be all badass. I will readily admit that that will not be me. BUT. If by some miracle I manage to

Commissions Contracts: A Must Have. Yes, there is a lot to read and Yes you should read it. Copy it, paste it and edit it to suit your needs as a commissioner or commissioned artist. Protect yourself by drafting a contract and understanding it.</a>Commissions Contracts: A Must Have.6 years ago in Art Features More Like This
It has come to my attention that many deviants commission their work and hold proceedings entirely over deviantArt. In the case that your client/commissioned artist begins to use and distribute your work illegally you will need to have a greater standing than simply a bunch of e-mail print outs if you are to go to court over the matter of misuse. Often the matter is over misunderstanding, which a contract will also help clarify for both parties.
I cannot stress how important it is when doing commissions to have physical signed copies of an Artist/Client Commission Agreement or at the very least a signed confirmation of engagement. It takes longer to organise, especially with overseas clients, but it protects the rights of both parties to the work and is worth the day or so
Art For a CauseGame artists from around the world are uniting to create an art book to support Kevin Griffith's (CowAndCheese) battle with terminal lung cancer.Art For a Cause4 months ago in Personal More Like This
Kevin Griffith is a senior artist on the Diablo 3 team at Blizzard and has been fighting a rare and ruthless form of cancer known as Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma (ASPS).
The art book will feature original fan art from Kevin's favourite games and everything about this project screams deviantART to me! We have a ridiculously talented community of artists and I'm calling on YOU to put your skills to work for an amazing cause.
All proceeds from the campaign will be donated to cover medical costs for KKG and to iCureASPS.

When a tree falls deep in a forest, does it make any sound?
Aokigahara, Mirkwood, the Forbidden Forest, forests North of the Wall... they all contain mysteries that you'd really not like to uncover by yourself. Tell us a story - what have you found in your imagination? A labyrinth, witch's hut on hen's pud, a pond inhabitated by kelpie, a troll, or something much more terrifying and sinister?
You know what your task is. Please remember that this is GrimGloomTale, and not ThrowAnyPileOfTreesIn.
If you feel like doing a research on any of the places mentioned above, please note that Aokigahara forest is a real one and photos found can be really not safe for work.
We've got a special folder for the entries. It can be accessed here. If your submission gets accepted, I will edit
Sell yourself.. but not undersellFound this on tumblr..... and I find it incredibly relevant. Especially since I've been preaching that subject to a few others recently, myself. Though this illustrates it perfectly.Sell yourself.. but not undersell9 months ago in Personal More Like This
I also find it amusing and painfully true, at the mention of the 'DeviantArt mentality'.
If you are looking to make honest money with honest, art/writing work.. don't undersell yourself just because some kids that only get an allowance from their parents think its too much. (And don't get me wrong. I was that myself for a long while. Your perception of money's worth changes -allot- as you grow up though.. so don't tell someone something isnt worth it just because you see something like 100$ as allot.. it is to a younger person with no bills. To me though? that's not even 1/4th of my monthly car payment.. )
Most people trying to make decent money by putting more than decent effort into their work have grownup stuff to pay for.. And better ways to make money than wasting time for even less.
of course that me

Okay, so this isn't exactly a journal entry. But since I can't be bothered to figure out how to post inline images in the commentary section of regular image posts, you're getting this. Deal with it.
In my perpetual state of ultimate lazyness, this image has been bouncing around for a while, and I'm just now getting around to posting it. And I've had a fair number of questions. So, I think I'll take this opportunity to walk you through some of the happy accidents that fill the days of us artists. That's right, Bob Ross may be the only one who owns up to it, but we all have them.
To me, the most important thing in art is making decisions. In fact, you can break my art philosophy into a tidy little three step triad. Observations -> evaluations -> decisions. That's the important stuff. Everything else is just about
Orcs of MaineEveryone's used to politicians badmouthing each other and highlighting flaws in their opponents to try and belittle them in front of the eyes of the public.Orcs of Maine2 years ago in Personal More Like This
In my little corner of the world, things like fraud and corruption regularly bubble to the surface, usually by way of the media. The police investigate and the offending politician is, more often than not, destroyed. Possibly literally, as they're not usually heard from again, but more likely because the parties distance themselves from the offending moron, who was stupid enough to misbehave while the public gaze was upon them.
The parties use incidents like that to discredit their rivals and question their abilities to govern.
Occasionally an irrelevant element of a politician's personal life will crop up as the focus of a jibe, but it's never seen as anything more than that. Using, say, a harmless hobby to try and smear someone in Parliament would be seen as monumentally petty.
"Petty" is not a word American politicians seem to h

A type of Flash Fiction, six word stories are (very) short stories with an exact word count: six words. SixWordStories is the place where, alongside quality, quantity really does matter. Though these stories are so brief in length, they can be as profound, if not more, than the prose and poetry you see and read every day, partly because six word stories can tell us so much and yet contain so little.
As a Group, we encourage writers to explore their boundaries with prompts, collaborations and more, but we accept anyone and everyone too! Whether you are a digital artist, photographer, or something else entirely, if you can string six words together into a story, this is the place to be!
It has been a long time since we have had a contest, but we have some awesome prizes to be won and enough freedom for you to enjoy yourselves too! Pl

The very recent release of The Desolation of Smaug trailer quite inspired this contest's theme. It's just six months to go! Your task in this contest is not simply to draw a character or place from the Middle-earth, that would be just another boring Tolkien competition, wouldn't it?
Fire. Mountain(s). Ruins. Shadow. Flower. Treasure. Couple. Smoke. Lights.
9 words for one quest! Your entry must include at least 3 of these things (and you should mention the ones you've picked in your deviation's description). It must refer to something that actually happened in the Middle-earth or other realms from its dimention described by Tolkien. Entries showing nothing but a character posing like a statue or copied screenshots from the movies won't be accepted, this is
How To Create a GOOD Hetalia OCDudes...I can't even...:iconheaddeskplz:How To Create a GOOD Hetalia OC2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Seriously, people? Making OCs, especially Hetalia ones, is not that hard. All you have to do is not make them a Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu, which is simple in itself. Give them strengths, and give them weaknesses. That's all. Now, I will admit that Hetalia OCs are a bit more challenging to make because (at least if you care) there's history to consider. Sadly, many people do not consider it. Many people end up pairing up their OC with a country solely because the creator loves that country, with no real reason behind it other than that, therefore their pairings are controversially the product of their own ignorance and crack. Another mistake that's made too often is that they end up being paired with/have a relationship with a country that their people despise. Take Greenland, for example. When Danes invaded, they killed, tortured, made sl

The deviation should be dA themed, as this is a birthday contest! For example, you may wish to include Fella, popular emotes, llamas, ninjas etc
You may NOT use the image directly.
Whichever shapes you see in the stock images should be translated as closely as possible in your finished piece. For example, the mountain in my example is the same shape as the wallpaper rip.
Please link to the stock image used and say what part of your image it's used in. For example I used the shape of the wallpa
