Becoming a Verified Safe Stock Resource ProviderEarlier we brought up the importance of providing valid and safe resources as stock providers. We are the front lines, so to speak, on ensuring the quality and validity of our resources. We mentioned in our last blog (which you can read below) about a way to become verified safe stock providers. There was a lot of positive feedback on the idea. The question was how to prevent those who would abuse a stamp from using it.
hyenacub-stock suggested creating an alternate group that only certain members can join as a method for preventing the "posers." EveLivesey suggested the name "Safe Stock" for the project. So, by combining the two ideas, we now have a sister group called Safe-Stock-Resources. I've spent some time this evening fleshing out the group page, and I believe that it's a good start.
Safe-Stock-Resources can be that marker, the seal of approval, on great and trustworthy stock resources. If you would like to become a part of it, let me know, and I will send yo

Yesterday (August 7th) was dA's 13th birthday! To celebrate, a Stock and Resources treasure hunt chat event was held, and now it's time for the photomanipulation challenge!
The idea is to create something with the theme of "13." The way you interpret the theme is up to you.
1. You will be given 3 days to perform the challenge.
2. The challenge ends at 1 PM PST (deviantART/LA time) on Sunday, August 11th. Please submit your challenge entry to the challenge folder
3. Only 1 entry per person which must be submitted to the Digital Art/Photomanipulation category.
4. Entries must include something like, “This is a contest entry for the 13th Birthday Manip Challenge” in the artist's comments to be va
Clarifying an Issue with Stock ResourcesThere appears to be a fair amount of misunderstanding on the subject of stock resources so what I would like to do today is attempt to clarify several issues which are of importance to the artists who generously provide stock resources to the public for use and hopefully dispel the confusion and misinformation which is beginning to circulate.Clarifying an Issue with Stock Resources2 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
The first issue at hand is in regards to your personal stock terms
Your Personal Stock Terms
Officially deviantART maintains only one "automatic" restriction and that is "No Commercial Use" and that particular restriction can easily be overridden by the actual stock provider.

Our interviewees today are faestock, Tasastock, and SenshiStock.
1. Is an expensive camera necessary?
Tasastock says, "No, but they are damned fun to play with! You can get a decent camera for a decent price nowadays that will shoot good quality images in the right conditions. Obviously they're not good for low-light or anything capturing movement, but if you handle them right you can make do with an ordinary camera, I've known plenty of people to do so."
SenshiStock says, "I don't know much about cameras, but the best photographs you can take are always going to be the ones that
Paying it ForwardHiya Darlings,Paying it Forward3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've been moved to try a little experiment with the concept of paying it forward. Below I am creating a list of people who have complete access to my exclusive stock, absolutely free of charge. All they have to do is send me a note telling me which one, any time, with no limit on how many. These people have inspired me, moved me, and helped me along the way with groups and my own growth as an artist/stock provider. This is my way of saying thank you to those people who have been simply wonderful and made the deviantART experience amazingl. Keep in mind that if you aren't listed below, I still you and will still occasionally give away freebies.

Stock Copyright - Shutterstock, iStock vs. DAFirst and foremost, I am not a lawyer. This journal contains my personal understanding of copyright law, terms and conditions for the mentioned websites as it relates to the stock and the artistic community here on DeviantArt (DA).Stock Copyright - Shutterstock, iStock vs. DA2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
However, please feel free to share this journal.
Recently, one of DA’s most active and respected stock users came under fire for using off site (meaning outside DA) stocks in her work. As a “stocker”, I was surprised to hear of this - It was my understanding that this was common practice for artists to do.
It prompted me to look into the matter and dust off the little bit of arts law I studied whilst doing my post grad in Arts Management. (And I will save you the definition of IP law and the fact that copyright stays in effect for about 150 years, give or take a few. If you want to read a bit more about the basics in easy to und
STOCK CONTEST - INSPIRATIONG'day folks,STOCK CONTEST - INSPIRATION3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I am two days over due, but here it is. A contest ONLY for stock!
The theme is 'Inspiration'
And I can hear some of you already going... "What the??? That is a bit BROAD!"
Well there is a twist.
You need to find inspiration from another stock artist.
The idea of this is to push you outside of your comfort zone and create an stock image (or series) that you never thought you would create.
Which other stock artist do you watch and go "Wow!", I wish I could be more like them?
To be clear, this is not having you re-create their image/ series. It is about you taking inspiration from that series and putting your own spin on it
I've done it personally quite a number of times...

Problem with stock artistsI don't know if discussing this here will help at all but I do hope at least some stock artists see this.Problem with stock artists3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Ever since I started doing book covers for authors, I have had to consider one more thing to look for in the stock rules, available for commercial use or not. Some stock providers say it is OK, some say you have to ask them first and others don't say anything. In cases of background stock, there is always an option to look for other stock images. When it comes to models, the characters on the covers have to be very precise so finding the right model is very difficult. So once I find the right one, I try to work it with the model as much as I can. In my one year of doing this, I have had several instances where the stock artists never got back to me or did that very late (a month or more). Now you don't expect the client to wait for that long for you so these replies are really no good after so long. I have also had an instance with one of the biggest and best stock providers on dA
Self Portrait Challenge!Ok, so this is kinda linking back with something I thought about doing aages ago. But the main idea came from talking with some of you lovely people and the comments from this journal here: http://fav.me/d61xe9iSelf Portrait Challenge!3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
The power of self-perception, and the confidence (or lack thereof) you gain from it, does affect how you act and the choices you make in your life. And no I'm not talking about the whole "you are beautiful" thing so much as, how you see and percieve yourself. How we see ourselves is completely different to how other people see us.
I do notice this a lot, being a stock artist and having lots of artists draw me. One was worried that I'd be offended that he drew my legs a little large or something like that. Hell, doesn't bother me. Draw me as you see me, as how you percieve me, as how you want your art to turn out. The rest is superfluous really, since I play a character in my stock sets and none of them are really set as a piece to show me as well, me.
So that's my idea. Kinda l
Daily Deviation Suggestion Drive!Back By Popular Demand!Daily Deviation Suggestion Drive!3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
In January of 2012, the community was challenged by thorns to do something about their complaints on dA. Thus was born this very group! But before the group, it was just a fledgling idea on LiliWrites's account that began with a DD Suggestion Contest. The results of that contest were overwhelming. And so, under the prodding of quite a few Community Volunteers, we're going to do it again!
UPDATE: Less than 1 week in and we've already got 100 suggested DDs and 2 accepted suggestions!! Keep up the great work guys and gals. Please remember that you need to leave a link to every deviation you suggest in this journa
Single Stock Challenge - Ends in a few days hurry!Hello from the admins of TheArtOfManipulation! It's time for a new Contest and this one is going to be BIG!Single Stock Challenge - Ends in a few days hurry!3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
How it Will Work
For this contest, we are going to make things TOUGH. We will provide you with a list of stockers that you can choose from, however you only get to choose ONE stock artist and you must use all stock from that artist. And to make things even harder, you cannot use any human models, premade backgrounds, PNG cut-outs, or brushes (except the preset ones located in your software already). Also you MUST use a minimum of 3 stock images, there is no maximum
Must be a member of TheArtOfManipulation in order to submit to the contest folder, make sure you read the rules and answer the 3 questions to join the group!
Your entry MUST be a PHOTOMANIPULATION. That means it involves 2 or more (in this case 3 or more

PE Daily Deviations- Presentation of your workHello all!PE Daily Deviations- Presentation of your work3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Well we’ve had a fascinating week so far; a week which hopefully has provided some insight not only to the process of DD selection but helped you understand what we look for in DDs as CVs. As we draw to the end of this week, I bring you an article which will whet your Saturday with thoughts that don’t just apply to the DD feature, but something which should be a consideration to everything you submit to dA. I am talking about deviation presentation.
Why is Presentation important?
Art isn’t always about just being “creative”. There are techniques and skills which develop over time which contribute to the quality of the work you produce and alongside this comes a developed understanding of good presentation.
Good presentation could be anything from cropping a photograph, to spell checking your literature. These are common sense things that in the rush of wanting to show off your creativity can sometimes be

As you all can read in the description of the Magazine Concept, I was looking for a challenge that could contribute to my personal portfolio. As a member of the deviantart stock community, I didn't have to think long or hard to figure out a subject for this project.
As in normal life, a magazine is compiled, designed and edited by teams of people with a various set of skills. As for this project... I can't do it all alone. This magazine is going to be (or I hope it will) a huge collaboration between me, the whole DA community (with any relation to stock) and deviantART itself!
English is not my main language, but I do alright, for online communities, I guess. At writing journalistic, editorial stuff, I know I can not compete with native English writers. Also the amount of written content in a magazine would be too much for one person to write in a considerable amount of time.
That's where I would like to call in the help of
CONTEST EXTENDED A WEEK*EDIT* Woohoo!! We have some entries!!CONTEST EXTENDED A WEEK2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Hello everyone!! It's been a while since I last held a stock challenge for stock artists but in the spirit of the new year here you go.
What if a mirror isn't all it seems. What if your reflection wants to keep you on your side? What if you are able to climb through a mirror but your reflection keeps standing in front of you, blocking your way? You try to touch the mirror without your reflection touching the same place. Maybe the cold surface isn't the mirror you're touching, but the cold flesh of your doppelganger, pushing back, keeping you on your side.
The theme is 'Through the Mirror'

Texture Your World ContestTell us the story of your world in textures!Texture Your World Contest3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
We are surrounded 24 hours a day by objects that have texture, they may be smooth or bobbly, old or new, bold, bright, shiny or dull. You might see a texture every day and never notice it until you start looking. Do you sit at a desk that's textured, or pass an interesting tree on the way to work or school?
We want you, in the form of a triptych (thats 3 images forming a larger image see example here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triptych ) to tell us the story of your textured world. Each individual texture should stand on its own, both as a useful resource and as a cohesive part of the whole story. What story you tell through your texture triptych is up to you - but they must be textures that tell a story of your world in some way.
There are 3 categories for this contest, each of which you can submit to twice.

Know your Basics - TexturesThere are a lot of tutorials out there on how to create / photograph texture as well as how to use them on a technical level, but the question of why and when to use textures is rarely touched. This article wants to fill that gap and therefore looks at texures from a slightly different perspective.Know your Basics - Textures3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Textures in Manips as you know them
For a photomanipulator, the first thing that comes to mind when hearing the word "texture" are images that can be used in soft light or overlay mode to texture a manipulation or parts thereof. What most manipulators therefore have in mind, are images like the following:
Beautiful textures, sure, and useful, too, but have you ever thought of doing more with them than the aforementioned overlays? And have you ever considered using other kinds of textures, too?

Stock and Resources: Policy ClarificationThe Stock and Resources community is an integral part of deviantART, both for having an active community of its own as well as providing high quality stock to all deviants.Stock and Resources: Policy Clarification3 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
As this community has grown so much over the years, so has the amount of invalid stock and resources that have been provided by some deviants. The Stock and Resources community feels like this reflects negatively on them, the volunteers have a hard time trying to teach people about valid stock and how to use it correctly, and it gives an appearance that deviantART Staff tolerate so-called “art theft” or copyright infringement.
In this article our aim is to reinforce our policies regarding stock and stock use and clear up some misconceptions.
Stock and Resource submissions to deviantART:
What are Invalid Stock and Resources?
In short, invalid stock or resources are anything which you do not have full permission to upload. This incl
