Character concept from an art test I did a while back, for a company that will remain unnamed, right before I got the job at Kixeye. This one was all about the silhouette, but I also tried a new method of mixing colored lineart and paint, which worked out well enough that I'd like to try it again.
The Black Knights are a CITY of HEROES villain group that premiered with the new Night Ward zone in Issue 23.
In doing the concept, I had two key goals: 1. Figure out a series of armor layers that together could cover the whole villain group, from scrubs to bosses AND
2. simultaneously make sure the assets could work on the player models. With the original Medieval set woefully out-of-date and never that historically accurate to begin with, we really wanted to use this opportunity to address those problems and give players something worthy of the era
Definitely a lot of things to accomplish in just one model, but I think we got it right.
Some 'lost' art from the Paragon Studios archives--here's a glimpse of what might have been had the game continued. Skeletal Armor was slated to be the 2nd top tier reward for players after Celestial Armor, but following a shift in 3D artists, the project was put on hold (in favor of Elemental-themed armor). The silhouette here is aggressive and unique, and the weapons are primal and brutal. Would've been pretty sweet, and something different for the game, but alas.

Concept art for War Commander's new Shock Trooper--one of 3 brand new Prize Units that players could get for participating in the Operation: High Voltage event. Didn't think I'd be able to show KIXEYE work so quickly, but I'm delighted to have the chance.

Awesome, because now I can show you the Missile Cruiser concepts I did for the event--these are 2 of the 3 brand new Prize Units that you can get for participating. Didn't think I'd be able to show KIXEYE work so quickly, but I'm delighted to have the chance.

As seen in the pages of PC Gamer magazine and our own Ustream casts, this is the Circle of Thorns concept I created as part of COH FREEDOM.
Whether or not you liked the original version of the group, they had a few artistic issues to overcome, including lowres textures from 2004 and a high degree of repetition among enemy types. And subjectively, they also had a "low-rent" and unthreatening sort of vibe, which might work for a low level villain group but becomes increasingly problematic as one's level goes up.
This new take cast the group as significantly better equipped and more formally dressed. ...and also more dangerous. 'Circle' and 'thorn' motifs abound, and the old burlap/plain cloth has given way to intimidating pointed forms throughout. Luxurious, textural fabrics (patterned snakeskin and dense filigree) befitting a group of high-powered mages help to complete the visual, and we can tell at a glance that the Circle has evolved into a bigger threat.
Another key hero unit from our MOBA project, Taker rounded out the roster even further, adding horror and the undead as visual options for you to choose from. We wanted to have a character that might look at home in the Warhammer universe (hence the elaborate and out-sized armor), but to put our own spin on it as well.
