OCT 101 (2012) EDITDisclaimer: this is not a personal attack against any OCT's, oct admins, or conduct of oct admin teams in general. These are observations, thoughts, and tips that I felt should be taken into consideration when one decides they want to run an OCT in hopes that it makes things a little easier for people.
FURTHER DISCLAIMER: every oct is different, someone doing things differently from the norm is not bad. These are all merely tools and guidelines meant to help. I've heard a lot about personal attacks being made using both my posts about OCT's as a way of bullying and pushing around the admins of other Tournament groups, and I do not condone it in the slightest. I'd like to apologize for anyone that has had that done to them.
For those who need more information!

What Makes a Good AuditionThis is a guide to writing for OCTs. Every medium and genre of writing is unique and should be approached in a different way, but if you keep the following things in mind when you write for OCTs your audition and character will come across much stronger and be more likely considered for a roster position. What Makes a Good Audition6 years ago in Writing More Like This
Judges and your general audience alike are typically looking for three major factors when they read your audition: Interesting Characters, A Unique Plot, and Clarity of Storytelling. If your audition does not excel in at least one of these areas you will almost certainly be looked over when it comes time for judging no matter how slick and professional your art is.
I firmly believe that there is no such thing as a bad character. Any character, if presented well, can be interesting--be they Human, alien, psychotic, or cliché.
The trick you need to employ is treating the character in a way that supp

Yin's Opinion on Pokemon X and YNote: Kinda rushed through this, so sorry in advance for all the grammatical errors. Will be editing throughout the day.Yin's Opinion on Pokemon X and Y3 years ago in Personal More Like This
It's been a couple days since Pokemon X and Y were first revealed to the masses. And while many people were upset about the lack of a Ruby/Sapphire remake, reception has been overall positive. Now that the first day hype is behind us and things have more or less settled down, I'd finally like to give my opinion on the matter while also addressing some of the major complaints about the new games.
I'll start off by saying that I'm incredibly stoked. I've been wanting a fully 3D pokemon game since before Pokemon Black and White, and we've finally got it! True, the cute, little sprites will be dearly missed, but like with every popular franchise, it's time to evolve with the times. Pun intended.
Anyway, let's begin with the starters. There are plenty of mixed feeling about these guys, but I didn't find them nearly as disappointing as the Sinnoh trio, who I still f

ファイナルファンタジー ポケギアン ミトス
Hello PPal! I've wanted to hold a themed mini-event and I mentioned it to Wasil who suggested to me that Final Fantasy classes would be an awesome theme to do. So here we are!
If you have any queries about the event at all, please contact me, kishi-san.
WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO:
Draw a FULLBODY image of your character as they would appear as a character in a Final Fantasy Pokegea AU. You will also need to place the FINAL FANTASY POKEGEAN MYTHOS logo to the bottom right of your submission. To sign up, read the journal and comment on it with your character's name and chosen FF job class. When you have completed your picture, comment with your character's name and a
Yin's Tradelocke RulesetThis is a nuzlocke rule system I came up with awhile back, but never bothered to write down. It's basically a variation of the popular dual-locke with more emphasis on collaborative play.Yin's Tradelocke Ruleset2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Okay! First step, find a friend who loves Pokemon and nuzlockes as much as you do.
Got one? Good! Moving on~
You and your friend will need:
A Nintendo handheld system
Compatible Pokemon games (e.g. Platinum & SoulSilver, Black 2 & White, etc.)
A method of trading (link cable, IR, wi-fi, etc.)
Standard nuzlocke rules apply:
Catch only the first pokemon on each route, cave, ocean, etc.
If a pokemon faints, it's dead.
As far as additional rules go, it doesn't matter what you use as long as you and your partner use the same ones.
Now, onto the tradelocke rules:
After every 2 badges, the trainers must pick 3 pokemon to battle each other.
Winner gets to pick one of the opponent's 3 p

Recap on rules-Anyone can do it. All you have to do is draw your favorite Electric type Pokemon (i'd prefer it be colored), with white/no background. Traditional and Digital are both awesome (but if traditional, make the lineart visible). When you're done just give me a link and you're good! Its okay if two or more people draw the same pokemon! You are allowed to draw multiple pokemon.
You have until the end of January (and a few extra days if you need because i started late this month hurr)
Here is a list of Pokemon that have not yet been drawn, in case you were wondering

OCT RealizationsUpon scrambling to get through the judging of round one of DeviantDead last night, I realized some common shortcomings that I feel people should pay mind to. Not to say everyone didn't put in a fantastic effort and make some really great stuff, but these are the things that wear me down and make me cranky and tired to be wading through a pile of comics at midnight when I should be sleeping before I go to work.OCT Realizations6 years ago in Personal More Like This
1) GET TO THE POINT
I will readily admit that if I get to the fifth page of a comic and nothing terribly gripping has happened yet, I'm inclined to not read the rest of the comic. I know pacing and character exposé are a huge thing to worry about, but characters can talk and give us some insight into the kind of people they are while they move around and push the story forward. If you dawdle, you're just wasting everybody's time with the pile of extra work you made for yourself.
2) MIND YOUR OPPONENT
OCTs are not one-way street. If you want to draw a comic ab
Imagination, Inspiration, and CurationAs deviants, we are serious about our craft, hobbyist or professional. We study hard to become better at what we do. There are many great tutorials here and elsewhere on these kinds of craft based skills and techniques. However, sometimes all that serious study and hard work gets in the way of our imagination. Therefore, it is important to remember to establish a wonder filled mindset, actively seek out inspiration, and curate a library of inspiring content to reference in the future. This article explores some ways to do these three things, and I encourage you to comment and share even more tips on this for other deviants!Imagination, Inspiration, and Curation2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Inviting the Mind of a Child
“The point is to develop the childlike inclination for play.”-Albert Einstein
The biggest part of imagination is playing the part of Peter Pan. You might be 99 or you might be 12, but it is often important to imagination to be in the head space of a 5-7 year old. I

End, you old nut, what in blazes are you going on about? Off your medication again? Nah, I'm talking about the majority of Original Character Tournaments (OCT) here on DA. The fact that there is a glut of such things isn't what's bothering me either.
It's what some people are choosing to do with these tournaments that is just driving an icepick into my eye.
Here, let me impart this to you. Come closer. Do you want to know the secret to making an awesome artistic tournament? Okay.
SIMPLICITY. OH MY GOD. SAY IT WITH ME. SIMPLICITY SIMPLICITY SIMPLICITY.
This is what makes an OCT run smoothly. Simplicity. It is all you need to complement an interesting premise that makes people actively want to participate with their characters. You do NOT need a shit ton of gimmicks to make your contest mor
My friends need your help! Some of you who have followed me in the past may know about this wonderful little zoo called The Wildlife Learning Center. WLC cares for a few dozen wild and exotic animals and treats them as "ambassadors" to help teach the public about wildlife conservation. What is so wonderful about WLC, is that many of the animals in there care are rescues. Many were illegally kept as pets and were either turned over or turned in to WLC for proper care. Others were animals born in the wild, but injury or acclimation to humans kept them from being able to survive in their natural habitats. Still others were exotic pets who grew too large or otherwise difficult to care for by their original owners. Without WLC, all of these rescued animals would be seriously ill or dead.My friends need your help!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Besides offering animals topnotch care, WLC is an amazing place to visit. This zoo is small, so visitors get to see the animals more up close and intimately than larger zoos. Even

1) 2D 'Traditional Animation'
This can come in a variety of different forms. Mostly they start with a 'pencil test' which is paper, pencils and pegbars. These are then studied and scrutinised and thrown away until correct.
In olden times these were then sent to the Ink and Paint department (usually full of women) who systematically inked and painted the cels by hand.
This method was widely used up until the 1990s!
After the 1990s many studios started to use computers to do all the colouring work! Disney developed its CAPS system and used it from The Rescuers Down Under (1990) till The Little Matchgirl (2006) when they stopped using it. Since then
5 reasons why comments are really awesomeAs time passes here it seems people comment less. I suspect it has something to do with this community growing so unbelievably huge and everyone just feels like a tiny blip on the radar- but it makes me sad. Really very sad. Because comments are awesome and everyone should have an over-abundance of them. I know I can't change everyone's mind on the matter, but I really want to make a difference in the community as far as communication goes.5 reasons why comments are really awesome3 years ago in Personal More Like This
So, here is five reasons why you (yes, you) should comment MOAR!
1. It lets the artist know what they're doing right.
Who cares if a dozen people say the same thing. It shouldn't give you a reason to feel silenced. If an artist hears the same thing over and over it reaffirms that they did something well, and to keep on that track.
2. It's personal. It lets the artist know you're really looking.
There's nothing I love more than hearing what goes on inside someone's head when they see my stuff. Simple or not, it mean
PE: Getting Noticed in dAGetting noticed within dAPE: Getting Noticed in dA3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Everyday, millions of users from all over the world use deviantART, and it is really hard for new users to get themselves noticed. Oh yes, it is HARD. It can actually be a really disappointing experience for some of us. But, if you show some patience and work for it, you may just be able to crack through that wall standing between you and exposure to the community. Remember, all it take is patience. Lots and lots of patience. Oh, and you also need to trust yourself. Just because you couldn't get a huge fan base in several weeks or months doesn't mean that you will never get them. But, there are some really important stuff you need to follow first before getting there.
dA is also a community, just like any other community in the world. The only difference is that dA is an online community and the others, well they are totally offline . So, this means there will be some standards to be held in there, or else

No professional position, aside from perhaps police officer and horny pizza delivery boy, is more frequently misrepresented in film than archaeologist. In movies, archaeologists are all dashing figures, risking life and limb in the pursuit of knowledge while arcane artifacts and ancient traps besiege their efforts. Or else they're perpetually opening sealed, cursed tombs and stumbling into the haunted caves of unspeakable evils in the name of science. But in reality, we all know archaeology is nothing like that. Obviously.
It's way more terrifying.
#7. The Screaming Mummies

My position on Gay marriage and AdoptionMy position on Gay marriage and Adoption3 years ago in Personal More Like This
WARNING: This journal is about the Gay marriage. If you do not wish to know or hear my opinion, please do not read.
So today in France was a march against a law that the government wants to create, the "Marriage for everyone". The marchers are putting together that "Marriage for everyone" is going to lead to Adoption for everyone, which would "destroy" the human race and would be against the happiness and well being of the child.
They are saying that a child needs a father and a mother, that otherwise it would be against nature.
I am for Gay marriage. Not in church, obviously, because religion and homosexuality will never agree with each other and I don't see why the church would accept marrying two same sex persons.
But I believe that we are all equal and therefore deserve the same right. In France, there's a thing called PACS, it's like a contract you sign with another person that gives you pretty much almost all the same rights you'd get from getting married with such person
