Everlasting Snow: Chapter 19
It feels as though you have a breath mint resting on your lips.
At first, you’re shocked. You don’t know what to do. What the heck is happening? You don’t resist, but you just stand there, motionless.
The subtle scent of pine trees hypnotizes you and you give in, becoming less rigid and holding yourself closer to him. You close your eyes as well. You soon find yourself lost in the odd yet wonderful sensations provided by the kiss.
It’s surprisingly warm. Cold, yes, but the soft warmth that lies beneath his touch is stronger in this intimate act. The outer coldness makes him taste slightly minty, making your lips tingle oh so slightly. The kiss is as soft as snow falling gently on your face.
You feel so safe in his arms, enveloped in his embrace, his body held tightly against your own. You forget entirely about the dark surroundings, lost in his inner light. Your heart is racing. You can feel his own beating just as hard.
He slowly breaks the kiss, reopening his

Your heart begins to race.
You nearly knock over a hat stand in your rush to it. Why are you even worrying? It’s not like the store is going anywhere or that there’s anyone else in this store to nab it before you do. Nevertheless, you don’t slow down until you’ve come up it.
It’s even better up close. You reach out your hand and grab the cuff of the sleeve.
So soft. Cotton. Thick and warm. Beyond comfortable.
Just his size.
A blue hoodie.
It’s a wonderful shade of blue, not too dark, not too light. It just screams “Winter.” Dark blue thread runs in detail stitching from each of the two top corners of the pocket to the armpit and down the side seams, forming a semi-distorted rectangle, the top line probably following along the slant of the ribcage when worn. The same is done in symmetry on the back—minus the slant—the two lines meeting towards the center at the edge a little over an inch from each other. The shoelace-like tasse

Once again, you find yourself in flight.
Without hesitation, Jack had snatched up your hand and leapt into the air, taking you with him. With the wind at your backs, the two of you shot off your porch and in the direction that the black wisp had disappeared off into.
You’d be enjoying it a lot more if you weren’t scared out of your mind. What is it that you’re chasing? What would you find when you caught up to it, if you did? You can’t shake the ominous feeling as it sits in the pit of your stomach, weighing you down as you zip through the sky.
Jack’s head is darting from left to right in search of any sign of your target. You stop on a rooftop as he scans the area, squinting slightly.
“Aha! There!” He points and takes your hand again, a new flurry of wind enveloping you. You have no idea what he’s talking about. You can’t see a single blip of black moving anywhere amongst the houses.
Jack’s brow is furrowed as he conce

He whirls around, staff at the ready.
A stream of ice whizzes by to your left, narrowly missing you and whatever it is that is carrying you.
Jack takes to the air and chases after you, firing at your kidnapper at windows of opportunity. As the trees get thicker and the forest darker, he calls out your name and you call back in hopes of keeping track of one another.
He’s starting to lose you. You can now only catch glimpses of snow-white hair here and blue-glowing staff there in the darkness, his calls getting more and more distant.
Soon, you see nothing at all besides barely-visible tree trunks.
“Jack?” you call out the best that you can. “JACK?!?”
You begin to panic even more. Where are you being taken? What is going to be done to you? You struggle against the hold on your collar, reaching up to maybe pry apart the grip of whatever is carrying you away.
Your hand meets cold sand.
The creature snorts—much like your average horse

You have odd dreams that night.
At first, you don’t even dream at all. At least, not that you can remember.
Then you have good dreams. Dreams about snow and flying, dreams filled with wondrous adventure and things straight out of a storybook. You find yourself skating once again on the beautiful lake, alone save for the trees and snow.
But then you hear a crack.
Your dream-self screams as you fall into the ice-cold water. You try to swim back up to the surface, but find yourself only sinking further into its dark depths, the subzero water paralyzing you. You can’t hold your breath any longer. Your chest feels like it is collapsing on itself. Bubbles escape from your mouth as your lungs make a fruitless effort in their search for oxygen.
You hear Pitch’s low, dry laughter surround you.
Your vision is getting blurry. You still try to hold your breath to prevent more water from making its way into your lungs, hoping that maybe, just maybe, something will happen and you w

The radio on your alarm clock switches on, telling you that it’s time to get up.
“…traffic on the freeways is close to heavenly. Light snow expected all throughout today, folks,” the radio host tells you. “It’s going to be a White Christmas!”
Wait. You didn’t set your alarm.
“And now back to the music! This next one’s for all you sleepyheads out there who are STILL IN BED THIS LATE ON CHRISTMAS MORNING.”
Wow, that radio is loud. It’s as if the host is in your bedroom, yelling right at you.
Eyes still closed and wanting to sleep in longer since you didn’t get much last night, you halfheartedly reach up your hand, feeling for the snooze button on the clock.
Your hand meets something soft and fuzzy.
You slowly open your eyes. Since when is your clock fuzzy?
Jack Frost is there crouching at your bedside, a huge smile across his face. He’s wearing a Santa hat, on top of which you currently have your hand re

You’re screaming at the top of your lungs.
You had no idea that a storage bin lid on snow could travel so quickly.
Still facing backwards, you and your lid take a sudden right turn, narrowly missing what could have been a very gnarly crash into your neighbor’s house. You have a death grip on the edges of your “sled,” trying to turn around and avoid a trip to the hospital. You’re going way too fast for you to just put your legs out to stop yourself or to just bail. Nope, you’re stuck where you are.
All of a sudden, you feel a blast of cold wind.
Jack Frost is there, following you, flying parallel to the ground, his face only inches from yours as you continue to sled.
“Miss me?” He jokes, smiling widely.
Forgetting your predicament, you focus on him, lightly blushing from his proximity. “Where did you go?” you yell over the wind.
He jerks his head over you as if indicating something up ahead (or rather, behind you).

A small dose of medicine and glass of water greet you as you open your eyes. The tray has been cleared of your dishes since you dozed off.
Still half-asleep, you prop yourself up just enough to take the medicine, laying back down immediately afterwards. Your nose isn’t bothering you as much, but you’re still feeling pretty weak and sickly.
You don’t even question how he managed to find the medicine.
You look over to the fireplace to see nothing but the fire dancing happily about. You scan around the room, trying to place where he may have gone off to so you can thank him for taking care of you.
Ah, there he is.
He’s standing in front of the window, leaning slightly onto the small sill and staring out into the city, not noticing that you have woken up.
No, not the city, you notice. His chin is slightly elevated. He’s staring up into the midday sky.
“Why?” you hear him quietly ask it. “Why won’t you talk to me? Tell me what

“In the pale echo of light, vague outlines moved through Bertie’s field of vision, but their details were lost to the dark. Her bedroom walls took flight in a soaring arc before…”
You trail off, holding your place on the page.
He’s not awake anymore.
His breathing has slowed significantly, his arms limp and his heartbeat now a slow, steadily-beating drum.
What’s more is that he has stopped interrupting you to ask a question or make a snide comment every few lines of the story.
After sharing in that kiss, you had thrown away the wrapping paper—all except the stuff that covered Jack’s—and tidied the room up a little. Somewhere in there, Jack revealed that he was in fact the one who brought and decorated the gorgeous tree sitting in your living room. In helping you clean, Jack had taken interest in another book, one of your absolute favorites. Blushing slightly, he had asked you to read it aloud to him. You had poked fun at him, askin

At least, you’re pretty sure the man standing before you is Santa.
He’s dressed quite differently than in all the fairy tales and legends.
Looks a bit different, too.
He has maintained the basic facial features of the myths. You know, the jolly red cheeks that are round as apples and pink-tipped nose. He has piercing, clear blue eyes that sparkle with an inner light.
This is when he starts really differing from the Santa of stories. His eyes sit beneath a pair of extremely thick black eyebrows that are accented with a lighter grey here and there, the hair becoming longer at the curve, flaring up and out like the flames of a fire, giving the illusion that his eyes are opened wider than they really are.
Blond and dark grey highlights streak his otherwise white beard and whiskers, which stretch down to the end of his chest. The tips of the hair brush the top of a thick sash-like belt that has a pattern that matches the ones on the stained glass windows and found all aro

And yet, warm.
You’re woken up by this exceptional sensation sprawling across your forehead. Jack is standing above you, his left hand on your head as he checks your temperature.
“What’s the story, morning glory?” he says, smiling. He lifts his hand from your brow. “You’re warm.”
Feeling much better—though still not 100%—you shoot him a “no duh, I’m going to feel warm to you” look. He laughs in response. “You look a lot better. Here, I made you this. Drink up.”
In his oven mitt-ed right hand he holds a mug of (your favorite hot drink).
Your comforter draped around your shoulders, you sit up and take the piping hot beverage from him, wrapping your hands around it. He goes and sits down in the middle of the room, looking around and occasionally back to you as you sip away. The only sounds are that of the fire popping and sputtering in the fireplace.
You notice that your book is closed and sit

It’s your turn to be a deer in the headlights.
You should turn away, but you’re completely frozen. Stuck. Hypnotized. Captivated.
“I can’t wait. I’m going to put it on now!” he had exclaimed after releasing you from the hug.
You had thought that he meant he was going to go to a different room to change.
And then that maybe he’d at least keep on the white shirt and put your Christmas present to him on over that.
But no. He had literally meant putting the blue hoodie on in that very moment. In that room. Right in front of you. And to change into just the hoodie.
I guess you somewhat forget how to act in front of people and proper social behavior a little if you go unseen for centuries.
You secretly don't mind it.
His old shirt and brown vest lie forgotten on the floor amongst the crumpled wrapping paper. His cloak is carelessly thrown over the closest arm of the couch. You’re holding the Santa hat, which he had tossed

You stand there for a few minutes in complete shock.
It looks like a tornado has hit your kitchen.
After you told Jack your name and watched him fly off into the distance, you closed the door and leaned against it, smiling widely for reasons that you couldn’t quite figure out. Needing something to preoccupy yourself with while you waited for his return, you caught sight of your dirty mug and figured that you should wash it. So off you went to your kitchen.
And that’s when you saw the chaos lying in wait for you.
Dishes are piled high in the sink. Unused tools are put away without care. Drawers are half-open because they were too full with untidiness to shut properly. Pots and pans galore are stacked on the stove. Ingredients dot the countertops. Plates and bowls are set up in a line as if he had spent quite some time deciding which one to put your food on.
How could someone make such a gigantic mess in making one measly dish??
I guess he only learned how to cook i

Your feet begin to get very cold.
You look down at them. Your toes are a deep pink from contact with the icy snow. You scrunch them up and unfurl them again, getting the blood flowing. You wiggle them, enjoying the sensation of the snow getting caught between them and falling off again. You smile to yourself, feeling completely like a kid.
You then realize something.
Your feet are bare.
If he’s going to have you ice skate, how is Jack expecting you to do so without any…well…skates?
“Here we go!” you hear Jack say. You direct your attention to him. He gets up and turns around, smiling wide, obviously wholly satisfied with himself. Staff in one hand, he’s holding something out to you using the thumb and first two fingers of the other. “All done!”
No way, you think.
You walk towards him to get a better look.
Your jaw drops. Your eyes weren’t playing tricks on you.
He’s proudly handing you a pair of ice skates. But these

For: (your name).
From: Jack Frost.
And a tiny drawing of a snowflake beside his name to complete his signature.
The tag—made of thick eggshell-white cardstock with a border of miniscule spindles of real frost—is captivating in itself.
It’s a small, semi-rectangular package, no larger than four inches long and three inches wide. It is wrapped carefully in snow-white wrapping paper with clear snowflakes decorating it, only visible as light reflects off of them, giving them life. A silk silver ribbon snugly embraces the package, ending in a small matching bow in the upper left-hand corner.
You turn to face Jack once again.
“How did you get the wrapping paper and stuff…?” you ask, entirely curious as to how an invisible spirit of winter can get his hands on material items.
He shrugs. “Found them in places where they wouldn’t be missed, then tweaked them a bit to give them my own personal flare. I used your tape.”

It’s like he’s never seen a Christmas present before.
He’s standing there, hands now at his sides, staring at the gift like a deer in the headlights.
You hand it to him, but he doesn’t move a muscle.
His gaze shifts from the beautiful packaging to you, his eyes locking on yours.
“You really didn’t have to.”
“Just open it already,” you insist, shoving the present at him. You’re smiling wide. You can’t wait to see his face when he sees what it is.
Behind the excitement lies the small amount of worry that comes with any gift-giving. What if he doesn’t like it? What if it doesn’t fit? What if…?
You push the doubt away as he cautiously takes the gift from you. Giving you a final reprimanding look, he begins to unwrap it.
After the first tear, he seems to throw all reservation into the wind. A huge smile sprawls across his face. He carelessly tosses the scraps to the floor.
You giggle. You’d be

Clink. Clank. Psssshhhhhh. Pop. Shuffle.
You lay on your couch, listening to the sounds of Jack rummaging through your kitchen as he whips up your breakfast, opening and closing just about every drawer and cabinet in search of the right tools. You haven’t heard anything break yet, which gives you a small amount of comfort.
No smoke or explosions, either. That’s always a good sign.
The smell of delicious food soon makes its way down from the kitchen and into your nose, encircling you. You take a long, deep breath, your stomach growling in response. Your mouth begins to water.
You hear a pause in the symphony of kitchen commotion. Jack enters the living room and sets up a tray next to you, just as you once did for him.
He doesn’t have his cloak on. He must have taken it off so it didn’t get in the way as he cooked.
“Almost ready,” he reports.
He flashes you a winning smile on his way out. You feel yourself blush, burying your face in your comfor

Warm, furry, feathery, and sandy.
You embrace each of the Guardians in turn, bidding them farewell.
You can see the worry behind each of their eyes, especially Tooth’s.
Jangle hugs the bottom of your leg, his stout arms almost too short to reach all the way around. You laugh and crouch down and pat his head, fearing that you’d squish the little guy if you were to actually return the hug.
You give a final wave as you follow Jack—your hand in his—outside into the arctic weather.
Just as you’re about to lift off, North runs out behind the two of you, yelling, “Wait wait wait!”
The two of you turn to face him.
After he recovers his breath, he holds out another snow globe in the palm of his hand.
“I hhhave better idea,” he says.
Jack holds up his hand, shaking his head. “Thanks, but no thanks. Fun as magic portals are, we don’t need that. Nothing’s going to happen to us on the way back, so you can stop worrying.”

That’s all that you can manage to think as the wind pushes at your back and a bit from below you, hurling you through the air at a fantastic speed.
You must look like nothing but a little moving speck in the sky to the people on the ground.
Jack is laughing and flying beside you, enjoying every moment of the flight. He glances back at you a couple times, giving you an “isn’t this fun?” sort of look.
As if by instinct, you have your arms extended for balance, legs slightly apart. You have a death grip on Jack’s hand, though. You’re surprised that he hasn’t let go or told you to loosen up—you’ve gotta be hurting him. You slowly grow used to the feeling of flying. You begin to take in the snow-covered scenery below you as it zips by, looking as far left and right as you dare.
It’s even better than having the window seat on an airplane.

The Easter Bunny.
The Tooth Fairy.
They’re all there, looking at you excitedly.
Well, except the Easter Bunny. Bunny, you remember he’s called. He’s standing there with his furry arms crossed, an apprehensive look on his face, glancing at you from the corner of his eyes.
He’s almost nothing like how you pictured the Easter Bunny to look. Sure, you had once pictured a larger-than-life rabbit. And boy, is Bunny tall. Just over six feet, you’d say, not counting his long silvery-blue ears. He’s a rabbit, that’s for sure. The fur on his cheeks is long and brushed back, sticking out to the sides. Black fur patterns his forehead, forming what you make out to be three leaves on his brow. He has jet-black eyebrows and springtime-green eyes that are teeming with life. His hair grows longer on his shoulders and middle of his chest, as well as on his knees, reminding you of a wolf’s coat. The layers in this hair are a mix of black, silve

“More snow expected all throughout today in (your town’s name),” the weather(man/woman) announces. “Wind gusts of up to 30mph will hit today, too. Be sure to bundle up and be careful out on those roads!”
You smirk ever so slightly at the meteorologist’s precautions, losing interest in the news as it goes from the weather to the main news anchors. You take another bite of cereal as you stare outside the nearby window at the snow and grey clouds that cannot wait to unload more.
There’s frost on that window, too.
Nothing like the one on your bedroom window, of course. This one’s more plain. Wondrous, like any act of nature, but still nothing like the art embroidering the bedroom’s view.
Nevertheless, curiosity gets the best of you and you get up to examine it, secretly wondering if there’s any little tiny design in it that you’re missing. You go over each part closely. Somewhat to your disappointment, you find nothing out o

You slowly open your eyes.
“Hello there. Long time no see.”
Your little elven friend in teal smiles in response, his hat jingling with emotion.
He steps back a little as you swing your legs over the side of the bed, yawning.
You look around the room, concluding from your surroundings—and the elf—that you must be back at the North Pole.
You walk up to the open window, slipping on the thick, soft red robe that your friend held out to you. He stands beside you as you gaze out upon the scenery.
Even in times of trouble, the world can be so peaceful.
The sun is setting behind the mountains, casting a beautifully mysterious golden light upon the land. Old Man Winter. Jokul Frosti. Father Frost. Spirit of Winter.
Jack Frost is standing before you. The spirit of myth upon myth is in your living room, staring happily at you, arms crossed.
He’s not just a myth after all, you think to yourself. There’s no way this is a hallucination. No amount of rubbing your eyes and blinking can make this go away. You pinch yourself. This is real. You begin to feel lightheaded and slink down to the floor, sitting Indian-style and staring at the carpet.
The fantasy from your books that you always get lost in has finally come to be a reality. You’re in your own fiction story, now.
It’s not nearly how you had expected it to be. In fact, you never expected your wishes for a fantasy-filled adventure of your own to be fulfilled. You’d imagined it, but always knew that it was impossible and would never happen.
And yet, fantasy embodied was standing a few feet from you.

Fire and ice, dancing together chaotically behind a glossy surface.
That is the only way that you can describe the look in Jack’s eyes.
Reluctantly, he lowers his staff. He stands it up straight, taking a defiant pose.
“What do you want, Pitch?” he asks, the anger apparent in his voice.
You can hear the smile on Pitch’s face. “Now that’s more like it. I’d like to ask a little…favor…of you.”
“The answer’s ‘no,’” Jack fires back.
Pitch presses the dagger harder into you. A small whimper escapes your lips. “Tsk tsk. Such a pretty thing, too.”
“Don’t you dare!” Jack yells, taking up his staff once again.
Seemingly ignoring the command, Pitch leans down and whispers in your ear, though still loud enough for Jack to hear. “That necklace…did he give that to you? Oh, it suits you wonderfully. I assume it won’t melt so long as you believe in

It’s completely out of this world.
How could a stick—a fairly ordinary-looking piece of wood—transform so quickly?
He just touched it, and it came alive. The moment he wrapped his hand around his staff, a magical, bluish white ice spread over the area on and around where he was grasping it, thick around his hand and progressively thinning until it stopped a few inches in either direction.
You can’t help but smile at the remarkableness of it all.
“Do you have a sled?” Jack Frost asks as he turns to face you once again, beaming.
