The Internet Archive is a massive digital library that stores all sorts of material in the public domain, from music and movies to images, webpages and nearly three million books. All of this is open-source and available to the general public free of charge. The books documented below cover all sorts of subjects from different eras, from anatomy to portraiture, fashion to architecture, from the works of Leonardo Da Vinci to the letters of Vincent van Gogh.
And this is only scratching the surface! If you head over to the Archive and search for whatever subjects catches your interest most you can find much, much more. Just select "Texts" in the search box at the top of the page.
dA Life #08: Hosting a Contest on dAWelcome to the eighth dA Life blog, a series created to help you enjoy your time on dA and use it's many tools for sharing your art, appreciating other people's art and taking part in the wonderful community that we have here.dA Life #08: Hosting a Contest on dA2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Hosting a contest on dA is a really fun way to inspire other artists and do something positive for the community. If you've never run a contest before, it can seem like a daunting task so to make it a little easier, here are some things to consider before you create your contest and open it to the deviant public...
Your contest should have a theme. It can be as vague (Aliens, Summer, Cats) or as specific as you like (Alien Cats in Summer). When choosing your theme, take time to consider it's appeal to your potential entrants. A less specific theme is likely to attact more people as the scope for entries is wider. It depends on whether or not you want your contest to be huge - sometimes, bigger isn't always bet

Special thanks to my partner in crime, J-Cleo, for helping me write this!
Creating manga is quite daunting as a project. You have to worry about so many things and prepare for unforeseen problems. While I don’t claim to be an expert on the field, I can at least share with you my experiences while on a quest to create my own manga.
Bear in mind, this guide is geared towards individuals serious about entering the field or wanting to create a well-developed story. That doesn’t mean you can’t use this advice if you’re a hobbyist (more power to you!) but this focuses on taking it that extra step.
The Story Concept
The first thing you need should be obvious: the concept, or idea, for your story. This could be something you’ve had in your mind for a while, a sud
Prints Tips: Cropping and the Bleed EdgeHello, everybody! I'm renonevada. For those that don't know, one of my jobs here at deviantART HQ is as quality control for prints. I look at every print before it is purchased for the first time to make sure that it will print properly. Some of the things I look out for are copyright infringement, cropping, pixelation, and to make sure it doesn't violate other policies, such as being too pornographic.Prints Tips: Cropping and the Bleed Edge1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I plan on making a series of journals explaining how to make sure your prints will be approved when they get to me. I know that I'm excited to see the notification letting me know a print has been sold and I want to do what I can to make sure you all see it, as well.
For this journal, I want to speak about Cropping and the Bleed Edge.
This is hands down the number 1 reason why I am forced to reject a print, which in turn will cancel a sale. Because of this, I have tried to make this journal as detailed as possible.

Artists's Toolbox Project Educate Week: TabletsTablet questions. Anyone who hangs out in the digital art forum or the hardware forums sees these threads constantly, and they pop up other places to. Which tablet should I get? Is it worth it to get a tablet? What's a good starter tablet? This article will cover the basics of drawing tablets: what they are, what they do, if you need one, and which one you should get.Artists's Toolbox Project Educate Week: Tablets1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
What is the difference between a drawing tablet and a touchscreen tablet such as an Ipad? Can I draw with both?
To put it simply, a drawing tablet is used solely for art related endeavors, there's no apps or other functions involved. You can't stick a calender and fruit ninja on a drawing tablet. But a touchscreen tablet has tons of different functions and is all touch controlled.
So, can you use a touchscreen tablet for art? Technically, yes. But it can be challenging. Touchscreen tablets aren't as precise and the apps you can get to draw with aren't generally very extensive. This is fine
Wonderful resources for PhotographersHello lovelies! How has everyone been?Wonderful resources for Photographers2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
I've been overwhelmed with the amount of questions and comments I've been receiving about how I edit my photographs, what Photoshop actions do I use, how I do I get a "soft" effect, etc. I've been trying to keep up in answering them all but I thought it would be much easier if I give an explanation / tutorial / information about my editing in this journal. My only ask in return is that you please "like" my Official Photography Page "Sarah Jane Photography" via Facebook - I do update frequently and give tips on photography & editing. There's even a bokeh video too!
Before I delve into resources to use... I want to say to all photographers and photoshop users that everyone has a unique way in editing, and everyone has personal styles in the way they want their 'finished' photo to look. I am deeply humbled that so many enjoy my photographs; every comment and critique is very meaningful to me. I started using Photoshop when I was 13, and I love playin

To artists who want to offer commissions. I would like to address something I have been seeing as of late here and on other sites. Artists who are asking if someone would commission them if they were to offer commissions and if so, how much should they charge or how much are they willing to pay?To artists who want to offer commissions.2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
I say this with a real heart to all artists, but that is a foolish line of questions.
Really. I have been there. I even did those myself. But look at it from the side of a potential buyer.
1: Would you even commission me?
Can you imagine if a doctor were to say that? If I were to open an office would you even come to me? That makes the doctor feel like a failure. Like he has so little faith in his ability to do his job he is afraid to do it. So he has to ask a thousand people IF he were to open an office would ANYONE come? Would you? Or would you want a doctor who just opens it and does his job and believes in his ability to treat you?
Same with an artist. You sound like you have no faith in your ability. If you do

✿ Watercolor Equipment
Watercolor is a painting technique in which the paints are made of pigments suspended in a water-soluble binder. Usually, the result is transparent and appear luminous because the pigments are laid down in a relatively pure form with a few fillers obscuring the pigment color. This medium was never taken as seriously as "high art" techniques such as oil painting and was rather seen as pale and miniaturist, but it's gradually reclaiming it's place as a vehicle for the most beautiful and unexpected artistic expression. Watercolor can be vibrant and large, very vital, spontaneous and leaning a little on luck. All these aspects make watercolor painting a medium with great potential for new discoveries.

Calling all Fashionistas! So, as some of you guys may have noticed, I'm drawing my own Adventure Time comic (Pfft, who am I kidding, it's probably the only reason why you guys are even watching me), where Fionna goes to school in casual clothing. And as some of you may also know, I'm not exactly very 'creative,' or 'imaginative,' or 'good at designing,' so here I am asking you guys who are able to design to draw and whip up your own outfit ideas for Fionna, Marshall Lee, FP, Gumball, Pen or any other character who's already made an appearance in my comic if you want to, and want to get your ideas expressedCalling all Fashionistas!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
You can design any type of outfit. casual, formal, semi-formal, child's, business, summer, winter, etc. etc.
When you have your design all ready, you can submit them to the folder in my FC,
under 'Outfit Designs,' which I will be creating shortly.
You can submit as many as you want, and if I like your design and want to use it for my comic, I'll make sure to credit you for the design and e

Congratulations to deinktvis for winning the 100 points for the prompt.
August was an awfully busy month for me, so I independently decided that prompts could take a break. But now we're back in full strength, so...
Let's move on to the new prompt!
A tiny little bit of inspiration...
We spend so much time of our lives around a dinner table, so many things happen to us when there's food involved, and so many situations or events are set off by the simple fact that we're sharing a meal... but what if your story was set off by food itself? If the thing that makes all happen is as trivial, or as important, as food?
Write a piece of (flash to short) fiction about an incident involving food. But make it something interesting - the food is only a catalyst tha

DON'T GO TO ART SCHOOL- By Noah BradleyDon't go to art schoolDON'T GO TO ART SCHOOL- By Noah Bradley1 year ago in Personal More Like This
The traditional approach is failing us. It's time for a change.
I'VE HAD IT.
I will no longer encourage aspiring artists to attend art school. I just won't do it. Unless you're given a full ride scholarship (or have parents with money to burn), attending art school is a waste of your money.
I have a diploma from the best public art school in the nation. Prior to that I attended the best private art school in the nation. I'm not some flaky, disgruntled art graduate, either. I have a quite successful career, thankyouverymuch.
But I am saddened and ashamed at art schools and their blatant exploitation of students. Graduates are woefully ill-prepared for the realities of being professional artists and racked with obscene amounts of debt. By their own estimation, the cost of a four year education at RISD is $245,816. As way
Small RantUhg I'm so tired of seeing artists under selling themselves cause there's cheap asses out there who seem to have no sense of value.Small Rant1 year ago in Personal More Like This
To artists: Don't undersell yourself. If you spend hours on a picture for someone who only paid you $5... stop. Seriously you under selling yourself just to get a commission shouldn't happen. I understand that you might think you're not popular enough to get tons of commissions so you think that if you sell them for really cheap people will buy them, but who cares! If you spend 4 hours on a picture worth $5 you've essentially paid your commissioner with your life. You might as well open up requests! Charge what your art is worth!! You not only hurt yourself but everyone else. The reason you have to sell your art for chump change is because everyone else is selling it for chump change. Also, why are you drawing primarily for money anyway? It's not exactly a good job. Heck most of us don't even make minimum wage ((myself included)), so what a rewardin
