How To Sculpt in Wax pt 1Well, as promised, I thought I should write up a little information on sculpting in Wax. It's not the first medium one would think to work in when starting out with sculpture, but it does offer a lot of benefits. How To Sculpt in Wax pt 16 years ago in Personal More Like This
That said, though, it's probably not the best medium to use if you're JUST getting interested in sculpting. It's primary benefit is that it allows for lots of clean sharp detail, which is something that's valued in the collectibles field. But we all know detail doesn't equal good work. As a prerequisite to wax, I think it would be best to start out sculpting in Super Sculpey. It's easy to get your hands on, and everything you learn from working with it is applicable to wax sculpting.
But if you're wanting to dive in and try wax, here's some help with getting going:
I personally use a few different kinds of wax with my sculptures. All of which are mixed and offered through private 'dealers' I guess you would say. ha! www.willowproducts.com is an excellent resource for gettin

Tools of the trade! Sculpting in wax, while essentially very similar to sculpting in softer clays, does require some specialized tools. Nothing too fancy, but you will need some certain things.
The most important tool is an Alchol Torch. This is a small rubber bottle with a wick that runs up to a screw on cap. You fill it with denatured alcohol, which in some cases is difficult to find. Here in California, I can pick it up at any hardware store, but just a couple of years ago it wasn't as easy to get.
Here is a link to the one I'm using. There may be cheaper alternatives, but $15 isn't too shabby: http://www.egeneralmedical.com/hsi-3659460.html
The alcohol runs you about $15 a gallon too, and usually lasts me about a month of solid working time.
So, what is the alcohol torch used for, you ask? Well heating up your tools of course! It can also be gently squeezed while lit to provide concentrated heat

There are a lot of poor starving artists.
Do you ever watch the first few episodes of American Idol? I do; it's fascinating television. So many delusional people in such a short amount of time. It's glorious! A good friend of mine once said that the reason there are so many contestants that are absolutely abhorrent singers is because all of those people didn't have someone that loved them enough to tell them they're no good at singing. (Either that or the poor schmucks simply refused to believe the well-meaning people that might have tried to educate the cacophanous vocalists). We live in such a politically correct, 'I don't want to be responsible for stamping out your dreams' society that we're no longer honest with each other. Hence, beautiful trainwreck television in the form of phenomenally bad singing.

Popular Fan ArtThis has been bothering me for some time now, and I've seen this sort of behavior even before I joined dA, but some folks honestly need to stop acting like artists who happen to draw fan art or fan comics for "popular" series automatically makes them "cheap" or that they're somehow shallow people because of it. People can actually, you know, like a series that's popular and end up wanting to draw fan works because they want to. Popular or well-known works or series are going to have lots of fans, so it's not exactly unnatural that more people might be inclined to draw fan art for certain series. It's one thing if you're not a fan of something popular, because it's completely normal for people to have preferences, but when you're just being dismissive of someone else entirely or looking down on them just because the subject matter they choose to draw is "popular" then it makes you look petty and/or jealous. Because, let's be honest, there are people who get really pissed and uptiPopular Fan Art2 years ago in Personal More Like This

Everyone has heard of it, everyone fears the very sight of it, but if you are an artist, there is a good chance it creeps at you regularly, more often than a flu, in various forms and intensity; in psychology, Frustration is a common emotional response to opposition / obstacle, is related to anger and disappointment and its strength depends on the size of the established challenge. When Frustration calls you more often than your mother does, it's time to take an action!

GIVEAWAY! Win things~ ONE DAY LEFT!I didn't want to make a new journal to announce this and bump the giveaway off my page, but!GIVEAWAY! Win things~ ONE DAY LEFT!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I just wanted to make a quick announcement! The USPS (what I use to send all packages) recently raised the price of United States first class parcels as well as Delivery Confirmation. To reflect this change, I unfortunately have the raise the price of United States shipping from $2.80 to $3.00. I hope you all understand this change! I do everything I can to keep shipping costs low, but this particular change is out of my control. International price will stay the same at $3.50 per package, as it doesn't come with delivery confirmation and is unaffected by this change.
Thank you for your understanding! ♥ Shipping costs will change on the website and Etsy, so there's nothing you as the buyer need to do, except shake your fist at your local post office. ;D
^^^ just to clarify, this has nothing to do with the giveaway. winner doesn't pay shipping costs--this applies just to normal o
Melodrama"Oh, good morning, Simon."Melodrama2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Simon looked up from the bowl of cereal he was fixing himself and grinned. "Good morning, yourself. Just fixing some breakfast before we head to town—no other food here and I'm half starved."
"Good luck with that," said Holly, regarding the pile of bran flakes that sat inside the bowl. "There's no milk left."
"There's no more milk. Ran out of it last night and I didn't have time to make it to the grocery store."
"But I already poured my cereal!" said Simon with distress.
"That's unfortunate," replied Holly. She then watched with perplexity as her temporary flat-mate set the bowl on the counter, walked over to his cot and collapsed into the sheets. "Simon, what are you doing?" she asked.
Simon threw an arm over his face, covering his eyes with the crook of his elbow. "All that trouble for nothing," he moaned. "What is this? What is my life?!"
"This is a cruel world." The young man rolled onto his stomach, dragging the covers with him until he
A DISNEY PRINCESS FIRSTWhat we're really excited to see is the courageous Princess Merida in Pixar's Brave, who challenges her family and country's customs while wielding a bow and arrow on horseback - now that's a real Disney princess "first."A DISNEY PRINCESS FIRST3 years ago in Personal More Like This
At first I thought this was someone being sarcastic, then I realized it it was something someone actually said.
Don't get me wrong, at some point I'll most likely be seeing Brave myself, and the idea of an animated Pixar film taking place in ancient Scotland is all kinds of neat, but come on. Even when I saw the trailer the whole, "MERIDA THAT IS NOT LADY-LIKE" had me nearly rolling my eyes. I'm really, really hoping the film isn't going to prop itself up on, "there is a young and feisty girl BUT SHE ISN'T LIKE OTHER GIRLS BECAUSE SHE WANTS TO BE A WARRIOR AND DO THINGS ONLY BOYS DO AND EVERYONE THINKS IT'S WRONG BECAUSE IT'S NOT LADY-LIKE BUT BECAUSE SHE'D RATHER

How you guys doing?
I'm leaving the MLP stuff.
Basically, the point of this journal (I'll try not to make it too long.) is that I'm getting ready to move on from the whole My Little Pony scene.
It's been fun, guys, but let's face it, I was only going to keep it up for so long.
As you have probably noticed, despite (attempting) to make comics for the last few months, I've pretty much fallen out of the whole MLP fandom scene.
Unlike when I first joined, back in 2011, where I'd be scouring the various websites for the latest news and re-watching the weekly episodes, I'm just not pushed to do so anymore. I never got around to finishing Season 3, or watching that movie thing, and I've pretty much ignored the whole thing.
Don't get me wrong, I don't HATE the show, nor do I HATE the fandom, I still really enjoy it, and I really do hope I'll watch the last of S3.
It's just I've certainly

Glass Eyes:iconLyrak: Lyrak asks: "OK, question for folks who use glass/resin eyes for their sculpted portions: where the heck do you find them??? I am having trouble finding eyes of the correct size for stuff like this. o.o; "Glass Eyes2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I know of two places you can buy eyes.
US: Van Dyke's Taxidermy
Personally I use a 10-14mm eye for my dolls. That is a standard size for birds, amphibians, some mammals and dolls so it's quite a common size to find.
You can also make your own if you have the time or inclination. You need to make a mould of a marble or something similar using platinum silicone, then when the silicone has cured you pour in crystal clear resin. You must use platinum silicone as tin silicone (RTV - room temperature vulcanization) silicone will inhibit the cure of the resin and it will stay tacky forever. You can paint the back of the resin cabochon with acrylics, inks, watercolours or

My personal online psychiatrist is making me narrate this nonsense down on the chip embedded in my tooth in hopes that someday I may be cured of my "incompatibility" with ANNET, or at least possibly reduce the "mild psychosis caused by work-related stress" as she calls it.
I know that it's not going to happen. The problem is something genetic and while those goons in the genetics department would love to get their machines into my brain, I prefer the lack of sleep and headaches to lobotomy.
I seen the reports on their test subjects: "total neural shut-down", "subject resists integration with the net, increasing the signal strength lead to damage to the 85% of the frontal lobe."
Call me old fashioned, but I like my brain the way it is.

Cyanide and Happiness ShowOur animated show has been waiting to be made a long time. This is a big god damn deal to us, and I hope you guys want to see the final product as badly as we want to make it. Seriously, we have years of animation we've been wanting to throw out for you to ocularly digest, and we would rather give straight to your face instead of going through TV where it will get COVERED in preservatives and insecticides.
My analogy has wandered from me, but please check out our kickstarter and what could potentially be the best thing ever to happen to mankind. Potentially.

"Shiloh, what's the matter?" asked Emmy.
He didn't answer. He just crouched, his fingers freezing to the stone, his breath rising in clouds from his parted lips.
"I'm scared," he said finally.
"Why are you scared?"
He shook his head. "All these people here, all these people under us, they were once alive, right? They breathed. They smiled. They cried and sometimes the wanted to die. But they all had their own lives and stories and problems, and we don't know any of them. We don't know anything at all." He bowed his head slightly. so i listened to that song.. and ..um.. it sounded glorious... but it also sounded like an anthem to coming out of the closet.... i mean, i deal with subtext a lot. and even i have seen people see more in my own writing than i intended. rarely but it happened. so subtext is hardly a new thing ...
we are talking about a song that says
