The design needs to be written down. This can be anywhere from 100 to 1000 words.
The design needs to be communicated to a producer, who takes charge of the project.
The producer recruits a designer, inker and colorist.
A sketch needs to be produced, then approved.
After any necessary changes are made, the sketch is cleaned up and a finished sketch is produced.
Then an inker goes in and replaces every pixel of the sketch with finished high contrast line art.
Then a colorist does a set of flats. That has to be approved.
Then after the necessary changes are made, the flats are shaded and any effects are added.
Then the full-res design is delivered to the client.
The whole time this is going on, a producer is watching the project step-by-step and coordinating with the Exec and the client.
A full page of art takes four people anywhere from 12 to 18 man hours to produce.
