Chapter 5 'Familiar Faces'Alek looked up from his paper, setting it down on the table in front of him. A nasty cold breeze was coming in through the window, making him shiver. He stood, walking across the beautiful floor to shut it, drawing the curtains.Chapter 5 'Familiar Faces'5 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
"Deryn, have you read the paper yet?" he called out. Footsteps sounded from the other room, and Deryn entered. She was wearing trousers and a buttoned up shirt, hair cropped short as ever.
"No, why? Something good?" her eyes were bright.
"Yes, actaully, I think you'll find it amusing." he handed her the news, crossing his arms and watching her as she read the front page.
Her face went from curiosity to astonishment. "Blisters, Alek, your a genious! How did you know?" she looked up at him, amazed.
Alek chuckled. "I know Volger about as well as I know myself. The wildcount gets what he wants. He wasn't going to let a little thing like my 'death' stop him from finishing the wishes of my father. Volger is a loyal man, I suspected he might go this far."

"DERYN!" Alek shouted as he shook her limp body trying to wake her up, get her to talk, or do something.
Alek's arm landed on a small box as he continued to shake Deryn (as if that would help) and knocked it over. The clattering helped Alek see through his panic and look at what box he had knocked over.
"God's wounds," Alek breathed as he saw that this box was Deryn's smelling salts, "This could barking work!"
He opened the box and waved it under her nose trying to spread the sharp smell to wake Deryn up. Finally Deryn opened her eyes and Alek sighed with relief, "Thank providence that you're alright, Deryn! I thought you had just died! Are you all right?"
"Oooooohhhh... Alright isn't the right word here, I think," Deryn managed to get out before hurling right on the bed.
"Schiesse! What's the matter Deryn?" Shouted Alek and began to spout off all kinds of Austrian swears.
Deryn looked up at Alek and whispered breathing hard, "Get... get... Dr... Barl...Barl...

Deryn's first thoughts were, "Wh-where a-am I?" then, "W-what's going on?" and finally, "Am I KISSING ALEK?!?!" Her eyes snapped open and she pulled away from Alek shocked at what she did now. Her head pounded, but she managed to get out, "Wh-what were you DOING Alek?"
Alek leaned back looking shocked, as he saw Deryn wince from her pounding ribs and head, but managed to compose himself and reply, "Y-you're alive, Dyl- erm, what's your true name?"
Deryn stared at him, unable to process that Alek knew who she really was, answering, "Deryn, and how did you know that I'm a barking girl?!"
Alek blushed, whispering, "Y-you were hurt so I-"
Alek broke off blushing furiously as Deryn understood what had happened and replied in her girl voice, "So you know, and hate me, at this point that you've seen what I've kept from you all these months," Deryn sighed and hung her head, "I-I... I'm sorry Alek, but I thought that because I was a commoner I wouldn't matter t

The fire crackled nicely in front of him, drowsiness threatening to take over again. He stood and stretched, then headed out the door of his quarters. Someone ran into him just then, nrealy sending him flying.
"Watch it! - Oh! Sorry Dad!" the young boy ran to Alek and hugged him. Alek laughed and ruffled the boy's hair.
"Where exactly are you headed off to in such a rush, Jaspert Volger?" Alek asked, holding the boys shoulders.
"Out to the courtyard. Master Klopp told me he would let me take a few steps around in the runabout today!"
Alek studied his son's excited face. He looked so much like his mother, sharp fine features and bright blue eyes, but dark hair like his father. His eyes sparked with excitement, and his smile was as charming as anything.
"Alright, get along now. Remember, you've got a few lessons this evening with Dr. Barlow tonight"
Little Jaspert sighed, looking annoyed.
Chapter 2 EditThe next few days were extremely difficult for Alek. He couldn't keep his mind off Deryn. Each time he looked at her he noticed just how feminie she was. It was amazing that no one else noticed. When he wasn't with her, he was wishing he was.Chapter 2 Edit5 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
Even more amazing was how attracted he was to her after only knowing her true gender for less than a week. It was like he'd known her his whole life. Well, he really had. Before coming to the Leviathan, it was like his life was a blur, a dream that never really existed at all. She was the only friend he'd ever really had. He felt completed when he was with her.
"What are you doing, you fool?" Deryn snapped at him as they were walking Tazza together one evening. Alek had absentmindedly reached for her hand, and she had to slap it away.
"Sorry, sorry. I am." he said, angry that he had let himself slip like that.
"You know how that would look to others, bum-rag. I don't need people thinking anything else along with what the already most likely do."

"Lilit, whatever this is, can't it wait until I get out of work? I'm trying to make myself a living - "
"Quiet, we're almost there"
Alek made a face but continued on. It best be important ot drag her halfway across the world looking for him. Soon she ducked inside the doorway of an abandoned apartment building. Alek was almost out of breath, not having ran like that since being aboard the Leviathan. Lilit looked fine however, even in her black silk clothes.
"What's this about? How in the world did you find me?" Alek sat, catching his breath.
Lilit sat next to him, smiling. "I just had to know where to look."
He looked at her incredulously. "Seriously. How?"
She laughed, her face looking very tired, and much older than she remembered. "As soon as Nene heard of your 'death', she laughed. She knew there was no way you could ever be dead. She told me she suspected it would be too much fo

Alek could barely move himself, his legs felt like they were broken, but he tried to ignore it, standing weakly to search for her. He had held on for dear life but....
His head was spinning, the ground a mix of colors and directions. He wasn't sure where he as at all. It was dark, the only light coming from the moon and the lanterns from somewhere up ahead.
He had heard it hit the water, the crunch of wood and screech of men and creatures alike. He wanted to go help them, to find Volger and Klopp and see if they had made it out alive. But he couldn't.
In a way the scenario was perfect. Everyone would think he and Deryn were dead, and his whereabouts would remain a secret forever. But he would give himself up right now if it meant saving the lives that were most

Deryn sprinted down the corridor, grabbing the gut hatch and peeked out about what the commotion was. What she saw totally blew her mind.
"Barking spiders," Deryn mumbled in awe as she saw a clanker machine swoop overhead and shoot a row of bullets into the whale's spine. Deryn dropped down the hatch as the aeroplane zoomed overhead almost beheading her.
"Barking persistent are they! Once on the glacier and now on the border of China? What are the clankers now; watchdogs?" Deryn exclaimed, checking first to see if the aeroplane was gone, then pulling herself out onto the spine. She whistled with the scene that met her eyes; there were huge masses of dead bodies strewn all over the Leviathan, both beastie and human. The sight brought tears to Deryn's eyes to see the airship so helpless with the clankers swooping again and again destroying more and more of it each time.
"Bum-rags!" Deryn shouted at them tears spring

The time and place the falls from grace.
We all walk at our own pace
forever attempting to win the illusionary race.
So I took the time, to sit and rewind....
granted pause to the cause, reflections of the mind.
Years upon years slowly drifted on by...
Journeys left behind slumbering alongside the road of unknown,
collecting dirt and debris, anxiously awaiting to be set free,
but could not flee...no one to save me and turn the key.
Everything has a time and a place within the enchanted space.
A story to tell of heaven and hell...
Realise this upon states of bliss,
In the beginning we all fell--in the end we all shall fall.
Can no longer ignore the ancient call.
Chapter 7 'Waiting'Alek refused to come out of his room.Chapter 7 'Waiting'5 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
Deryn stood outside the door for what seemed like an hour knocking, talking softly to him to try and coax him out, but to no avail. He was not in the mood for anything but sitting and brooding.
Bum-rag, Deryn thought. While he was sitting in there, comfy as a bug in a rug, she was out here, desperatly trying to break the akward silence with Lilit. She had offered the girl water, food, rest, but she declined all, choosing to sit in the living quarters, Bovril on her lap.
The blasted creature had been all too elated to see her, running up and down her arm, spitting out random words in it's excitment. She stroked it gently, cooing to it in different languages, Bovril practically purring.
Deryn made herself a sandwish and sat on the chair farthest from Lilit, chewing quietly. The girl was much different than Deryn remebered, and she felt her cheeks get hot when she thought about they're last meeting. When she finished eating, she grabbed her sketch pad

"I... I was busy and I didn't want to bother you later at night, un. I'm sorry," the blond replied, his eyes a downcast.
The redhead smiled and wrapped his arms around his servants waist. "It's fine, but would you like to sleep with me tonight?"
Deidara smiled and nodded. "Yes, I would," he said, a slight blush on his cheeks.
"Good," Sasori said, as he leaned down to kiss the blond lovingly. Deidara's face heated up even more and he wrapped his arms around his Danna's neck. Deidara was about to take it further, but Sasori pulled away.
"I don't want to get carried away," he said, brushing the back of his hand against the blond's flushed cheek. "Would you like to go to the orchard?" he asked, already wishing he hadn't.
Deidara's eyes went wide with fear and he shook his head. "N-no," he said, his voice shaky.
The redhead nodded and sighed. "I'm sorry, I forgo-"

The Claxton bell was ringing its head off but there was nobody in the corridor, as Alek jogged over to a gut hatch and peeked out to see what the commotion was all about. The whine of engines pierced the air and Alek understood that they were ambushed by aeroplanes.
"Bumsen!" Alek cried, and listened closer. There was something missing from the usual sounds the Leviathan made but Alek couldn't understand what... Then it hit him.
"Dummkopf!" yelled Alek and began to climb up toward the engines, "Of course they would aim for the engines you idiot, the engines are the airships most important way of traveling! The clankers should know that by now from the sultan in the Ottoman empire!" Alek climbed faster reaching the walker cabin, and peeked in to see what the problem was. What met his eyes was beyond what he imagined; Klopp was unconscious and Mr. Hirst was tending to him.
"Mr. Hirst, what happened here?" Alek yelled.

They were in a bedroom. A huge bed stood against the wall, with scarlet hangings, and lavishly furnished with chairs and bokshelves. Volger gestured for Alek to sit at the small desk to their right. He complied, too tired to stand, and Volger sat across from him.
"Have you any idea where we are?" the man asked, lacing his fingers together and reclining in his chair.
"Not a clue" Alek answered stiffly. "Though I gather its somewhere quite nice."
Volger nodded. "We are at the home of your granduncle, Franz Joseph."
Alek froze. "What do you mean? Why in God's name are we here?"
"He is dying." Volger said simply. "When the German's attacked the Leviathan, I claimed to have captured you, and they brought us here. I must say, he was quite pleased. He gave me this room to stay in as long as I like."
"Well, thats lovely." Alek scoffed. Volger ignored that and c

There was a light tap on the doorframe that for the most part went unnoticed as she craned her neck trying to see past the reflection. "Deryn, shouldn't you be in your bed?" An amused voice drifted from the doorway startling the child.
Deryn turned around with a sheepish grin. She knew she was caught and if she didn't play her cards right, she was going to get in trouble. "But mammy." She whined, letting go of the window's ledge. "I don't want to go to bed."
"Deryn." Her mam warned and looked pointedly at her.
She relented, recognizing that tone and not wanting to risk being scolded before bed. She didn't want her good mood to be ruined. Deryn trudged over to her bed and crawled underneath the comforter. Now that she was in bed, she whined aga

The sound of the news drifted lightly throughout the quiet house. Two reporters swapped news back and forth, somberly announcing the day's calamities; a man whose beachfront property was flooded, a teenage girl who broke her neck at cheerleading practice, a distraught father whose son had run away. Each report was tragic, but Zacky found them simply amusing.
The light softly emanating from the TV caused shadows to dance in the sparsely lit room. The window shades were hastily drawn shut, leaving only the glow of the sunlight that trickled in through the cracks. Occasionally, a slight breeze would filter in through the open window, causing the dark shade to allow more of the sun's rays inside. Zacky hissed indignantly each time one of the beams met his alabaster skin, insulted that the light had the nerve to touch him.
As he continued to watch the program, Zack scoffed at the humans' priorities. They were worried about petty storms and insignificant dilemmas, when th
