Elementals! Now that I'm over my crazy nesting spree, I'm finally working on elementals! The leaf dragons I posted got an insane amount of love yesterday. They were SO much fun to work on. I think I might make an autumn leaf set as well, but we'll see. I'll at least make an autumn baby. I just love fall colors too much not toElementals!1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I finished some nature ponies and was inspired by the flower one to concept out a flower dragon. She'll be a sort of mate to leaf dragon. I'll finish coloring her concept art tonight. She's gonna be sooo pretty. I also concepted out a lava dragon and some others that were requested. He's pretty freakin cool, even if I am going to hate myself once I actually attempt to build him... anyway, more concept art will be up this weekend, and possibly a flower dragon if I find some time to sculpt between all the weekend errand running. We're planning to get me a new car (mine isn't baby f
Flight of Dragons - Live Action MovieAs some of you noticed, I uploaded some work I did for the Flight of Dragons live action movie. This will be an independent film remake of the 1982 animated classic movie!Flight of Dragons - Live Action Movie2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I grew up watching the original animated movie, every day of my childhood, perhaps more than once per day. I'm sure that my parents were quite sick of it, but they let me watch it anyhow. So, you can imagine my excitement that I was asked to create some quick paintings to illustrate a storyboard for the trailer. You can see those in my gallery!
They are using crowd-sourcing to fund this project, as they are doing things like hiring a professional orchestra to record the score, etc... neat stuff! If you want to learn more or want to chip in, the website will answer nearly all the questions you might have: http://www.flightofdragonsmovie.com/
If it doesn't, I'm sure that they wouldn't mind emails! They also have a facebook and are very responsive there: https://www.facebook.com/theflightofdragons

On pricing your artwork and creating a career...I am going to be speaking at an "Entrepreneurship In The Arts" program later today, and I've been organizing my thoughts. One subject that is certain to come up; "how do you arrive at a fair price for your original artwork?" I have some definite ideas regarding that question. On pricing your artwork and creating a career...2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I was always told that the accepted model for artists and artisans, when it comes to pricing, was double your costs for materials, figure out an hourly price (double that for your retail price if you plan to have wholesale/retail differentials), add it up and there's your item price. I think this model is pure bullshit.
I was also told "charge what the market will bear!" Again, vague bullshit. What if you live in a depressed area? What if you live in a third world country? What if you're at some artist's ally at a little convention and there is a kid sitting next to you selling her character sketches for $5 each?
Here is what I think. There are so many variables when it comes to pricing original art. Yo

So most of you know I've been really into my elemental dragons lately. They are much more intricate and time consuming than my usual work. It feels really good to push myself in a different direction and try to figure out new things. I have learned a TON while working on these guys! I've been trying new techniques with armatures, texturing, and skinner blends. Now, as I've been finishing them, I have been putting them up for auction which I feel may be giving the wrong impression for my continued sales. Some people have taken issue with me calling them One-of-a-Kinds stati

Introduction to Cross StitchingCross StitchingIntroduction to Cross Stitching1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
Cross stitch is one of a number of embroidery stitches, but usually the one most people are familiar with. Whether it was in a school art class or just randomly picking up a cross stitch kit as a kid, a lot of us have tried it at some point. Lets delve into this popular stitch a little bit.
What is a cross stitch?
As the name suggests, is is simply a cross, or an 'X' stitched with thread onto canvas. Typically, it's used to make a picture or a pattern. The stitch will form a complete square, and in this regard it is quite similar to pixel art. Through the placement of individual stitches adjacent to one another, an overall image will eventually appear.
It's an incredibly simple stitch, but can take some time to master. Like many crafts, it can be difficult to notice the

Let's just go over what I posted yesterday: I voiced that I have no opinion on guns in America, because I don't live there and as such; don't care. I said that I, personally, am afraid of guns and think they're industrial killing machines. And I posed a vague, hypothetical question that could have been applied to any situation where an old law/doctrine is in effect.
That's it. Nothing more. Harshest word in there was "change" followed by a question mark. Not "ban", not "make guns illegal" and certainly not "outlaw free speech and trial by jury", which some people with a slightly looser grasp on reality seem to think go hand in hand with owning the firearms I said I don't care about.
Well, today, I am going to post an opinion: if you're the kind of insecure, paranoid little twit that flies off the handle when someone poses a simple question, and who holds weapons and the laws that permit them with such religious reverence that you perceive that question as not
Internet BullyingFor many kids growing up in the 80's, if you were bullied in school you were able to "tough it out" because you knew your social interaction with said bully was isolated only to when you were in close proximity of them. When the bell range and you went home, you could dismiss the bully's taunting and physical abuse and be reminded of friends and family who supported you and kept your spirits up.Internet Bullying3 years ago in Personal More Like This
But in today's day and age of seemingly constant online connectivity, the "victims" of bullying have a harder time escaping. Once the bell rings, they're still potentially subject to be bullied via verbal assaults online, which often goes completely unnoticed by parents and friends. The worse part of this is that we're often told that because it happens "on the internet" there's no real consequences of trolling or bullying, which is far from true.
I've never accepted the excuse that just because "it happens on the internet" means it can't personally harm you in real life. Part of that is from m

Things that are not the same as working for freeEvery time artists are invited to work for free, or for exposure, or for the chance to be part of something very special and wonderful (ahem), people like to defend the offer of, well, nothing, by comparing it to other things, which it is not comparable to. Here are a few of them, for easy reference:Things that are not the same as working for free2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Working for free is not like...submitting to the Spectrum annual (and similar publications).
Why not? Because these publications really ARE used by creative directors looking for fresh talent. I've been hired based on appearances in Spectrum, and so have plenty of people I know. Submitting to annuals is a reasonable investment. I know, I know, I haven't submitted to Spectrum in ages, but that's not because it didn't help. It's because I was miffed about not getting my copies, but that's just me being curmudgeonly, and cutting off my nose to spite my face. There IS value in annuals.

First of all, I would like to apologize for not responding to comments, and being slow on notes! I have been very busy with a project over the past year that I am excited to announce now. Later this month I will be releasing a collection of preliminary work from my Thumbelina series, inspired by the writings of Hans Christian Andersen.
The images will include sketches and underpaintings from the first part of the series, and will be bound into a softcover book. The book will be 38 pages, and include over 50 working images that have been my initial steps in creating the collection of existing paintings, as well as future images. Visit my blog for more images and info! https://annie-stegg-tlyt.squarespace.com/new-blog/2013/8/4/a-sketchbook-and-new-paintings

Regarding Artists and AgesStart of rant.Regarding Artists and Ages2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'm sure all of you have noticed that I am not very open about my age. Now, this is by no means because I am ashamed of how old I am, nor is it that I am afraid for my personal security and what not. No, I am not open about my age because I do not believe that age makes an artist. I have met many young artists who are absolutely wonderful at what they do and many older artists as well. What bugs me is when people use age as an excuse. For example: (And this is purely hypothetical) If an older artist says that they are better than a younger artist because they're older and have had more experience. Where I agree that maybe the older artist has had more experience and has mastered many parts of their craft, I do not think that they should underestimate the younger artists. Sometimes there are different styles and techniques that may be newer that the younger artist uses, and sometimes people are really just naturally talented at what they do, so, in some cases the younger
Black Friday advice and tips.If you’re going out tonight or tomorrow for Black Friday DON’T forget to say ‘Thank you’ to the people who are working/serving you! & Some tips!Black Friday advice and tips.10 months ago in Personal More Like This
It’ll be crowded, stuffy, and you may wind up being disappointed about something, perhaps even angry, but remember that the people who are serving you are just doing their job.
Be kind to them and understand they are not miracle workers, they cannot part the Red sea to find you an item that their store is out of, so don’t yell at them about it.
TIP: Usually they will offer to search for the item you want in another store of their company, take up the offer and if you really want that item be willing to go get it where they find it.
They can’t disobey the rules laid out for them as company policy just to make you happy, so don’t try to guild trip them into doing it. They could and will get fired, and losing your job during the holidays is no fun.
They aren't your personal p

Have a wonderful time with your loved ones and I hope Santa left something special for you under the Christmas tree
There is a special dA offer that expires on 26th December. If you give one premium membership as a gift, dA gifts a premium membership of the same value to you.
So I decided to make one of my watchers happy, and they can make their friend happy too.
I decided to give one lucky deviant a 3 month premium membership in the points equivalent.
I won't give you a premium membership directly, 'cos that would mean I would get one from dA myself.
I will give you 636 points (which is a 3 month premium membership value) and when you get it, you can buy your special friend a 3 month premium membership and you will get the same gift from deviantart.
So, that means two premium memberships, for you and your friend (:
But be careful, the offer expires on the 26th o
