Light and ShadowLight and Shadow2 years ago in Free Verse More Like This
You flee the night,
You flee the day,
For a safe place to stay.
Shadows come closer,
Lights gleam near
Of both you have something to fear.
Darkness brings secrets,
Brilliance carts lies,
Both hidden in layered disguise.
Dusk steals the sun,
Dawn filches the moon,
Taking them away all too soon.
Murky brooks hide,
Clear streams fool,
Minds bend in this wily duel.
Light does too,
But which is preferred by you?
Come to the shadows,
For flight is done in vain.
Fall to the light,
For fight will be your bane.
Escape is only futile,
Resistance is mere bile,
Haven is but a pile.
The Light will find you.
The Night will catch you.

There stood multiple plains of fighters, each united by a loosely defined goal. Though one assortment of fighters, the warriors, was separated greatly by only their own narcissism. The gladiators, in opposition, were strict to become what the supposedly superior group is not. Then there were the mere brawlers, who weren't by definition weak but lacked specific weaponry that neither the warriors nor gladiators did. However, when it came down to it the brawlers were the largest force tying the warriors and gladiators together.
Yet now they opposed each other. The warriors, whom were confident enough to rely solely on themselves. And the gladiators, whom were happy to except the help of the brawlers.
Between, beneath and around them was a city of rock and stone. The cliffs towered above them in places yet also left gaps that would have left them falling to their d

The tide churned as the tug and pull of waves could be felt in the shallows below the surface. The water lulling in great tumbling circles along the rocky reefs, shellfish sprawled open, eager to catch their meal as it swashed by. It left a colorful array of corals and other sea life running about in the midday squall, enjoying the bounty the equator's summer sun provided.
The hustle and bustle of the reef was mostly ignored by one of its inhabitants; having grown used to the rough tides and overall oceanic noise, attempting to nap within a sand bed between the rocks. Despite the activity, it was a relatively mellow day out, the tide was high, and the seas were overall calm; perfect napping weather as far as the jet black mer was concerned. He'd only rolled over once, swatting at a few pestilent crabs before attempting to doze off agai

The rusty coat of the she-wolf moved like a blur across the bridge that spanned the city river. The various colored lights of the city flew past her as she traveled again on her nightly trip into the darkened heart of one of the city's drearier vicinities. It was the City of Despair and she brought her normally cheerful self to run the city's streets on a regular basis to meet with an old friend that had been through hardships the she-wolf was unable to comprehend. Still, she felt it was up to her to aid her old friend in some way. Thoughts of his fallen state had been filling her mind more often recently and brought a cloud of despair over her own life. It was because of this new stress that her usual free moving gallop on her journey through the city had changed to a stiff and hurried run. She took mental note of this change as she neared her destination and questioned herself if, perhaps she was getting too involved in affairs that shouldn't be her concern. Before she could think an

Happy Birthday, Persephone“Hades...” her voice was tentative as she poked her head through the door, seeking entrance.Happy Birthday, Persephone2 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
Hades looked up from his favorite chair, the book he was engrossed in still propped up on his knee. Of all the people in the Underworld, Persephone was the only one allowed to disturb him while reading. But it was late, and he was surprised to see her up.
“Ah, hello Persephone,” he said, smiling, “Come in and sit with me.”
She trotted in and sat down in her favorite chair, the one he kept close to the fire because she was always cold. Hades was tired from hours of paperwork, and he'd missed her these last few days. Underworld business, dull though it may have been, was a Zeus-ordered mandate, and there was no shirking the job. There were many nights when he didn't sleep at all, and he knew it distressed Persephone to be left alone so often in these lofty chambers.
“Will you sit with me?” he asked, and she beamed at him, relieved. With her

Dean was roused from sleep unexpectedly. Daddy was picking up his backpack from the corner, the one Mommy had put together once the due date had become imminent. Rubbing his eyes of sleep it took Dean only a minute to realize what it meant that Daddy was picking up his hospital backpack.
It was time for his little brother to be born. The four-year-old wiggled out of his covers and hurried over to Daddy who slipped the pack on for him. Dean was then lifted into his fathers arms and carried down the stairs. In a hurry and Mommy in the car already, his father wrapped Dean in his oversized leather jacket and took him out to the car.
The trip to the hospital was filled with his mother breathing in a way Dean had never seen before between her quips of, John, slow down. It wouldnt have mattered how fast Daddy drove, they werent going to make it. The baby was coming to quickly.

You used to catch me whenever I'd fall.
You watched my back and I watched yours,
We promised forever to stay so close.
What happened to the time when we sat together
In silence, just being there for each other?
What happened to all the moments we had,
The funny, the awkward, the happy, the sad?
Oh, tell me what happened to us that fall?
We fell apart for nothing at all.
Sometimes, I want to go back to that time,
When I shared with you every little secret of mine.
You changed me into a feeling person,
Freed my heart from an icy prison.
How could you ever do that to me?
Teach me emotion and then let me be?
Why couldn't you leave when I was coldhearted?
I would at least not have felt so deserted.
You just moved on and left me behind,
To what that did to me, you were blind.

"Why hellooo, brother of mine."
John cringed at the sarcastically cheery voice, one hand running nervously through Sherlock's hair. "Yes, hello Harry. What's going on?"
"Oh, you should've seen what the morning post brought me," Harriet replied gleefully. "Now I know why you haven't called about Christmas yet. Been too busy buggering your flatmate."
Old pain flared, the kind that festered in the subconscious for years. "If you just called to-," John began hotly, but Harriet cut him off.
"Well, funny thing about my paper. It's in this envelope, see." John frowned as a loud whump sounded over the line. "And that was me dropping the envelope in the post."
The knot of fear tightened in John's stomach. "So?"
"Posted to mum."
"What?!" John sat up so quickly he nearly toppled over. He scrambled out of the bed, pacing into the main room and back again. Sherlock

You'll find them in my watch
Where they click away,

I'm searching for them in the sky,
The memories I've lost

You'll find them hardwired in my arm
Along with my nerves.
When I set fire to my home,
And patched my soul with staples,
I kept whispering
through clenched teeth:

The rusty, red wolf galloped through the city streets easily. She knew the way well for she had traveled this same path nearly every night. Her limbs moved easily and freely beneath her. Running was one of her favorite things. It was such an enjoyment for her that even the dreary hopelessness of the night's journey couldn't bring her down so long as she was in motion. She followed the familiar streets until she came to an old tavern. She slipped in the back, careful to avoid any people. Once in, she vaulted onto a high shelf and slipped into a dark hole in the wall above the shelf. A set of cheaply carpeted stairs rose in front of her. Without a break in movement, she leapt up the stairs, three, sometimes four at a time. The old stairs weren't very many to begin with and she was at the top within seconds. Here she hesitated outside an old door. The whole p

The blonde sighs and shakes his head, continuing to walk towards the door where he sees his daughter. A few words from the author:
The chapter below has come into being spontaneously, for fun, without the bigger concept of writing any more chapters. It wasn’t supposed to have any form of continuity, and the thread of Marcin & Nivan - the two heroes in this story - was meant as a note of spice in their created lives. Both characters were created for the purpose of a role playing game, both of them had partners in their lives as well as separate histories. And so it was meant to stay... in the beginning that is. But "Karma" wanted it different
After the unexpected warm reception of the first chapter the author decided to continue the story. She wrote the second and the third chapter intertwining the boys paths, added a few others and so the story took shape.
The author intertwines the lives of two men, best friends in the pas

I've always believed that I was a dragon stuck in human form. I always felt this draconic presence within me, coursing throughout my veins. I almost knew the feeling of flight with wings like the back of my hand, and the instincts that I possessed were a bit heightened compared to other people. When I would sleep, I would often see myself as a dragon, flying throughout my lands and feeling a sense of freedom. I would have many abilities that wouldn't be possible in the form of a human. Even though I knew I was a dragon, I would always keep it to myself because I knew that society, being as ignorant as it always was, would never accept the thought of having dragons roaming free in their world.
Of course, things changed after this fateful Friday, when everything I knew had a paradigm shift. After that day, my l

The blood has finally stopped flowing from my chest, the wound healing over with nothing but a jagged scar as a reminder of what I had done. I’m not quite sure what to do at this point, but I have to figure it out soon. Looking up into the night sky, I see the stars dying, one by one, as if an ever-advancing sheet of darkness was making its way across the heavens. The earth beneath me begins to rumble as I quickly read through the ancient script sprawled out in front of me.
“Ego manere hic,” I say, placing my hand over the white circle as instructed. A fierce light begins to glow as the still-beating muscle bursts into a brilliant white flame that reaches up towards my hand and begins to burn the flesh. I cry out in pain until it stops, the fire dying; nothing but ash remains.
I collapse backwards and grip my hand, studying the mark that had been seared into my body: a Celtic cross, wrapped by an i
