Photomanipulation Contest: Rebirth and Renewal

Journal Entry: Mon Jan 14, 2013, 11:55 PM

Welcome to the latest community competition for Photomanipulation!

This is the official kick-off blog for the latest, greatest EXTREME PHOTOMANIPULATION CONTEST here on dA! The contest is backed by communityrelations with HUGE prizes and hosted by CRPhotomanipulation. This journal describes the rules for the contest. Please read it carefully.

What we mean by "Extreme" photomanipulation

You should reach beyond your comfort zone and create a deviation that is bold, unique, and better than you thought you could create. Try something new. Break the mold. You've got this!

We have HUGE prizes. So, we are expecting HUGE results.

Theme: Rebirth and Renewal

Our theme, Rebirth and Renewal, was suggested by administrators of CRPhotomanipulation. You are hereby challenged to create a photomanipulation that shows rebirth and/or renewal. For example, it could show a transformation of sorts, being brought to life, or perhaps shedding the old to reveal something fresh and beautiful (or ugly!) beneath. Perhaps your transformation is into death, and you can show that. You should interpret what being reborn or renewed means to YOU and then depict it in a photomanipulation.

Time frame

The contest will be open for 2.5 months.

Contest opens: 15 January 2013
Contest closes: 1 April 2013, 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time (visit www.timeanddate.com to find out what time that is for you)

The Rules

Here are the rules in detail:

:bulletpink: Your entry MUST be a PHOTOMANIPULATION. That means it involves 2 or more photographic elements that have been combined to create something new. It is absolutely fine to have photomanipulations that have been painted over (and thus may technically be Mixed Media). SINGLE photographs that have ONLY been brushed or textured will not qualify. There must be at least 2 photographic elements. If you are in doubt, please check with us!

:bulletpink: No entries created before January 15, 2013 will be accepted. Entries must be new and specifically created for this competition.

:bulletpink: Contest closes at 11:59 PM PST on April 1st. No late entries will be accepted.

:bulletpink: *ALL* stock must be credited, including brushes. All stock must be from legitimate sources. If you don't know where the stock that was used to create your premade background came from, don't use it. If you don't know where the cutout stock came from, don't use it. We will decline all entries with questionable stock. If you don't know, ask. Direct links are NOT necessary, but they are always appreciated. See the stock reminder here.

:bulletpink: Collaborations are OK as long as all collaborators are credited, but if a prize is won, that prize will be split evenly among collaborators. If you are submitting a collaboration, you only need to submit the work once.

:bulletpink: You may enter up to TWO deviations, but you can only win once.

:bulletpink: Please include a statement in your artist's comments that you have created the deviation for the Rebirth and Renewal Photomanipulation Competition. Please link to this blog.

:bulletpink: There are special rules and requirements for some categories. Please carefully read the submission requirements below.

How do I submit?

There are three folders in CRPhotomanipulation that are open for submission: BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE, and ADVANCED. You should choose which level you feel is most appropriate for your art and submit to that folder. There are special rules and requirements for some categories. Please read below to find out which one is best for your work! If you have questions, please ask.

Here is the rubric and rules for deciding where to submit:

BEGINNING ARTISTS must demonstrate knowledge of:

:bulletgreen: Cutting out stock properly :bulletgreen:
:bulletgreen: Arranging pieces to tell a story (effective composition) :bulletgreen:
:bulletgreen: Must use at least 2 tutorials (and cite them in artist's comments). They can be on or off of dA. :bulletgreen:

INTERMEDIATE ARTISTS must demonstrate knowledge of:

:bulletblue: Composition :bulletblue:
:bulletblue: Color theory :bulletblue:
:bulletblue: Light and shadow :bulletblue:
:bulletblue: Proportions :bulletblue:

ADVANCED ARTISTS must demonstrate mastery of:

:bulletpurple: Light and shadow :bulletpurple:
:bulletpurple: Composition :bulletpurple:
:bulletpurple: Blending (you can't tell it is made from different images) :bulletpurple:
:bulletpurple: Perspective :bulletpurple:
:bulletpurple: Flair (the "wow!" factor) :bulletpurple:
:bulletpurple: Must have at least one aspect that either (1) has a sense of movement, OR (2) defies the law(s) of physics (for example: defying gravity, energy being created or destroyed, etc.). :bulletpurple:

ALL ENTRIES will also be judged based on:

:bulletpink: Impact
:bulletpink: Storytelling (Is your image just a pretty picture, or does it tell a story?)
:bulletpink: Creative interpretation of theme
:bulletpink: Originality
:bulletpink: Exceeding expectations (Is this a stand-out piece from your gallery?)

Submissions require one vote for approval. This is so that we can make sure they meet the contest rules; we are not screening for quality, etc.

To be clear, the admins of CRPhotomanipulation will NOT move your deviation or choose the category to which it is submitted. That is entirely up to the artist. We reserve the right to suggest that a piece of art be submitted to a higher category-- for example, an advanced artist should not submit to the beginner category.

Letting out a huff that appeared as a puff of smoke, Rukia turned toward Ichigo and asked, "Does it ever snow here in Karakura? It's cold enough for it."
Looking up from the bag of cookies he'd been munching on, he replied, "It does sometimes, but it's rare. It only snows every few years at best."
"That's a real shame. It's always so pretty when it snows," she said.
"I'm glad it doesn't snow! It's nothing but a pain in the ass when it does! The snow builds up and blocks roads, and then it turns into brown slush. I still remember my mom yelling at me for building a snowman out of slush," Ichigo replied. Though in the beginning he sounded so annoyed by the frozen rain, a slight somber tone took over on the last sentence. A saddened look washed over his eyes when he thought of that moment.

Planetary Mythology Photomanipulation Competition!

Journal Entry: Sun Sep 1, 2013, 11:56 AM

Mythology of the Planets

Welcome to the latest "dark" photomanipulation contest, supported by Community Relations here on deviantART. This contest will challenge you to think outside of the box, for you will have to not only create something, but you will need to do a bit of research and think about why you are creating it. :XD: Are you ready for a competition that is out of this world?

Before we go any further, let me clarify that PLUTO COUNTS!

What do I have to do?

Choose one of the planets (or Pluto) in our solar system, listed below. Moons or suns can be a part of the larger picture, but they do not count as your god/goddess.

Your job is to create a PHOTOMANIPULATION in which you show a myth around a planetary ruler (that is, the god or goddess after which the planets were named).

The gods/goddesses can be Greek, Roman, or other.... but they must be planetary rulers.

Here are the planets and their (Greek) influences; again, it's fine to use Roman or something else:

Mercury = Hermes, messenger god
Venus = Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty
Earth = Terra, goddess of land
Mars = Ares, god of war
Jupiter = Zeus, ruler of the gods
Saturn = Cronus, god of time
Uranus = Uranus, god of the sky
Neptune = Poseidon, god of the sea
Pluto = Hades, god of death and the underworld

If you're like me, you're totally confused right now. Take a moment to Google the stories about whatever planetary ruler seems most interesting to you.

Where do I submit it?

We will create a "Planetary Mythology" contest at CRPhotomanipulation.

Other rules

:bulletblack: Must be a photomanipulation-- e.g. use 2 or more sources put together to make something new. Mixed Media will be accepted if it involves manipulated photographs.

:bulletblack: Credit your sources, and only use legitimate sources. NO PREMADES OR CUT-OUT STOCK WILL BE ACCEPTED UNLESS IT EXPLICITLY STATES THAT THE ORIGINAL PHOTO(S) BELONG TO THE STOCK PROVIDER.

:bulletblack: Be creative.

:bulletblack: Do your own work.

:bulletblack: You can submit up to 2 entries, but you can only win once.

:bulletblack: DEADLINE: OCTOBER 15th, 2013, 11:59 PM PACIFIC TIME

Single Stock Challenge - Ends in a few days hurry!

Journal Entry: Wed May 15, 2013, 7:14 PM
:icontheartofmanipulation:

About Us | Request Feedback | Submission Rules

Hello from the admins of TheArtOfManipulation! It's time for a new Contest and this one is going to be BIG! :happybounce:

How it Will Work

For this contest, we are going to make things TOUGH. We will provide you with a list of stockers that you can choose from, however you only get to choose ONE stock artist and you must use all stock from that artist. And to make things even harder, you cannot use any human models, premade backgrounds, PNG cut-outs, or brushes (except the preset ones located in your software already). Also you MUST use a minimum of 3 stock images, there is no maximum :)

The Rules

Must be a member of TheArtOfManipulation in order to submit to the contest folder, make sure you read the rules and answer the 3 questions to join the group!

:bulletblack: Your entry MUST be a PHOTOMANIPULATION. That means it involves 2 or more (in this case 3 or more) photographic elements that have been combined to create something new. It is absolutely fine to have photomanipulations that have been painted over (and thus may technically be Mixed Media). SINGLE photographs that have ONLY been brushed or textured will not qualify. There must be at least 2 3 photographic elements. If you are in doubt, please check with us!

:bulletblack: No entries created before May 15, 2013 will be accepted. Entries must be new and specifically created for this competition.

:bulletblack: Contest closes at 11:59 PM CST on June 15th. No late entries will be accepted.

:bulletblack: ALL stock must be credited. We will decline all entries with questionable stock. Direct links are NOT necessary, but they are always appreciated.

:bulletblack: Collaborations are OK as long as all collaborators are credited, but if a prize is won, that prize will be split evenly among collaborators. If you are submitting a collaboration, you only need to submit the work once.

:bulletblack: You may enter up to TWO deviations, but you can only win once.

:bulletblack: Please include a statement in your artist's comments that you have created the deviation for the Single Stock Challenge. Please link to this blog.

You may submit to this folder: theartofmanipulation.deviantar…

Story Illustration Contest '13

Journal Entry: Thu Jan 17, 2013, 7:45 PM
After two successful, exciting, and fun years for my Illustration Contest, I might as well keep with the momentum! Usually I start it a few months later in the year, but this time I figure why wait? The third annual Story Illustration Contest is now officially underway!

The Rules

:bulletgreen:To enter, +fave this journal and +watch me so you can get updates for the contest. If you don't dig me, you can always un-watch once we're done.
:bulletgreen:Draw an illustration depicting a character, characters, or a scene from the selection of stories below.
:bulletgreen:You may enter as many times as you like!
:bulletgreen:Entries will be judged by faithfulness to the source material and complexity of the image.
:bulletgreen:In the description under your entry, include a link to the original story and this contest article.
:bulletgreen:Send your entries to me in a note so I can add them to this folder.
:bulletgreen:No bases! Entries must be completely made by you.

The Challenge

Pick your favorite story from the list below and draw a scene or characters from it! I try to be diverse in my writing; Action, drama, science fiction, romance, humans, robots... There should be something in there for everybody. Unfortunately, last year's chaos didn't allow me to be as proliferate as I would have liked, so there's more old favorites than new this time around. Some characters already have visual depictions, but some don't. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Some stories contain characters that belong to my friends, but feel free to draw them as well.

The Prizes

Fourth Place

Third Place

Second Place

[Note me if you're interested in donating to the prize pool.]

The Deadline

Now extended to April 18th!

The Stories!

Original Works

or Furor
Every year, spring brings new life and new opportunities, but with these also come new threats, new dangers. On a warm spring night, deep within a Montana forest, yet another of these primal dramas has come to fruition. Flora and fauna which had established their own footholds on life are trampled and pushed aside underneath three werewolves without a second thought. At this moment, The Chase is their only concern.
This deep within the forest, the green foliage is dense enough to snap back in the face of the immense brown werewolf charging his way through it. But he shrugs off the blows, his drive and focus more effective than any painkillers. His fur catches in the branches, leaving behind coffee-colored knots snared amongst the leaves, and even that barely slows down his pace. He feels like half a tree is tangled up within the braid that hangs off the back of his head. But as great a nuisance as the forest growth can be, it has to be doubly hindering for his quarry ahead. The disrupt

Meet Samson Phoenix, a young man with an inferiority complex, as he navigates through the inherent complexities of the life of a werewolf.

A super-powered soldier must recruit two delinquent elementals.
AlienatedOn an average morning, Joseph O'Donnell was the first thing his wife was aware of when she awoke: his large frame a source of comfort, even during this unsure point in their marriage. His right arm reliably wrapped around her, his left under the pillows to hide the stump where once a hand had been. How she missed him when he had served in Iraq. On those nights, the empty half of their bed might as well have been a vacuum.
This, however, was not an average morning – if it even was morning. Sarah O'Donnell sensed something amiss during her first glimpses of wakefulness – they were not on their bed, but a hard, flat surface. She aborted a slow drift out of sleep in favor of a straight-up leap into consciousness.
Panic threatened to grab hold as her eyes darted around to survey the dark room. There were no windows, no way of gauging the time of day. Only a few dim orange squares in the ceiling above them glowed with enough luminosity to keep the room from being pitch black. A fen

A war veteran, abducted by aliens, must chose between being human, and his humanity.
Legends
"Professor Sewell! Come quickly! You're not bloody going to believe this!"
Professor Elizabeth Sewell gave the intern a cross glare through her glasses. She was a middle-aged woman, with red hair just beginning to silver. She was not finicky about her appearance, yet she tried very hard to avoid the "stern librarian" appearance displayed by many of her colleagues. "Language, Mister Porter. If you wish to be a professional, you'll need to control that hasty tongue of yours."
"Right sorry," young Porter gasped obligatorily as he shoved aside both flaps that served as the door to her tent and beckoned her outside. He was a consummate portrayal of young adulthood: longish hair that constantly dangled over his brows, sloppily-shaven stubble, and lose, dirty clothes. Dark brown hair and eyes were the only color contrasting an otherwise pasty complexion. "But you must come see this! We've found something in the cave!"
Elizabeth sighed as she closed her archeology book, obviously in no hurry.

The archeological discovery of the century proves the existence of werewolves... or does it? This story ties in to the universe of the novel I'm writing.

Fan Fiction

The Fifty-Ninth MinuteWith increasing regularity, the Earth was coming under threat by alien menaces other than the Decepticons. It made sense, the Autobot known as Pyro supposed; the planet was both out of the way and ideally located, depending on where you were coming from. Or which way you were going. The universe was funny like that.
Pyro, in the guise of a firetruck, regarded the man that climbed inside him. He had a rather strange face, but not the strangest they had on file. (Personally, his favorite was the "teeth and curls" look.) This was a new face, all flat and nose and long hair. And his clothes were strange. He had always had questionable fashion sense, but it had always leaned more towards the old-fashioned and less towards the... hm, "singed raggedy."
"Hello, Doctor," the Autobot said once they were rolling. Pyro increased his speed; they hadn't much time.
The man looked surprised for a moment. He glanced towards the passenger seat and the seats behind him to see if he had missed anyone, but

A Doctor Who/Transformers crossover!
The ZooCybertronians did not experience grogginess. Unlike humans, there were no levels of consciousness; they were either offline or online. Moonhunter had tried to explain what it was like to Whiplash once, on a Saturday morning when her human brother Cassidy had been reluctant to get out of bed. But the young Maximal had not been able to fathom what it was like and she still couldn’t.
Although, when she snapped online to find herself in a dark cell, staring up at a barely-illuminated ceiling, she found herself wishing she could control her level of consciousness and go back offline without fully registering the freakishness into which she had just awoken.
She played back her most recent memories for some clue as to how she’d wound up here. There had a huge sphere in the sky, suddenly spearing out of nowhere while she scouted a valley on some remote planet. A blue light had illuminated her and then nothingness. It must have been a stun ray, or a tractor beam, or some efficient

When a young Maximal is kidnapped, how far will her creator go to rescue her?

"Commander!" The voice of Quarry cut through the static. No, that wasn't static, it was gunfire in the background. "There's someone in the generator room! We can't keep him pinned! He's invisible to our sens- No wait, he's transforming! He's cutting us down! Oh Primus he's-" Actual static. The line went dead.
First DateHenry “Beast” McCoy knew this arrangement aggravated Agent Brand. But she had recruited him for this “job” because of his different sensibilities, and thus had to defer to his judgment. Her profuse protests over the phone had given him an almost perverse sense of pleasure when he proposed the idea. Why couldn’t they just meet up at her apartment, she’d asked. He wasn’t “that kind of boy,” he’d answered. Eventually, she had no choice but to cave in to his demands.
And now they were on their first date. All soldier, she marched through the front door. Henry wondered if she was capable of turning it off. At least she had replaced the S.W.O.R.D. uniform with a gray pants suit... although for all Hank knew, she had it on underneath. Probably had it on underneath.
Always a gentleman, Henry stood and pulled her seat out for her. “I must say, Agent Brand,” Henry said, his baritone voice practically purring with smugness, &

A mutant superhero and a secret agent alien-mutant hybrid go out on their first date. What can possibly go wrong?
The Cat and the RatCybertron was a cold world of uniformity and order. As colorful as its people could be, the world that birthed them varied little from golds and grays and purples. This world, however, was in complete contrast to Cybertron: colorful, jagged, uneven, wild and unstable. It was a completely alien planet, and the Maximal now known as Tigatron felt completely like he belonged here. Its primal beauty filled the chasm in his soul that had haunted him since the earliest days of his life, when he had first learned there was life outside of Cybertron.
He knew his fellow Maximals didn't consider this world home. But there had been a point after awakening on this planet where it was all he knew. Since then, his memories had mostly been restored as his core processor mended, but all he could remember about Cybertron was how ill at ease he had felt there. He was one with this planet now, and he never wanted to leave.
In the visage of a white tiger, he remained rigid, a lone sentinel over the

We thought our cute stuffed Fella was getting a bit lonely, so we gave him a friend. Introducing the Super Llama Plushie, designed by our very own $ArtisticAunJuli! Comes complete with cape (and it's even removable!). Real flying ability sadly not included, but a Super Llama can dream, can't it? Check out $ArtisticAunJuli's exclusive interview below!

It depends on the complexity of the piece. Sometimes, even with a pattern, I mess up the stitching and have to start over. The first llama plush prototype took about four hours to sew, while the second took around seven hours. It was a lot of trial and error to figure out what would work and what wouldn't.

I started plushie-making in 2010, and I've made a fair few since. I create with a lot of media, and making stuffed animals was something I was inspired to try out after seeing all of the amazing plushie creators on deviantART. There's so much talent on dA.

From what I understand, they are hoof-sewn with the loving care of a unicorn and shipped in water-tight containers on the backs of an army of narwhals. I could be wrong, and if I am, that's disappointing, because everyone should have their plushies delivered via narwhal.
