Instagram Can Sell Your Photos Without Paying YouEDIT 19/12/12: Instagram has responded.
Though the language they use seems to want to overly passify rather than address issues. "Your photos are your photos and we respect that." is a nice sentiment but does not necessarily exclude "we have the right to license and use your stuff even though you own the content" By signing up to instagram you are giving them permission to do this even though you do technically own the content you are submitting.
I'm not going to flail my arms about doom, but I will say, artists be aware. Not just about this, but about any contracts you sign. There is some real sketchy language in the fine print here that needs to be clarified or changed as of right now. More than just an "everything's fine, don't worry" letter. Company lawyers have a tendency to try to take the largest chunk of whatever they can, and only back off when their actions are made public and they ar

The mummified remains of "Princess" Ukok, as the scientists named her, was discovered nearly twenty years ago in the Altai mountain range in East-Central Asia. Kept for all that time in Novosibirsk, Russia, it was not until very recently that she's been revealed to the rest of us. But among the general wonder and fascination that always comes with finding mummified and ancient bodies, Princess Ukok has another: She's covered in remarkably preserved, completely badass tattoos.
People have been tattooing themselves and each other for almost as long as humanity has existed; it just seems embedded in human nature to adorn our bodies in one way or another, whether through cheap drugstore eyeshadow or ancient ritual inking.
Princess Ukok and her warriors are believed to be members of the Pazyryk nomads who existed as early as the 5th century BC when they were
A Fat Female Superhero - Half WayWe've reached the halfway point for entries in the Fat Female Superhero contest. I must say, I am amazed at the support and commentary for such an event. I think that most people have realised that it's not about winning a prize, but about challenging the accepted norms of the industry and creating characters that we want to see represent us.A Fat Female Superhero - Half Way1 year ago in Personal More Like This
With such a loose contest structure, accepting any strong female protagonist who defies body conventions, I'm amazed at the diversity that has sprung up in the entries. I didn't want to constrain artists and have them create something that only I define as "fat". It was up to YOU to decide what the word "fat" and "fit" mean.
And really, "fat" is such a curious, loaded word. To many, it is an insult. "You're too fat." But everyone has fat. Some have a little, some have a lot. Some peopel interpreted the "fat female superhero" as someone who is overweight or obese. Some saw her as simply someone who has fat deposits on her body that exist outside he

Part 1: Submitting with POWER
I know there are a million "how to be popular" guides on DA and a million more parody versions of them. This article isn't about becoming popular, or starting drama or racking up pageviews as fast as possible for the sake of seeing a larger number.
This article won't make your art better, or make you more a more popular personality. However, what I've noticed is that many artists are missing out on feedback and exposure that they should be getting if not for a few common mistakes. Time after time, I've read on Artist's Confessions, or just browsing through members' personal journals that their gallery doesn't recieve any traffic and they can't improve because they're not getting any feedback. They feel like their lack of popularity is a personal statement. That their art isn't worth looking at. This is entirely untrue.
Hopefully this will help you, the underexposed artist, to b

Foreign Words the English Language NeedsOh hello. I’m finally getting around to making this news article that I said I might do, like, a month ago. Sorry, I’m not used to writing news articles. Bear with me.Foreign Words the English Language Needs1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
Back in August, I started a series in my forums for cool foreign words. It went over extremely well and numerous people requested that I combine them into a handy-dandy news article for deviantART at large to enjoy. So, here you are: fifteen foreign words that the English language needs to
What it means: A feeling of longing associated with displacement, but not necessarily displacement from one’s original home. An intense yearning to be somewhere you are not. Hiraeth also expresses a sort of ache or longing for something of the past, somewhat similar to the notion of "golden" or "good old days," but with more ancient connotations.
Why it needs to be a thing in English: I speak as someone from a country

Everyone has heard of it, everyone fears the very sight of it, but if you are an artist, there is a good chance it creeps at you regularly, more often than a flu, in various forms and intensity; in psychology, Frustration is a common emotional response to opposition / obstacle, is related to anger and disappointment and its strength depends on the size of the established challenge. When Frustration calls you more often than your mother does, it's time to take an action!

9 reasons to appreciate ACRYLICS1. UNIVERSALITY - Acrylic are probably the most versatile of paints. You can thin them with water and use as watercolor (they will remain permanent upon drying, unlike watercolor), apply them in full strength, create textures.9 reasons to appreciate ACRYLICS1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
2. COMBINABLE - This medium is very suitable to be combined with anything you wish - watercolor, ink, pencils, oils... Free your imagination and experiment!
3. NUMEROUS SUITABLE SURFACES - Acrylics can be used on paper, canvas, wood, metal and many more surfaces (this is true, even though they don't adhere towards some surfaces as promptly as oils). This is a great advantage, when you get used to this medium, you can paint at whatever material you've got available.
4. DON'T STINK - That's right, all of you that have experienced headaches caused by oil paint might just appreciate an acrylic vacation!
5. FAST DRYING TIME - Composition doesn't seem right after you put down your first layer? This is not a problem, wait half an hour

This week I received messages from two different people (through Etsy and Storenvy) offering to make a review of my work. They splattered huge statics, like having millions of instagram followers, popularity, or having done it before and making people famous. Of course, their generosity was conditioned by me agreeing to send them some of my work for free. While I don't object the concept of reviewing someone's work, I worry that this has become a popular way of scamming artisan crafters to give away their work for free with promises of exposure and increasing their sales. I wanted to write this journal to tell everyone to be careful, specially if you're just starting your business and struggling to get noticed, it may sound tempting but you should never give away your hard work!
One of them was even more blunt and said that he could write a positive review of my work just by

This attitude is not ok, for many reasons beside it being completely illogical.
1) You don't get to decide who is a geek or not a geek. Period. Geekdom is about acceptance, not rejection. If you're all about Not Liking Other People That Like The Stuff That You Like, you're not a geek, you're a hipster. Who found a pair of glasses.
2) You don't get to decide who is hot and who is not hot. That girl at the con with thick thighs and a little bit of muffin top? She is a perfect 10 in my book, bro. Except that women's bodies aren't up for the judging. Her attractiveness or lack therof does not define her geekiness. The same way that it does not define her social experience. Pretty
The Declaration of Rights of the BulliedYou have the right to feel pain and hurt when someone says or does something that hurts you, even unintentionally. The Declaration of Rights of the Bullied5 months ago in Art Features More Like This
You have the right to brush off someone else's words and actions and not allow them to affect your life.
You have the right to lose respect for someone who hurts you.
You have the right to be empathetic, and choose to understand that their words don't necessarily mean who they are.
You have the right to believe that someone is bullying you out of sheer sadistic cruelty.
You have the right to believe that sometimes the meanest people are those who are the most hurt inside.
You have the right to stand up for yourself in the heat of the moment. To call out behaviour that hurts you or others. To point fingers and say "This is wrong. This needs to change."
You have the right to stand up for yourself days, weeks, months or years after the fact. Sometimes you graduate from school and you and that bully are both in your 30s. Maybe they've matured. Maybe they haven't. You ha

STRONG TRIGGER WARNING FOR SEXUAL HARASSMENT AND ASSAULT
What does it mean to be a woman with a public online presence? A lot of the time it means finding like-minded people to make friends with, collaborate on projects with, and share your view of the world. A lot of the time it means sharing your presence and letting people know, "Yes! There are girls on the Internet!"
All of the time, it means a little bit of fear.
That fear is always riding just under the surface. On the outside, I can be casual, humorous, and love my life deeply and sincerely. But that doesn't make the fear go away. The fear is always there. It comes in the form of comments on my body when I ask people not to. It comes in the form of private messages asking for my facebook info or to "get to know me better". It comes in the form of being afraid to tell peop
It's All About Presentation (Mostly)As more and more people start taking pictures of their nether regions on their iphones or posing myspace style in front of their HTC's - the competitive world of getting a Daily Deviation gets just that much harder... I kid. But... daily, I am bombarded with awesome suggestions (which I love) and I'm not complaining about. But there has to be a criteria of sorts, that sets an image above the rest. Here are a few things I look for that you might not have noticed before... The first thing I look at when I stumble across an image or view a suggestion from somebody, is how the artist has presented their work to the deviantART Community. It's All About Presentation (Mostly)1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Your image isn't everything. Not anymore. In the past I have given Daily Deviations to pieces with titles that are a combination of random letters and numbers, or that are very obviously still the source file title - or that tends to be just a keyboard mash-up. Everyday CVs are sent many many notes suggesting pieces o
May 2013 - 31 day PAINTING challenge!UPDATE:May 2013 - 31 day PAINTING challenge!7 months ago in Art Features More Like This
This challenge was certainly a great experience for me. I made some mistakes that cost me a lot of time, for example sometimes I spent 5 hours on a piece that turned out wrong and instead of moving on I took a new paper and tried to make new work within the remaining hour or so. During second week, I've decided to keep the scrap works a part of my challenge, even though I won't publish them they still appear as a thumb on my challenge table. It's simply not possible for me to do 7 good pieces sometimes. Also, posting every day took way too much time to keep up, so I've decided I will be publishing remaining artworks through June continuously.
What I learned during this project of mine? It gave me a better idea about how much time I spend on one piece and what amount of time I waste on post-production. I had to make a few arrangement that hopefully make me more effective today. But mostly, I've tried new subjects that I totally LOVE, mostly architecture and flow

No One Cares About Your StoryGOOD NEWS: This is perfectly normal! No One Cares About Your Story11 months ago in Literature Features More Like This
I can't remember the source, but a few years ago I read this famous author's account of how it felt to have his first book come out, and he mentioned buying a copy himself because he was afraid no one would take an interest. Now this is a guy who managed to get not only an agency but a publisher (which is a whole pile of people who were like yesplz), and he's still afraid readers won't care. I was like, 'whoa mind blown.'
But anyway, the fact is that we are all strangers on the Internet and, by default, there is no reason for you to read my stuff or vice-versa. If you went and stood in Times Square with copies of your latest story, how many people would give you more than a passing glance? And how many of those people would get to the end of your work, and how many of those would offer critical feedback?
And, if you were one of the passersby, whom would you stop for?
Okay, I'm done scaring the shi
