Secrets On How ToAlright I guess I'm gonna make another rant, and this one's been bugging me for the longest time. And I'm going to be as BLUNT as I will be and not sugar coat anything I'm about to say.Secrets On How To2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Often do I hear things like:
"what custom brushes do you use"
"how do you achieve this blur/ focus effect"
"how did you get the colors to go this way and that"
"what technique or computer program did you use"
What I rarely get asked for is:
"What did you study to be more efficient at drawing."
"What is an efficient way to study how to render certain types of materials"
"How do you practice proper lighting when painting?"
Guys I'm just gonna say it now, there's no shortcut to art. I work primarily in digital mediums now but I do have a solid foundation in traditional mediums. I didn't simply go out and buy a $400 tablet and instantly got to where I am today. I use custom brushes and special effects in my pieces, but they only take up less than 3% of the overall work. There's sti

How To Deal With ART BLOCKSOk, if you guys are still wondering, this post may help you. Its just a way I go on about it.How To Deal With ART BLOCKS3 years ago in Personal More Like This
First of all, what is an art block? Just like writer's block, an artist gets an art block. Its a state where you either; can't think of anything to draw, your drawings turn out crap, you're just not getting your drawings right, or just uninspired.
So how do I deal with it?
The very first thing you MUST do is to actually STOP DRAWING. This is your brain telling you to take a break.
If you force yourself out of an art block, it ALWAYS shows. It will look rushed or unthought of.
Second, is try and do something else NOT related to art/creativity... Go for a run, watch TV, read a book, play games, see friends etc.
Third; try and listen to music. Calm your brain and get rid of your thought process. Music is a way of simulation, sometimes you will get inspiration from it.
If you have an idea of what sort of thing you're after but just cant get it right in the end, this is where I think music helps. E
The reason non Japanese Manga isn't doing well!I have been waiting to address this topic again for some time now. I don't think a lot of you realize what's really going on with Manga here in the states and for those who do manga that are not Japanese. So for everyone who aspires to try manga for any reason and want it to be a success or stick out from the garbage heap. You may want to listen to what i have to say. Take notes and open your mind, if you have a closed mind then i advise you to be open. This may not be the journal post for you if you are closed minded. Ok now that's out of the way let's begin. The reason non Japanese Manga isn't doing well!5 months ago in Personal More Like This
For those of you who don't know your history Ameri Manga was a thing. It started off in the what early 2000's. Well it failed miserably needless to say for whatever reason. Ok so Then Bleach comes out and there's this huge jump in fans and amateur artist wanting to make their own personalized manga. So credit Bleach for this huge leap and jump for others to try and produce their own manga.
Now we fast forward to today

There are a few rules, not many - but enough to make it fair. The rules are as follows...
You MUST be the artist of the original piece, you cannot steal, borrow or "acquire" from elsewhere on the web (stealing sucks!)You can use your own characters, mainstream comic characters, Manga, Anime and Video-game characters. Choice is yours. You can submit pencils, inks and line arts - no colors! Otherwise it's pointless even entering! We will link you when we add the final winner to our portfolio, so we would expect the same shout back, just a credit to the work we have done.Nudes are fine, but anything more "distasteful" will be frowned upon, no matter how great the work is. Fetish, tickling and soft stuff is allowed.

Paranoia and a sense of impending doom.
The "party game" I just picked up should do the trick.
Each player gets a Nerf gun, the name of a target and the location in the house where they have to shoot them at some point over the course of the evening.
Nothing says "Christmas" like an assassination contract.

Wacom Tablet Left-Click Delay Problems - Windows 7I am using Windows 7 64-bit. But this would probably also apply to 32-bit users. My tablet is a Wacom Bamboo Pen and Touch. But, again, this would probably apply to all other Pen Tablet products, even those not made by Wacom.Wacom Tablet Left-Click Delay Problems - Windows 74 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've had issues with delays when clicking with my pen. Whenever I left-click anywhere on the screen with the tip of the pen and trying to drag, there was always a half-second delay before the pen performs the correct action. This was especially annoying when trying to paint in Photoshop or sculpting a 3d model in Mudbox or just performing any click-and-drag action in general.
I have asked about this issue sometime ago. Wacom suggested minimizing the double-click distance in the Pen Tablet settings. But most of the solutions I found on the internet, including those from Wacom, involved turning off the Tablet PC Input Service, only to cause further complications such as the service restarting upon reboot of the computer even though the service is labeled "stopped" i

Concept vs Visual AestheticRecently, on my piece I got into an interesting discussion that I find would be of importance to some of my watchers, despite the person being helpless in said discussion and just looking to waste their time.Concept vs Visual Aesthetic7 months ago in Personal More Like This
Basically, I encountered yet another person who cannot grasp the difference between concept and visual aesthetic, and is quick to brand any widespread concept as similar to some popular piece of media that utilized such a concept.
I personally define visual aesthetic in concept art as series of image elements, art techniques and stylistic patterns that unify an array of objects in art into a single, wholesome, stand-out microcosm which is recognized by these elements. It's what allows us to relate a piece of art to a certain time period ("that's so 80's!"), a culture ("typically oriental stuff!") or movement ("absolutely baroque!").
A concept, on the other hand, is a concept – an idea made into flesh. The concept might have a definitive visual aesthe

Many of you have been asking me for something like this for years, so I'm really excited to make this announcement! Thanks to my handsome husband, cairn4, we now have a beta version of SenshiStock Sketch, a web app for gesture and sketching practice using SenshiStock images. You can also think of it as a SenshiStock randomizer!
Here's what it looks like and how it works:
Check it out here:
There's only 463 images right now, but I will be adding more soon. You have the option to change the timer and there's a link to visit the full image on DA if you want to work from it for a bit longer (you can also pause the timer to keep the current image up longer). This site should work fairly well on most mobile devices too, but please give us feedback if you run into any technical issues!

Things you should never ask an Artist to doI write this to not spark a debate or judgement, only to share my personal opinion and experience in hopes of benefiting you and offering insight to people thinking about hiring an artist.Things you should never ask an Artist to do2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Things you should never ask an Artist to do:
1. Free Work.
Do I really have to explain this one? You wouldn't walk into any other business offering a service and ask for free clothes or a burger right? No, you pay for them without question and they take a lot less creativity, time to make and cost a lot less. Why ask people to work for free on something you couldn't make yourself? If you believe in your vision, then I suggest find funding for it to pay the people doing the work for you. This goes for family as well, don't get me wrong, I love my family and enjoy doing something for them but it means so much more when I OFFER to do something for free than when it's expected. Let the artist decide whether or not they want to give their time for free without asking them, as a rule treat them with res
Writing Effective DialogueWe've all struggled through figuring out how to write dialogue that not only gets the information out there, but also helps build characters or advance the plot. There are tons of books and blogs out there on the topic, too. But just reading about it doesn't do much good if we're not ready to try it out. Give it a go and see what other people think. But let's start with the basics.Writing Effective Dialogue1 month ago in Deviant Events More Like This
What is Effective Dialogue?
Dialogue that's written well will reveal character traits, add to the tension and suspense, helps cut down on text walls of description and of course, advances your plot. One of the most important things to keep in mind when you're writing dialogue is that in fiction, your reader doesn't want to read all the mundane things we say on a regular basis. So if it's not moving the plot or adding to your character's personality, you should think about cutting it completely.
What do I mean by reveals character traits?

Type vs Typo - The Rocket Man Mash-upRay Bradbury was an inspiration to many artists and writers alike, leaving behind many famous and thought-provoking quotes after his death. Halloween was also one of the topics he wrote about most. What better way to celebrate the onset of ghost story season than with a tribute to one of the finest American storytellers in the form of inspired work presented both through art and literature. At the end of this journal is a real treat; a video that shows just how far Bradbury's literature reached.Type vs Typo - The Rocket Man Mash-up1 year ago in Literature Features More Like This

I agree with this post but I've never told anyone to not to go to art school or university.
People ask me all the time what school do I go to (ALL THE TIME). I always respond "just a cheap state university", but it kinda of bugs when people want me to be specific when it really doesn't matter.
I don't like the bureaucratic system in my university. I think taking GE classes are a waste of time and should only count as electives. I hate how the university uses the horrible methods to teach us art since it never works. I hate how the Art Department does not offer a lot of classes compared to other departments.
I took over five Animation classes and none of them helped me. What helped me was studying from the "Preston Blair Animation book". I studied it on my own time when I was doing an internship in Florida (nothing to do with my career but it was fun).
I've seen students struggle because they were not taught properly how t

On March 1, 2012 the Nevada DMV issued the first license for a Google Driverless Car. The idea behind this innovation is that one day soon new technology will drive cars safer and more skillfully than humans, thus saving lives and billions of dollars in car crashes. How well this idea catches on is a bit questionable, given the powerful “romance” of driving one’s car, but it’s certainly an indicator of things to come in the daily intersection of human and artificial intelligence and mobility. There have always been those who have dreamed of stepping into a mechanical exo-skeletal-type “suit” and letting the engineering do the work, insta

But! What a surprise! By the sharp rebuttal of my friend, whenever an asian giant like Applibot throws a job at these progressives, they go and draw all the ginormous booty, wasp-thin waists and nonsense bouncy boob armor in kinky poses that they so vehemently chastise in others. Suddenly, not a single fuck about "womYn" and "RESPEC" is given - who cares when you got a couple thousand bucks for a pair of illustrations? Jesus, gotta give it to Asians.
