I agree with this post but I've never told anyone to not to go to art school or university.
People ask me all the time what school do I go to (ALL THE TIME). I always respond "just a cheap state university", but it kinda of bugs when people want me to be specific when it really doesn't matter.
I don't like the bureaucratic system in my university. I think taking GE classes are a waste of time and should only count as electives. I hate how the university uses the horrible methods to teach us art since it never works. I hate how the Art Department does not offer a lot of classes compared to other departments.
I took over five Animation classes and none of them helped me. What helped me was studying from the "Preston Blair Animation book". I studied it on my own time when I was doing an internship in Florida (nothing to do with my career but it was fun).
I've seen students struggle because they were not taught properly how t

Dreamworks CritiqueI'm pitch my storyboards in front of professional artists at my university on Thursday night.Dreamworks Critique2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Is it normal that I'm not nervous? Maybe I'm not thinking about it to clearly.
Maybe it's because that I work with a boss who critiques me all the time and is hard on me.
Or maybe I already know the outcome of the whole scenario. I definitely doubt the Dreamworks crew will like me. That doesn't mean I don't care. I do try my best for any audience. But in my mind it's like "I know I'm gonna look like an idiot so I might as well try my best and smile. Dreamworks may not like me but oh well"
Did I mention it's finals weeks and I'm freaking out? Maybe that's the case. It's not just one thing I have to worry about. I have other assignments to finish and I don't have the time to focus entirely on one.
I don't know I'm just so tired....
Live the dream, don't talk about it!Doug TenNapel, independent comics creator, is an inspiration to me in many ways. He has a fun, accessible art style that is dramatic and fresh. His story telling is always askew in the best of ways. I don't think I've read one of his graphic novels without having some smiles and a surprise or two along the way. On top of that, he is outspoken about almost everything in his life. (I think of him as the Rush Limbaugh of comics- oh man, that sounds really bad, but early Rush, not present day Rush, if that helps.) I agree with most things he states on Facebook. BUT- the thing I am most inspired about him is his drive (in the old days we would call that "work ethic"). The guy does NOT give up. Because of that, he single-handedly will put out a new graphic novel a year. While creating a webcomic. While pitching new TV show development ideas in Hollywood. While running a half marathon. While working freelance jobs.Live the dream, don't talk about it!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
interview with LA WeeklyI am extremely honored to have been interviewed for LA Weekly, and included in their People 2012 issue "People 2012" with the likes of Liz Meriwether and Carrie Fisher and many other fascinating Los Angel-ites. The interview was fun to do, and I'm relieved the photo turned out so nicely.interview with LA Weekly3 years ago in Personal More Like This

I was very proud of it but this was completely unexpected! A huge thanks to *Lazulelle for suggesting it and to ^KasumiCR for featuring it. And thanks to everyone else for the sweet comments and favs.
In other news, my cat is getting better. And I saved some money for his next appointment. We're still keeping an eye on his bottom lip since we're still not 100% sure what caused it.
And in just a few minutes, I'm going to San Diego for my cousin's wedding.
Also the commissions are going great! Some of you guys requested more than just a pencil character sketch so it's taking some time.
I think I'm forgetting something else.... Oh well probably not important

Exhausted from CTNIt was a fun weekend and I'm glad I got to go inside, free of charge, just to help John and the crew demonstrate how Toon Boom works!Exhausted from CTN2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I walked around and met some wonderful friends. I finally met the wonderful twins Eli and Oli, who are adorable and I can't get enough of them. I wish I hung with them more.
I even met friends that I'd thought I would see. My high school animator teacher, my professor from Animation I John McIntyre (artist from Powerpuff Girls, Dextar's Lab, Flapjack), my friends from high school or friends that I have know for ages.
I also got to meet my heroes Katie Rice and Gabe Swarr. I was incredibly nervous but they were sweet and funny. I couldn't face other amazing artists like Pascal Campion and Britney Lee so I'm really glad I got the courage to meet those two.
I also made new friends who enjoyed my work. Sorry to those if I seemed busy or spazzed out. I'm very weird and I was probably in the zone that time on Toon Boom.

How can a cartoonist keep motivated and inspired?A friend asked me: “How do you motivate yourself to keep drawing? Lately I have been lacking that. One of the reasons is that I feel afraid of making mistakes in my drawings not to mention that I sometimes feel inferior when I compare my drawings to other artists (particularly those who make illustrations and cartoons)”How can a cartoonist keep motivated and inspired?1 year ago in Personal More Like This
One thing that keeps me drawing is having to. If I don’t have an FRS done every week, the readers get ornery, and so I have something I need to get done every week, whether I like what I’ve made or not.
But sometimes I feel uninspired or just plain don’t like what I’m turning out. This happened just a week ago. There’s a few things I like to do in this instance.
-Sometimes I just find some drawings I really like and try to quickly draw their construction. No details, just the construction. This is an especially good technique if there are particular artists you want more influence from:

To those of you who chose to interpret the ending differently or saw it as ambiguous, the Word of God(s) has come to say "This is what it was, is, and forever shall be."
But I think the majority of us were on the same page with what that final scene meant and how wonderful (and validating to many people's lives) it was. And for us I say: THREE CHEERS!
Because of a couple comments I've seen around (the web, my comics, this journal) that seem to take some issue with the ending, saying they either just didn't like the politica
"Drawing for Yourself"I've heard this tons of times and I do agree with it at some point. But I think there are different ways of explaining it."Drawing for Yourself"3 years ago in Personal More Like This
As far as where I am now, I realize that I do not just draw for myself, but for everyone else. The most important element in my life are the people that have supported me for years. My friends, family, my followers, just everybody.
To be honest, I feel a lot better when I draw for everyone else instead of for myself. I love seeing the reaction on their faces and I am always eager to hear their full honest opinion. I want to know what they love, why they love it, and how does a certain thing make them happy.
All these months since 2011 I have been basically training myself to be a "giver". I draw for you guys. Even if it's original work of my own, I look for your reactions, whether they are good or bad. It helps me observe what I'm doing right and how can I improve. Before I even begin a sketch, the first thought that crosses my mind is "how can I impress
Something I just need to say...Well, this is something that has gone through my head for a while since of some...personal incidents of people I know. People within this beautiful community of writers united in a mutual geeky love of writing Death Battles, battles between fictional characters in duels to the death.Something I just need to say3 months ago in Personal More Like This
I've enjoyed some time as a writer, and earning some popularity and praises that I frankly think I don't really deserve. Honestly...I just see myself as nothing more but a guy from Illinois who has way too much time on his hands writing these fights. I don't care about being in the limelight; I just enjoy working on the research, as much of a bitch it is, and writing the overall fight, as much of a bitch that could be as well.
But...some personal incidents have occurred with some of fellow people in the community. I won't be naming who, but some of them have felt a sense that they aren't good enough for writing Death Battles. That people's' expectations are far too high for them and feel that they can't
What Makes a Great Villain?"The enemy? His sense of duty was no less than yours, I deem. You wonder what his name is, where he came from. And if he was really evil at heart. What lies or threats led him on this long march from home. If he would not rather have stayed there...in peace. What Makes a Great Villain?5 months ago in Personal More Like This
War will make corpses of us all."
-Return of the King
I've been asked this on more than one occasion by more than one friend so...here's my interpretation.
In order to be an effective, memorable villain to me a character must be just that initially...
It doesn't matter how much nifty armor or flashy powers you pile on: nothing comes close to the impact of a person who turns to the dark side, perhaps from his own volition, perhaps because of circumstances. A villain is not exempt from having no internal motivations, no logical decision making, no personal attitude. What is a villain who just laughs maniacally and strides about intoning the plot and nothing beside usually called even by the most forgiving of review

How Do I Time ManageI feel terrible that I've gotten sweet messages from you guys and I never responded to each of them. How Do I Time Manage1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Thank you all so much! Your messages, all of them, made me very happy! Again I'm sorry that I've been mopey and silly. This actually happens a lot but I've tried to repress it until it builds up and I end up in a huge mess.
Things are a bit busy right now. Between going to a summer course, taking care of a baby kitten, and community service at an animal shelter for a few weekends, I've had trouble organizing myself.
I'm not so great at time management and remaining focused, but I'd like to change that. I'd also like to work on a couple projects before the year ends, so I'm starting off with small ones. I've got so much planned!!
And I have been stressed with my university, but my dad and I paid off my tuition the last semester ever!! It wasn't wasn't easy but the nightmare is finally over.
And to those wondering if I'm okay...... I'll find a way. I just need to make some changes and

I'm learning so much.
I hope to show you guys soon what we worked on. We're suppose to finish next week.
I love my job.
Edit: Holy crap so many comments you guys are wonderful.
For those you wondering how he met. He commented last year that he loved my artwork. Then this year (couple months ago), I drew his character Sody Pop, and my amazing friend Keegan :iconconkertheking: showed it to John. Next thing you know, he contacted me and we ended up meeting face-to-face. And now I intern for him.

GODZILLA (2014) review - The Showa Must Go OnGODZILLA (2014) has hit theaters, and for months (years for most Godzilla fans), potential audiences have been anticipating a return to form for the Lizard King - a film that will revisit the themes of the 1954 original and deliver a brooding, apocalyptic story of destruction and doom.GODZILLA (2014) review - The Showa Must Go On7 months ago in Personal More Like This
Instead, what we got could best be described as a sequel to THE TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA (1975).
Trust me, I wouldn't begin a review with a hyperbolic, attention-grabbing statement like that without explaining it. For the moment, let us turn back the clock and toss out a quick recap of the film's plot. Obviously, this review will contain a metric crapload of SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS, but you'll complain anyway, so let's get on with this.
After a mysterious event in 1954 regarding the Castle Bravo nuclear test and an unknown giant organism, the story jumps to 1999, where two scientists, Dr. Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) and Dr. Graham (Sally Hawkins) are investigating a massive underground tomb in the
