We want to especially thank an elite core of Odyssey II writers:
Those deviants truly embodying the spirit of the project by continuing to create and submit next chapters – no matter the story’s refusal to go along with their proposed direction. The zeitgeist is a powerful force, but the artist must know when to sail against the been-there-done-that. And our writers, artists and poets have been doing that week after week. So many artists and writers continue to send in wonderful material week after week.
We have decided to extend the writing deadline for the last chapter to December 31 and we're

ast week we published the video of Josh Wattles, makepictures Fan Art Law panel from Comic-Con. An educative, passionate and very enlightening conversation soon followed in the comments section. You can participate in that conversation here.
This week the superstars of deviantART panel will provide unique insight and advice for artists on the rise in the deviantART community.
Being a member of the deviantART community might be the most important support system a young artists could ever hope to have. That being said, there is also the problem of finding a way to stand out when surrounde

Odyssey Propulsion 5We have decided to extend the writing deadline for the last chapter to December 31 and we're expanding the Word count to 800 words for our final chapter! Artists will then have two full weeks to illustrate our final chapter - meaning artwork for Chapter 8 will be due by January 14, 2013. Any Animations/films and poetry deadlines are now extended until Jan 14! We will then unleash, I mean publish, this tale of Paul’s very unexpected journey!Odyssey Propulsion 52 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
The final battle to block Tal’shen’s launch of the takeover of Earth. Paul, from whose own body Tal’shen, the gelatinous beaked tentacled monster, was gestated and born. Paul says he knows how to destroy the creature. And who better than he, he being half “mother” of the monster.
So now 800 words, give or take, is the space we have to wind up our story, a story that has expanded and mutated like the first bit of subway vomit that was Paul’s ticket into what has now swollen to Lovecraf
Odyssey Update 1This first weekend of reading and re-reading Odyssey selections was just as intensely rewarding as last year. I am incredibly grateful to once again be able to share this process with all of you. Having Clive Barker on board for Odyssey II is truly an enlightening and educative experience. There is nothing more thrilling than reading through each of the entries and then re-reading the chapters that truly resonate and carry with them immense writing skill. This story could have gone in so many worthy directions and genres, and there was no end to the creativity and storytelling skill on so many of the submissions.Odyssey Update 12 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
The people in my life were adequately warned, but there were still those that questioned my sanity and work methods as I stayed up for the duration of the weekend meticulously poring over eachof the entries... then starting over and reading them again.
CEA Blog: Mature ContentHey guys, today I want to talk about Mature Content on deviantART and hopefully clear up some misconceptions that exist around it. All members over the age of 18 can choose to enable or disable the mature content filter to suit their needs. All members with a registered date of birth under the age of 18 have the mature content filter locked on and can not disable it. All logged out visitors have the mature content filter enabled and can not disable it.
The mature content filter is split in to two types, strict and warning. The strict filter is completely voluntary and prevents any deviant with the mature content filter on from accessing the work. The general or warning filter is the standard mature content tag and will remove the image from immediate view when browsing and place an warning page on the devi
Authentic CitizenshipOnce Again, The Room Fell Away. The prodigious artistic and cultural exchange that we have all committed ourselves to building, to participating in and to sharing with each other every day at deviantART often occurs in RL on the decks of HQ as well. One of the best aspects of being in my position here at deviantART is the privilege to curate salons with artists of every medium and success level imaginable, art appreciators, writers, and educators from all points of light within the deviantART community inviting them to make the trek to HQ for what always manifests as an inspiring, thoughtful, educative, and enlightening dialogue. But sometimes, sometimes, things rise to a whole other level. At the beginning of the week, the dT team worked on improving our internal development tools to increase efficiency. Then, on Wednesday, we let any staff members at the retreat pitch fun and exciting ideas for deviantART features that could be built in two days. After each feature idea was pitched, everyone from dT chose which projects they'd like to work on. Throughout the year, engineers primarily work on projects that are assigned to them, so sometimes it's important to turn the tables and let them choose projects in which they're most passionate and excited about.

Whose story will Paul trust – Maya’s or Lysanna’s?
Is Paul really just a random victim or has there always been a special fate or predetermined bit of prophecy awaiting him which is now about to be revealed?
There are only three more chapters left, three delicious spaces to be filled in our attempt to achieve literary immortality… Well, at least, in our attempt to achieve creating a story to be told around summer campfires to scare the hell out of the new kids. What we need is a mind-melting fate or test to now be revealed to Paul, one which he must decide to accept or take flight from, one with worldwide consequences for the human race as well as Paul’s own singular soul, one with a real possibility of leaving only eternal madness as its legacy. For many of us, the first “art gallery” to command our attention (and constant, even daily, monitoring) in our

The Film Poster has existed since the earliest days of silent movies and the pulse-elevating excitement of the

still packs a psychic punch throughout movie lovers today.

PE: Tolerance Towards Daily DeviationsIf you're like me, one of the first things you do every morning is turn on the computer to check the DDs for the day, if you make this a habit sooner or later you'll see something featured that you won't like at all, making you spill your morning coffee all over the screen.PE: Tolerance Towards Daily Deviations3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Oh the crime! That poor coffee going to waste.
Before you hit the Caps Lock button and begin an essay about the drop of quality of DDs, stop. Take a deep breath, maybe walk around for a bit to cool down, and think about what you're going to do. To begin with, complaining about the DD leaving a comment is extremely disrespectful for the artist because most of the time, they didn't even ask to be featured. Instead, take a moment to consider why was it picked, DDs are chosen for far more than just being visually attractive, as the article Daily Deviations - The Myth and the Legend explained; we often look f

The Enduring Enigma of CollageFebruary 21, 2013/by techgnoticThe Enduring Enigma of Collage2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Collage is one of those art forms that immediately sets off heated debate about our most fundamental ideas and visceral feelings about the very essence of art itself.
Turn of the century troublemakers Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso began enhancing their paintings with glued on bits of cut out fabric and other materials, thus neatly blurring the line between the art categories of painting and sculpture. They shifted the emphasis or “meaning” of their painted images beyond an attempted interpretation of the painted “text” to thinking about the artists’ “process” – something wholly separate from the paintings themselves.
And with that a whole new Rubic’s Cube of basic questio

Street photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson called it the “decisive moment”— the captured instant when all the photograph’s elements come together to tell a story in a way a text narrative of thousands of words could never begin to. It is what hooks people, both practitioners and advocate-devotees, on the art form. It is uniquely completely immersive in life— step out into the streets— in which the moment of artistic epiphany can never be guessed at until it suddenly happens. When it is properly mastered, it is as pure as the dawn of each new day, as true as the living organism of a teeming street scene catching a breath as one.

Change to Literature Preview Images
Preview images for literature deviations are now placed within a scrolling literature thumb. In the past, any preview image a deviant set would take the place of the scrolling literature thumb, making it difficult to distinguish visual art thumbnails and literature thumbnails.
This change allows for a more uniform thumbnail appearance around the site while also ensuring that each artist is still able to comfortably represent their work.
