We want to especially thank an elite core of Odyssey II writers:
Those deviants truly embodying the spirit of the project by continuing to create and submit next chapters – no matter the story’s refusal to go along with their proposed direction. The zeitgeist is a powerful force, but the artist must know when to sail against the been-there-done-that. And our writers, artists and poets have been doing that week after week. So many artists and writers continue to send in wonderful material week after week.
We have decided to extend the writing deadline for the last chapter to December 31 and we're
A Contest in Time A Milestone of the New AgeWhen deviantART and Five Four decided to let the community take the lead, it is only with the passage of time and chance moment of retrospective that the memories of an event from a decade past reveal that event to have been a harbinger of things to come – a prescient preview but of how people would very soon be changing the way they live their lives, and even defining their lives; a fundamental turn in what is to be valued in life and how to live it. The event of note occurred at the dawn of a new century and involved a group of young men were starting up a new apparel company not so much as a way to get rich (the old century paradigm) but as a way to express themselves and their lifestyle (the new century paradigm).A Contest in Time A Milestone of the New Age2 years ago in DeviantART Announcements More Like This

This year was especially important to me personally and was a milestone of sorts on
multiple levels and for deviantART as a whole. Many of the reasons why will become clear
over the next few months as announcements are made and new ideas are shared with everyone
in the community.

They are the three words that roil the senses like no others, that stir an inner emotional stew of mixed emotions that inscribes us, for both good and bad, for a lifetime. It's the inevitable arrival of late summer and the call to the classrooms that makes us tremulously anticipate the new anxieties and challenges that are about to be sprung upon us – but also the sweet rewards of ascending to new levels in pursuit of a life goal. For visual artists on their personal missions to achieving their own unique visions of success, in art and life, it is once again time to seek out the guiding wisdom of the old masters as well as the new kids with all the new tricks of the trade.

Authentic CitizenshipOnce Again, The Room Fell Away. The prodigious artistic and cultural exchange that we have all committed ourselves to building, to participating in and to sharing with each other every day at deviantART often occurs in RL on the decks of HQ as well. One of the best aspects of being in my position here at deviantART is the privilege to curate salons with artists of every medium and success level imaginable, art appreciators, writers, and educators from all points of light within the deviantART community inviting them to make the trek to HQ for what always manifests as an inspiring, thoughtful, educative, and enlightening dialogue. But sometimes, sometimes, things rise to a whole other level. You suddenly find yourself magically reaching that special deviantART "destination" that is a connection point of art, life, community and communication that has no specific Office # designation. CEA Blog: Mature ContentHey guys, today I want to talk about Mature Content on deviantART and hopefully clear up some misconceptions that exist around it. How the mature content filter works
All members over the age of 18 can choose to enable or disable the mature content filter to suit their needs. All members with a registered date of birth under the age of 18 have the mature content filter locked on and can not disable it. All logged out visitors have the mature content filter enabled and can not disable it.
The mature content filter is split in to two types, strict and warning. The strict filter is completely voluntary and prevents any deviant with the mature content filter on from accessing the work. The general or warning filter is the standard mature content tag and will remove the image from immediate view when browsing and place an warning page on the devi

The Tree as Beautiful MachineWhile searching deviantART for images for the Earth Day article, I became intrigued with how trees have become not only such a central focus of our current environmental concerns, but also how they play such a central role in our art, whether as background or actual subject matter. There are so many Enchanted Forests on deviantART that it made me wonder if trees, so mundane and taken for granted yet at the same time so vital to life on earth and so steeped in myth, have always been the revered subjects of the world’s artists. The Tree as Beautiful Machine2 years ago in DeviantART Announcements More Like This

Daily Deviations, or “DDs,” are frequently held in very high esteem on deviantART. After all, what artist does not want his or her work displayed for more than 20 million viewers to see and admire? The benefits of receiving a DD feature include increased exposure for your work and a day in the spotlight for you as an artist. Many people therefore view DDs as badges of honor, awards that make them proud and validate the time they spend in our community.
Be careful what you wish for!
Don’t get us wrong-- DDs are wonderful for the purposes listed above. But, they can also bring a lot of drama upon the artist, especially if they are controversial.
Let’s talk about some of the sources of this drama.
Some people feel that people who post art-- and especially those whose art is worthy of a Daily Deviation-- should have thick enough skin to accept criticism as well as praise. They argue that criticism is part

Oh the crime! That poor coffee going to waste.
Before you hit the Caps Lock button and begin an essay about the drop of quality of DDs, stop. Take a deep breath, maybe walk around for a bit to cool down, and think about what you're going to do. To begin with, complaining about the DD leaving a comment is extremely disrespectful for the artist because most of the time, they didn't even ask to be featured. Instead, take a moment to consider why was it picked, DDs are chosen for far more than just being visually attractive, as the article Daily Deviations - The Myth and the Legend explained; we often look f

At the beginning of the week, the dT team worked on improving our internal development tools to increase efficiency. Then, on Wednesday, we let any staff members at the retreat pitch fun and exciting ideas for deviantART features that could be built in two days. After each feature idea was pitched, everyone from dT chose which projects they'd like to work on. Throughout the year, engineers primarily work on projects that are assigned to them, so sometimes it's important to turn the tables and let them choose projects in which they're most passionate and excited about.
