The worst part was, he knew this. He'd always paled in comparison to his older brother and, honestly, he hadn't minded. Lucas had been born in the Stone Kingdom and he was just as well-versed and refined as anyone from there.
Jeremy, on the other hand, was soft. Born and raised in Atelpo Village, his paretns had wanted to give him a chance to break tradition. Though they'd gone back to the Stone Kingdom when he was five, his brother had continued to baby him to no extent.
He'd had a crush on Lilac since he could remember and this was obvious to the entire village besides her. He had no doubt that one day he'd be man enough to ask her on a date. They'd fall in love (though he was sure had already had), get married, and maybe even have a few kids. All he had to do was build up the courage to take that first step. In the end though, he couldn't even do that.
Jeremy had always been pathetic.
The worst part was, he let this define him. From before he could remember he was always Cal's shado

Cal blinked a few times before slowly nodding. The man in front of him burst into a huge grin. "I knew it had to be you!" He went to try and give the younger man a hug but was shoved back. The guards came to attention. "He's fine, boys. You're dismissed." With a salute the men marched off. The moment they shut the door the sunny disposition fell from the older's face. He looked Cal up and down momentarily before taking the crown off his head and running his hand through his hair. "You sure grew up fast " he sighed. Cal stayed silent. There was a moment of nothingness before the older man laughed nervously and gestured to Cal's arm. "I always told her you'd grow into my genes!" His smile seemed to broaden as he remembered fondly how often he'd reassured Michelle it'd happen. " How is your mom ?" his voiced dropped a bit in volume. "Does does she miss me?"
"She died," Cal said flatly, his voice void of any emotion. "Fourteen years ago." Darren seemed as though he'd be

He'd barely spoken two words since last week. His expression was blank, wavering only when waking from the same reoccurring nightmare. This was a rare event though, considering he'd hardly been sleeping. Dark bags were under his eyes, adding to his zombie-like disposition. Since his run in with Jeremy his food had consisted of a few small sip of coffee and a handful of sugar cookies, and even that was only a meek attempt at giving Joanna some peace of mind.
Any movement he made was robotic. Each bend of the elbow or twist of the neck appeared to be a great deal of work. His norm had become sitting slumped in a chair, staring at the floor and barely blinking. He would disappear at some points though, gone for hours at a time without any notice. Upon his return he would wander about the castle. He'd always try to at least cross the girl's line of vision when he'd return, if only to say, "I came back."
The worst part about him recently though were his eyes. They were empty, almost clouded

Cal had been her sole caretaker since she was four. She'd never met their father and only had vague memories of their mother. The way they cared for each other was more like a parent and a child than a brother and sister despite their only three year age gap. When it really got down to it, every decision that Cal made revolved around his sister and how it would effect her. Things as simple as what they would have for dinner all the way to something as important as who he could let himself love. He didn't see this as a burden though, simply something he had to do for her. As long as Lilac was happy, so was he.
They got along very well. The closest they ever got to "fighting" was when Cal would need to go to the Shopping Kingdom. The village didn't have everything they needed and so, every couple of months, he would take the three day trip to pick up a few things. Lilac never liked it when he went, the forest that lay between the village and the kingdom being a subject of fear for her. T

Every word was like a blow to the stomach, each memory a dagger in his chest. He was backed into the corner of the place he used to call his home, the boy he used to call his best friend the one causing him to retreat there.
"I had to tell them you were dead!"
Calvin's eyes were glued on the floor, his hands on his head.
"That there wasn't enough left of you to bring back!"
He shook, his teeth were clenched.
"And the entire time I was the only one who knew you were still out there!"
He shook his head back and forth slowly, as though denying it would make it untrue.
"It would have been easier if you'd died!"
Get me out of here. He wanted to melt through the wall. Get me out, get me away, I never should have come here.
Then it was quiet.
The pressure of the walls around him were gone. He was suspended in stars, and after a moment a familiar voice echoed around him. "I knew you wanted to get picked up! I just took a class on that! My project is almost over which means I'll g

and Cal was almost home.
He had gotten caught up in the Shopping Kingdom. Lilac's birthday was coming up and he'd wanted to find the perfect present for her. He figured it would be fine that he'd be a day late; yes he'd promised his sister three days and yes she had been very worried, but this wasn't his first time making this trip. The worst that had ever happened was that she came after him once when he was twelve. He'd caught her just on the outskirts of the forest and walked home with her.
Cal knew these woods like the back of his hand and, consequently, knew that they were dangerous. He kept a small knife easily accessible in his back pocket just in case and had long ago learned how to climb a tree in ten seconds flat. Lost in his thoughts, he stumbled over a tree root. He caught himself quickly but froze when he heard a low growl.
He looked around nervously to find three wolves appearing from the brush. Cal reached into his pocket and grabbed his knife. Holding it out

It wasn't unusual for Tex to toss Cal in a place where the inhabitants dislike humans. In some cases his arm could get him off the hook and, considering the gray scale granite that surrounded him he thought this would be a similar case. However the grey, stoney people seemed to actually be glaring at him. And in some cases they seemed to be studying him as though they weren't quite seeing something right. Though he was unsurprised by the odd looks he was not prepared for when two men came up behind him and grabbed him by the arms.
"Come with us," they ordered. Cal didn't seem to get much choice in the matter.
"What thehey, what's the deal?! Lemme go!" He struggled in their grasp though their stone arms didn't budge as they dragged him away. "Where're you takin' me?!"
"You have been summoned," the man to his left said flatly.
"Whatwhy?! I've only been here an hour, what could I've done?!" He continued to struggle in their unbreakable grasp.

The two birthdays he celebrated alone were nothing special. He only had a vague idea in his head what the day was anyway. June 30th by Atelpo's calendar was nothing more than a bothersome tug at the back of his mind.
This year though, he did not want his birthday to come. All week he had been thinking about the bustling of his old village, how people must be scrambling to get the small area to look its best. And now, lying in his tent half awake, he began to think about those who used to celebrate today with him even with all of the hectic goings-ons. He wondered if Jeremy would ever leave the village to visit the Shopping Kingdom to get himself new clothes or if tomorrow he would button up the

As much as he hated to admit it, the council's meeting room was impressive. Several lanterns burned burned brightly around the walls of the room, but most of the light came from a whole in the ceiling, covered by glass. A large pool of water is suspended by the glass, and a blue mermaid glances at him contemptuously before swimming out of sight. The water is so pure that the sunlight shines through with utter clarity. It casts shadows across the room as the mermaid disturbs the calm water. A thick, oak table, seated for five on each side and one at each end, sat in the middle of the room, demanding first attention. His eyes then strayed to the farthermost chair at the end, which out of all twelve chairs was the most ornate. It's hourglass shape allowed it's occupant to sit comfortably, without his wings being pressed against his back. As of then, Jesse sat as if he had a pin in his back, and he wore his disgustingly eerie crown. Even though he would never admit it, the thi

"I'll only be gone for three days," Cal laughed. He took the papers anyway and tucked them safely away in his pocket.
"That doesn't mean you won't get lonely out there on your own!" She let out a little sigh and crossed her arms. "I still don't see why I can't come with you."
Cal sighed and hooked his arm around her neck. "How many times do I gotta tell ya? I gotta go through the forest and that ain't safe for a girl."
The small teen wiggled out of her brother's grasp. "I'm fifteen Calvin, I can walk through the woods! Besides, what if I get lonely here without you?" She put on her best puppy-dog face hoping that maybe today would be the day she finally won this ongoing argument.
