Digital Illustration TutorialI made this tutorial back in 2010 as a pitch for a project that never took off. I finally decided I should just bundle it up as a PDF and upload it for anyone who wants to see it. It's old and the image quality isn't super great, but it covers my process from idea creation, composition, adding color, all the way to the final draft, and there might be something useful in there for some of you.Digital Illustration Tutorial2 years ago in Personal More Like This

Being shown something in plain view, our brains just process it as "something".
But when we are looking at something that is either censored, out of view, or concealed, our brains are boggled with the possibilities of what is being hidden - the imagination takes over and it can be "anything"!
That is why naughty images which are censored seem naughtier.
The off-screen monster which we can't see seems scarier.
The Christmas present which is wrapped seems more special.
With that being said...
Does that means if an image is offensive to someone, even though nothing is being shown, they are thinking more dirtier thoughts than others?
I have to admit that an image of lightly concealed female nude - using clothing or body positioning - can seem a little more erotic to me than a flat out photo of a naked woman.
So... does that mean this image of a redhea

Over the years I have produced a range of tutorials on artistic use of the computer. Most of them concerns rather general concepts and can hopefully give something regardless of which program you are using or even be of some interest for traditional, non-digital artists. Some examples of my art can be found in the gallery.
That said, to get the most out of these you should know that I mainly use the open-source image manipulation program GIMP. I also work a lot with the painter program MyPaint. These are both very powerful programs capable of great artistic expression. Being open-source programs, they are both legally free to download and use without any cost. They exist for many platforms, including Linux, Mac and Windows, so they are worth trying out if you haven't already.
The tutorials listed below tend are (ver

Please be careful WHAT you SELL for POINTS!Dear members,Please be careful WHAT you SELL for POINTS!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
as we all know this delicious new function has been enabled by DeviantART recently which allows you to sell content for points and keep the amazing amount of 80% of your share.
Overall this is a nice new function and we can't wait to see what you will do with it. We just want to warn you to be careful about one certain thing:
You should not sell high res files of your work for a small amount of points.
The few dimes people will spare by not having to pay shipping costs can do you badly.
There are a lot of companies, that take your dear work and print it on T- Shirts, books, posters and what not.
And in the past those companies at least had to put the efford into taking your art and retouching it. But shall you think about selling high res files for a small amount of points, greedy companies as that will have it even easier to take your art, distribute it big, and give you nothing of your share!

Right brain warriors in the new age will be the coveted candidates ordained to lead and guide us; lifting the torch to light the way forward into a brave new beautiful world.
Artists have always feared that they are unappreciated and that the march of progress comes only from business, science and their machines. 1984 was imagined by an artist projecting these exact fears. Our guest essayist suggests the computer will never be our master, but only the super high speed counting machine it was meant to be leaving humans with only one pure task— being creative.

"A while" was obviously "a few years". I barely recognised the strip!
Anyway; I'm not writing this to bitch about hating change (I'll save that and put it into Sequential Art), I'm writing this to relay a very good point the good Mr Kurtz made in the PVP blog:
"Everyone is kind of freaking out right now because of the Gary Friedrich case. Long story short, the guy who created Ghost Rider in 1972 sued Marvel, claiming that they never filed a copyright for his work and therefore he still owns Ghost Rider. Courts said "sit down before you fall down" and in addition slapped the guy with a $17,000 fine for selling tee shirts and posters featuring Mike Ploog Ghost Rider art at conventions.
People are considering this a warning salvo at artists who do sketches of Marvel and DC owned characters at

Kim Jong-il is Kim Jong-deadHere are some of the things that The Supreme Leader, the Dear Leader, the General, Lodestar of the 21st Century and Eternal President, Kim Jong-il has been (no joke) credited with:Kim Jong-il is Kim Jong-dead2 years ago in Personal More Like This
* Even before his birth, the future leader of North Korea was triggering miracles. Official biographers say his birth in a cabin on the slopes of Baekdu Mountain in February 1942 was foretold by a swallow and heralded by a double rainbow. When he was born, a new star appeared in the night sky.
* The first time he picked up a golf club, in 1994, Kim reportedly shot a 38-under par round on North Korea's only golf course, including 11 holes-in-one. He then decided to retire from the sport for ever.
* Kim has the ability to alter the weather simply through the power of thought.
* The fledgling leader was a genius as an infant, with official North Korean biographies stating that he had learned to walk at just 3 weeks and was talking at 8 weeks.
* As a junior high school pupil in Pyongyang, he corrected and chasti
Selkie: The Story. (no spoilers)Well I keep finding myself explaining various plot points or origins every time I post a new selkie picture and corresponding vague blurb, so I thought it would be a good idea to have a central place where you can read up on the story, if you like. The idea is that I'll update the story here when I upload a new illustration, and fill in major plot points which aren't getting covered in the picture, so check back if you're interested.Selkie: The Story. BEFORE I START, I will answer once and for all this question: "Is this from Ondine/Secret of Roan Inish?" Not really, this story is as similar to either of those as they are to each other: they are all from the same mythology, but this series is about characters who do not exist in another selkie retelling. Here is some reading on basic selkie mythology: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selkie

I can draw anything... as long as I get to look at it.
There is a great myth that drawing is a memory exercise. That if you can draw entirely from memory it makes you a better artist who deserves more kudos.
Of course the study of drawing will lead to a good memory of the things you've already studied how to draw, humans, animals, whatever it is that you love to draw. But the downfall of this is that you can restrict yourself to only drawing what it is you have studied how to draw, ie what you've memorised.
Using reference is not a weakness! It is a strength and almost all top level artists use a lot of reference. Using reference means you're not trapped one person's life experiences and can draw upon a wealth of extra knowledge. How can that be a weakness?
A lot of people seem to assume that the reference should come first. They go out and they scour the dA stock etc to find th

Inspired ArtI once thought that you should "paint what you know". Each artist has a unique background from which we can draw from. This is a sure way to create art with authentic detail and intimacy. In theory this is great and sometimes true, but more often than not it leads to boring and uninspired work. To simply paint what you know, is far too limiting!Inspired Art2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Now I am of the opinion that you should create the art that you would like to see. The real thrill is in exploring these new horizons, and blazing your own trail. For me, this is vital to the enjoyment of being an artist. Allow your art to surprise you, and let inspiration be your guide.
Animal of the DayHey guys,Animal of the Day2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I recently started doing Animal of the Day on my blog again, where I draw daily animals and try to have some fun with their expressions and shapes. Last year I failed to keep it up for very long, but this time I'm gonna do better and eventually make enough for an art exhibition.
So check it out if you like. I'm sure some encouragement will help my self-discipline here!
understand a painting study dont just copyThis is purely an observation from my point of view but whenever i see a study or painting based on a masterpiece or a screen plate. The results are almost in every case very good.So this tells me that our ability to copy is quite good and its not really required to be a high level artist.Junior level to mid level ones can pull this off easily too. Everything you need to know is already in the image we are trying to copy so it becomes a recipe for us.understand a painting study dont just copy10 months ago in Personal More Like This
the important thing though is to not "copy" it but to understand it and deconstruct a work method from it.And if you understand that then the work based from your own mind will be alot better.
When i see this kind of work , for me its not the level of detail and accurcy that one puts in the copied artwork that impresses me, but the images based on that learned knowledge afterwards. And to tell you the truth not many people understand this knowledge or are aware of how important it is to understand it.But the interesting phenomenon is that
