Stars TutorialYup yup, new tutorial from me. Link to it on my website:Stars Tutorial4 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'll eventually make DA-compatible version of it, but that will have to wait. I can't exactly use the same kind of layout format as with my previous tutorials, as this one has waaaay too varying kinds of images to fit into a mold like that and still look good. And holy moly, that's a lot of text! Took me several hours to write! But at least I've explained things by depth, hrrmh. o_o
Indeed, I drew that image over a month ago, and I've had the all the necessary pieces of the tutorial lying around, ready to be tutorialized, ever since. But with everything else going on it had to wait. But now the tutorial is done and I'm going to have some icecream! And then it's time to draw yet another comic page...
Which leads me to this: Eeee! I can't believe the cover page for the prologue chapter got a DD! I'm so happy! I've been smiling so bad that my whole face hurts. When I lo

“The very meaninglessness of life forces man to create his own meaning. Children, of course, begin life with an untarnished sense of wonder, a capacity to experience total joy at something as simple as the greenness of a leaf; but as they grow older, the awareness of death and decay begins to impinge on their consciousness and subtly erode their joie de vivre, their idealism—and their assumption of immortality. As a child matures, he sees death and pain everywhere about him, and begins to lose faith in the ultimate goodness of man. But, if he’s reasonably strong—and lucky—he can emerge from this twilight of the soul into a rebirth of life’s elan. Both because of and in spite of h

Please be careful WHAT you SELL for POINTS!Dear members,Please be careful WHAT you SELL for POINTS!4 years ago in Personal More Like This
as we all know this delicious new function has been enabled by DeviantART recently which allows you to sell content for points and keep the amazing amount of 80% of your share.
Overall this is a nice new function and we can't wait to see what you will do with it. We just want to warn you to be careful about one certain thing:
You should not sell high res files of your work for a small amount of points.
The few dimes people will spare by not having to pay shipping costs can do you badly.
There are a lot of companies, that take your dear work and print it on T- Shirts, books, posters and what not.
And in the past those companies at least had to put the efford into taking your art and retouching it. But shall you think about selling high res files for a small amount of points, greedy companies as that will have it even easier to take your art, distribute it big, and give you nothing of your share!
Companies from different countries, (especially countries
Tip of the Day: Mental BlindersSometimes you really have to just shut your brain off after making a good decision and just do it. Too many times we find that we know what to do but just don't do it. Today, come to a decision that is something you KNOW is a good one, then put on the mental blinders and just FOCUS on that task.Tip of the Day: Mental Blinders4 years ago in Personal More Like This
I think part of what success I've achieved so far has come from being able to focus on one thing for long periods of time like Forrest Gump.

My photography course at HogwartsUuuugh you guys, my sleep has been so terrible. I woke up out of a pretty entertaining dream, though. My photography course at Hogwarts3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I was taking a photography class at Hogwarts and Snape was our teacher. I think Ron and Harry might also have been in our class but I never did see them. Our assignment at the time was to get ten outstanding photographs of animals in their natural habitat and he told us we had to roll up our pant-legs and go wading in a swamp full of alligators and poisonous snakes if we hoped to get any good ones. He meant this literally. This was our assignment. (Oh, Snape! )
So I actually did it; I took off my shoes and wandered into the bog, dodging snakes and snapping away. I took so long about it that I missed the start of critique and I sort of ran into Snape with some of my classmates on a bridge while I was headed back to the castle. He was reviewing their photos (and grading ruthlessly, as he does). He saw me and said, "What are you doing? You knew we had critique."
I answered, "Yeah, I kn
Download my brushset and learn brush groupingHey everyone, I just put up a new video showing a simple, yet super handy way to categorize and group your brushes in Photoshop. It's especially useful if you have a really big set like me, it makes it really easy to find what you need so you don't have to hunt around constantly. I've also provided a download link to my current set of brushes with the video.Download my brushset and learn brush grouping2 years ago in Personal More Like This

5 Ways to Avoid Being DiminishedThere's a discussion brewing in comics about artists being more diminished as of late--that readers, reviewers, and publishers are focusing too much on writers rather than the artists who draw the book. I agree it's happening, but I'm not sure it's worth sounding an alarm over. I never felt diminished, but maybe I'm part of the exception. Maybe it's because I'm an artist and a writer.5 Ways to Avoid Being Diminished2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Either way, I do have a few thoughts on what artists can do to pull themselves out from under the rug.
1. DON'T DRAW LIKE A COG.
If you conform to a "house style", then you're at higher risk of being treated like an interchangeable cog in the comics machine. Yes, you're more likely to get consistent work, but you won't stand out as much. Therefor you'll be sought after less by big name writers, you're less likely to make a lasting impression on reviewers and readers, and you'll have a harder time getting raises (12 others draw like you and for less money).
I also suggests inking yourself if it helps. Penc
Premium Content and how I feel about making moneyHalloPremium Content and how I feel about making money4 years ago in Personal More Like This
There's a new feature called premium content that allows users to make file downloads available for a charge. This seems to be something with a vast range of different possibilities that range from quite nice to to quite lame. Of course we are all always against commercialization and sell-outs and everything and don't want things to change but there are some interesting options here.
Obviously everyone is going to know whether or not this is something he or she could use and how much sense it's going to make for what you do specifically but there's two points I want to adress.
I always thought it was lame when people sell stuff like brushes or psd files. This is probably just my personal opinion and many will certainly disagree for valid reasons, but I think, if you make some brushes, and you ask money for something as tiny as that, you are lame. Sorry. Actually, the point here is not that it will kill someone to pay like one buck for something tiny, it's just that it change

Have you ever wondered....why more traditional artworks get less response then the usuall photobashed stuff does? medium level artists can pull of collages pretty easily but they cant pull of more painting heavy pieces...Have you ever wondered....3 years ago in Personal More Like This
its just sad to see that artists out there who put lots of effort into the paintings never get the credit as the guy who bashes 3 photos together and puts lens flares on top

Atropa Belladonna Contest! Submissions Closed!Hey there The-Average-Alex here.Atropa Belladonna Contest! Submissions Closed!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
So after the recent closure of the logo contest we, after looking at the poll we posted, decided that we needed to host a new contest.
So here is the Atropa Belladonna contest!
Atropa Belladona is the binomial name for deadly nightshade.
The theme for this contest is Flora (plants). Flowers, trees, fungi, grass... They all make up so much of this planet we live on, each type of plant has its own ways of growing, its own unique defence mechanisms and its own symbiotic relationship. Some are giant, some are small, some are edible whilst others are completely poisonous, we rely on them every day of our lives.
We want you to create apieceof artwork which incorporates plants in any way shape of form. They should be the main focus or feature, or play a large part in the piece.
Secrets On How ToAlright I guess I'm gonna make another rant, and this one's been bugging me for the longest time. And I'm going to be as BLUNT as I will be and not sugar coat anything I'm about to say.Secrets On How To3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Often do I hear things like:
"what custom brushes do you use"
"how do you achieve this blur/ focus effect"
"how did you get the colors to go this way and that"
"what technique or computer program did you use"
What I rarely get asked for is:
"What did you study to be more efficient at drawing."
"What is an efficient way to study how to render certain types of materials"
"How do you practice proper lighting when painting?"
Guys I'm just gonna say it now, there's no shortcut to art. I work primarily in digital mediums now but I do have a solid foundation in traditional mediums. I didn't simply go out and buy a $400 tablet and instantly got to where I am today. I use custom brushes and special effects in my pieces, but they only take up less than 3% of the overall work. There's sti
Our First LoveWe all loved it at first. Our First Love3 years ago in Personal More Like This
We loved creating. Those first attempts were driven by enjoyment. We weren't doing it to get better, to "practice", or even, God forbid, for a paycheck. We were doing it to do it. A joy unto itself.
In some ways, I find all my current work to be little more than efforts to rediscover that first love. To get back to that feeling I had at the beginning, before all the training, practice, and work. Before I was "serious." Back when drawing wasn't about creating something pretty but just having fun. No pressure, no demands, no expectations.

How tentaculas are madePeople keep asking about Love and Tentacles, but I'm sorry to say that comic is as good as dead. I might draw a picture once in a while because Frida can be fun to draw, but I don't even think about LaT most of the time, unlike my other comics which enter my head daily. How tentaculas are made3 years ago in Personal More Like This
But people are apparently dying to know if Tom and Frida ever had kids, and if it could even be done. So I'll give you and explanation on that.
Tentaculas have reproductive tentacles around their waist (the thin pink ones that gets thick when they get aroused). Males and females rub them against each other and release semen and eggs into water (in these modern times its usually a bathtub unless they're hippies). They are left to float around until the fertilized eggs hatch and the tiny young eats the un-fertilized eggs. Then they move on to swallowing each other, until only one is left. Sounds unpleasant, but that is why tentaculas in general are very healthy and handicaps are almost unheard of unless they get inj
