When it comes to revealing Shadow's past, the game Shadow the Hedgehog disappointed me quite a bit. The game itself was not as bad as most people claim imo, but all it did story-wise was making Shadow's past even more confusing - and worst of all, closing the whole thing in the end and killing off all the characters involved, without ever clearing things up.
What do we know about Maria? In fact, when it comes to the games, next to nothing. I have been searching the web for information (as well as watching all the japanese Sonic X eps), and here is a summary of what I found out about Shadow's background story:

Just look at that unlawfully looong, weird address in the address bar.
ALWAYS check the address bar so you can easily avoid been hacked by fake login pages
