Fisheye Placebo

:bulletblue:Original webcomic by Yuumei (Wenqing Yan)
:bulletblue:Genre: Cyberpunk, Cypherpunk, Fiction, Psychological
:bulletblue:Estimated Release Date: hopefully before March 2013

Living under an authoritarian regime is not fun. Extensive censorship meant no Facebook, no Youtube, and no porn.

Fortunately for Vance, being a hacker makes scaling the Great Firewall a walk in the park. With the free web at his fingertips, Vance should be happy but heís not. Maybe thereís something missing in his life that porn just cannot replace.

Maybe itís a girlfriend.

So itís not weird at all to hack into the university to assign himself a hot female roommate, right? Thatís just taking fate into your own hands, or something along those lines, right?

Too bad fate had other plans in mind and Vance is dragged into a crazy conspiracy to overthrow the government by his most-definitely-not-female roommate.

College is meant to be exciting, but not this exciting. Between failed dates, failed grades, and maybe not quite failed hacks, Vance will slowly come to question the morality of his actions and the true price of freedom.

Is this what democracy looks like?

Animated work progress is now on tumblr [link] :D

Btw, I noticed a lot of people on my fb and tumblr mistook a few of the posters so I'll just clarify them now. The one on the bottom left with Nyan cat and Like a Sir is the banner for hacker group LulzSec, not a random meme insert. The Nyoro~n behind Vance is the icon for Kayla, a lulzSec hacker. The hourglass logo on the top room corner is the Wikileaks logo, not my "Countdown" drawing. Basically, all the posters in this drawing is either related to hacktivists or protesters, if you think it looks like a random meme or something else, it's not in the context of this drawing. A lot of hackers like to use memes as their symbol so it can easily get confusing ^^;

Part 1 of Chapter 0 is done :D The chapter is actually very long so I had to split it into many parts. It has a much lighter atmosphere than the intro. The intro is a scene from after the revolution began, now we're going back in time to see how it all started. Stick along for the ride! :D

Oh look, :icondontdoitplz::icondontdoitplz::icondontdoitplz: (thanks to ~TheFinalProtagonist )

And that, kids, is why you should never trust strangers on the internet! ;p

Now what could Robin be possibly up to?

(P.S. the official FisheyePlacebo.com website is still under construction which why it's only a troll page right now)

The bait here is referring to the social engineering technique of baiting, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_e… and yes, Vance is eating Red Cow Crunch with Red Cow.

New Fisheye Placebo poster :D I don't even know why they are posing like they're part of some action thriller with explosions, when in actuality they just sit on their butt and code all day. XD

More drawings for my future graphic novel, Fisheye Placebo :D This is Frey playing the electric violin. It's plugged into his headphones and silent to the rest of the world. He does when he needs to plan out the next strategy to fight against a totalitarian regime.

You can see the violin design here

The background words say "WAR IS WAR" on repeat. This phrase is traditionally used as an excuse for extreme war time cruelty. It's essentially saying "war is meant to be cruel so that's what you get." Although Fisheye Placebo will be more about cyber warfare, I think the war time mentality can still apply and can cause extreme psychology damage to those involved.

Frey is silently playing the violin on the outside, but a war is ranging on the inside.

Hacking is serious business until Frey needs to stretch at the cost of Vance's face.

I drew this back in September but I'm not sure why I didn't post it here ^^;

Speaking of hackers, international hacktivist group Anonymous is very angry over the recent enhanced attempt to pass SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act). The decision was suppose to be delayed until 2012 but they recently decided to reconvene on it today the 21st when people are too busy with the holidays to protest.

According to Anonymous, on the surface the bill is disguised to protect filthy rich companies from people who downloads free music/etc. In actuality, it allows corporate control of the internet so that a Youtube video of a little girl dancing to a Lady Gaga song can become illegal and if Youtube doesn't take it off, then access to Youtube will be blocked. This will not only affect the US since the internet is practically international. Anonymous considers this bill a weaponized censorship because corporations can easily manipulate the situation to censor practically any website. This is very similar to China's excuse for censoring all of Youtube and Facebook on the bases that there might be porn, except with SOPA the excuse is there might be free music.

To sign the petition against it, please visit [link]

If you're not familiar with the story, please read the Fisheye Placebo: Intro first.

This strip is inspired by a personal experience I had as a child in China. Like in the story, I was in the car with my dad when a group of street children came begging for money. My dad immediately locked the doors and explained to me that these kids were known to stab and rob people when the passengers open the window to give them food or money. And like in the story, my dad also grew up in extreme poverty, having to eat rats for survival in his childhood, but instead of sympathizing with the street children, he believed that anyone can pull themselves up like the way he did so there was no need for charity.

There is no moral to take away from this situation. I can't say what would have been the right thing to do at that moment, but I did gain a better sense of the class struggle that existed and still exists. I want to show in this strip how ignorant and spoiled Vance and Alex were, and the kind of country that Frey and Robin wants to change.
