OBJECTIVE: SELL THIS DAMN BOOK, DANNY.
At first, Gabriel was nothing more than a character named ONE. He had no backstory, no face, nothing. I just wanted to create a character that was a badass, yet with a sense of humor.
I was inspired by such characters as Boba Fett, Wolverine, Deadpool and Clint Eastwood from The Man With No Name trilogy. I needed to create something that fit that build, however, I'll admit, it wasn't intended at first.
I uploaded him on December 8th, 2008, (which, you can find here: http://danluvisiart.deviantart.com/art/GABRIEL-107612010?q=gallery%3Adanluvisiart%2F7848546&qo=50) and he became one of the most popular characters of the series, if not, the most. Soon I started finding him on forums, websites, fashion blogs (what?), and more.
But what hit me so hard was that the majority of the comments rela

Is Reference Bad?I feel like I've addressed this before at some point, in some other journal, but I find myself either discussing this with people a lot, or coming across people who on their work proudly claim to have "used no reference."Is Reference Bad?3 years ago in Personal More Like This
The biggest problem, and misconception, regarding references is that people feel like it's cheating or that it somehow cheapens their work. While I can understand the sense of accomplishment coming from using no reference to finish a painting or drawing, people who consistently do it are only hurting themselves in the long run. So in short, no, reference isn't bad.
Artists have been using reference since the days of the old masters. They would reference life, whether it be landscapes, objects on a table, or models standing in a studio. They would even reference their own sketches or other people's work in order create convincing paintings.
For some reason, a lot of people today seem to think that in order to be a good artist, they have to be able to do things without

deviantART has given me the opportunity to perform two Community Volunteer positions here:
I am the Science Fiction and Space Art Community Volunteer.
I am also now the new 3 Dimensional Art Community Volunteer.
One of the duties of these positions is that I can feature artwork from these categories as Daily Deviations.
I browse through these categories daily in search of deviations to feature as Daily Deviations.
This feature is to help the artist and their work gain more exposure, and it's genre and/or medium gains more community awareness as well.
But I need your help.
Have you seen a work of art here on deviantART which you have found so impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large?
Do you know an artist of whom deserves much more exposure?
Would you like to put a smile on someones face and make their

OBJECTIVE: CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AND STORY BUILDING
I began working pretty heavily on LMS during the first quarter of 2009. I had now a handful of characters, a rough idea of the story, and a general scope of what I wanted the book to be. To get started, I felt every book should have a theme. Movies do, right?
Spider-Man: Great powers, great responsibility.
Batman: Be more than just a man, a symbol, and be remembered a legend.
Star Wars: The myth of a heroes destiny, and the truth that allows him to be set free.
Who was Gabriel? What type of character or archetype was he? What were his rises and

The Kalos cats sat on the beach, huddled in groups around a roaring fire, munching on berries and chatting quietly. It was around midnight, some were sleeping, most couldn't sleep. Anxiety plagued them, would they be able to stay? Or would they be kicked off this island? Haven sat with Esme and Locket in silence, chewing on berries. Suddenly, the bushes beside them rustled, and they all bristled.
"Who's there?" Emse barked, and Locket drew his claws.
"Just me," A familiar, but not exactly friendly, voice said as they emerged from the bushes.
"Oh, Ashes!" Haven chirped, and all three cats relaxed, but they were all tense with worry. "Have you made your decision?" Haven asked, eyes bright with hope.
"Yes, I have," Ashes replied, tone a lot colder then earlier in the square. "You are not welcome here. Leave by dawn."
"What?" Haven exclaimed, and Esme hissed. "We'll die if you send us out into the ocean again!" Locket yelled

4 Tips for When You Commission Others[a needed reminder]4 Tips for When You Commission Others2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I was just thinking of this for no real reason earlier and thought I'd share because I've come into contact with all four of these things with the many commissions I've drawn. x'D
And who knows, most of this is common sense but perhaps some of you have never thought of things this way before. ;D;
I just know that most people drawing commissions for you will definitely appreciate it or enjoy drawing your commission more if you do these things.
o1. Be CLEAR and DIRECT with what you want drawn.
-Make the artist feel like they are drawing a character instead of just some item. You don't have to type out their life story, but it's always nice to have a small bit of information about the character to reference to so that a bit of personality or inspiration for posing/expression can be represented.
-So, something like "These two characters. She is really shy and modest and he is really apathetic." is a lot more helpful than "I want these t

The stuff that artists go through. There are so many pro's and con as to being an artist, professional or as a hobby. The stuff that artists go through.1 year ago in Personal More Like This
It feels nice to be able to express yourself through something you make and when that something turns out to be looking good we get this sense of accomplishment.
Most of the time though there are bad feelings mixed with the good ones.
Not being understood. Those moments where your friends or family does not understand that you have to desire to be alone and work on your art. Those copious amounts of hours you spend working and they wonder why you wouldn't rather be outside relaxing in the sun or hang out with your friends.
The only people who will ever fully understand this are other artists or simply very understandable people. It's important they they will eventually understand so there wont be any hurt feelings. Try to explain ti as calmly and rational as you can, perhaps with using examples in terms they would understand.
NEW FEATURE FOR AUGUST AND SEPTEMBERNEW FEATURE FOR AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER2 years ago in Personal More Like This
This group focuses on encouraging artists.
The monthly feature is late due to my very ancient computer crashing and having to purchase a new one. The artworks appear even more impressive on my new 27" high resolution monitor
I have opened two new folders, one for matte painting and another for announcements.
Our membership is now over 3,000 and our galleries as I always write, contain even more amazing and inspirational art, which is well worth viewing.
The primary focus of this group continues to be digital painting and digital drawing, which should be submitted to the 'Featured 5' folder. This group also accepts and has folders for animation, designs and interfaces, deviantWEAR, pixel art and pixel animation, vector and vexel artworks, comic strips, pages and panels, matte painting, mature content, mixed media, mixed media - 3D, 3D art, commission information, tutorials and resources, announcements and also wallpaper submissions.

The Walking Dead comicsDo you feel cosy and comfortable sitting where you're sitting now?The Walking Dead comics3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Let's ruin it.
Despite being a story of people who usually make it, The Walking Dead comics aren't that positively oriented. What's positive about a world full of mindless brain-eating zombies with very few living healthy humans left? (Don't answer, I know that for some of you it's a paradise). Come and take a closer look at these comics from a diffrent way than usual.
The basics. The Walking Dead is a black and white monthly comic book series, written by Robert Kirkman and brought to its visual life by Tony Moore. These two guys are the creators of the serie, however, Tony Moore was replaced from issue #7 by Charlie Adlard (which didn't stop him from making the covers through issue #24). And, of course, there's also Cliff Rathburn, who's

TO THE ASPIRING ARTISTS...."The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who'll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you're sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive. You feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that's almost never the case." - Chuck CloseTO THE ASPIRING ARTISTS....2 years ago in Personal More Like This

my current comic workmy current comic work2 months ago in Personal More Like This
okay so i keep getting questions on my current stuff , how and where to get them, so if you are one of the people who asked, this is my answer
my comicwokrk currently consists of 3 basic branches of work
writing and art done by me
art done by me
and covers done by me
before we get to the books themselves i would like to offer bit of an insight for anyone interested in getting their own stuff out there.
i am not covering crowdfunding as i personally stay clear of it.
this is a bunch of experiences i had, and since i got through this and am now doing fine, i thought some might find them useful
now, as i work predominantly for independent companies, my work can be a bit hard to get.
reason for this is a simple one. comic book stores buy their supplies from diamond. the main distributor.
they buy stuff they know will sell. comics aren't a huge profit business so they have to choose the winners on their own.
it is a ha
