Pokemon Contest Details! *Ended!*Update # 18: Last entry has been submitted~Pokemon Contest Details! *Ended!*1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Winners will be announced on Monday~ >w< Hopefully I can decide during the weekend. This is definitely going to be hard to decide. @ W @
Thanks everyone who participated~
This contest's theme is: POKEMON!
Do not include humans of any sort. The subject are Pokemon, not trainers or other humans in the Pokemon universe.
(Note: No humans means no humans of any sort. Examples: Pokemon who are canonically humanoid like most fighting types are fine, but no humans dressing as pokemon or pokemon turned into humans or any other sort of hybrid. This also means that trainers can only be referenced in a story if your entry is a written story. DO NOT HAVE ANY HUMANS AS A CENTRAL ROLE. ONLY HAVE THEM MENTIONED IF YOU NEED TO.)

PC(Another Song For Marriland's Wedlocke)This another song for Devin's (Marriland's) Wedlocke in memory of Cauliflower, Tangerine, Kohlrabi, Spinach, and Banana. This song is my 4th for the series, and it is a parody of "Payphone" by Maroon 5 ft. Wiz Khalifa, because some of the kids who might read this might not be of age to be reading certain things I kept the song PG rated (No Cursing and so on) in this version. This song is told from Legs and Carrot's POV and is marked as such.PC(Another Song For Marriland's Wedlocke)2 years ago in Personal More Like This

Working with Archie, etcHey all,Working with Archie, etc6 years ago in Personal More Like This
I get lots of questions, or I should say I get the same question a lot, about how to get in with Archie comics and what its like to work with them. I can't answer this question every time I get it, so I've cut and pasted my answers from bumbleking.com and now anyone who can stand to read through all of the stuff below can find out as much as I can remember or am willing to try and relay about how I got into comics. Let me give you the short version here first:
1. If you want to do comics, then PRACTICE DRAWING EVERYTHING, DO NOT STICK WITH JUST PINUPS AND DO SEQUENTIAL PAGES!!!! I cannot overemphasize that.
2. Do your own self published comics and try to sell them at conventions and on the internet. YOU MUST have some kind of internet outlet to show your work. But that's why we're all here.
3. My position as a freelancer with Archie Comics is a rare case of steady work in the comics industry. DO NOT plan to make a fortune doing comics and DO NOT plan to even make a living doin
Horses Are For Courses! With all this talk of horse meat in the news lately, it's time we take a step back and really ask ourselves all the fuss is about.Horses Are For Courses!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
History of Horse Meat
Horses are often revered as working animals, and companions. They've greatly contributed to the advancing of civilizations, from the horse-drawn war chariots of the Romans, to the Pony Express of the Old West, horses have had a significant and lasting effect on all of the civilizations that have adopted them. These faithful, hardworking animals have had a place at our side since we first domesticated them. But horses were on the menu long before we were on their backs.
Horse meat was central to our ancestors' diet and played a sacred role in rituals and customs. For example, Celtic chieftains were buried with their steeds, the Vikings' favorite meat was horse meat, and Caligula even appointed his horse as a Senator of Rome. The switch from food source to working animal can be partially attributed to Pope Gregory III in the 8th c
Where I draw the line on soft mountingI have been asked numerous times by a multitude of people, "Will you soft mount this squirrel I got?" "will you soft mount this little 10 week old fox cub?" "will you soft mount my super rare bat-eared fox/serval/african civet/etc.?Where I draw the line on soft mounting2 months ago in Personal More Like This
Short answer? No. I Will not.
1. The small or baby animals.
I will not soft mount anything smaller than an adult skunk or opossum. Why? Because anything smaller will end up looking like nothing more than a stiff furry tube with legs shooting out, and I will not degrade my work to that.
As for the baby animals, especially fox pups, tiny coyote pups, baby skunks, baby raccoons, etc... I will only lifesize these or send them to be freeze-dried. These poor souls deserve better, especially after such an unfortunate early death. You also don't get these specimens very often, so it's best to preserve them in a way to make them last a long time.
2. Rare specimens
This one is a huge pet peeve for me. If you have, for example, a fox/coyote/opossum/raccoon/etc t

1. Write a freaking script! Don't get me wrong, I adore :iconKayFedewa: and The Blackblood Alliance. But Kay herself has admitted how much trouble she got herself into by starting the comic and not having a script. And when one of the top artists on DA admits to the pitfall, you had best sit up and take notice. It's called a graphic NOVEL, folks. And just because it has cute pictures doesn't mean you get to half-ass it. Considering how much work goes into making a graphic novel looks good, I am continually gobsmacked by the number of people who plunge into it without bothering with a contingency plan. You know exactly what the end result looks like. About ... oh, ten, twenty pages, maybe 30 if you're lucky. And then it ends, and you won't see updates for months and years. If ever. It's not often that I invoke prior planning prevents piss p
DA pointsAlright, I've seen this happening way too many times and I want to say something about it.DA points3 years ago in Personal More Like This
100 DA points is not not worth much.
You can buy 800 DA points for $10 USD.
800 divided by 10 is 80.
80 DA points = $1
100 DA points = $1.25
If you're offering commissions for 100 points, you're being paid $1.25. If you're offering 100 points for a prize on a contest, you're offering $1.25. I've even seen 50 points ($0.63) or 20 points ($0.25). I don't know how much it is in other currencies, but I can't imagine it's much.
I spend at least 3-5 hours on a painting. Minimum wage is $7.50 USD where I live. That is not even enough to live on if you're working full time, so I expect to make at least that much for every hour I spend on doing art for someone else. If 80 points is $1, and minimum wage is $7.50, then the minimum cost for a commission that only takes an hour is 600 points. When I open up my own commissions, I take sketches for $10 and paintings for $20+ Depending on how much time it takes,
Dear DeviantArt Taxidermy Community...I just wanted to write to you, as I feel I can't express how I feel in person. You know I'll always love you, and we've been best friends for five years now.Dear DeviantArt Taxidermy Community...2 years ago in Personal More Like This
The problem is... you've changed.
We've grown apart. Where I once respected, and even looked up to you, I know look at you with nothing but resignation and contempt.
Where you were once noble, honest, and respectful, you're now full of illegal activity, under-age disgusting little prats and hideous soft mounts. Every day, I see some dArama in my inbox about someone wailing that a pelt they sold got mutilated, or so-and-so copied their idea, or crying that they don't have enough money and mummy and daddy won't buy them that seven-hundred-dollar pelt.
I tried helping you, I really did. When there's a noobie breaking the laws, I've always politely and tolerantly privately told them the law, to help stop them getting into trouble. And what happens? With every single case, that person has told me they'll follow the law, then turned rou

There has recently been a new wave of people who think taxidermy is all about soft mounting, and otherwise have no goddamn idea about it. Yeah yeah, I know a bunch of you do soft mounting because you enjoy it, but before you hop on my ass hear me out. First, :iconHellBoundPromises: warned me a shitstorm was imminent. She told me a certain rather popular person had come to Deviantart wanting to try taxidermy. This person brought with them a bunch of fans who waited eagerly for his/her work. But now instead of having people who are eager to learn from the vets on here, and other proper sources like taxi.net, these people have turned what we love into a fucking joke and made dA even less serious than it was before.

As some of the taxidermy/pelt collectors know, there’s been a recent influx in people becoming interested in collecting wildlife parts. It’s great to see people becoming interested in taxidermy and such as it’s not an art that is well known. But lately some of the taxidermy community on here has notice way too many people are selling items here and off site that are illegal in general or illegal in their state. Collecting animal parts is not like collecting baseball cards or coins, there are LAWS to them. A lot of members on deviantART don’t seem to get how serious it is if you are caught illegally selling animal parts. We’re talking about $1,000+ fines and even jail time. The federal officers don’t care if you didn’t know the laws or if you’re a kid, your still breaking the law and they will punish you. I always tell new people

Here's another article, this time on mentoring written by Steve Lieber .
I'm proud to say that Steve actually became a mentor of mine, (one of many) when I found my way to Periscope Studio. If it weren't for him I wouldn't be a professional today. Most of the professional etiquette I know comes directly from his years of experience and hard work in the industry. And before that, he learned from his own mentors! I think its super cool to finally become a part of this chain, and I hope someday I'll have the chance to help forge the next link. When I was alone and miserable trying to find my way into this industry, into ANY creative industry, I vowed if I ever made it I would turn aro

Anti-Fur and Pro-Fur Arguments: Be Persuasive!Today a Facebook friend shared a photo from an anti-fur group, that unsurprisingly was spreading blatant lies (because guys, totally serious, the US has absolutely no regulations on animals on fur farms...yup...they're totally exempt from every law and regulation out there....</sarcasm> -_-; ). I went through the comments and threw in my because...well...I can, haha. So after viewing the comments there, I was inspired to write about how both pro and anti fur people should handle a situation when they truly strive to change people's opinions on fur and make a difference.Anti-Fur and Pro-Fur Arguments: Be Persuasive!10 months ago in Personal More Like This
BOTH PRO- AND ANTI- FUR:
*Don't be a jerk! If you come into a discussion with insults flying, people simply aren't going to listen to you. If they are listening to you, odds are it's because they're already on your side. That's doing nothing to get your target audience. I know I personally was turned away from the anti-fur group because I saw how rude they were being to people. Honey attracts more flies
Asking advice. On one of my recent posts, I had a beginner interested in taxidermy ask me some very basic questions regarding howto mount a wolf for a headdress. The pelt they showed me they intended to use is this one: http://www.hideandfur.com/inventory/74801025.htmlAsking advice.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
It doesn't have lips for tucking, the eye-holes look enlarged, and it is not taxidermy-quality, not even for a headdress.
They openly admitted that they'd never done taxidermy before. They don't know how to re-hydrate a pelt, or even measure one in order to buy a proper form. When I told them that they needed to do more research, invest in a proper hide, and seek professional instruction, they said, I've done stuff like this before, called me mean, got upset, and blocked my account.
This in itself doesn't actually bother me. But what does is the fact that this is NOT the first time something like this has happened. Beginners seeking advice seem to get butt-hurt when those with more experience explain that they are by no means ready to

They are VERY adamant that they want the hides and will pay extra to get them shipped to Europe. I was still reluctant to work with them, but gave them a quote for a full taxidermy-style black wolf headdress with custom eyes nevertheless.
The response was "Your head really isnt normal, girl. Ofcourse NO. Things

Taxidermy is not ArtFor those of you who are dead set on believing that Taxidermy is not art, let me make this easy for you to understand.Taxidermy is not Art2 years ago in Personal More Like This
By definition, taxidermy IS an art form.
the art of preparing, stuffing, and mounting the skins of animals with lifelike effect.
early 19th century: from Greek taxis ‘arrangement’ + derma ‘skin.’
A taxidermist must be skilled in sculpting, sewing, woodworking, designing, and must be knowledgeable in animal anatomy and behavior. The 'dead animal' part is just the dirty work before the real art can begin. Every piece of art starts out ugly before it can become a masterpiece.
The listed skills are considered some sort of art form, right? Well by saying taxidermy isn't art, you're saying those skills are not considered art. Therefore by YOUR definition, 'art' does not exist in any medium, and this site should not even exist.
