Anime and manga: a booming industry in many parts of the the world. The beautiful and unique style of art and its exquisite stories enticed many readers and captured many young artist's hearts. This is how I started drawing; my love for manga and anime led me to a love of drawing. But like any abilities, good skills do not come overnight; and they don't come no matter how long you sit and wait for them.
I've hit a roadblock in my advancement so I decided to ask my favorite manga artists their own personal experience. It turned out, many of them had difficulties that I'm currently countering. Their advices are most helpful, and I hope you find them helpful too.
To those who never picked up a pencil to draw outside of manatory art classes in school: Read and see the process and other aspects of becoming a good artist. Maybe they can spark a drawing interest in you.
To those who are casual doodlers: These tips may turn you from casual to hard-c
Creating a Comic: Where on Earth do I Start? You like stories. You wanna tell them.Creating a Comic: Where on Earth do I Start?2 years ago in Manga & Anime More Like This
But it's more than that, isn't it?
You want to build them.
You want others to experience them.
We tell stories everyday in conversation, but how do we transform those into sequential art?
"Where on Earth Do I Start?"
Words, Words, and More Words!
In many ways, comics, that is, sequential art, resembles the art of film making. Every comic has it's own art design and "directing" style, right down to how the characters think and act. The art of comics has been closely linked to realms such as storyboarding and graphic design. Though the common lingo includes the term "novel" (as in graphic novel), the typical novelistic fashion of writing must be adapted for comics much in the same way it is reshaped for a screenplay. Comics don't only involve the thoughts and feelings of your character(s), but they also include specific actions to showcase these emotio
Artist Alley for BeginnersHave you had a table at Artist Alley before? If you haven't I'm going to give you a list of suggestions for manning your table for the first time. These suggestions are not in any particular order.Artist Alley for Beginners3 years ago in Manga & Anime More Like This
1. Do not go overboard.
You may think your artwork and crafts are really great, but it always pays to be just a little bit cautious when having your first artist alley table. The reason for this is simple, you have to test your work in the consumer market. If you become really excited and buy 100 prints for your first convention and only 5 get sold... well you are out a lot of money. If you have many prints have small quantities printed, such as 5 - 10 prints and keep track of what prints sell this will be a good indicator for what prints are most popular.
2. Be reasonable on your prices.
If you are new to the art world you may think you can make a killing selling anime/manga prints. It can be tempting to want to charge $5, $10, $15 even $20 for one of your
Advice For Anime Con Artist Alley TypesI was recently asked for some Artist Alley tips, and it made me realize two things: one, that I've been going to cons for 13 years and working Artist Alleys for 8 (good god), and two, that I had a huge guide typed up already. I'd been meaning to post this for a while - so I dug up that ancient draft, refined it, and put it over here: Massive Artist Alley Advice Post</b>Advice For Anime Con Artist Alley Types4 years ago in Personal More Like This

GENERAL TIPS
STUFF TO BRING:
- Large water bottle or thermos - Keep this with you and refill it often. You'll be talking ALL WEEKEND, so keep dehydration at bay. (Be sure someone can watch your table during pee breaks.)
- Cell phone - You won't be able to hear your phone ring over the noise of the alley, but text messaging is a godsend at cons. Make sure your phone is set to Vibrate, and keep it close to you.
- Healthy snacks that keep - I recommend apples, alm

Artist Alley tips, tricks, and other stuff learnedThis past May I sold my art at Anime North Artist Alley, or as it is now renamed, Comic Market. It was literally like taking an entire business class practical exam squashed into three loooooooooooong days. Not counting the month of work I sweated and stressed over. But it was definitely worth it, and I recommend it to everyone. Less because it's a great opportunity to make money (DEFINITELY NOT, unless you have previous experience), but because of the amount of stuff you will LEARN.Artist Alley tips, tricks, and other stuff learned3 years ago in Personal More Like This
There are so many things I would do differently next time, all of which are pointed out on the list below. But the idea is that by doing it, I now know what exactly it is like, and things I hadn't thought of beforehand and now known to me. Not to say the entire thing was a disaster; rather, it really went 50/50. Below are tips, but also examples from my own experiences. This is written for the newbie, but anyone's welcome.
I'd like to stress that "everyone is different". I think the outcome of your experie

Panelling and Planning
-Drawing : Panels, shading, angles, techniques, and so forth:
1) Plan your comic out carefully first- just do a few scribbles on what is happening in your comic (are they talking? Any action?)
2) If you're not "good" at drawing people/animals/whatever, get a book on anatomy, watch anime/read manga to get a fair idea on what things should look like- PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.
3) Camera angles: watch tv/movies/read manga to see how the camera is featured: Is it close-up? Birds eye view? Front on?
-Drawing : Panels, shading, angels, techniques, and so forth

Artist Alley First-Timer? What You Need to Know!
A little advice after my time at the artist alley.
by *Scar23An original article by *Scar23
Artist Alley: My First Time! Many of us have been to some form of comic or anime convention and traveled through the artist alley. The first time I ever went to a convention was WonderCon in San Francisco, California, and the first place I stopped was at the artist alley. I remember being so surprised that there was actually a place completely devoted to artists. After browsing through the artist alley and meeting some of the artists, I thought to myself, “One day, you’ll be here, too.” About 5 years later, I was coerced into getting my first artist alley table at Sac-Con in Sacramento, California on March 6th, 2011.
Preparing to have an artist alley table was one of the most stressful t

Regarding personal style. To anyone who is obsessively busy trying to find a style unique to them; don't. It seems to have become some sort of trend nowadays on dA, trying to "find a style", when really it is something quite ridiculous to be doing.Regarding personal style.2 years ago in Digital Art More Like This
If you compare it to handwriting, it's like worrying about how to make every single letter of the alphabet both beautiful and unique to you when your spelling and grammar leave a lot to be desired, while they are really the most important things to learn first. Sure having a pretty style to look at is nice, just like having a beautiful handwriting. But if all of your other artistic knowledge is falling behind, much like your spelling and grammar, the result will still be unattractive and your art will not reach the viewer in the way that you intended.
So in short, focus on getting better, on gathering knowledge, experience, and practicing, not on finding your own style. Style will happen automatically. Not to mention the fact that if you're a good and experienced eno

1. Have a banner
Preferably with some of your artwork and/or logo featured on it. This will allow patrons to identify you and your artwork from afar.
2. Have an effective display
This can include a poster display, a rotating display, or mesh display. It doesnt matter - as long as you can display your merchandise up where people can see it from far away. It lets people see what you have for sale without being up close to your table. And considering most AA purchases are through impulse buying, youre guaranteed to get more customers.
3. Have a wide variety of merchandise for customers to buy
No two customers like to buy the same thing. If you have a large selection of items to choose from (such as keychains, bookmarks, prints, buttons, jewelry, etc), including a variety of different characters, you are likely to make more money.
4. Make items customers can use

The genius of Miyazaki - Art HistoryIf you haven't heard his name, you must have heard about at least one of his creations. So, who's Miyazaki? It's easier to say who he's not.The genius of Miyazaki - Art History9 months ago in Manga & Anime More Like This
Hayao Miyazaki was born on the 5th of January 1941 in Bunkyo, Tokyo, as a second of four sons. His father was a director in young Miyazaki's uncle's factory producing rudders for fighter planes - this is where Hayao became highly interested in aviation, which often appears in his films.
When Miyazaki was a little kid, his mother suffered from Pott's disease (sort of tuberculosis) and spent a few years in a hospital. Some says that a very similiar motif appearing in "Tonari no Totoro" ("My neighbour Totoro") was strongly inspired by that part of his life. Also, during his childhood, Miyazaki had to change his place of residence and switch schools several times, which influenced his films a lot, too.
