2011 BMFAC News UpdateBMFAC winners published in print magazine!2011 BMFAC News Update2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
The 25 winners of the Benoit Mandelbrot Fractal Art Contest were contacted in mid February to supply large format files of their winning images and also a short bio explaining their interest in fractal art, software used and general information about their work if they chose to do so. We were also informed that the first exhibit would be held in Logroño, in Northern Spain. Javier Barrallo, a Professor of Mathematics at The University of the Basque Country, Spain and also one of the panelists for the BMFAC was our contact for this. The current exhibit will be in the Casa de la Ciencia (House of Science), in Logroño, the Capital city of RIOJA until June 10th. I'll post a few pictures Javier sent further down. Javier also says he will send more pictures soon.
Also when I was contacted in February, Javier informed me that he had written an article about the BMFAC for a Spanish scientific magazine with all the winning images i
Mandelbulb 3D version 18.104.22.168 Beta available now!Hey folks!Mandelbulb 3D version 22.214.171.124 Beta available now!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Jesse has just released a new Beta version of M3D; v126.96.36.199 test.
As ever, it's available for free download from FractalForums.com at:
What's new in the 188.8.131.52 test version:
A rather spiffy looking new interface and, in Jesse's own words:
"Some beta testing is needed because of compiler upgrading;
the changes belong to the internal light model, more options
for the diffuse map, panorama camera mode, stereo options.
Some issues should be solved, many new ones to find!
It is just the executable, you can take all directories with files
from the previous version - v184.108.40.206 - if you need them, or adjust
the ini-dirs to the existing ones.
Note: the new stereo options must be used from the same starting
parameters to work properly, I will change this for easier handling.
For now you have to undo the parameters or reload default ones".
Please bear in mind that this is just the executable, so if you are
New M3D Formulas from ~dark-beam!Hey Everybody!New M3D Formulas from ~dark-beam!10 months ago in Personal More Like This
Just a quick heads-up to let you know that our Mandelbulb 3D formula wizard, 'dark-beam'; after a well-deserved sabbatical, has now returned to active service, and has written some fascinating new formulas for our much loved prog!
If you're new to Mandelbulb 3D, and haven't yet got the full - original - 'dark-beam' formula pack, you can download 'new fmlas.zip' from:
For the very latest formula releases, again on 'new fmlas.zip' - including the brilliant new RandCubesIFS - goto:
Note: before downloading you should perhaps rename it, say; 'new fmlas2.zip', in order to avoid overwriting the original .zip file. Got your ears on Luca?
For those of you looking for the very latest version of M3D (v1.8.9) which now features Volumetric Lighting as well as a host of other excellen
Mandelbulb 3D Tutorial 4: Basic TipsMandelbulb 3D Tutorial 4: Basic TipsMandelbulb 3D Tutorial 4: Basic Tips5 months ago in Personal More Like This
First thing we'll cover are some tweaking tips. Tweaking, not to be confused with Twerking. Almost everyone does it. It's one of the best ways to learn. This section of the tutorial will cover some of the basics that will hopefully help new MB3D users with tweaking. Just don't let words like iterations, raystep multiplier and stepthwidth limiter scare you off. You don't need to know the math behind these things. Just consider those words as lables to show you where a setting is and you'll do fine. That's what the GUI is for, to make using the program fairly simple. I'm going to use a sample parameter of mine from about 2 1\2 years ago which is a tweak in a long line of tweaks. You will find that I am guilty of a few things that I'm going to cover, so it's a good example.
As always, I like to mention that I am not a tech giant. I really don't know a lot of the technical aspects of Mandelbulb 3D. If you are interested in the technical

Mandelbulb 3D - Version 1.8.7beta-1 testJesse has released another updated beta version of Mandelbulb 3D: v1.8.7beta-1 testMandelbulb 3D - Version 1.8.7beta-1 test1 year ago in Personal More Like This
This is just the executable and readme; get it at: http://www.fractalforums.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=45
(You will need to have installed the full version 1.8.2 x1: http://www.fractalforums.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=43 prior to adding this update)
As always, in Jesse's own words:
"Ok, this is for those who like testing, only the executable with readme included, save your current program first when replacing it with this version....
Because of the extended hybrid combination option in the 1.8.7 version, it can cause some color shifts and different results in certain combination modes, nevertheless please report any unusual issues, thx!
Included is a simple html readme.
What is new in version 1.8.7:
- Fixed issues in the navigator and lighting.
- 'Smooth' option when calculating only one hard shadow.
- New but slow Monte Carlo
Chaotica 0.48 for WindowsDownload for Windows 32/64bit: http://chaoticafractals.com/chaotica_0.48_win_noncommercial.zipChaotica 0.48 for Windows2 years ago in Personal More Like This
This release is mainly a bugfix release for the 0.47 beta, with many improvements to the user interface fixing issues such as the fractal not scaling when you changed resolution, imaging settings being spuriously reset and not saved properly etc. Hopefully it's a bit more friendly to use now It'll still crash if you try to restore state without having the original params loaded, that'll be fixed in the next release.
Another important change in this build is restored native support for bipolar, thanks to code Xyrus-02 provided from Apo7X15C beta 3. I'm hoping the small difference in handling the divide by zero and negative log etc will finally enable full compatibility - please test this and report if something looks wrong!
* Changed copyright to Glare Technologies Ltd.
* Added Glare Tech's Winter scripting language (not exposed yet)
* Added batch rendering

already a superb piece of fractal software!

In Jesse's own words:
"Not sure if this release is too early, but someone might use it for the FractalForums
contest so here it is....and I need some rest!
Please look at the readme for some explanations for the new volumetric function.
What is new in version 1.8.9:
- Volumetric light option.
- Some issues fixed.

- Formula update, some sine approximation adds with more options."
I suspect that we'll be seeing a lot of amazing lighting effects over the next few weeks!

A new 'Toy' for M3D!!Hi guys!A new 'Toy' for M3D!!6 months ago in Personal More Like This
First off; let me wish you all a - slightly belated! - Happy New Year!
Now, to the point; I recently discovered - via Kronpano's :iconkronpano: excellent piece 'Sierp Hilbert Construction Site': http://fav.me/d72bcaa that it's possible to create interactive 360 degree images of M3D - and doubtless also Mandelbulber and Frag - pieces.
The process uses a facility provided by 'fieldofview.com', which is accessible through a Flickr account. I personally have never been a great one for making vids of my M3D creations, so finding this feature was like manna from heaven for me!
Basically, you'll have to have, or open a Flickr account: http://www.flickr.com/ to upload your images to. As most of you will be aware, M3D has a 360 degree view option within the Navigator; use this to create your panoramic 'base' piece.
To work best, the 'horizon' should be positioned in the exact centre of your image. This will avoid any unwanted distortion. If you are using a background image

In few words, Meet the Fractal Community is a bi-monthly interview with an artist of our beloved fractal community.
This week let's have a closer look to piethein21 !
Hey piethein21! how are you today ? Not too stressed about this interview ?
Hey I'm fine today. I'm not stressed at all. It takes a lot to stress me out. Sometimes it would be helpfull to be stressed out. Sometimes on exams I worry not enough and don't pay attention to the test enough. I'm jabbering already I hope it would not be too much for you to read all my nonsense.
First of all, please introduce yourself to the community.
Ok. I'm piethein21 I study in Delft and I'm living in Delft too (only 2 weeks now). I study applied mathematics and hoping to finish my master in 2,5 years from now. As a hobby I cycle (but only in the summer when its not too cold outsid

Was Mandelbulb 3D your first choice when you began your artistic journey?
To be honest, I never intended to begin any artistic journey! Like many fractalers I'm just a kind of lazy geek who likes to produce stunning graphics in a few mouse clicks.
To answer your question, I don't remember exactly the first programs I used t

Motion Blur Stills with ChaoticaA quick and very underused technique to create blur effects.Motion Blur Stills with Chaotica2 weeks ago in Personal More Like This
The principle is simple: you create a short animation and, instead of rendering it entirely, just render one frame, which will be your final artwork.
Step 1: you need some parameters to animate. I used a simple plastic with only 2 transforms.
Step 2: Open the animation editor (Ctrl+T or Window > Animation Editor). Set total length to some reasonably amount of time. I use 30-60sec currently, since its short enough to not get lost and long enough to have some room to tweak to control the blurring.
Exposure time controls the amount of motion blur. No worry much about getting the "right" value right now, since you can change it at any point.
Since we are only looking for one frame and not a full animation, there is no need to create many keyframes: 2 usually do the job. If, after making the animation, there are no frames that you like, you can just change one of th

Stylish Pixels: the Versatility of Fractal ArtFractals have wide application in the modern world, and can be used for purposes as simple as basic screensavers or as complicated as detailed environment generation in games and movies. While fractals can be used as tools, they also can be used to create beautiful, abstract, and awe-inspiring artwork in a virtually limitless number of ways. Stylish Pixels: the Versatility of Fractal Art
There are three "categories" that I consider encapsulate fractal art as a whole:
- Fractals as "objects" that can be "photographed."
- Fractals as "brushes" that paint and shape various sections of the fractal.
- Fractals as "paint."

Interesting Mandelbulb 3D Image NewsInteresting email ~Interesting Mandelbulb 3D Image News1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I received an interesting email this morning. Someone contacted me through my Fine Art America site requesting that I make a print available. I forgot to ask how she found the image, as I hadn't even posted it there yet. Anyway, it turns out this person is the daughter of Karl Menger, who's most famous popular contribution to mathematics (according to WikipediA), was the Menger sponge, a three-dimensional version of Sierpinski's carpet. The Menger3 formula (and other forms of it) certainly seem to be some of the most widely used and popular formulas for many that use Mandelbulb 3D.
The image she was interested in was one I recently posted here at DA, Wreck Of The Menger. Eve pointed me to a very interesting video that explains the Menger sponge quite well,
#127: The Great Mandelbulber - GrahamSymGood morning! It's the 14th of the month, that is to say time to introduce another master of MB3D!#127: The Great Mandelbulber - GrahamSym2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
We had a trip in Europe: we went to Italy, then in Scotland, to end in France. It's time to go back to the United Kingdom and pay a visit to GrahamSym, the master of sci-fi fractals!
Well, in my opinion! But I'm sure many of you will agree with me.
The Great Mandelbulber - GrahamSym
Hello GrahamSym! Tell us something about you.
I live in East London, married 3 grown up children. I worked as a Museum technician, until ill health forced me to retire. I play guitar and bass. In the 80's and 90's I played in bands but it took too much comittment once my children were born, although I still have the odd jam with friends. I have been creating computer art of one sort or another since the late 90's. I used Terragen, Truespace, Blender, Bryce, Photoshop and a few others.
When did you start making fractals? I

LOOK AGAIN! I MADE AN EXPLANATION TOO
Art inspiring feature:
Mandelbulb 3D, my process. Over the last few months I have gotten a lot of questions on the process I use to create my images. It has only been about the last year that I feel I am really understanding Mandelbulb and creating more with purpose and not chance. However chance and luck does still come into the creation process. I view what we do as Mandelbulb artists a bit like exploring. I am an artist who has been making art for well over 40 years. All my years of painting and photography does play a roll in how I use Mandelbulb.
