I somehow always end up cosplaying singing idols ^^; Looked through my gallery and saw that I hadn't uploaded Lenne yet. She is such a sweetie. I feel perdy when I'm in this costume. It helps that it is so awesomely comfortable and doesn't even require a wig!

No I don't have the mic, sorry. This whole costume was made in about 6 hours on a whim for a con where I was a Guest and they wanted me to wear a FF costume. I didn't feel like breaking out my more elaborate (read: uncomfortable) ones since I was in the middle of a 6 week in a row convention tour. Exhausted doesn't even begin to cover how I felt at that time. But planning and making new costumes tend to make me happy and I pulled an all nighter to make Lenne.

My last cosplay of 2011! Litchi has been on my to do list since the first arcade game was imported to the USA at Planet Zero in Houston a few years ago!!! I was lucky enough to be in the area and was one of the first people to try my hands at it. Litchi's design and fighting style with the staff was instantly my favorite. I also really approve of girls in glasses. AND I love pandas, and she has one hanging on her head. It was love at first button push lol.

This costume is entirely crafted by me as usual, with more photos coming soon.

New cosplay debut! Ayane from Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2

A full body shot of the new Ayane costume I busted out for Fanime. I do mean busted out... this was made in 3 days because of my hectic convention travel schedule this year. I tried to be as detail oriented and anal about the construction of this costume as all my usual costumes, and the only way this got done in time was because I had most of the materials at home already, and thought ahead to get the shoes, wig, and Fuma Kodachi swords in time.
Cosplay often goes beyond just the time needed to craft, but also material scouting, waiting for ordered items to come in, and figuring out how to attach things. I got really lucky with Ayane, in that only the skirt had to be remade (twice lol) and everything else came together and fit on the first run.

As you can see, I made the costume more modest than the design, omitting the cut out in the front of the bodice, and adding a sheer layer in the skirt. I think it still reflects the character and represents the detailed game design. Don't ever be afraid to modify a costume if you don't feel comfortable wearing it. We cosplay for many reasons, the main one being love for a character. Replicating costumes 100% of only one facade of cosplay, it often is more challenging, fun and creative to translate a design from a rendered source to a working fitted garment, and it's perfectly ok to take artistic license. I see a lot of cosplays being more sexualized than their designs, and I think it's totally cool to modesty-fy a costume as well.

I'm bringing Batgirl to C2E2! You can find me at my exhibit hall booth 216 right up front, please come by if you can!

Batgirl construction breakdown:
-Armor made from plastic (chest piece & shoulders) and urethane rubber (abdomen). Patterned and sculpted by me, molded with help from Brian Boling, finished and attached by me. (It was a bitch)
-Undersuit made from a shiny and a matte stretch pleather. Patterned and sewn by me. The quilted parts were really fun!
-Cape made from matching black and gold pleather, with lead cape weights. Swooshiest cape I have ever made lol
-Gauntlets made with Worbla & foam, covered in matching gold pleather. I really enjoyed drafting the template for these pieces! I know from how clumsy I am that I could not make the gauntlets out of resin or plastic, or even fiberglass. I would either hurt myself or destroy them at cons. So I opted for worbla/foam because it is lightweight and surprisingly durable.
-Gloves made from scratch from same gold pleather. I tried to be super accurate with the design and made individual quilted finger pads O_o
-Boots used to be Thigh High boots, I altered them severely. A note about the high heels - yes I know they are not accurate. BUT I am so short and the costume is so padded out with the armor and pleathers that I need some help on the height front to pull off that look.
-Belt made from gold powdered urethane rubber

This shoot has been planned since Dragoncon, we were just looking for the chance to push the giant egg into the woods lol.
We took advantage of a beautiful warm day in late October and set up the egg prop in between these awesome ivy vine overgrown trees in the North GA mountains. Realizing again how immobile I am in this costume *headdesk*, and how many bugs were flying around us O_o;, we did a fairly quick photoshoot in under an hour. I put on the horns at the last minute because I felt like my head was so bare. They were just stock from my store laying around.
I am very excited about the ivy on the trees as it matched the egg's decoration wonderfully. Got my skirt dirty tromping around in the dirt but it's well worth it.

Construction Notes on this costume:

I had already cosplayed the Wizard once [link] and really love the style and grace of this character. This newer design compelled to me for the intricacy of details, mermaid silhouette, and creme/black color scheme.
I decided early on to make some artistic changes to this design, because I did not like the open stomach and hip exposure. Such design aspect may look nice on paper or rendered on a digital figure, but on a real person the skin exposure would have contradicted the elegant sophisticated overall design of this outfit. I wanted to make this costume look regal and opulent, not show off my belly button and hip flesh.
Whenever I choose to make changes to a design, I try to be very respectful of the original designer and translate their vision to a real life version of the character. In the case of the Wizard, I chose extravagant fabrics and trims, and spared no cost on the materials. I used the most expensive fabric on my record on this costume: $100 per yard. Even the black satin serving as the skirt base was a heavy bridal satin. The creme fabric was exquisite and I couldn't have been happier with it.
I drafted my own patterns and created a steel boned corset, over which a lot of details were hand stitched on. I designed and made a center applique piece in place of the open belly and matching bra cups, all embroidered free-hand on my sewing machine. Just pinning on the trims and deciding placement of each took a good day, and I had to keep walking away from it, coming back, trying it on etc.
Over the corset went a bolero with those weird sleeves. I searched all over for a pleated chiffon and found a semi-sheer pleat at fabric.com finally for the sleeve petals. They were carefully measured (MATH!), cut out and fray checked, and sewn together into sleeves. I beaded glass crystals to each petal tip as well.
The skirt was a fun challenge because it's an exxagerated mermaid shape with multiple tiers. I made an underskirt with a tulle petticoat (hate sewing tulle...), and underneath that I built a hoopskirt from the ground to my knees. Again, a lot of math was used to figure out the right length, diameters etc. of this set up and I had to take into account the 7 inch heels I would have to wear in order to emulate the character design's torso to legs ratio. Anyway, a lot of time later, I had an underskirt and it was time to create the tiers on the overskirt. The bottom black tier is the satin, and I made a circle skirt and the biggest applique set I ever - the snakes. Each applique is heat-n-bonded on, then satin stitched over. The larger twin snakes have an overlay of metallic net as well. I ran out of time to embellish the snakes, was going to bead on them and add crystals as well.
The next tier is my awesome creme fabric, with the gorgeous scalloped edges. Over that went a black fishnet fabric that is heavily embroidered, beaded and sequined. I encased the edge in a binding to give it a finished look. My tiers are a little different from the original sketch, but I'd like to think I kept to the feel of the character while adding some interesting textures and details to the skirt, to match all the stuff that was going on with the corset/sleeves.
I used the same embroidered fishnet to create the under sleeves to again have some of the same reoccurring materials in the top as well as bottom of the costume.
Oh, and for the first time ever I made a bib lol. I mean, what else would you call that rounded collar thing? I was skeptical of the thing the entire time I was sewing it, but with the bolero on it looks nice and finished.

Now onto the rubber snakes on the skirt. They were a focal point in the design and I felt it needed to be accurate, in order for people to recognize this character. So I spent hours sculpting 2 mirroring snake designs out of clay, as well as a matching center piece for the top of the corset with the harlequin face on it. I then made a silicone mold and dusted it with opalescent powder, and cast the whole thing out of urethane rubber. It's an expensive process, over $150 just in materials for the mold and cast, and special urethane adhesive to attach them to my skirt. I think the finished pieces turned out great though, and give the skirt the needed dimensions.

The hat was the last piece I made. God knows why it covers her left eye. I made a pattern, then 3 bases in different sizes in Wonderflex, and covered them in matching fabrics. The hat inside is finished with a felt backing, and I hand stitched various trims on for detailing. I found creme Ostrich feathers and added white and black feathers to them to make a bouquet, which was then attached to the hat as well.

The hair style is created by pinning my Wizard wig from the other costume on my head and blending my own hair into it.

There you have it, phew. Sorry for the wall of text. It was a fun and creative process to make this costume because I took artistic liberties while sticking to the fundamentals of the character design. I loved working with the beautiful fabrics and thank all my photographers friends for taking pictures of me at Katsucon. If I figure out how to air travel with that hoop skirt, I would gladly take this costume to a West Coast con or other events in the future.

While we're on Halloween and PVC.... another blast from the past!

These two images are from a modeling shoot in 2005! The photographer is Kevin Stewart of Black Eye Photography, my mentor and eye-opening force in artistic and out of the box thinking when it came to photography.

For this theme, I built an outfit around a skull/cross bone corset I owned - making the gloves, shorts, skirt etc. and I used the wings I had made already for Midnight Wings. We went to a remote location in GA on a cold and windy autumn day and shot this theme on film, which is Kevin's usual choice of photography. There is a depth in film photography that can rarely be matched by digital, though digital can be so sharp and clear. I love both styles!

On, one last thing I should mention. THE GREEN TINT/SATURATION IN THESE PHOTOS IS ACHIEVED BY CROSS PROCESSING, NOT IN PHOTOSHOP. This is how the film came out.

Costume: Fiora - Nightraven skin - League of Legends

This is my full armor set & sword for Fiora - League of Legends. Made out of Worbla (sword made out of wood, hilt made of Worbla). This took over 4 weeks of learning a new technique and using a new material -it was a good and agonizing experience lol.

Couple of facts about this costume:

- I made it myself, which was a bitch. But I loved the process too! The material for the armor is Worbla, a Thermoplastic from Europe. The paint used is acrylics brush on over a spray painted base color.
Worbla is available for purchase in the Americas here!


- In the Nightraven skin, Fiora actually does not have the red streak in her hair. Yes, I am wearing red contacts.

- No, I'm not tall enough to be an accurate Fiora. But I chose this costume for the grace and dignity of the character mixed with the dark cool armor design. My motto is that anyone can cosplay whoever they want. This is a hobbyist community :)

- I thought about distressing this armor but Fiora is actually very prim and proper as a Duelist! She would not allow her armor to be dirty and dinged up :)

- Although I have worn this costume already, it's still not entirely finished. There are some things I want to add to the bodysuit underneath.

I made this Dawn costume based on Joseph Michael Linsner's "Cry for Dawn" comic book series for Dragoncon 2009, and only had the chance to wear it a couple of times so far. Since I spent so much time creating this costumes, I thought it would be nice to wear it to Anime USA 2010 just to get another wear out of it. Of course most people didn't recognize me since Dawn is an American series and I was at an Anime con, but I had fun taking photos in it anyway!
LJinto has a unique style of composition and lighting and I really loved these two shots by him.
